The Chaos Spawn gave the Astartes no time to adjust his stance. Its mangled, filthy maw let out a shriek no living creature should have been capable of making, then its entire body surged forward as seven or eight tentacles lashed toward Tyrennius at once.
Fortunately, as the captain of a main company of the Blood Angels, Tyrennius was no nameless nobody.
Wielding the sister's servo-use Power Sword, Tyrennius became entangled in battle with the Chaos Spawn.
Saturated with Warp energy, the Chaos Spawn possessed a faint psychic distortion. Ordinary weapons would easily slip off or fail upon striking it.
Moreover, the Chaos Spawn felt no pain, had no vital points, possessed absurd regenerative ability, and resisted Bolters and light weapons. Even Astartes weapons found it difficult to kill.
Cecilia held her Bolter at the side and provided support, but firing it at the Chaos Spawn accomplished little.
Those tentacles were like dead flesh, completely unresponsive even when struck.
They still needed a Chainsword to mince every piece of those tentacles before they could kill it for good.
Cecilia kept taking shots at the Chaos Spawn with her Bolter, but the results were minimal.
This couldn't go on.
The sister took two steps back, bent down to snatch up the fallen Chainsword, then rushed over and tossed it to Iron Hammer, urging him to repair it quickly.
"Iron Hammer, fix it!"
Iron Hammer was crouching on the ground in a daze. Hearing that, he abruptly raised his head. "Huh?"
He looked down at the Chainsword, then up at Cecilia, then back down at the sword, then at Cecilia again.
"I-I-I-I've never repaired a Chainsword!"
"Fix it. Now."
Iron Hammer had never repaired a weapon before, either.
Especially not an Astartes weapon. Within the Adeptus Mechanicus, an Astartes Chainsword was something only master military artificers were qualified to handle.
And the Chainsword was so heavy he could barely lift it.
Iron Hammer stood up. The four mechanical auxiliary limbs behind him unfolded at once, then retracted together, looking somewhat awkward.
He was from the Adeptus Mechanicus, that was true. But, well... he really had never repaired one. He had never even studied it.
To become a Legion Techmarine, one had to pass examinations in weapon specialization. What he had studied before was Power Armor.
But he had been given the task in a crisis. He was the only mechanic here, so he could only grit his teeth and do it.
Weapons and Power Armor were probably... more or less... the same, right?
Iron Hammer crouched down. His four mechanical auxiliary limbs reached for the Chainsword at once. Two mechanical arms gripped the maintenance panels on either side of the hilt, while the other two opened his portable tool kit, sending a wrench and welding torch springing out from its compartments.
Awaken, Machine Spirit!
After reconnecting the energy conduit, he used the Plasma Cutter to burn around the conduit's port. Blue plasma flame licked over the metal, shrinking the port just enough to fit snugly into the hilt's connector.
With the energy conduit welded back into place, Iron Hammer took a deep breath. He laid both human palms flat over the hilt, closed his eyes, and pressed his forehead against its surface.
May the Machine Spirit rejoice, may the Machine Spirit rejoice, may the Machine Spirit rejoice, may the Machine Spirit rejoice, may the Machine Spirit rejoice—
Bless this Chainsword so it would not jam, would run smoothly, and would become sharper.
Did a Chainsword even have a Machine Spirit? Who knew. Pray first.
Then he suddenly opened his eyes and shouted, "REJOICE!!!"
His fingers pressed the rebuilt hilt's activation switch at the same time.
The Chainsword's teeth began to spin.
That low roar accelerated from zero to full speed in less than half a second. It sounded crisper and more forceful than before it had broken, every tooth tearing a clean whistle through the air.
The pure-gold holy wing emblem on the hilt had been reconnected to its power circuit and gave off a faint golden glow.
Iron Hammer had practically erupted with the power of the Machine God reborn—he had actually fixed it!!!
*********
While Iron Hammer repaired the Chainsword, Lin En had not been idle either.
As Iron Hammer chanted for the Machine Spirit's joy, a chime rang in Lin En's mind—a notification he had not heard for fifteen days, yet one that made his heartbeat automatically quicken every time.
[ Ding—! ] [ The host has survived for a total of 15 days and has obtained 1 card draw chance. ]
Another fifteen days had passed since the last draw!
Lin En sprang up from the ground!
Down here, with no day or night, he had lost track of how much time had passed. Seriously, he had nearly forgotten that he had spent over twenty days underground, and another fifteen-day mark had arrived.
The system prompted him to draw a card.
[ Would the host like to draw now? ]
"Draw! Draw now!!!"
The wheel appeared again, a whirl of multicolored flowing light.
Lin En prayed for a combat skill, and this time he had become ambitious. Ideally, he wanted a ranged combat skill.
He wanted to go help Tyrennius and the sister. He might only get in the way in close combat, but ranged support would be great.
Lin En made his wish.
Ranged attack, ranged attack, ranged attack, ranged attack—
The wheel spun rapidly.
It's decided! Thunderous Grand Draw! Emperor, bless me! For the human!!!!!
Come forth, ranged attack skill—!!!!!
"Stop!!!!!"
The wheel stopped, and Lin En held his breath.
The color appeared first.
Golden light exploded outward.
A gold card!!!!!
Holy shit!!!!!! A gold card!!!!!!!
When the Golden Light lit up from the wheel, Lin En's pupils dilated.
A gold trait! A gold trait second only to rainbow!
The highest-level traits he had drawn so far were the purple [Danger Sense] and [Tactical Rehearsal]. [Thirty Days] did not count since it was a beginner's guaranteed reward. This was his first gold one!
Lin En looked at the text.
The first character.
[Weapon]
—Perfect!!!!
It was a trait directly tied to combat power!
What else could start with "weapon"!!! This was a new path! This was a combat skill!!!!
The second character.
[Enchantment]
...Something seemed off.
The third character.
[(Against]
...Something definitely seemed off.
The fourth character.
[Demons)]
Lin En's smile froze on his face. "...Huh?"
[ Congratulations, host, for drawing [Weapon Enchantment (Against Demons)]. ] [ Trait grade: Gold. ] [ Trait effect: Applies a demon-slaying Enchantment to one melee or ranged weapon. The enchanted weapon deals additional damage to targets with Chaos attributes. Damage bonus: 200%. Enchantment duration: 30 minutes. Cooldown: 1 hour. ] [ Note: From this day forth, the Omnissiah will turn and pray to you: may the Machine Spirit rejoice. ]
Damn it!
Lin En threw a rock!
Then picked it back up.
Oh, oh, oh, precious trait, don't hold it against me.
Although you weren't a combat skill, that didn't mean you were useless. You were so useful! You still strengthened the team's combat power, didn't you?
And you could boost his teammates' combat power too. Pretty handy!!!
His teammates were all strong; they simply lacked enough Warp-specialized damage against those Chaos monsters.
This skill had come at exactly the right time. It could make up for their greatest weakness.
Honestly, increasing his own combat power by 200% might not even be as effective as increasing Tyrennius's combat power by 2%.
Not a combat skill, yet better than a combat skill!
From now on, he was no longer dead weight on the team. He was proper team support, the godfather of every teammate on the squad—!!!!!!
Role classification: Tactical Support · Anti-Demon Specialist.
If the Emperor found out, He would probably stay up all night telling him "loyalty" three times.
Then Lin En ran over to Iron Hammer and bestowed a thunderous blessing upon Tyrennius's freshly repaired Chainsword!!!
He slapped the blade of the Chainsword, activating [Weapon Enchantment (Against Demons)] in his mind at the same time.
Golden light poured from his palm into the Chainsword, burning a brilliant golden outline along every saw tooth.
As the teeth spun, the Golden Light spun with them. The Chainsword began to shine brilliantly like a fully charged glow stick.
—The last thing to shine like this had been the Emperor's Sword.
It was now in the Regent's hand.
