Background / History

Luffy is Ace’s younger brother and carries the straw hat given to him by Shanks, who once saved his life. His promise to return that hat after reaching the pinnacle of piracy remains central to his dream of becoming Pirate King. 10 241

He first encounters Marshall D. Teach in Loguetown, where the two immediately argue over food and compete to order increasingly absurd quantities of meat and cherry pie. After learning that Teach serves with Ace, Luffy accepts Teach’s claim that Ace’s younger brother is also his “younger brother.” 10 11

Luffy later trains under Silvers Rayleigh for two years. By the time he returns to sea, Rayleigh considers the Whitebeard Pirates—including Teach—far too dangerous for the Straw Hats to challenge prematurely. 93
