Background / History

Fakyu was a member of the Chosen Pirates, a North Blue crew of more than twenty led by Shitt. After entering the Grand Line, the crew encountered a much stronger pirate band and was annihilated; only Fakyu and Shitt survived. The two then abandoned their larger ambitions and survived by robbing merchant ships. 9

At Sabaody Archipelago, a drunken Fakyu insulted and threatened Marshall D. Teach before being manipulated into bringing him aboard the Chosen Pirates’ ship. Once Shitt recognized Teach’s Whitebeard insignia and identity, Fakyu and Shitt each tried to take sole responsibility for the incident and offered their own lives to protect the other. 8

Teach condemned Shitt for surrendering his former dreams, while Fakyu reminded his captain of the promises they had made to their fallen crewmates. Reinvigorated, both men pledged themselves to Teach despite being warned that following him could cost them their lives. 9

During their poorest period, Fakyu and Shitt had their food money taken by people who beat and mocked them. They worked odd jobs and stole to survive before gaining enough strength to rob merchant ships. Fakyu later cites those experiences, and the helplessness of watching Shitt suffer a fever while they were poor, as reasons for rejecting mercy and conventional honor in battle. 159

Appearance

Fakyu is typically seen with a liquor bottle in hand and a pistol at his waist. After prolonged training under Teach, his former drinking belly is described as having hardened into abdominal muscles, and he carries himself with markedly greater confidence. 21

Personality

Fakyu initially appears boastful, drunken, and easily swayed by Teach’s false flattery. Beneath that behavior, he is intensely devoted to Shitt: he refuses to let his captain abandon their fallen crew’s ambitions and is willing to die in Shitt’s place. 8 9

As a member of the Blackbeard Pirates, he remains reckless and loud but becomes more confident through training. He obeys Teach even when terrified or outmatched, attacking Aokiji on command and carrying out violent orders against civilians and nobles. 13 22

He frequently gives crewmates unwanted nicknames, including “Old Laffitte” and “Old Van,” and is notably irreverent even around dangerous figures such as Shiryu. 24 28 29

He is greedy and opportunistic, treating even dangerous assignments as chances to steal or gamble. He is also capable of quickly following Teach’s deceptive schemes, including staging an injury to obtain money from Tesoro.
