Background / History

Li Sanming awakens after apparently dying inside a Sea King and discovers that he has entered the One Piece world as Saint Miming, a young Celestial Dragon. His mother, Xia Luqianqian, immediately blames the Marines for his condition and orders them punished. Once conscious, Miming stops the executions, forgives the Marines, and personally frees Domino and Hina 1 2.

Although he possesses the privileges of a Celestial Dragon, Miming retains modern moral instincts and quickly becomes disturbed by Mary Geoise’s treatment of slaves. He secretly reduces the burden placed on his “walking stool,” protects her from abusive servants and doctors, and investigates the three sisters purchased alongside her 4 5. To survive among the Celestial Dragons, he outwardly imitates their arrogance while using their authority to limit the harm done to people around him.

Miming’s confrontation with Charlos, Shalria, and Charmak marks his first open challenge to the ruling class. He defeats Shalria and Charmak, forces Charlos to abandon his musket, and realizes that his status allows him to attack other Celestial Dragons without ordinary consequences 7 8.

He later discovers that the abused Amazon Lily slaves are Boa Hancock, Sandersonia, and Marigold. The realization that his own earlier actions helped place them in slavery causes his Conqueror’s Haki to awaken. From then on, he vows to become strong enough to protect the sisters, alter the future, and eventually liberate the slaves of Mary Geoise 10 11.

The Gorosei identify Miming as a descendant of both the Bird and Rosward royal bloodlines. After testing his Haki, they begin considering him a potential successor. Miming manipulates their belief in his prophetic dreams, using exaggerated visions of Mary Geoise burning to influence military policy and accelerate preparations against a supposed revolutionary attack 13 14.

Under Anubis and the Twelve Gods, Miming undergoes the Empowerment Ritual and receives a foundation of divine energy. He recovers with unprecedented speed, develops Life Return, and begins training in the Six Styles of the Gods. His progress eventually includes Shadowless, Vajra, and the Vacuum sword path 15 26.

Miming’s secret agenda expands beyond personal strength. He protects Nico Robin when she hides beneath his table, gathers information about her pursuit, and manipulates CP9 to keep her alive. At the same time, he trains the Boa Sisters and prepares a long-term plan to exploit the World Government’s security arrangements for a mass slave escape 20 21 36 42 44. The liberation eventually takes place amid the fire at Mary Geoise; Miming secretly cooperates with the Revolutionary Army, burns his own home to preserve the operation’s appearance, and later replaces slave-powered walkways with mechanical ones 144 191 192 201.

After leaving the Holy Land to travel, Miming acquires a Devil Fruit initially called the Paralysis Fruit. At Punk Hazard, Caesar Clown nearly kills him in an unauthorized experiment. Miming survives and discovers that the fruit can turn his body into water, although doing so can leave him paralyzed without constant Life Return. He warns the Gorosei of a future poison-gas disaster at the facility and is assigned to oversee the preservation and evacuation of its research 73 77 81.

As a government inspector, Miming visits Impel Down, reunites with Domino, and befriends Magellan. His medical team develops temporary relief for Magellan’s digestive problems. Miming then travels aboard the Twenty-Thousand-Li Sunny, encounters Kuina and Zoro, saves Kuina after a near-fatal fall, and fights Dracule Mihawk. His published duel gives rise to the epithet “Sun King,” though Miming privately acknowledges that Mihawk was stronger 89 93 106 109 115 116 123.

Miming takes Laboon into his crew after explaining that Brook is alive. In Alabasta, he rescues the kidnapped Vivi and warns King Cobra to remain vigilant about Crocodile. He subsequently meets Robin on Jaya after using CP9 to locate—but not immediately arrest—her, and confronts Admiral Aokiji to protect her 123 124 144 152 155 165 166.

Later, Miming’s group battles Gecko Moria’s zombies in the Florian Triangle. Back in Mary Geoise, he prepares to receive the Nefertari Family while continuing to clash with Charlos and Shalria. On Fish-Man Island, Shyarly mistakes him for a murderer and stabs him with a poisoned dagger; despite the attack, he later protects her from Fish-Man assailants and asks her to keep his Devil Fruit ability secret 179 183 192 201 220 224 230.

Appearance

Miming begins as a short, physically weak Celestial Dragon, noticeably shorter than Hina and Domino. After the Empowerment Ritual, he becomes taller, sturdier, and heavily muscular, shocking the people who remember his former appearance 2 17 31. Years later, Domino initially fails to recognize him because of how much he has grown and changed 89.

Personality

Miming is compassionate beneath a deliberately arrogant exterior. He is horrified by slavery, protects the people around him, and treats the Boa Sisters and Robin as individuals rather than property. However, he often has to disguise that morality by behaving like a vulgar and cruel Celestial Dragon 4 5 20 21.

He is theatrical, impulsive, and shamelessly confident. Miming enjoys dramatic declarations, provokes weaker nobles, and frequently uses humor or absurdity to control tense situations. His confidence is partly genuine and partly protected by Celestial Dragon privilege.

Miming is also highly strategic. He manipulates the Gorosei with fabricated prophecies, exploits Spandine’s ambition, and deliberately encourages the World Government to concentrate its forces around the Celestial Dragons so the slaves may have an opportunity to escape 14 40 43 44. He later prepares for more than a year to counter Aokiji’s Ice Age in anticipation of protecting Robin 165.

His ambition is driven by both altruism and selfish desire. He wants to save Hancock, Robin, Vivi, and others, but he also imagines building a life with the women he considers his future “soulmates.” His moral opposition to the Celestial Dragons therefore coexists with possessiveness, vanity, and entitlement. His treatment of enemies can be brutal, and his attraction to Shyarly leaves him vulnerable to her ambush 144 220.

Miming awakens Conqueror’s Haki during an emotional confrontation with the Boa Sisters. His initial burst knocks out nearby guards and the younger sisters. The Gorosei later confirm that his Haki is genuine, though initially weak 11 13.
