Background / History

Kuina grew up at Shimotsuki Dojo as the daughter of its master, Koushirou. A swordsmanship prodigy, she consistently defeated her younger rival Roronoa Zoro, but privately feared that being a woman would eventually prevent her from becoming the world's greatest swordsman. After their 2,001st duel, the two swore that one of them would achieve that dream. 105 108

Miming arrived at Shimotsuki Village after foreseeing Kuina's death in an attic fall. His request to take her into his care was mistaken by Koushirou for a marriage proposal, and Kuina likewise believed she was being sent away to marry him. While retrieving her whetstone before leaving, she fell from the attic ladder, suffered a concussion and dislocated tibia, and briefly lost her heartbeat. 105 107 108 109

Miming revived her with emergency treatment and Life Bestowal, assisted by Birdmen 20's medical equipment. Koushirou and Miming then allowed Zoro to believe that Kuina had died, intending to turn his grief into resolve. Kuina awakened aboard the Twenty-Thousand-Li Sunny with Wado Ichimonji and her whetstone, and Miming assured her that she was not obligated to marry him or abandon swordsmanship. 109

Kuina is a young, short-haired girl who was initially a year older and roughly half a head taller than Zoro. She closely resembles Tashigi in face and hairstyle, repeatedly causing others to mistake one for the other. 105 113 120

Personality

She is demanding toward weaker trainees and has little patience for excuses, but she takes responsibility for those under her care. In Alabasta, she trains the Sand-Sand Group, protects them during Deadwood's attack, and refuses to abandon Vivi or the other children. 138 139 141
