Background

Enslavement in Mary Geoise

Hancock was captured from Amazon Lily alongside her younger sisters, Sandersonia and Marigold. The three were the only Amazon Lily slaves captured in the previous twenty years; by the time Miming found them, Hancock was unconscious and her sisters had been severely abused. 11

Her scars, captivity, and repeated mistreatment left her without any desire to live. When the sisters began a hunger strike, Hancock initially begged Miming to let them die rather than continue as slaves. She only accepted food after he appealed to her responsibility for Sandersonia and Marigold and promised to free them one day. 22

The Devil Fruit Arena

Shalria forced the Boa Sisters into an arena game involving the Love-Love Fruit, the Anaconda Fruit, and the King Cobra Fruit. Hancock refused to let either sister sacrifice herself for her, but Sandersonia and Marigold chose the Snake-Snake Fruits so that Hancock would be compelled to take the Love-Love Fruit and retain a chance of survival. 28 29 30

The Love-Love Fruit restored Hancock’s scarred face and awakened her petrification power. Unable to control it, she turned Sandersonia, Marigold, and numerous spectators—including several Celestial Dragons—to stone. 30

Trust in Miming

Believing that only her death could restore her sisters, Hancock asked Miming to kill her. He instead exposed himself to her petrification, using pain to resist it and proving that he trusted her; with his guidance, Hancock discovered that she could undo the effect herself. 32

Miming’s actions convinced Hancock that his promises were sincere. She fell deeply in love with him and became fiercely devoted to remaining at his side despite their status as master and slave. 32 37

Training and Arena Battles

To conceal her identity and suppress accidental petrification, Hancock was made to wear a spiked Seastone helmet and heavy armor. She trained with Miming and Cairns while learning to control both her Devil Fruit and Haki. 35 37 38
