Background / History
Yu Xiaogang is Thunder Douluo’s second son and a direct descendant of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Clever from childhood, he turns to studying Soul Masters after his Martial Soul mutates upon awakening, leaving him with exceptionally low Innate Soul Power 6.
After he obtains his first soul ring, clan members petition for his expulsion because of his first soul skill. Thunder Douluo agrees and forbids him from traveling as a direct descendant of the clan 37. Yu Xiaogang then spends three days seeking access to Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s library. Refused entry under its rule restricting access to nobles, he declares that he will never enter the academy 37.
His studies initially aim to find a remedy for his Martial Soul’s mutation. Lin Fan later explains that, after concluding the mutation cannot be changed through his existing research, Yu Xiaogang redirects his ambitions toward becoming a master of theory. Lin Fan characterizes this ambition as closely tied to his pride and desire for recognition 76.
After hearing about Qian Xunji’s approaching wedding, Yu Xiaogang leaves Heaven Dou City for Spirit City. He expects Spirit Hall to welcome a learned Soul Master and hopes to gain access to its Library Pavilion, master its contents within half a year, and publish works that will establish him as the continent’s foremost theorist. He imagines that the Royal Academy and his former clan will regret rejecting him 63.
History in Lin Fan’s account of the future
After separating from Bibi Dong, Yu Xiaogang meets Flender and travels the Soul Master world with him. They later encounter Liu Erlong while hunting Soul Beasts, and the three become traveling companions. Over several years, both men fall in love with Liu Erlong, who chooses Yu Xiaogang; Flender gives them his blessing and agrees to officiate their wedding 59.
On the wedding night, Liu Erlong’s father arrives and proves to be Yu Xiaogang’s second uncle. Unable to accept that Liu Erlong is his paternal cousin, Yu Xiaogang flees, leaving her to face her father alone. The companions separate: Liu Erlong eventually establishes Blue Tyrant Academy in Heaven Dou City, while Flender founds Shrek Academy near Suotuo City 59.
Yu Xiaogang later teaches Tang San and writes a recommendation directing Tang San and Xiao Wu to Flender’s Shrek Academy after their graduation from primary school 15 55.
Appearance
- Wears a gray cloth robe faded from repeated washing and carries a book when seen outside Heaven Dou Royal Academy 37.
- Appears ordinary to Yue Guan, who sees no sign that he poses a threat 37.
- Arrives at Spirit Hall’s registration office travel-worn, dusty, and in filthy clothing, but stands straight and attempts to project composure and confidence 73.
- His face is so bruised and swollen after his second beating that Yu Luomian initially fails to recognize him 75.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Master theory
- His childhood studies give him a solid grasp of basic Soul Master knowledge 6 15.
- In Lin Fan’s account, he infers that Tang San’s Innate Full Soul Power is connected to a second Martial Soul, but incorrectly dismisses Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass as useless 15.
- Lin Fan says his limited cultivation leaves gaps in his higher-level knowledge, including the mental danger of absorbing a ten-thousand-year soul ring 15.
- In the predicted future, he compiles basic knowledge into theories that earn him the title “Grandmaster,” which Lin Fan describes as originally being used mockingly by other Soul Masters 15.
- His mimicry theory, one of his ten core competitive theories, holds that plant Martial Souls can absorb soul rings from non-plant Soul Beasts. He regards Tang San’s absorption of a Mandala Snake ring as confirmation, but Lin Fan, Yue Guan, and Bibi Dong criticize him for presenting common knowledge as an original discovery 53.
- Lin Fan criticizes his decision to develop Tang San as a control-type Soul Master rather than emphasizing Blue Silver Grass’s vitality, recovery, and support potential. He also recounts Yu Xiaogang considering a ten-year Lone Bamboo as Tang San’s first soul ring before they encounter the Mandala Snake 19 55.
- Lin Fan describes the resulting Blue Silver Entanglement skill as a waste of the Mandala Snake ring because entanglement is already a natural function of Blue Silver Grass 54.
- At Spirit Hall’s registration office, Yu Xiaogang claims to have spent years researching Martial Soul mutations, innate defects, ways to compensate for those defects, and Twin Martial Souls. However, he cannot provide published results, journal articles, or a recommendation from a Spirit Hall scholar 73.
- In Lin Fan’s account, Yu Xiaogang later seeks Bibi Dong’s method for cultivating Twin Martial Souls. Lin Fan attributes this partly to his wish to claim the method as his own theory 60.
Luo Sanpao
- Yu Xiaogang’s mutated Martial Soul requires carrots to use its first soul skill, which produces a foul-smelling effect without offensive power 37.
- In Lin Fan’s account, Luo Sanpao releases a confusing fog but cannot protect him from a Mandala Snake 19.
- Lin Fan explains that Luo Sanpao’s failed mutation results from insufficient Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline. The Golden Sacred Dragon is described as an existence stronger than the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon 59.
- In the predicted future, Tang San gives him Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma. Lin Fan speculates that the Earth Dragon Golden Melon might instead have awakened Luo Sanpao into the Golden Sacred Dragon; this is a proposed possibility, not an advancement Yu Xiaogang has achieved in the altered timeline 80.
Golden Sacred Dragon Martial Soul Fusion Skill
- In Lin Fan’s account, Yu Xiaogang, Flender, and Liu Erlong develop a three-person Martial Soul Fusion Skill called the Golden Sacred Dragon 59.
- Despite being the weakest participant, Yu Xiaogang supplies the fusion’s primary bloodline and soul and serves as its guiding consciousness 59.
Relationships
- Thunder Douluo — His father supports his cultivation, but later approves his expulsion from the clan 6 37.
- Bibi Dong — Lin Fan describes a future romance in which she grants Yu Xiaogang a Spirit Hall elder’s title and access to its library; when they actually meet, she instead has him beaten 8 15 38. In the predicted future, he abandons her after Qian Xunji discovers their relationship, but later relies on her lingering feelings when threatening Spirit Hall over Tang San 15 60. In the altered timeline, she beats him again in Spirit City and has him expelled. Yu Xiaogang interprets her hostility as a misunderstanding, admits that he is beginning to like her, and hopes that getting close to her will secure library access 73 75.
- Tang San — Becomes his student in Lin Fan’s account of the future, after Yu Xiaogang recognizes evidence of Tang San’s second Martial Soul 15. Tang San saves him from Mandala Snake poison, later receives his recommendation to Shrek Academy, and gives him Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma 19 55 80. Lin Fan says Yu Xiaogang eventually claims, “I trained a god,” after Tang San attains godhood, while criticizing him for taking credit for Tang San’s own achievements 53 54.
- Qian Xunji — Learns of the predicted romance and arranges for Yu Xiaogang’s movements to be watched 9 11. Allows Bibi Dong to handle his arrival in Spirit City, but later permits him to remain temporarily to avoid unfavorable publicity before the wedding. He also opposes killing Yu Xiaogang immediately because doing so might unpredictably alter Tang San’s future, including giving Tang San a more capable teacher 73 75 76.
- Flender — His traveling companion and fellow participant in the Golden Sacred Dragon fusion in Lin Fan’s account. Both love Liu Erlong, but Flender blesses her relationship with Yu Xiaogang and later accepts students recommended by him to Shrek Academy 55 59.
- Liu Erlong — His paternal cousin and romantic partner in the predicted future. Their wedding collapses when her father reveals their kinship, prompting Yu Xiaogang to flee 59. Lin Fan later claims that Bibi Dong’s destruction of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan is partly intended to remove the opposition to their relationship 92.
- Yu Luomian — His second uncle and the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s second-in-command. Yu Xiaogang lies that bandits caused his injuries and persuades him to provide passage back into Spirit City. Yu Luomian insults his ability but agrees to let him accompany the clan procession, then orders him to go his own way once inside 75.
- Yue Guan and Gui Mei — Assist Bibi Dong in beating him in Heaven Dou City and again at Spirit Hall’s headquarters. Gui Mei throws him outside Spirit City after the second attack and later proposes eliminating him, an option Qian Xunji declines for the time being 38 73 76.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Predicted future: Lin Fan’s account identifies Yu Xiaogang as a possible turning point in Bibi Dong’s life. It also portrays him as Tang San’s teacher, whose useful basic knowledge is offset by consequential mistakes 8 15 19.
- Heaven Dou City encounter: Bibi Dong sees Yu Xiaogang after his rejection by the Royal Academy and feels an inexplicable pull toward him. Believing it to be the influence of fate, she resists the predicted relationship by beating him with Yue Guan and Gui Mei’s help. Yu Xiaogang is left injured and unaware of why they attacked him 37 38. Bibi Dong later tells Qian Xunji that the beating cleared her mind and dispelled the unexpected affection 52.
- Journey to Spirit City: Yu Xiaogang sees Qian Xunji’s wedding as an opportunity to enter Spirit City and join Spirit Hall. His real objective is its Library Pavilion, whose resources he hopes to use to establish his reputation as “Grandmaster” 63.
- Failed headquarters application: After entering Spirit City alone, Yu Xiaogang registers to join Spirit Hall. The Deacon accepts his basic registration but explains that his level only qualifies him for a records-clerk assignment at a small-town Sub-Hall. Headquarters records staff must be at least Soul Elders, and Yu Xiaogang has neither sufficient cultivation nor scholarly credentials to obtain an exception or library access 72 73.
- Second beating and expulsion: Bibi Dong enters the registration office, tells him to accept the small-town assignment or leave, and fulfills her earlier promise to beat him whenever they meet. Yue Guan and Gui Mei assist her, after which Gui Mei dumps him outside the city. Yu Xiaogang vows to make Spirit Hall regret its treatment of him 73.
- Return through the clan procession: Rather than abandon his plans, Yu Xiaogang concludes that Bibi Dong must have misunderstood him. He gains passage into the city with Yu Luomian, separates from the clan procession, and plans to wait near Spirit Hall for an opportunity to approach her. He expects his monthly allowance of one Gold Soul Coin as a One-Ring Soul Master to cover his living expenses 75.
- Continuing concern over fate: Qian Xunji lets him remain temporarily because the approaching wedding makes another expulsion politically inconvenient. Bibi Dong reports no particular feeling when observing him during his registration, but admits that hearing of his persistence causes slight discomfort. Qian Xunji suspects that the connection of fate has not been completely severed and warns her to remain vigilant 75 76.
- Decision to spare him: Gui Mei suggests killing Yu Xiaogang after the wedding, but Qian Xunji and Bibi Dong prioritize Spirit Hall’s internal affairs and the danger of unpredictable changes to Tang San’s future. His weakness is one reason they consider leaving him alive preferable to risking Tang San acquiring a stronger, more knowledgeable teacher 76.
- Influence on the predicted Soul Hunting Operation: Lin Fan claims that Bibi Dong’s lingering love leads her to spare Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong while destroying their clan, partly to allow them to be together without familial opposition. This account becomes another warning to the present Bibi Dong about the consequences of allowing her feelings for Yu Xiaogang to override her judgment 91 92.
