SCP-049 is a slender humanoid resembling a plague doctor. Tests show a human skeleton beneath its anomalous exterior 25 26.

Personality

SCP-049 is ordinarily cooperative with the Foundation and shows goodwill toward humans. It presents itself courteously as a physician, but becomes violently hostile when it detects what it calls the “pestilence.” Foundation researchers could not establish a pattern in its diagnoses after 123,000 interaction experiments 26.

It believes killing carriers prevents a catastrophe and regards its subsequent surgery as treatment. It expresses remorse for its victims, promises to restore them when it finds a perfect cure, and takes pride in procedures it considers successful 28 29 40.

Abilities & Skills

Pestilence detection

• Identifies supposed carriers, including living people, souls, and SCP-610’s Heavenly Principle variant 28 29 37.
• Insists the pestilence is not demon transformation, but struggles to explain what it is 28.
• Its concern about contamination of the Demon Slayer World’s Heavenly Principle Will is borne out when the Foundation reveals SCP-610’s infection there 35 36.

Lethal touch and soul erasure

• A touch kills targets; the Foundation suspects the effect is conceptual. SCP-049 also destroys souls it judges to be infected 26 29.
• Kills Giyu Tomioka, Tanjiro, and Nezuko, then erases their souls and those of nearby deceased people 28 29.

Story Role / Major Arcs

After damage to its containment facility during SCP-096’s escape, SCP-049 enters the Demon Slayer World. The Foundation releases its file and warns prospective explorers of the danger 25 26. It encounters Tanjiro and Nezuko on Mount Kumotori; its examination turns into an attack when it diagnoses Nezuko with the pestilence 27 28.

SCP-049 converts the siblings and Giyu into its first observed assistants, then moves through towns with an expanding SCP-049-2 force. Its treatment of reanimated ninja enlarges and strengthens that force, while its discovery of the Monster World’s coordinates raises fears that it could move beyond the Demon Slayer World 29 30 31 32 33.

At the infected Heavenly Principle Will, SCP-049 overcomes SCP-610’s variant but escalates its search for a cure into an experiment that kills the world’s inhabitants and absorbs its landscape into an orb. It fuses the orb with SCP-610’s remains before a Foundation task force offers it lavender, leaving it unable to resist containment 37 38 39 40. Dr. Calvin subsequently confirms SCP-049’s reinforced confinement 41.
