Background / History
Founding Konoha
Madara and Hashirama met as children despite belonging to enemy clans. Both loved their younger siblings and wanted children to have lives beyond the battlefield. After years of conflict between the Uchiha and Senju, they founded Konoha together 117 267.
Madara eventually became disillusioned with the village, where he experienced suspicion despite being a founder. Before defecting, he showed Hashirama the Uchiha Stone Tablet at Naka Shrine and discussed the union of opposing powers. Their conflict culminated at the Valley of the End, where Madara fought using the genjutsu-controlled Nine-Tails clad in Susanoo 167 197 268.
Hashirama believed he had killed Madara, and Tobirama recovered the body. The corpse disappeared before Tobirama could study it. Madara had survived and obtained a piece of Hashirama’s flesh during their battle, laying the groundwork for his pursuit of the “Power of All Creation” 267 268.
Preparing the Eye of the Moon Plan
After deciphering the Uchiha Stone Tablet, Madara devoted himself to Infinite Tsukuyomi: a worldwide genjutsu intended to give humanity happiness through dreams. By the time Kazan attracted his attention, Madara was elderly, confined to a cavern, and seeking someone to continue collecting the tailed beasts after his death. He ordered the Zetsu to guide Nagato’s development and monitor Kumogakure’s perfect-jinchūriki technique, which he considered a possible obstacle 53.
Reports of Kazan’s Haki and sustained Sage Mode gradually interested him. Although he rejected comparisons between the boy and Hashirama, he acknowledged Kazan’s potential and ordered discreet surveillance 117.
Recruiting Jing Uchiha
Madara rescued the badly injured Jing Uchiha and selected him as his human proxy. He exploited the Mist Ninja’s implantation of the Three-Tails into Jing’s sister, Miya, arranging for Jing to witness the tragedy and awaken his Mangekyō Sharingan. He also confirmed that bombs had been placed before sending the Zetsu to carry out the operation 161.
After Miya’s death, Madara revealed his identity and persuaded Jing that the world’s hatred could only be escaped through the Eye of the Moon Plan. He denied engineering the incident, while admitting that he had ensured Jing witnessed it. Jing accepted the plan the next day. Madara trained him, instructed him to act under the name “Madara Uchiha,” and gave him the Nine-Tails’ summoning contract before dying in anticipation of eventual resurrection 167.
Resurrection and Defeat at Konoha
Jing brought Madara back through Impure World Reincarnation during his renewed attack on Konoha. Madara initially demanded Kazan’s cooperation, then eagerly fought him after negotiations failed. Kazan repeatedly destroyed his reanimated body and Susanoo, earning recognition as the strongest taijutsu opponent Madara had encountered 300 301 303.
After Black Zetsu arranged Rinne Rebirth, Madara overwhelmed Tobirama, Hashirama, and Minato. He absorbed Hashirama’s senjutsu chakra, reclaimed his remaining Rinnegan from Jing, and killed his former proxy with a Black Iron Rod 307 308.
Even fully revived, Madara could not overcome Kazan’s Haki and rapidly healing Sage Body. He withdrew to gather the remaining tailed beasts, prioritizing Infinite Tsukuyomi over continuing the duel. Kazan pursued him without securing a final victory; Madara ultimately escaped through Reverse Summoning 309 312 314 340.
Fourth Shinobi World War
Madara attacked Iwagakure, defeated Ōnoki, and captured the Four-Tails and Five-Tails when they returned to defend the village. He then defeated the Fourth Raikage, searched Cloud ninja’s souls for intelligence, and located Yugito Nii and Killer B on Turtle Island 318 319.
He cooperated with Kabuto Yakushi and prepared White Zetsu and reanimated armies for the Fourth Shinobi World War. His threat drove the villages into an alliance, whose one hundred thousand ninja marched toward his lair 322 326 328 330.
At the God Tree, Madara announced that its flower would bloom in approximately fifteen minutes. He fought Kazan while the Hokage attempted to destroy the tree. His strategy of outlasting Kazan’s Eight Gates failed to produce an advantage: Kazan maintained control and repeatedly shattered his defenses. Madara remained alive and fighting in the latest provided chapter 339 342 344.
Appearance
- Original and reanimated appearance: Long black hair, crimson eyes, black gloves, and red layered armor from an earlier era 300 301.
- Elderly appearance: A decrepit body that tires after a few steps; near death, even standing exhausts him 53 167.
- After living revival: Removes his armor to reveal a chest marking associated with the fusion of his and Hashirama’s powers 307.
- Ten-Tails jinchūriki appearance: White hair, pale skin, white robes, and a Six Paths Staff 328 337.
Personality
Madara is proud, domineering, and openly dismissive of people he considers weak. For much of his life, Hashirama was the only ninja he respected. Kazan eventually earned the same distinction through direct combat; even while cooperating with Kabuto, Madara repeatedly contrasted Kabuto’s personal goals with the world-changing ambitions of himself, Hashirama, and Kazan 53 303 322.
He takes intense pleasure in fighting worthy opponents. Being injured by Kazan excites him rather than humiliates him, and he regards their final duel as the greatest battle of his life. Nevertheless, his commitment to Infinite Tsukuyomi can override his desire to fight, prompting him to retreat when continuing would endanger the plan 301 312 340 342.
His belief in dream-based salvation grows from despair over real-world peace. He considers hatred unavoidable and rejects Hashirama’s faith in mutual understanding. That conviction allows him to justify mass destruction and exploit Jing’s love for Miya, while still seeking approval from the two opponents he truly acknowledges 167 305 307 342.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan
Madara’s ocular powers support genjutsu and the manifestation of Susanoo 197 301.
- Controls the Nine-Tails through genjutsu during his battle with Hashirama 197.
- Manifests blue Susanoo armor, sword-bearing humanoid forms, a two-faced four-armed form, and a complete Tengu Warrior 301 302 305.
- Fires Yasaka Magatama, powerful magatama-shaped projectiles 305.
- Uses Majestic Attire: Susanoo to armor the Nine-Tails 197.
- Limit: Kazan repeatedly breaks even his advanced Susanoo with Haki-enhanced strikes 303 310 312.
Rinnegan
His restored Rinnegan grants perception, chakra absorption, and access to the Outer Path 308 319.
- Tracks Kazan’s exceptionally fast movements 309 310.
- Absorbs Minato’s senjutsu-enhanced Rasengan, Ōnoki’s Dust Release, and combined elemental attacks 308 311 319.
- Searches souls to discover Turtle Island’s location 319.
- Summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to gather tailed-beast chakra 309 319.
- Detects the chakra fluctuations associated with Flying Thunder God formulas, allowing him to anticipate teleportation points 339.
Limbo: Border Jail
Madara creates invisible shadows capable of fighting independently at Six Paths level 308 309.
- Produces one shadow with one Rinnegan or four with both eyes 308.
- Shatters Hashirama’s Wooden Golem and Wood Dragon with invisible blows 308.
- Cannot ordinarily be tracked by the naked eye or Mangekyō Sharingan; a comparable Rinnegan can see the shadows 308.
- Counters: Kazan senses them with Observation Haki and restrains or disperses them using Truth-Seeking Orbs and Haki attacks 308 341 344.
Wood Release
Madara reproduces Hashirama’s signature bloodline techniques after acquiring his power 304 307.
- Uses Wood Dragon, Wooden Golem, and True Several Thousand Hands 305 311.
- Leaves a powerful clone to fight independently while his main body engages Kazan 308.
- His clone overwhelms numerous high-ranking ninja and summons wooden constructs to shield itself from stored Haki 311.
- Limit: Kazan’s stored Haki destroys the Wood Dragon, Wooden Golem, and Thousand-Armed Kannon in succession 311.
Elemental Ninjutsu and Senjutsu
Madara combines large-scale elemental attacks with Six Paths techniques 301 309.
- Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Jutsu: Produces a sky-filling barrage of fireballs 301.
- Tengai Shinsei: Brings down an enormous celestial stone capable of destroying Konoha 302 303.
- Sage Art: Storm Release: Light Fang: Fires a cutting beam from his mouth; wounds Kazan and slices cleanly through the terrain 309 339.
- Yin Release: Lightning Dispatch: Releases branching purple lightning that destroys Hashirama’s thousand-armed construct 337.
- Absorbs Hashirama’s senjutsu chakra directly before resuming his battle with Kazan 308.
Six Paths Body and Truth-Seeking Orbs
His later transformations elevate his vitality and give him mastery over Yin–Yang-based weapons 312 340 341.
- Commands nine Truth-Seeking Orbs, shaping them into weapons and defensive formations 339 342.
- Can continually recreate the orbs because he possesses both Yin and Yang Release 341.
- Regenerates severe injuries, including the destruction of large portions of his body 340 341 344.
- Creates Black Iron Rods to immobilize opponents and kill Jing 308.
- Ordinary ninjutsu is ineffective against his later body; taijutsu and senjutsu remain viable means of attack 337.
- Limit: Kazan’s Eight Gates-enhanced attacks break his orb shields and repeatedly overwhelm his regeneration and defenses 341 342 344.
Taijutsu and Weapons
Madara combines exceptional speed, close-combat skill, and battlefield awareness 301 311.
- Has brought the Body Flicker Technique to an exceptionally high level 301.
- His clone disarms Yuzuki Kurama and uses the captured Kubikiribōchō against multiple opponents 311.
- Limit: His initial attacks are too slow to bypass Kazan’s Observation Haki 301.
