Background / History

The Sand Ninja participate in Sunagakure’s war against Konoha during the Second Shinobi World War. Their forces include ordinary shinobi, Jonin, Elite Jonin, elite Chunin, puppeteers, sensory specialists, and senior commanders such as Ebizo and Chiyo 35 37.

A fifteen-member Sand unit led by Ebizo ambushes a Konoha provisions convoy after receiving accurate intelligence about its route. The unit consists of four Elite Jonin, seven Jonin, and four elite Chunin. Although the Sand Ninja initially mistake the convoy for a weak escort, they encounter Liuyun’s Ice Release and suffer catastrophic losses 35.

The Sand’s Beheading Squad is formed at Chiyo’s urging after Hatake Sakumo’s battle with the Third Kazekage. Ebizo commands the squad and attempts to eliminate Liuyun, Mikoto, and Nawaki before they reach the Konoha front 37.

Provisions Convoy Ambush

The Sand Ninja ambush a Konoha provisions convoy traveling toward the front. Their combined Wind and Fire Release initially overwhelms the inexperienced escort, killing most of the Konoha shinobi. Liuyun survives behind an Ice Release barrier and kills Hiyori Shiya with ice shards 35.

Ebizo orders the remaining Sand forces to eliminate Liuyun, Mikoto, and Nawaki. Liuyun summons Katsuyu to protect his companions, then fights the Sand Ninja alone. He kills multiple Jonin through Genjutsu and Ice Release before creating a giant ice dragon 36.

The ice dragon freezes most of the remaining Sand force with a fifteen-minute barrage of Ice Arrows. Ebizo recognizes the danger and escapes, leaving the Beheading Squad largely destroyed 37.

Defense of the Sand Main Camp

When Tsunade leads a Konoha squad to destroy the Sand’s supplies, the Sand Ninja reveal that the food stores have already been removed and that the raid plan was leaked to them. Chiyo and Ebizo surround the Konoha force and attack 42.

Liuyun unleashes a large-scale Ice Release that freezes nearly every Sand Ninja nearby. Chiyo survives and organizes a counterattack by improving visibility across the camp with Fire Release and torches 42 43.

Anlan and Shukaku

Liuyun creates Anlan, a towering ice giant armed with a spear and shield. Its attack damages Chiyo’s Ten Puppets of Chikamatsu and cuts through part of the surrounding landscape. The Sand Ninja are forced to focus on survival rather than victory 44.

Liuyun withdraws after sensing the One-Tail Jinchūriki. Bunpuku releases Shukaku, leading to a large-scale battle between Shukaku and Anlan 44 45. Konoha later learns that Liuyun defeated Bunpuku, while the destruction of the Sand camp dramatically raises Konoha’s morale 46 47.
