Magical Girls are ranked, but they do not all begin at the lowest rank. These are documented awakenings and advancements in chapter order:

Background and History

The earliest three Magical Girls fought Fallen Beasts before the Association or established combat tactics existed. Their arrival predates the Association’s records, which begin with the First Holy War 72 167. After Love, Knight, and Thousand Blades accidentally travel to an earlier era, they encounter soldiers who do not recognize the very idea of a Magical Girl. Love later helps a girl named Xiao Ming become the Magical Girl Truth 165 169.

Magical Girls can awaken through a powerful desire to protect others, but that is not the only documented path. Celestial Star gained her powers after Magic Power entered her body during an experiment, without making a wish 48. Their powers and experience also vary sharply: some awaken at an unusually high rank, while others advance through training or a change in conviction 47 84 119.

The Association registers and supports Magical Girls, assigns personnel, provides training facilities, and responds when local branches need help 5 72 104. Most of its Magical Girls fight threats or assist those who do; Scholar, herself once known as a Magical Girl, instead founded the Liberation Faction after a dispute over how humanity should deal with negative emotions 128.

Appearance

A Magical Girl’s transformed form includes distinctive Regalia rather than a standard uniform 5 6 17.

• Love wears a pink-and-white gown with purple detailing, has long pink hair, and has star-shaped pink pupils 5.
• Knight wears silver light armor and carries a sword and shield 6 7.
• Masked Heroine’s Regalia includes a mask and cape; her mask changes when she advances and embraces an identity of her own 17 84.
• Regalia also blocks prying eyes unless its protection is broken 19.

Abilities and Skills

Magic Power and exclusive abilities

Magical Girls use Magic Power to fight, fly, and sense supernatural threats. Their individual abilities differ widely: Thousand Blades creates silver blades, Ranger uses Absolute Evasion, and Shen Yin specializes in mental protection and communication 29 61 88 105.

• Lamp-Lighting Rank is described as the usual threshold for an exclusive ability, though Thousand Blades displays her blade ability despite testing at Firefly Rank 3 29 34.
• Abilities may serve offense, defense, healing, support, or investigation; raw rank alone does not describe a Magical Girl’s combat role 34 61 105 109.
• Magic Power can support ordinary movement and protection, including flight and a water-repelling membrane 105 139.

Protection beyond combat

Magical Girls also evacuate civilians, offer reassurance, and take part in public events intended to ease fear after attacks 7 99 130.

• Love directs Northern Capital patrols to notice and help people vulnerable to exploitation, arguing that protecting people’s hope matters alongside defeating Fallen Beasts 130.
• In the earlier era, Love rejects being treated as a god and explains that Magical Girls draw strength from people’s love, courage, and determination 169.

Equipment and Support

• Regalia — Individual transformed attire that offers protection and helps distinguish Magical Girls from one another 19 105.
• Association facilities — Headquarters provides testing grounds, sparring arenas, a Meditation Tower, a research library, and simulation pods with power limits 104 105.
• Association ID — Allows Magical Girls to use Association-owned businesses and request financial support 104.
• Dedicated transport — Headquarters can dispatch vehicles for assignments; the high-speed White Feather aircraft transports Love’s group to Headquarters 104.
