Ch. 61Milo in the Dark
Plot points and events
- The supernatural crisis in Milo becomes impossible to conceal: residents post pleas for help online, and the Egyptian authorities do not suppress them. Public attention grows, especially after the earlier mysterious fog around Ramesses II.
- Flights to Milo are suspended, but reporters travel to nearby cities and continue toward Milo by road.
- In Milo, Krov ignores his frightened roommate’s warning and livestreams the city, hoping to become famous. His camera shows living people moving mechanically, skeletal dead wandering the streets, mummies patrolling in chariots, and a dark red sun overhead.
- Viewers are horrified. Then the figures in the streets all look directly toward the camera, making the audience feel as if they have been seen through the screen.
- Meanwhile, Egyptian leader Clemens seeks help from Greece, asking President Cornelius to lend Egypt the Wheel of Fortune, a divine artifact associated with the goddesses of fate. After Iceland’s president says he does not have the Norns’ Rope of Fate, Clemens hopes Greece may possess the Wheel.
- Cornelius refuses, claiming Greece has no Wheel of Fortune. Inwardly, however, he is unwilling to let anyone else gain access to Greece’s suspected artifacts.
Character developments
- Krov lets ambition overpower fear, choosing online fame and money over caution. His confidence contrasts with the danger he is exposing himself—and his viewers—to.
- Clemens is shown urgently seeking supernatural assistance for Egypt, even offering Greece a substantial price.
- Cornelius presents a firm denial while privately guarding Greece’s artifacts. He believes divine artifacts are real despite inconclusive tests and is determined to keep them for Greece.
- Krov’s roommate acts as the voice of caution, but cannot persuade Krov to stay inside.
Significant themes
- The spread and limits of information: The internet makes Milo’s crisis visible worldwide, but witnessing it does not give viewers control over it.
- Fear versus ambition: Krov’s pursuit of fame blinds him to obvious danger.
- Political self-interest and mistrust: Nations face a shared supernatural threat, yet leaders protect their own resources and question one another’s claims.
- The failure of ordinary explanations: Modern technology can broadcast the event, but cannot explain or contain it.
Character interactions
- Krov dismisses his roommate’s warnings and proceeds with the livestream.
- Viewers interact with Krov through comments and subscriptions, first demanding spectacle and then reacting in terror.
- Clemens appeals to Cornelius for the Wheel of Fortune; Cornelius refuses while privately resolving to keep Greece’s suspected artifacts out of others’ hands.
