Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Wood-type Spirit Master; level unspecified 34 His initial documented realm. Weak spiritual power and limited combat experience lead him to seek a partner for the academy assessment.
Level Three Great Spirit Master 154 Confirmed after the group’s practical training at Blade Mountain. His approaching breakthrough is noted earlier during the expedition 149.
  • At the Phoenix Pool, Mu Sheng senses the barrier to his next level but withdraws when Wanyu’s thunder tribulation begins; his breakthrough is not confirmed there 73.
  • Wanyu later requires him to remain in Elf territory until he reaches Spirit Venerable. This is a cultivation goal, not an attained realm 556.

Appearance

  • Initially described as a frail youth whose stamina cannot match Wanyu’s relentless hunting pace 34 35.
  • Has fair skin and a smaller build than Lien; his spare clothes also fit Yuchi Shou poorly 369 425 456.
  • Loses a front tooth after biting one of Ding Ding’s unusually hard green fruits 410.
  • Later described as handsome, with prominent front teeth noted as his distinguishing flaw 551.

Personality

Mu Sheng begins timid, easily discouraged, and openly emotional. Rejection by prospective teammates nearly makes him abandon the academy assessment, and Xiao Ruo’s betrayal leaves him sobbing for Wanyu’s help. Nevertheless, he continues following Wanyu despite exhaustion and develops considerable admiration for her strength 34 35.

His kindness initially makes him vulnerable to exploitation. After losing his spirit stones to people he tried to rescue, he becomes more cautious and assertive: he helps rob senior students, demands consequences for Xiao Ruo’s actions, and later wins an unfavorable tournament match through deception rather than direct strength 35 36 155.

Loyalty increasingly outweighs his fear. He conceals evidence of Minghui’s unusual blood to protect her, accompanies Qian Ziyan out of gratitude for the Qian Family’s help, and assists injured companions even after dangerous encounters. His sensitivity remains intact—he is deeply remorseful after attacking Minghui under Mei Wu’s control and tearful when his friends leave Elf territory 128 160 362 369 556.

Abilities & Skills

Xiao Bai’s Smoke

Xiao Bai is a spirit-plant companion whose smoke supplies Mu Sheng’s principal incapacitating ability 34 77.

  • Releases sleeping smoke, Bewilderment Mist, and poisonous fumes 34 77 132.
  • Can release knockout smoke ten times within twenty-four hours, according to Mu Sheng’s initial explanation 34.
  • Supports mass hunting, ambushes, and the robbery of stronger academy students 35 36.
  • Can approach enemies behind allied vines and release mist without attracting attention 116.
  • Its concealment ability helps Mu Sheng defeat the stronger Li Ruo during the Qian Family qualifiers 155.
  • Smoke is unsafe in a crowded allied formation: Mu Sheng avoids using it when it might incapacitate his own side 77.
  • Xiu Qi states that Old Man White can advance at most three more grades and cannot become a holy herb 36.

Little Green’s Plant Summoning

Little Green is a demon plant Mu Sheng subdued. It summons nearby plants to assist him, allowing surrounding vegetation to become part of his defenses 77.

  • Calls vines and branches to bind opponents’ hands and feet 77.
  • Raises vines to intercept attacks from multiple directions 352.
  • Combines its vines with Little Color’s to form a thorned net that restricts enemies’ movement 352.
  • Supplies restraints while Mu Sheng and Situ Hao guard Qian Ziyan 173.
  • Has limited growth potential. Neither Little Green nor Xiao Bai can reach the level required to assume humanoid form 77 366.

Wood-Type Perception

Mu Sheng can sense vitality through his wood affinity 128.

  • Detects unusually rich life force in plants revived around bloodstained ground after Xian’s death aura devastates a grove 128.
  • Recognizes the revived growth as a dangerous clue and destroys it to prevent others from discovering the secret 128.
  • His affinity makes him a suitable host for Little Sprout, which attaches to his back to enter a spirit-plant field 456.

Combat Experience and Limitations

  • Learns to extract magic cores efficiently through the academy’s three-day hunt, despite initially struggling with fire ants’ hard skulls 35.
  • Develops tactical misdirection, bargaining with senior students before using mist to incapacitate them 36.
  • Helps organize new students during their encirclement by senior teams 38.
  • Is described as having the poorest aptitude and slowest cultivation progress among his companions, though he works hard 149.
  • Struggles against stronger fire-type opponents; Wanyu arranges training with a Spirit Emperor-level Fire Spirit Master after his tournament defeat 160.
  • Has no talent for potion-making, despite learning from Minghui’s methods and admiring her healing work 460.

Equipment / Items

  • Sword — Used during the academy magic-beast hunt; prolonged fighting leaves his sword arm exhausted 35.
  • Assessment jade token — Records his hunting tally and placement during the first assessment round 35.
  • Storage space and spare clothes — Supplies dry clothing for Lien and later clothing for Yuchi Shou after their garments are ruined 369 425.

Relationships

  • Qian Wanyu / Dongfang Wanyu — Assessment partner, leader, and cultivation guide. She helps him qualify, teaches him caution through Xiao Ruo’s betrayal, supports his revenge, and later directs his training. He addresses her as “Sister Wanyu” and remains strongly attached to her 34 35 36 160 556.
  • Dongfang Minghui / Jian Tong Yao — Friend and traveling companion. He helps protect her, conceals evidence of her blood’s restorative power, and assists with her investigations and patients. After her rebirth, she initially does not recognize him 48 128 160 369 460 551.
  • Xiao Ruo — Former close friend who exploits his attempt to help her, binds him, and steals his spirit stones. He later takes her team’s stones and rejects her appeals to friendship 35 36.
  • Lü Xing — Fellow wood-type cultivator and close companion. Lü Xing questions his secrecy about Minghui’s blood; Mu Sheng later worries about his absence and remains in Elf territory, where Jian asks him to keep Lü Xing company 73 160 344 556.
  • Qian Ziyan — Traveling partner and powerful sparring opponent. Mu Sheng accompanies him to search for Wanyu and her mother and refuses to leave him alone despite his reserved temperament 344 345 362.
  • Situ Hao and Bai Rou — Academy seniors and fellow companions. Mu Sheng shares their training and tournament setbacks and eventually learns to leave their romantic bickering alone 110 154 160 344.
  • Xiu Qi — Temporary assessment ally whose immediate recognition of Xiao Bai’s nature and limitations frightens Mu Sheng 36.
  • Mei Wu — Enemy who controls him and makes him nearly strangle Minghui. The means of her control remain unexplained after Wanyu kills her 369.
  • Little Sprout — Spirit plant that chooses him as a carrier, fuses its branches with the flesh of his back, and stubbornly refuses to transfer to Minghui during a gathering expedition 456.

  • Their hunting partnership earns him a final tally of 687 and 168th place, qualifying him among the top 200 contestants 35.
  • Xiao Ruo’s group steals his spirit stones at the start of the second round. Wanyu initially leaves him bound to make him confront the consequences of careless trust 35.

Blade Mountain and Qian Family Trials

  • Assists Minghui in examining the ashes of a spontaneously combusted beast-turned person, discovering conspicuous deep-blue granules 347.
