Background / History

Hatching and life with Minghui

Qian Wanyu found Toothless’s egg before it hatched, but it remained unresponsive in her storage space. Minghui’s repeated spirit-herb baths, essence blood, and patient care eventually brought the seemingly dead egg to life. Toothless ate almost all her eggshell after hatching 359.

Toothless followed Minghui without a beast contract. Minghui believed the hatchling had taken her for family because she was the first person Toothless saw upon waking. What began as keeping a pet gradually became raising a daughter, with Minghui hoping to teach her speech, reading, medicinal-herb recognition, and eventually help her attain Humanoid Form 52 269.

Her species was initially unidentified: a full day searching magical-beast books produced no matching record. Despite her small size and dependence on Minghui, she could act independently in emergencies, leading Qian Wanyu to Minghui after an abduction 50 63 436.

Death Aura injury

Black mist gathered around Toothless’s claws and affected her forelegs. The Chubby Dean identified it as an advanced form of Death Aura but could not provide an immediate cure 92 95.

The injury persisted for months, leaving her forelimbs unusable and her hindlimbs awkward. Minghui worked on medicine while Toothless struggled to move normally. The experience later contributed to her intense hostility toward black mist and Death Aura 103 337.

Blade Mountain and Little White Ball

Separated from Minghui inside Blade Mountain, Toothless tracked her scent and followed a Dark-Type Monster Tiger to its den. There she offered food to a bullied white cub and brought it back to the group 149 151.

Toothless hid a scavenged treasure, covered the burial spot, and used the cub’s scent to discourage other animals from approaching. When Qian Family servants tried to seize both creatures, she called for help, bit through Aunt Qin’s finger bones, and awakened a powerful fire attack amid the ensuing moth swarm 151.

The cub became Little White Ball. Toothless later presented her to Qian Wanyu as a thank-you gift, enabling Wanyu to contract a rare Dark-Type Spirit Beast 161.

Inheritance battles and Beastfolk travels

Toothless became an increasingly effective combat companion. Her flames killed Sticky Life Worms and their Mother Worm, and she burned Meng Yixiao to ashes after Minghui and Qian Wanyu expelled him from Wanyu’s body 181 183 189.

After teleportation separated the group, she traveled with Minghui through Beastfolk territory. She burned Lien’s accidentally loosed arrow and later fought during the ambush on Cass. Her call enabled Little White Ball to locate the battlefield and bring Qian Wanyu, helping reunite the sisters 190 195.

Discovery of her Dragonfolk heritage

At Long County Village, the Little Golden Pseudo-Dragon recognized Toothless’s flames as true dragon fire and called her the Dragon God. An old portrait closely resembled her, and he privately concluded that she was the Dragon God’s offspring 302 303.

The discovery made Minghui worry that Toothless might eventually leave to find her birth family. Qian Wanyu maintained that the decision should belong to Toothless 303.

Deep Pool training and lost memories

In Dragon-Trapping Valley, Toothless repeatedly challenged the powerful phantom guarding the Dragonfolk Sanctuary. The Tomb Keeper required her to awaken her intelligence and defeat him, later reducing the combat requirement to making him voluntarily retreat one step. A restraining power prevented her from leaving before meeting the conditions 323 324 337.

Her attacks evolved from straightforward charges into coordinated fire rings and feints. After the phantom finally moved, she entered a sanctuary filled with enormous Dragonfolk remains. Following the valley’s collapse, Minghui found her injured but alive, with a red gem embedded in her forehead that opened into the Sanctuary 338 340 341 342.

Toothless later disappeared after uncontrolled dragonfire engulfed the group’s shelter. She returned in Humanoid Form while reclaiming a stolen Dragon Core, but no longer recognized Minghui or Qian Wanyu. Minghui’s scent and a surviving eggshell fragment persuaded her to remain with them while seeking her lost past 348 359.

Her attachment gradually resurfaced through familiar gestures, an accidental “Mother,” and attempts at affection. Minghui also witnessed scenes of Toothless being whipped and tormented before fighting back against fiendish creatures. By their encounter with a hostile Dragonfolk man, Toothless’s memories had returned, and she took Humanoid Form to defend Minghui 362 379 383 386 390.

Dragon Core possession

The ancestral Dragon Core Toothless had protected retained its own consciousness and tried to seize her body. Ding Ding discovered two Cores within her: her smaller Core and a larger one entwined with black threads 397 399.

Inside the Longevity Cauldron, combat with the Fierce Beast helped occupy the hostile Core while Toothless resisted. Ding Ding delivered medicine, carried messages, and repeatedly struck the invading Core at her request. Although Toothless became stronger, the rival consciousness eventually launched another desperate takeover attempt, prompting a plan to draw it out using Yuchi Shou as bait 399 401 402.

Dragon Princess and leadership

Toothless asserted her descent from the Dragon God by revealing the red mark on her forehead, which Yuchi Shou recognized. The Dragon Queen later worked to awaken her daughter, visibly aging from the effort. On emerging from seclusion, Toothless accepted her inheritance while continuing to call Minghui her mother 401 445.

She fought the traitor Kehan but struggled against his Death Aura until the Dragon God intervened. Minghui treated her injuries and urged her to fight less recklessly. Toothless begged Minghui to stay, but accepted that both had responsibilities: Minghui to those she needed to rescue, and Toothless to her parents and Dragonfolk Territory 446.

As a leader, Toothless received reports of Death Spirit Master attacks and ordered stronger defenses. She subsequently joined the campaign around Death Valley, then returned to lead her people at the story’s ending. Little White Ball chose to stay with her after Qian Wanyu released their contract 543 574 575 578.

Appearance

Toothless’s beast form develops from a small, furry hatchling into an imposing black dragon; her Humanoid Form is a beautiful girl with black hair, black eyes, and a distinctive red forehead mark 50 324 359 390.

  • Black fur and eyes: Her fur becomes increasingly glossy as she grows; flame patterns later appear within her pupils 179 301 386.
  • Wings, claws, and fangs: Early wing bumps develop into functional wings, while her teeth become long and sharp 75 81 161 379 391.
  • Forehead gem: A fiery-red gem appears after the Sanctuary trial; in Humanoid Form, it resembles a vivid beauty mark 341 359.
  • Family resemblance: Her mature Dragon Form is almost identical to the Dragon God’s 446.
  • Changing size: She grows from being carried in Minghui’s arms to dog size, then chest height, and eventually a mountain-like presence beside her companions 50 161 301 386.

Personality

As a youngster, Toothless is affectionate, mischievous, and intensely possessive of Minghui. She seeks praise, rubs against her, and treats Qian Wanyu as a rival for attention. Her apparent silliness masks practical intelligence: she can find help, conceal treasure, and recognize danger 63 75 151 303.

Food and treasures strongly motivate her. She fiercely guards roasted fish, gathers valuable objects regardless of whether she can use them, and eagerly responds to promised treats. Her playfulness can be dangerous: she accidentally kills a rabbit by kneading it and remains upset for days afterward 235 254 302 303.

After awakening and taking Humanoid Form, her Dragonfolk pride becomes more pronounced. While amnesiac, she looks down on humans, fiercely defends her people’s secrets, and reacts violently to perceived betrayal. Nevertheless, she rescues Xiao Miao after wrongly accusing him and awkwardly allows him to remain with the group 359 361 371.

Repeated defeat reveals extraordinary persistence rather than discouraging her. Her eventual maturity adds tactical judgment and leadership, but does not erase her jealousy, prickliness, or attachment to Minghui and Little White Ball 324 337 543 570 578.
