|---|---|---|

After consuming metal objects and spiritual power from villages, the Royal Academy’s Armory, and its Metal-Type Hall, Ding Ding enlarges the cauldron, breaks through the sky, and draws a massive thunderbolt. Background / History
Ding Ding originally served the Child Emperor. In Dongfang Minghui’s visions of the past, a silver-haired master sends the Longevity Cauldron into battle against the Dragon God. The Soul-Separation Mirror weakens Ding Ding through an effect described as “Soul loss”; a later vision shows the Dragon Queen using the mirror against it. Ding Ding retaliates, cracks the mirror, and is flung away 415.
According to Yuchi Shou, Ding Ding remained on Ice Lotus Mountain for a hundred years. He takes this abandonment as evidence that its master died, but Ding Ding later reports seeing its master promise to return after completing an important task. The master’s fate remains unresolved 414 415 544 555.
Ding Ding’s connection to the mirror becomes a focus of the group’s investigation into its missing memories. Qian Zihang’s self-detonation eventually restores those memories, although Ding Ding initially remains unresponsive in cauldron form. After awakening, it demands to settle accounts with the Dragon God and Dragon Queen 415 538 544 555.
Appearance
- Small spirit form: Tiny enough to sit on a shoulder, cling to a finger, or hide behind someone’s neck; it has fluttering wings, round cheeks, and small, beanlike eyes 396 514 518.
- Borrowed face: Takes Dongfang Minghui’s likeness despite having no gender. It can also assume Qian Wanyu’s appearance, but refuses to do so when asked again 394 416.
- Cauldron form: An exquisite cauldron bearing flowing Ten-Thousand-Longevity Vine Patterns; its size ranges from palm-sized to enormous 415 588.
- Other forms: Can become a small rod or a cone-like object, and can enlarge its spirit form to match a giant monster 454 588.
Personality
Ding Ding is inquisitive, playful, and intensely food-driven. It asks endless questions while learning about spirit herbs, imitates its companions’ gestures, and regularly demands grilled fish, fish slices, or Teething Sticks. Food promises are an effective way to secure its cooperation 396 416 424.
Its curiosity repeatedly creates dangers it does not anticipate. Ding Ding tries to conceal mistakes, including destroying Minghui’s gardens, and worries that punishment means losing its fish or affection. Minghui responds by requiring honesty and restitution while reassuring it that it is still loved 396 421.
Ding Ding’s loyalties are direct and personal: anyone who hurts “Little Nine” becomes a bad person. It eagerly retaliates against her attackers, but also shows vulnerability when faced with separation, mortality, or its missing master. Learning that Golden Bean tears consume its energy makes it unusually quiet; its inability to find the Child Emperor later brings it to tears again 408 409 518 555.
Abilities & Skills
Longevity Cauldron
Ding Ding and the Longevity Cauldron are explicitly identified as the same being 396.
- Enlarges the cauldron to shelter entire groups from attacks, floods, and dangerous surroundings 401 422 427.
- Stores and transports people, weapons, supplies, and enormous beast carcasses 470 518 567.
- Opens and closes access to its interior, including abruptly throwing allies or enemies inside 419 471.
- Uses the cauldron as a battering weapon and as a tool for tunneling underground 392 454.
- Interior heat can endanger passengers; Ding Ding later adjusts the cauldron’s heat while sheltering fugitives 462 518.
Metal and Weapon-Spirit Consumption
Ding Ding replenishes itself by absorbing metal-type Spiritual Power and consuming metal-bearing objects 408 422 588.
- Absorbs power directly from Qian Wanyu’s fingers 414 416.
- Extracts and eats golden weapon spirits from animated swords, leaving the blades dull and powerless 422.
- Seizes weapons, armor, tools, and insignia for nourishment; it can reshape stolen weapons into tiny models or dried-fish forms before eating them 565 567 588.
- Golden Bean tears consume its own Spiritual Power, requiring replenishment afterward 408 555.
Strength and Combat
Ding Ding’s small appearance conceals considerable physical force 468 470.
- Lifts the extremely heavy Soul-Suppressing Stone and pulls Lance’s chains out of the walls—feats the others struggle to reproduce 424 468.
- Uses a Giant Worm as a weapon and kills a two-headed cave monster 408 427.
- Breaks out after being swallowed by the Nine-Headed Infant, then subdues and kills it 470.
- Condenses a Spiritual Power blade by copying Minghui’s throwing posture, then enlarges it and practices cutting tree branches 419.
- Repeatedly clashes with the Radiant Sword, pestering it enough to give Qian Wanyu time to observe its weakening strength 480.
- Its small fireballs prove ineffective against the Thousand-Year Tree Spirit’s vines 419.
Alchemy
Ding Ding instinctively produces an unusually potent green elixir after watching Minghui refine pills 396.
- Learns to identify simple spirit herbs and remembers the order of Minghui’s preparations 396.
- Tosses gathered ingredients into the cauldron, where Toothless’s retained flame automatically draws them into the fire 396.
- The resulting elixir reminds Minghui that Ding Ding is itself an alchemy furnace, not merely a traveling companion 396.
Fierce Beast Containment
Ding Ding keeps an ice-aligned Fierce Beast inside the Longevity Cauldron and releases it when the group needs help 390 419 425.
- Releases and recaptures it during the confrontation with Cheng Jiang and Lahan 390.
- Calls on it against the Thousand-Year Tree Spirit and during the attempt to breach the Six-Element Spirit Shield 419 425.
- Its prolonged control over the beast makes the once-ferocious creature afraid to misbehave 416 421.
Scouting and Recognition
- Flies ahead to scout and swims underwater without obstruction, seeing far enough to pursue the Golden Wire Net 407 408.
- Locates Toothless by checking familiar gathering places rather than following Qian Wanyu’s unsuccessful search 399.
- Initially exposes a false Minghui because the impostor does not use its name. Later impostors copy that detail, defeating the test 392.
- Carries messages between separated companions, although its short, repetitive explanations often require interpretation 399 480.
Vulnerabilities
- Soul-Separation Mirror: Causes abnormal behavior, prolonged sleep, and visions connected to its past. Ding Ding fears another mirror encountered in the Wildfolk cave 413 414 415 427.
- Containment limits: A powerful lake monster overwhelms Ding Ding while trapped in the cauldron; Qian Wanyu orders its release 561.
- Barriers: Cannot always pass through energy shields and is knocked senseless by the Dragonfolk gate’s barrier 424 482.
- Amplified sound: Impacts and tapping resonate inside the cauldron, stunning Ding Ding and agitating Qing Mo’s soul sea 422 588.
- Wounds inflicted during Qian Wanyu’s punishment disappear when Ding Ding transforms, but it can still suffer exhaustion and periods of immobility 392 538 588.
Relationships
- Dongfang Minghui / Jian Tong Yao — Ding Ding’s “Little Nine,” caregiver, and favorite companion. She names it, feeds it, teaches it responsibility, and comforts it over its missing master; Ding Ding remains attached to her after her memory loss 390 396 544 555.

Trivia
- Ding Ding demonstrates its chosen name by tapping the cauldron to produce a “ding-ding” clang 390.

- Ding Ding tends to solve problems by throwing the person or object involved into the Longevity Cauldron 471.
- Its side story reverses the usual household dynamic: without Minghui and Wanyu to restrain it, Ding Ding becomes the demanding “little overlord” of Qing Mo and Little Color 588.
