Background / History

Liu Qing originally sought Gyarados as the Water-type member of his planned team. Remembering a waterfall in Viridian Forest where one might be found, he searched the area and spent an afternoon fishing after failing to locate a Gyarados directly 3.

He instead caught a Shiny Magikarp. With support from Liu Qing and his Pokémon, Magikarp climbed the waterfall under a narrowing beam of moonlight and evolved. The newly evolved Gyarados carried the exhausted Scyther, Chansey, and Exeggcute back down before affectionately nuzzling Liu Qing 3 619.

Liu Qing designed his training around strengthening his enormous body while correcting its disadvantages. Deep-sea pressure and resistance became recurring tools for developing defense, speed, and attacks that remained effective underwater 5 69.

Years later, the team returned to the waterfall and reenacted the climb. Although Gyarados could now ascend effortlessly, he accepted the others’ help as before. Liu Qing remembered the original climb as the first time their hearts had truly come together 619.

Appearance

  • Exceptional size: Eight to nine meters long immediately after evolution, growing to roughly ten meters after his first deep-sea training period 3 5.
  • Purplish-red scales: Initially red, his scales deepen to purplish crimson after training. They later appear translucent in sunlight while remaining visibly thick and heavy 3 5 687.
  • Five fins: Has one more fin than an ordinary Gyarados; the extra dorsal fin draws public attention when his whole body is visible during the Indigo League quarterfinals 3 33.
  • Shiny entrance effects: Golden sparkles accompany his release from a Poké Ball 6 12 687.
  • Long, flexible body: Can attack with his head while his tail is recovering, extending his effective reach in close combat 149 687.

Personality

Gyarados is affectionate toward Liu Qing despite his intimidating appearance. He repeatedly presses his head against his Trainer’s chest, responds readily to encouragement, and shields Liu Qing from the waves created by his finishing attack in the Whirl Islands Tournament 3 5 60 81.

He enjoys strong opposition: sensing Han Ye’s Tyranitar’s strength immediately excites him. Pain and frustration can make him furious, but Liu Qing’s commands restore his composure even when he is enraged or trapped 33 35 50.

He also retains a strong attachment to his original home. On returning to the waterfall, he excitedly swims and rolls among the Magikarp before joining the team’s reenactment of his evolution 619.

Abilities & Skills

Intimidate and Swift Swim

Gyarados possesses Intimidate while retaining Magikarp’s Swift Swim, giving him two simultaneous Abilities 44 699.

  • Intimidate: His presence frightens opponents including Jolteon, Ninetales, and Drake’s Dragonair 6 12 44.
  • Swift Swim: Doubles his speed in rain, allowing his huge body to move with unexpected speed 44 596.
  • Limits: Hua Yan’s Dragonite negates Intimidate through Inner Focus. Lance’s Dragonite remains unafraid of his roar 149 687.

Extra Dorsal Fin and Flight

His extra dorsal fin increases his species potential and enables genuine flight 19 699.

  • Trains aerial movement and landing control alongside Salamence 60.
  • Can coil, change direction, and pursue airborne opponents without remaining dependent on water 149 296.
  • Eventually lands without causing a tremor, contrasting with his earlier ground-shaking landings 60 596.

Electricity Storage

The fin at the center of his body functions as an electricity-storage sac, allowing him to store and rapidly discharge electrical energy 40 44 687.

  • Releases electricity through his body and tail into opponents held in close contact 40 50 295.
  • Partially offsets incoming Electric-type attacks by discharging stored electricity or countering with his own Electric moves 6 44.
  • Not immunity: Jolteon’s and Dragonite’s Thunder still cause pain and damage; his Water/Flying typing remains vulnerable to electricity 6 44 687.

Strength, Defense, and Body Control

Deep-sea conditioning develops his ability to withstand pressure and execute powerful attacks against resistance 5 69.

  • Shrugs off Jolteon’s Pin Missile when the projectiles bounce from his scales 6.
  • Breaks Leech Seed’s bindings with Giga Impact and escapes Solrock’s Confusion through physical effort 35 327.
  • Uses coiling and constriction to restrain opponents, including Milotic and Xun Chaoze’s Black Gyarados 50 295.
  • Adopts a rapid coiled striking technique based on Koga’s Arbok, using it to land Ice Fang on Gastrodon 51.
  • Remains vulnerable to Rock-type attacks and localized paralysis; Steelix’s DragonBreath paralyzes his tail and prevents Liu Qing from safely relying on Aqua Tail 35 40.

Moves

Move Applications and limitations
Aqua Tail Main physical attack. Can clear airborne sand, soak an opponent for an electrical follow-up, and strike with enough force to break through Solrock’s Psycho Wave 40 327.
Ice Fang Produces extended fangs of freezing energy. Can freeze rock, water formations, and opponents; its reach extends beyond his physical jaws 3 296 687 688.
Thunderbolt Provides ranged offense and close-contact electrical attacks. Also evaporates moisture from Gastrodon’s Muddy Water to free his trapped tail 50 149 295.
Giga Impact Powerful full-body charge learned through training. Leaves his body temporarily immobilized afterward, prompting Liu Qing to train shorter recovery and safer positioning 5 19.
Rain Dance Activates Swift Swim and strengthens Water-type attacks. Can interrupt Solar Beam, but its rain can also strengthen an opponent’s water-based tactics 596 688.
Thunder Later electrical attack capable of meeting Lance’s Dragonite’s Thunder head-on 687.
Splash; Tackle Retained from Magikarp and still included in his later move summaries 3 699.

Relationships

  • Liu Qing — Trainer and close companion. Their bond forms through the waterfall climb; Gyarados remains affectionate and responsive to his direction 3 5 619.
  • Cynthia’s Milotic — Initially an opponent whom Gyarados defeats. They later become mates and produce a purple, spotted Egg; Gyarados anxiously stays beside her during labor and helps care for it afterward 50 249.
  • Salamence — Teammate and flight-training partner. They also combine Giga Impact attacks against Suicune 58 60.
  • Scizor, Exeggutor, and Blissey — Longtime teammates who, in their earlier forms, help him complete the waterfall climb. They participate in its later reenactment 3 619.
  • Dushe — Recurring opponent. Gyarados defeats his Feraligatr in both the Whirl Islands Tournament final and the Silver Conference semifinal 81 140.
  • Xun Chaoze’s Black Gyarados — Opposing Gyarados fought in the rain. The battle escalates when the Black Gyarados activates its own Dark Frenzy ability 295 296 297.
