Background / History
Lucario originally traveled with Aaron, an Aura successor whose training gave him exceptional command of Aura. Aaron sealed him inside the Aura Guardian Staff, where he remained for hundreds of years. Believing Aaron had betrayed him and fled, Lucario lost trust in Aura users 150 151 155.
Liu Qing’s Aura awakening stirred Lucario’s sealed power. With Princess Lin’s permission, Liu Qing channeled Aura through the staff and released him. Lucario refused to join him, but followed when offered information about Aaron. Liu Qing then made that information the stake of a battle against Arcanine. Although defeated, Lucario broke out of the attempted capture and insisted he could continue fighting 150 151.
Instead of forcing another battle, Liu Qing treated Lucario’s injuries and took him to the World Tree. Through a Time Flower, Lucario learned that Aaron had sacrificed himself to restore the tree’s energy and end a war. He agreed to follow Liu Qing, who rejected a master-servant relationship and welcomed him as a friend and partner. Lucario subsequently entered a Poké Ball voluntarily 152.
Appearance
- Coloration: Described by Liu Qing as a blue Pokémon 153.
- Condition and bearing: Wallace notes smooth, fluffy fur, a well-proportioned physique, a steady stance, keen eyes, and tightly controlled power 200.
- Aura sensors: Four appendages at the back of his head extend horizontally when he searches with Aura 155.
- Battle entrance: Before facing Bruno’s Steelix, he appears with his eyes closed and kneeling on one knee, then stands after sensing his opponent 668.
Personality
Lucario is fiercely independent and initially reacts to confinement with anger. His refusal to remain captured after losing to Arcanine reflects both his determination and his distrust of another Aura user attempting to control him. Nevertheless, he instinctively protects Princess Lin from the shock wave caused by his clash with Salamence 151.
He enjoys worthy opponents and respects commitment in battle. Typhlosion’s resilience intensifies his fighting spirit, while Tetsuya’s exhausted Meowth earns his respect after explaining why it refuses to surrender. Lucario agrees to answer that resolve with his full strength 183 239.
Defeat can turn his determination into harmful overtraining. After losing to Han Ye’s Tyranitar, he trains without rest and repeatedly collapses from exhaustion despite Liu Qing’s attempts to stop him 254.
His acceptance of Aaron’s sacrifice does not immediately end his grief. He continues spending time alone and avoids Cynthia’s Lucario’s affection. During a later visit to the World Tree, Liu Qing recognizes his fear of abandonment and assures him that Aaron need not be forgotten or replaced. Lucario becomes more at ease and renews his trust in their partnership 620.
Abilities & Skills
Aura Perception
Aaron’s instruction made Lucario unusually accomplished at using Aura; Cynthia explicitly considers his mastery superior to that of her own Lucario 155.
- Tracking: Searches for Budew and detects concealed opponents, including Vaporeon after it vanishes with Acid Armor 155 288.
- Fighting without sight: Evades attacks through dust with his eyes closed and senses Machamp behind rocks 244 669.
- Life-energy assessment: Recognizes that a Pokémon calming the sea is consuming its life’s source energy and will disappear when it runs out 152.
- Aura recognition: Detects an Aura in Ash identical to Aaron’s 203.
- Combined searches: Links Aura with Liu Qing to search for May; also assists Xatu and Claydol in locating Cynthia through her Mystic Water pendant 448 541.
Telepathy and Aura Link
Lucario communicates directly through Telepathy, addressing humans and Pokémon alike 151 239.
- His Aura connection with Liu Qing lets him sense an intended move before the spoken command is completed, enabling an immediate Aura Sphere against Milotic 201.
- He explains Latios’s return and promise of repayment through Telepathy 160.
- After Liu Qing restores him with Aura following the Swampert battle, he responds with gratitude 292.
Martial Arts and Agility
Lucario combines close-range strikes, staff techniques, flips, and momentum control rather than relying solely on raw power 183 289.
- Blaze Kick combinations: Turns a blocked side kick into an aerial axe kick against Typhlosion; later attacks Swampert’s jaw while recovering from the ground 183 290.
- Bone Rush defense: Spins or thrusts his staff to block Mud Bombs 289 290.
- Staff-assisted movement: Uses the staff’s rebound as a springboard to escape Muddy Water 290.
- Impact reduction: Curls up and somersaults to reduce the force of throws or wind-driven attacks 244 328.
- Adaptation after disarmament: Switches to Close Combat after Machamp destroys his bone weapon 669.
Known Moves
The roster records the same seven moves in both Volume Three and Volume Six 340 699.
| Move | Demonstrated use |
|---|---|
| Aura Sphere | Fast, rapidly rotating projectile that can also be delivered at point-blank range. Defeats Absol with a strike to the back of its neck 244. |
| Flash Cannon | Metallic energy beam; used to strike Medicham’s exposed back 254. |
| Blaze Kick | Flaming kicks used in combination attacks. Repeated strikes ignite Swampert and interrupt its attempted Muddy Water 183 291. |
| Dragon Pulse | Breaks through Milotic’s water-enhanced Twister 200. |
| Bone Rush | Creates a glowing blue bone staff for striking, blocking, and assisted jumps 254 290. |
| Close Combat | Breaks apart the remaining force of Hydro Pump and allows Lucario to escape Machamp’s aerial hold 291 669. |
| Seismic Toss | Grabs and throws Swampert after drawing it into close range 289. |
Limits and Vulnerabilities
- His Steel typing disadvantages him against Typhlosion’s Fire attacks 182.
- Aura Sphere is not unbeatable: Swampert’s Muddy Water absorbs one, and its Hydro Pump breaks through another 290 291.
- Accumulated damage and exhaustion reduce his speed and precision. Two entries onto Han Ye’s three layers of Spikes cost him half his stamina before the Tyranitar fight 244.
- His bone weapon can be caught or destroyed, requiring him to change techniques 289 669.
Equipment / Items
- Aura Guardian Staff — former confinement: Aaron sealed Lucario inside its crystal orb. Liu Qing’s Aura releases him, after which the staff is returned to Princess Lin 151.
- Ordinary Poké Ball — initial travel ball: Lucario voluntarily enters it after joining Liu Qing 152.
- Sky-blue crystal Poké Ball — personal ball: Family specialists manufacture it from crystal supplied by Mew. It retains ordinary Poké Ball functions while being especially suited to Aura-using Pokémon 152 155.
Relationships
- Aaron — Former companion and Aura mentor. Lucario’s belief that Aaron betrayed him gives way to respect after he learns the truth, though the loss continues to affect him 151 152 620.
- Liu Qing — Current trainer and partner. Liu Qing insists on friendship rather than servitude, heals him with Aura, and helps him confront his fear of abandonment. Lucario repeatedly visits him during his recovery after saving Latios 152 153 292 620.
- Princess Lin — Protects her from the aftermath of his attack on Salamence, apparently recognizing something familiar in her features 151.
- Togetic / Togekiss — Welcomes him enthusiastically, perches on his shoulder, and tells him about Liu Qing’s rescue of Celebi. They later return to the World Tree together 152 620.
- Mew — Meets Lucario when Liu Qing introduces his new partner; reunites with him during the later World Tree visit 152 620.
- Cynthia’s Lucario — A female Lucario who shows affection toward him. His avoidance is later connected to his unresolved feelings about Aaron, rather than established lack of interest 155 620.
- Ash — Possesses an Aura Lucario recognizes as Aaron’s. Liu Qing suggests reincarnation as a possibility, but this is not confirmed 203.
- Xun Chaoze’s Swampert — Earns his mutual respect through an evenly matched battle ending in a double knockout 291.
