Background / History
Cynthia began her Trainer journey with Garchomp and spent her early career traveling around Sinnoh. She formed bonds with the other five members of her original team before catching them. Although she initially avoided League conferences, she participated in numerous sporting events. One early victory was Mountain Spring Town’s first Water-type Pokémon Catching Contest, where she obtained the Shellos that later became her Gastrodon 52 382 525.
Her family arranged an engagement with Liu Qing. At their first meeting, he recognized her as the future Sinnoh Champion from the anime he remembered from his previous life. Cynthia agreed that she would become his fiancée if he defeated her final Pokémon in their battle. Their engagement is confirmed shortly afterward, when Liu Qing introduces her as his fiancée during their Southern Islands vacation 47 51 55.
Watching recordings of Liu Qing’s Kanto League matches encouraged Cynthia to enter League competitions herself. Before returning to Sinnoh, she pledged to pursue the Champion position alongside him and declared that she would not marry someone weaker than herself 52 55.
Appearance
- Hair: Golden, reaching her knees in her first appearance; arranged to conceal her left eye 47.
- Eyes: Silver-gray 159.
- Early appearance: A youthful face, not yet possessing the bearing Liu Qing associates with her future Champion identity 47.
- Champion clothing: A black Champion Outfit after taking office; an elaborate purple robe for her exhibition match against Caitlin, which she removes before battling 308 642.
Personality
Cynthia is usually quiet and poised, but becomes intensely confident and focused in battle. She retains her composure after losing Roserade in her first match with Liu Qing and immediately prepares her next response. Once absorbed in a battle, she rarely lets unrelated matters distract her 48 157 308.
Her approach to raising Pokémon emphasizes bonds and responsible training rather than collecting as many partners as possible. She argues that Pokémon should remain in the wild if their Trainer lacks the time or energy to care for and train them properly. Her Championship does not make her arrogant: she welcomes a rookie’s questions and values Trainers willing to approach her despite her reputation 52 507.
With Liu Qing, she is affectionate, often shy, and deeply concerned for his safety. She asks him to avoid reckless use of a power that might endanger his life and personally prepares food and administers medicine while he recovers from an injury 154 348.
Her romantic jealousy can sharply contrast with her battlefield composure. She confronts Liu Qing over Elesa, threatens Elesa during their rivalry, and reacts angrily when Shui Nai demands that she abandon him. Nevertheless, she later allows Liu Qing to meet Elesa before his Champion challenge, believing that preventing him from resolving his feelings would harm him 310 461 600 626.
Abilities & Skills
Pokémon Battle Command
- Countering hidden opponents: Uses Roserade’s spinning Extrasensory to expose Gengar and Spiritomb’s Confusion to search for and restrain it 48.
- Precise move control: Spiritomb’s Ominous Wind absorbs an incoming Shadow Ball and carries it back toward Gengar 48.
- Combination attacks: Milotic uses a Twister containing ice and water to defeat Exeggutor 50.
- Protecting her team: Immediately recalls Spiritomb when its broken Confusion causes dangerous psychic backlash 48.
- Opponent preparation: Watches Liu Qing’s Kanto League recordings before facing him and recognizes Arcanine’s combination attack 49.
- Championship-level endurance: Defeats Flint’s first five Pokémon using Spiritomb, Gastrodon, Roserade, and Metagross, then finishes the title defense with Garchomp 601.
Power of Overcoming
- Possesses an innate power that brings her close to Pokémon’s hearts 644.
- Attempts to use the power of overcoming against the “darkened” Lugia, but its resistance causes her pain and forces her backward 556.
- Joins hands with Caitlin to enter a passage between minds, where Cynthia communicates without speaking aloud 556.
- The encounter places strain on her: she is later seen standing motionless with closed eyes and blood trickling from her nostrils 557.
- Her affinity does not guarantee immediate trust. Iris’s Dragonite initially rejects her touch, although her sincere reassurance softens its hostility 644.
Teaching and Battle Analysis
- Distinguishes a Trainer’s personal level from a Pokémon’s fighting ability, explaining how superior commands and attention to detail can compensate for a less experienced partner 466.
- Teaches that psychological pressure can begin before the referee starts a match, through words, actions, expressions, and attacks on an opponent’s confidence 471.
- Regularly questions Liu Yuan and Lusana about matches they watch; Elesa acknowledges learning from these explanations as well 475 478.
- Advises rookies to battle others, review their experiences, adopt useful strengths, and discard ineffective habits rather than rely on solitary training alone 520.
- Stops Lusana from continuing when frustration and desperation to win make further battling unproductive 626.
- Explains Mega Evolution’s requirements and temporary nature, while stressing that strengthening a Pokémon does not raise its Trainer’s conceptual realm 712.
Sporting and Practical Skills
- Has extensive experience in sporting events from her pre-League travels and exceptional coordination with Gastrodon in water racing 525.
- Drives during field operations; when confronting Jupiter, she brings her car to a drifting stop and vaults out while Garchomp subdues the opponent 449.

“Everyone, for this race, I'm not the Sinnoh Champion, but a competitor just like you. Let's have an exciting, hard-fought race together!” 523
