Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-eye Kamui Mangekyō Sharingan | 8 34 | Already possesses spatial travel and intangibility; his exposed right eye is explicitly identified as the Kamui Mangekyō Sharingan. Its original awakening is not shown in the supplied passages. |
| Reunited Kamui eyes; Susanoo | 73 81 93 | Takes Kakashi's left eye back. Subsequently manifests a black armored Susanoo and its Ten Directions Kamui Sword; later battles explicitly confirm that both Kamui eyes are reunited. |
| Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan | 148 149 150 | Returns with restored, “eternal” ocular light. His new eyes provide Fugaku's Great Debate and Amaterasu's Edge, while extending Kamui intangibility to ten minutes. |
| Perfect Susanoo | 172 | Documented during his confrontation with Madara. Its arsenal includes the Ten Directions Kamui Sword and Nine-Foot Kamui Tomoe. |
| Impure World Reincarnation | 184 | Arranges his own death and has Tobi reincarnate him using a White Zetsu sacrifice. Retains Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan in the reincarnated body while preserving his physical eyes separately. |
| Infinite Intangibility | 220 225 233 | His reincarnated form sustains Kamui intangibility without the living body's time limit, although he must still become tangible to attack or touch a target. |
| Cessation of Arhat | 366 | First documented use severs his connection to Rinne Rebirth, allowing him to reject resurrection and remain reincarnated. |
| Izanagi alongside Amaterasu's Edge | 464 465 | Demonstrates survival beyond ordinary intangibility while retaining immunity to harmful genjutsu. Initially described as indefinitely sustainable, but Obito subsequently estimates ten minutes or less while fighting because of chakra consumption. |
| Rinne Sharingan | 525 | After consuming a fruit while reincarnated, his body's cracks disappear and a forehead Rinne Sharingan settles into a pitch-black coloration. He explicitly remains dead. |
Background / History
Obito was Minato's student and Kakashi's comrade. He once dreamed of becoming Hokage and was remembered as an Uchiha hero who died at Kannabi Bridge during the Third Shinobi World War. Madara actually rescued him and selected him to guide Nagato toward resurrecting Madara 3 63 85.
Rin's death shattered Obito's faith in the world. His response extended beyond wanting her back: he came to regard reality itself as hopeless and embraced the Eye of the Moon Plan. His love became obsessive hatred, making the promise of an Infinite Dream his last refuge 179 200 229.
Obito caused the Nine-Tails' rampage sixteen years before the main events. He exploited Kushina's childbirth to seize the beast, threatened the newborn Naruto to draw Minato away from her, and then attacked Konoha. Kushina later confronts him over the difference between pursuing a dream and using destruction to vent hatred 179 225.
Appearance
- Face: Deeply creased; frequently concealed during his years directing Akatsuki 73 85.
- Early mask: Orange and spiral-patterned, with an opening exposing his right Sharingan 4 34.
- Later mask: White during the period following Madara's return 88.
- Unmasked appearance: No longer wears a mask by his later confrontation with Naruto at Kannabi Bridge 150 151.
- Reincarnated body: Initially wears a black robe over a body marked by Impure World Reincarnation cracks 184.
- Post-fruit appearance: The cracks disappear, a black divine robe surrounds him, and a pitch-black Rinne Sharingan opens on his forehead 525.
Personality
Obito is calculating, secretive, and willing to manipulate others' loyalties. He withholds Naruto's desertion from Sasuke, pressures Sasuke through force, and presents their cooperation as shared Uchiha interests. He nevertheless adjusts his strategy when circumstances change, postponing war when targeted tailed-beast capture appears more practical 20 22 42 47.
His commitment to Infinite Tsukuyomi is rooted in despair rather than simple ambition. He rejects Naruto's explanation of the plan's deception because abandoning it would mean rejecting the dream that sustained him. Naruto's repeated mercy troubles him, but he initially interprets it as opportunism rather than compassion 150 200.
After defeat, Obito first seeks death as atonement. Naruto persuades him that this would be another escape from responsibility, and he instead commits himself to opposing the Ōtsutsuki. His later conduct combines that resolve with renewed warmth: he reconciles with Kakashi, protects Minato, teases Tobi, and openly favors A-Juan 229 230 245 332 482 491.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
- Spatial travel: Opens vortices to enter and leave his personal dimension. Travel uses ocularly placed spatial markers; after more than a decade of preparation, his coverage includes Konoha and roughly one hundred miles around it 8 12.
- Intangibility: Allows weapons, ninjutsu, Susanoo attacks, and even Tailed Beast Bombs to pass through him 38 42.
- Contact sharing: Kamui's phasing can extend to someone in physical contact with him 328.
- Right-eye absorption: Draws targets and objects into spacetime at close range; he also stores and releases iron spikes and other projectiles through it 38 64.
- Left-eye ranged Kamui: Distorts space at a distance. Obito confirms a maximum range of 120 meters while deliberately trying to make Naruto underestimate it 93 94.
- Remote release: The left eye can release stored material as well as absorb it, allowing attacks to emerge away from Obito's position 94.
- Environmental removal: Absorbs battlefield mist to restore visibility 93 94.
- Spacetime Prison: Converging blocks imprison the captured Eight-Tails inside his dimension 41.
Limits
- He becomes tangible when attacking, touching a target, or actively using Kamui to distort space 38 93 179.
- His Eternal Mangekyō extends living-body intangibility to ten minutes; reincarnation later permits Infinite Intangibility 150 220 225.
- Dimmed eyesight causes a Kamui attack to miss Naruto and Konan 96.
- Tōra's target-locking dōjutsu can strike him despite Kamui intangibility 463.
- Keeping hostile beings inside the Kamui dimension can make phasing a liability; he refuses to store the Ten-Tails there for that reason 400.
Sharingan Genjutsu and Tailed-Beast Control
- Controls the Eight-Tails after Tobi restrains it with Wood Dragons 41.
- Establishes a summoning contract using his own blood and the Eight-Tails' blood 41.
- Commands the captive beast to fire Tailed Beast Bombs through Kamui, turning his eye into a delivery point for heavy attacks 42 64.
- Initially sustains enough control for six Tailed Beast Bombs before a recovery interval is necessary 64 65.
- After reuniting both eyes, states that he can continue releasing bombs until the Eight-Tails itself collapses from exhaustion 93 95.
- Controls the Mizukage while preparing an ambush against Naruto 90.
- Uses genjutsu interrogation to establish Violet's position and connection to Minato before making her a hostage 150.
Great Debate
Originally Fugaku Uchiha's left-eye dōjutsu, Great Debate records a target's combat capabilities and stores them for simulated battles 149.
- Records chakra, techniques, combat intelligence, hidden abilities, and other combat-related qualities at the moment of observation 149.
- Runs simulations on its own mental battlefield 149.
- Gives Obito advance knowledge of Naruto's Nine-Tails chakra form, including Good and Evil Perception 150.
Amaterasu's Edge
Originally Fugaku's right-eye dōjutsu, Amaterasu's Edge grants immunity to mental attacks 150.
- Blocks genjutsu, Kotoamatsukami, and techniques such as the Yamanaka Clan's Mind Body Switch 150.
- Also prevents beneficial projection genjutsu from sharing information with him 200.
- Initially conflicts with Izanagi because Izanagi is cast on the user himself 150 172.
- Later protects him from Izanami while he uses Izanagi; the mechanism behind this changed compatibility is not explained in the supplied passages 464.
Telescope
- Resolves details as small as facial pores from thousands of meters away 149.
- Locks onto distant targets such as Kabuto to calculate an attack's trajectory 287.
Susanoo and Divine Weapons
Obito's Susanoo is pitch-black and develops from skeletal and armored forms to Perfect Susanoo 81 96 172.
- Ten Directions Kamui Sword: Banishes pierced targets to the Realm of Nothingness, a spacetime prison described as lacking space and time. It can pierce Naruto's Susanoo 81 183.
- Nine-Foot Kamui Tomoe: Tracks a designated target and becomes intangible before impact to avoid interception 172 233.
- Shared phasing limit: In his living-body battle with Madara, the tomoe's intangibility shares Obito's own exhausted time allowance 172.
- Absorption and release: The tomoe can transport targets into spacetime or release what Kamui has stored 222 233.
- Kamui Shuriken: Supplements his indiscriminate Tailed Beast Bomb bombardment 95.
Wood Release and Modified Physiology
His Hashirama cells come from White Zetsu and retain their plant aspect 168.
- Cutting Sprigs: Rains lethal wooden branches over a battlefield 38.
- Thorn Killing Technique: Binds an opponent with coiling wood, including through Susanoo's vulnerable underside 42.
- Hell's Disorder: Produces a violently expanding mass of wood from his shoulder 96.
- Previously cast Wood Release remains active while he phases with Kamui 42.
- Can survive without eating, but his remaining human half would still age and die while alive 168.
- Both Kabuto and Obito state that he cannot awaken the Rinnegan through his existing potential 168 184.
Fire Release and Barriers
- Blast Wave Wild Dance: Combines Fire Release with Kamui's distortion field to create a spiraling firestorm 42 64.
- Twin Whirlpool Blast Wave Wild Dance: Uses both Kamui eyes to produce a battlefield-wide firestorm 222.
- Uchiha Flame Formation: A sophisticated Uchiha barrier technique that Obito can pass through using Kamui 38 42.
- Spacetime modification: Prevents Flying Thunder God from transporting targets outside the barrier, although movement within it remains possible 64 93.
- Four Symbols Resonance: Releases four Eight-Tails bombs into the enclosed battlefield while Obito phases through the resulting destruction 64.
Temporal and Karmic Dōjutsu
- Omodaru: Reverses time to revive fallen comrades 463 464.
- Time Stop: Freezes targets within a gray zone, including Madara 183.
- Time-Stop Barrier: Moves with Obito and freezes incoming attacks upon entry 226.
- Cessation of Arhat: Severs karmic connections. Obito uses it to reject Rinne Rebirth and to halt the Ten-Tails' transformation into a God Tree 366 400.
- Cessation of Arhat cannot remove chakra as a technique's fundamental requirement 465.
Izanagi and Reincarnated Endurance
- Before gaining Amaterasu's Edge, keeps a spare left Sharingan specifically for Izanagi; Naruto describes a ten-minute interval during which attacks cannot kill him 68.
- Arranges reincarnation to gain replenishing chakra and another manifested pair of Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 184.
- Later survives Tōra's repeated attempts to kill him through Izanagi, with Amaterasu's Edge eliminating the proposed Izanami counter 464.
- His subsequent estimate limits combat use to ten minutes at most, possibly less, despite the preceding claim of indefinite sustainability 465.
Lightning Blade
- Demonstrates Lightning Blade during his reunion with Kakashi 245.
- Kamui: Lightning Blade: Combines lightning with Kamui, producing a pitch-black attack. Against Kaguya, he phases through All-Killing Ash Bones before becoming tangible to strike 356.
