Previous Timeline

Naruto graduated from Konoha’s Ninja Academy at twelve. At sixteen, he defeated Pain and fought in the Fourth Shinobi World War, joining Sasuke to seal Kaguya. He eventually became the Seventh Hokage 1.

Successive Ōtsutsuki invasions continued after the war. Fighting Isshiki cost Naruto the Nine-Tails and Sasuke his Rinnegan, forcing them to entrust the future to Boruto’s generation. Boruto overcame multiple crises, but Shinshiki’s arrival destroyed that renewed prosperity. Naruto’s wife, children, friends, and comrades died in the resulting battle 1.

By Konoha Year 128, Naruto was an elderly survivor living on an unnamed island near the Land of Water. His return to the past gives him another chance to prevent that catastrophe 1 308.

Return and Defection

Returning to the period following Pain’s defeat, Naruto tells Konan that he intends to inherit Nagato’s Rinnegan. His new strategy is to gather village secret techniques, Kekkei Genkai, and the tailed beasts’ power. He deliberately leaves Konoha so that his actions will not bring retaliation upon the village 1 3.

Naruto defeats Anko’s interception team without killing its members and rescues Anko from her suicide technique. Root subsequently murders Tokuma, Muta, and Yawara to provide evidence against him. The accusation divides his former comrades, although Hinata and Shikamaru question his guilt 6 7 12.

He recruits Orochimaru for his research and techniques, permitting continued experimentation within limits rather than demanding absolute harmlessness. After defeating him, Naruto also forces Orochimaru to abandon his immediate pursuit of Sasuke’s body 9 10.

Appearance

• Facial features: Blue eyes and three symmetrical whisker marks on each cheek identify him even in old age 1.
• Hair: Naturally becomes red after his full Uzumaki bloodline awakens. He dyes it blond again out of familiarity and later explains that it honors Minato 125 216.

Personality

Naruto’s second life is shaped by bereavement and decades of combat experience. He becomes more pragmatic about research, forbidden techniques, and alliances with former enemies. He even allows Sasuke’s hatred to stimulate his growth, while committing to stop him whenever he threatens Konoha 9 72.

His protectiveness remains central to his decisions. He refuses to kill the Konoha ninja sent after him, risks himself for subordinates, and ultimately rejects forcibly taking the tailed beasts’ chakra. He wants them to protect the future alongside him, not become resources seized in its name 7 150 313.

He carefully controls when others learn about his future memories, believing that information alone cannot overcome their existing experiences and prejudices. Nevertheless, maintaining this guarded persona is exhausting, and his mask partly hides that emotional burden 72 107 232.

Shinshiki becomes both his greatest fear and a psychological obstacle to further growth. Naruto eventually recognizes that this obsession has pushed him toward recklessness. After Shinshiki’s death, he promises to stop making unilateral decisions and face future threats alongside his allies 510 521.
