Background / History
Captain of the *Glory Knight*
Pex belongs to the Lampasters, a prominent noble family whose members include planetary governors, army commanders, and fleet admirals. As captain of the Glory Knight, he monitors an Ork civil war so the Imperium can intervene when one faction approaches victory 8 22.
An ambush by three Ork pirate ships leaves the cruiser damaged and infested with boarders. Pex berates his soldiers for failing to eliminate them, prompting Commissar Japhard to defend their sacrifices and redirect him to commanding the ship. During the ensuing battle, Pex orders a dangerous turn to bring the undamaged broadside into action; its close-range salvo destroys roughly a fifth of the pursuing Ork vessel’s structure 8 13.
With Japhard away defending the bridge approaches, Pex escalates to a planned head-on ram after three Macro-cannon salvos. The order alarms his crew and increases the urgency of Cheng Mingrui’s attempt to seize the bridge 14.
Arrival in Euronia
After the Orks capture the cruiser, Pex reaches the Euronia System aboard an escape craft with other survivors. He invokes his naval office and Lampaster ancestry to obtain Governor Conwater’s assistance. Conwater agrees, while privately hoping to acquire the damaged cruiser 22 23.
Pex objects to the station’s security examination and insists on collecting his own blood and other samples. The tests identify him as an uninfected human. He subsequently warns that Genestealers have infiltrated the station, helping Conwater seal it and organize stricter screening. He also recommends destroying the Glory Knight rather than allowing its xenos passengers to reach Euronia III 24 25.
The Departmento Munitorum appoints him supreme commander of the Euronia System, conditional on faithful service excusing his responsibility for the cruiser’s loss. The assignment provides little immediate support and requires him to organize defenses from local resources 32.
By this point, Pex’s private thoughts reveal his Tyranid allegiance: he intends to expand a cult, establish a psychic beacon for the Hive Mind, and eliminate the Orks for the Great Devourer. Governor Cornwall introduces him to Trivis at his appointment celebration, giving Pex a politically useful connection 32.
Expedition to Euronia IV
Pex repeatedly clashes with local officials over the delayed anti-Ork expedition. He demands a million troops and dismisses an adjutant who explains that Euronia III cannot supply them. Eventually, he uses his prospective marriage to Trivis to secure Cornwall’s approval for an expedition of 300,000 soldiers, supported by the system fleet 37 39.
The landing at Pioneer Base fails catastrophically. Faced with a much larger and better-equipped Ork army than expected, Pex orders reinforcements and demands that the defenders hold for an hour regardless of casualties. He ultimately authorizes an indiscriminate orbital bombardment that kills humans and Orks alike; the first landing costs the Expeditionary Force nearly a third of its fighting strength 43 45 46.
While tending wounded soldiers aboard the Guardian, Pex survives an assassination attempt by Rambo’s Kommandos. His reflexes and psychic attack prevent Rambo from beheading him, while grateful soldiers shield him from subsequent gunfire. Pex is wounded, and the attackers escape after planting bombs that devastate the docking bay 46.
Pex orders a week-long search using Kasrkin squads and Servo-skulls. Although he recognizes that the expedition has failed, he initially cannot bring himself to withdraw 47.
The Mouse Trap Campaign
Pex develops the Mouse Trap tactic: an armored bait force draws Orks into a prepared position where orbital weapons can destroy them. Its first trial uses 2,000 soldiers and 50 Leman Russ tanks in a fortified valley, costing 300 human casualties while killing thousands of Orks and destroying hundreds of vehicles 51.
Repeated operations improve human morale, but Pex conceals that Ork reproduction outpaces the reported losses. His medical work also becomes a means of covertly infecting soldiers and expanding the Cult 52.
When the Orks unexpectedly stop attacking, he rejects a staff officer’s proposal for a major offensive. A coordinated underground ambush subsequently destroys the human position, convincing him that the enemy’s tactics have changed. The Hive Mind’s guidance recommends withdrawal when such changes cannot be explained 53.
Stone Ridge and the Four-Armed Emperor Church
The arrival of Commissar Kester’s fleet threatens both Pex’s freedom of action and his concealed identity. Kester finds his service record impressive but remains suspicious, despite examinations revealing no abnormalities 69 70 85.
Pex wins approval to lead his Expeditionary Force behind Ork lines on Euronia III. His plan combines refugee rescue, recruitment, a defensible southern base, and a diversion that would allow Kester to strike the Orks’ flank or bombard their boss. He explicitly permits bombardment of his own position if it would kill the enemy leader 85 86.
His base at Stone Ridge grows into a refuge for millions. Civilians undergo quarantine, sterilization, screening, and training. Pex rejects claims that he is an angel, instead encouraging refugees to rely on ordinary people and inviting them to church 97 98.
Within the church, he teaches that commoners are not inherently inferior to nobles and that united ordinary people can defend themselves. He claims divine revelation and describes an incarnation of the Emperor dedicated to empowering them. Food and shelter reinforce his appeal, while his officers address him privately as Patriarch 98 99.
Nuclear Strike and Exposure
When Ghazghkull—Iron Claw’s human-assigned designation—attacks through the tunnels beneath Stone Ridge, Pex sacrifices an elite Gitz squad to hold him in place for a tactical nuclear strike. He reports the apparent success to Kester but conceals the squad’s role. Iron Claw survives, although his disappearance temporarily disrupts Ork command 101 111 113.
Pex supports Kester’s subsequent offensive with limited counterattacks, concentrating on refugee recovery and preserving his own forces for the Hive Fleet’s arrival rather than pursuing outright victory 112 113.
Kester eventually recognizes a pattern: Pex’s troops remain unusually healthy, disciplined, and steadfast, while planted observers suffer conspicuous losses. An investigation at Glory Bastion exposes xenos contamination around Trivis. Kester kills her and her newborn, then orders Pex’s forces isolated at Stone Ridge, with supplies and personnel movement cut off 98 131 132.
Escape from Euronia
Pex is shaken when intelligence copied from his own memories contributes to severe Tyranid losses against the unexpectedly powerful Orks. A calm female electronic voice tells him that unforeseen Ork evolution, rather than deliberate deception, caused the failure 152.
Renewing his conviction in the Four-Armed Emperor, he resolves to capture the equatorial spaceport so his fellow believers can escape. His Genestealer army later reaches Capello through tunnels, where church members receive him and his followers 153 162.
Vigilus and Later Leadership
Pex survives Euronia and reappears on Vigilus, surprising Cornwall, who believed him dead. He detects Cornwall’s concealed pursuit and identifies him through psychic perception of his soul despite his altered appearance 287.
Cornwall offers him worlds, protection from psychic pursuit, and freedom to preach in exchange for changing allegiance. Pex prevents his hidden brood from attacking but refuses to serve an unknown master. He agrees only to transactions, preserving his independence 287.
By the Second Vigilus Crisis, he is addressed as Prelate Pex. An intelligence report and Mathieu’s attitude convince him that his final effort at peace has failed. He concludes that his community’s right to survive must be won through struggle rather than depend on Imperial mercy 323.
Appearance
- Imperial officer’s uniform: Wears it when requesting assistance after escaping the Glory Knight, arriving covered in blood and filth 22.
- Facial injury: Rambo’s sword strikes the deck beside his neck, leaving a severe facial wound that later requires stitching 46 47.
- Outwardly healthy: Kester’s examinations find no illness or detectable abnormality; his physical condition appears better than that of people who have recently received life-extension treatment 85.
Personality
Pex’s early command style is proud, impatient, and authoritarian. He unfairly condemns soldiers aboard the Glory Knight and later dismisses a local adjutant for challenging impossible recruitment demands. He nevertheless learns to compromise when securing Cornwall’s approval requires negotiation rather than orders 8 37 39.
His controlled public manner contrasts with ruthless priorities. He personally treats wounded soldiers, hears refugees’ objections patiently, and presents himself as a devoted servant of the Emperor. Those actions also build trust, recruit believers, and conceal his service to the Tyranid swarm 46 52 99.
Pex is neither uniformly reckless nor uniformly cautious. He sacrifices troops in bombardments and nuclear strikes, but rejects offensives based on unexplained enemy inactivity. His concern for survival initially centers on completing the Hive Mind’s task; later, it extends to preserving his church and refusing blind allegiance to Cornwall’s patron 45 47 53 111 153 287.
As prelate, he is normally mild-tempered and approachable. His anger is consequently striking: after the failure of his peace effort, even his bishops are afraid to speak 323.
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Power
Pex uses psychic force and perception in combat and against concealed opponents.
- Blasts the invisible Rambo into view and knocks him back with compressed psychic power 46.
- Detects Cornwall despite magical concealment 287.
- Recognizes Cornwall by his soul’s unique fluctuations rather than his disguised face 287.
Reflexes and Combat Awareness
- Senses imminent danger immediately before the Kommando ambush 46.
- Moves his neck aside at the last moment to evade Rambo’s beheading strike 46.
- Survives the attack with injuries; his abilities do not prevent the deaths of most of his Kasrkin escorts 46.
Military Strategy
Pex specializes in combining ground operations with superior orbital firepower.
- Naval maneuvering: Brings the Glory Knight’s surviving broadside into action through a dangerous turn 13.
- Mouse Trap: Uses armored bait, prepared terrain, and orbital bombardment against charging Orks 51.
- Leadership targeting: Plans to exploit the Orks’ dependence on their boss through decapitation strikes 85 111.
- Long-term assessment: Recognizes that spores and rapid reproduction make prolonged attrition favorable to the Orks 52 113.
- Operational limits: His expedition repeatedly underestimates Ork growth, equipment, and tactical adaptation 43 53.
Cult Recruitment and Gene-Virus Infiltration
Pex turns military care and refugee relief into channels for expanding his Cult.
- Uses medical treatment to covertly infect and recruit soldiers 52.
- Employs a new-generation Tyranid gene virus whose slow mutations preserve an outwardly normal appearance; infected people can accelerate changes when greater strength is needed 52.
- Reframes Emperor worship around equality, collective strength, and supposed divine revelation 99.
- Uses food, shelter, and personal attention to make his teachings attractive to displaced civilians 97 99.
- Orders subordinates to avoid conspicuous killings of Kester’s observers, recognizing that secrecy is essential while the Cult remains weak 98.
Medical Care
- Performs basic nursing, bandaging, bleeding control, and injections among wounded soldiers 46.
- Gains enough gratitude that soldiers physically shield him during Rambo’s attack 46.
