| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Level two | 254 | Already described as extremely high. Under this field, an ordinary Choppa Boy can kill fifty Hormagaunts. |
| Level five | 254 | Sneaky Boss’s answering roar raises the field directly from level two to level five. At this strength, it can alter physical laws on a massive scale; making oceans float into the sky is given as an example of its potential. |
Meaning and Usage
- Battle cry: Shouting “Waaagh!” expresses and spreads the joy of combat. Hearing it immediately infects the newly transformed Cheng Mingrui with unfamiliar happiness, fanaticism, and the urge to fight 1.
- Psychic field: The Waaagh! is a real soul field, not merely a shout or a metaphor for morale. Orks draw their psychic power from it rather than directly from the Warp 5.
- Campaign: A Waaagh! can mean an organized war or expedition. Bosses gather followers, equipment, and transport before launching one 114 116 158.
- Personal ambition: Every Ork can have a different Waaagh! in mind—from finding satisfying opponents to uniting the entire species 158.
- Praise: Greenskins also use “Waaagh!” descriptively, calling an impressive Boss, machine, or battle especially “Waaagh!” 169 276 440.
Background / History
Cheng Mingrui identifies the Waaagh! Field as an engineered creation of the Old Ones: controllable psychic power capable of existing independently of the Warp. He considers it more stable than the Warp and potentially capable of reaching a higher ceiling. His explanation that the Old Ones anticipated the Warp’s instability and embedded this alternative into Ork genes is presented as his suspicion 58.
The ancestral Krork already used the field to create weapons. The Void Dragon Shard remembers a Krork legion destroying machinery he had turned against them, fashioning weapons from Waaagh! energy, and wounding his manifestation long enough for the Old Ones’ reinforcements to arrive 317.
Field Mechanics
Numbers, Emotion, and Feedback
- Population increases strength: More Orks produce a stronger field, especially when they are excited together 5 58.
- Emotion determines intensity: Battle lust, confidence, and admiration strengthen the field’s ability to affect reality 58 59.
- Strength reinforces enthusiasm: A Boss’s spectacular victory excites his followers; their answering cries then empower both the Boss and the wider force 59 62.
- Growth is collective: Strong fields make even basic Boyz larger and stronger. During the Necron tomb battle, Cheng’s surviving Choppa Boyz develop into Nobz 58 59.
- Spores benefit as well: An active field accelerates Ork spores taking root in blood-soaked soil 83.
Emotional Anchors and Leadership
- The field needs an anchor: Its strongest leader serves as the emotional focal point rather than merely issuing military orders 58 59.
- Its hierarchy is crude: The connection is described through three tiers—Warlord, Warboss, and Boyz—making it particularly vulnerable to failure at the top 58.
- Confidence spreads downward: A fearless Boss can pull his followers into increasingly powerful battle fervor 59.
- Fear spreads the same way: A Boss’s panic, retreat, or humiliating death can transmit defeat throughout the force and collapse the field almost instantly. The existence of a second-strongest Boss does not necessarily prevent this 58 59.
- Recognition matters: Cheng cannot fully access Euronia III’s field while its Orks still recognize Iron Claw as their strongest leader. Broadcasting his effortless defeat of Iron Claw removes the obstruction 168 169.
- Followers influence their Boss too: Kundra is swept up by his troops’ excitement over the Octaria broadcasts and realizes they may replace him if he cannot provide a worthy Waaagh! 276.
Shared Knowledge
- Collective learning: Connected Orks unconsciously share experience and knowledge, becoming more orderly, intelligent, and creative as their gathering grows 58.
- Combat instruction: Grom receives Sneaky Boss’s weapon-forming knowledge and some of his fighting techniques through the field 316.
- Technical inspiration: During the Commorragh battle, Sneaky Boss’s blessings inspire Mekboys to devise stronger upgrades while improving the effectiveness of Rambo’s Kommandos 440.
Abilities & Skills
Physical and Weapon Enhancement
Waaagh! energy can cover Greenskins and their weapons, increasing strength, toughness, speed, and cutting power 57 83.
- Ordinary Choppas become capable of damaging Necron living metal; a stronger surge lets Cheng’s followers dismantle Canoptek Spyders that had previously overwhelmed them 58 59.
- An extreme example cited by the narration is a frenzied Ork Boy piercing Terminator Armour with a wooden stick 57.
- Iron Claw’s heightened field lets nearby Boyz continue charging through concentrated Lasgun fire that previously would have dropped them 83.
- During Cheng’s fight with Angron, the Boyz’ enthusiasm pours energy into him, enlarging and strengthening him. Excess energy from his next strike shatters armour across half of Angron’s upper body 231.
- Copperhead draws on both experience and power within the field to contend with Jaghatai Khan after the Primarch awakens his Warp essence 384.
Psychic Spells and Energy Constructs
Gifted Orks, especially Weirdboys, can channel the field into psychic effects. Their spellcasting is governed by belief rather than a necessary set of tools or rituals 5 354.
- Green lightning: Psyker Boyz discharge Waaagh! energy as destructive lightning 83.
- Missile redirection: Kuka uses the energy to send incoming human missiles back into their own line 6.
- Gork’s Fist and Gork’s Big Foot: These spells manifest enormous punching or stomping attacks. Their strength depends on the caster, nearby Ork numbers, and the intensity of the Waaagh!; Gork’s Fist ranges from destroying a Leman Russ tank to punching through a warship 49.
- Energy weapons: Grom replaces his severed hammer with a green Waaagh!-formed weapon and defeats the Emperor’s Champion 316.
- Ritual dependence through belief: Masks, staffs, and dances are not intrinsically required, but Weirdboys who believe they need a complete ritual perform one 354.
Communication, Perception, and Recruitment
The field connects Greenskins across battlefields and can support planetary or wider communication 155 169 317.
- Kuka links Cheng to Euronia IV’s entire field, giving him a planet-wide view of the remaining Tyranid forces 155.
- Once accepted as Euronia III’s strongest Boss, Cheng receives what the Greenskins see and directs them toward the Tyranids 169.
- Cheng uses the connection to ask the Orks for ideas on eliminating Tyranids hiding beneath the oceans 176.
- Powerful battle fervor instinctively draws distant Greenskins toward the fighting, including forces otherwise occupied with looting 60 71 83.
- Kuka’s psychic broadcasts, amplified by monitors and planetary holograms, spread enthusiasm for Sneaky Boss’s campaign across Kundra’s worlds 276.
- Weirdboys spread Ghazghkull’s victory on Ullanor through the field, potentially attracting followers from surrounding sectors 286.
Reality-Warping and Fleet Protection
At high intensity, the field’s effects extend beyond individual fighters to entire fleets and supernatural environments 219 269.
- A gigantic Ork face and green shock wave overwhelm massed Necron gauss fire in the tomb complex 59.
- Green threads link Sneaky Boss’s five-thousand-ship fleet during Warp travel. The surrounding field disperses most of a violent Warp surge 219.
- The fleet’s energy breaks apart disruptive currents Cheng identifies with Khorne, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch. Some smaller remnants still enter the protected formation 220.
- Gork’s Super Big Face combines the energy surrounding fifty thousand warships into a tangible fleet-scale manifestation. It punches through a formation of 150,000 Tyranid ships and blocks the acid released by destroyed bio-ships 269.
- In a Warp-transformed daemon realm, Cheng judges that the Waaagh! will eventually overpower the local Warp effects as more Orks arrive 171.
- The Webway initially suppresses the field. Little Sneaky later suspects that the presence of quadrillions of Orks explains why it has begun growing stronger there 400.
Remote Empowerment and Divine Power
Sneaky Boss can strengthen recognized followers through the field without fighting beside them 317.
- Duncehead and his surviving Bosses receive energy and confidence from Sneaky Boss, allowing their belief to overcome the Void Dragon Shard’s attacks. The Shard recognizes a trace of divinity in the Orks that lets them harm a being far above their natural strength 317.
- After Duncehead destroys the Shard, Sneaky Boss absorbs its mechanical authority while its deeper source power passes through the field to strengthen Gork and Mork 319.
- Sneaky Boss empowers Copperhead to break his stalemate with Daemon Calamity and kill the Keeper of Secrets 439.
- Mass blessings transfer combat experience alongside energy, strengthening selected Bosses and intensifying the field throughout Warp-torn Commorragh 440.
- The field also supports Sneaky Boss’s recovery after his damaging attack against the Great Devourer 306.
Limitations
- Insufficient intensity: Fearlessness does not guarantee victory. Before the field strengthens, the Boyz’ Choppas cannot meaningfully overcome the Canoptek Spyders’ armour, and their pincers slaughter the attackers 58.
- Psychic overload: Although the early explanation describes practically no side effects, uncontrolled surges can make untalented Psyker Boyz’ heads explode. Even Kuka could fatally mishandle the energy required for Gork’s Super Big Face 5 83 269.
- Information overload: Planet-wide thoughts, images, and requests overwhelm Cheng’s processing capacity, forcing him to cut off the incoming data 169.
- Limited attention: Kuka cannot divide his thoughts indefinitely, restricting how many Orks he can directly connect to during a broadcast 276.
- Incomplete obedience: Shared fervor does not create unquestioning discipline. Newly arrived clans refuse Sneaky Boss’s attempt to withdraw and regroup because they want to keep fighting 293.
- External resistance: Warp energy can disrupt the field, and connecting to it during Warp travel causes Cheng a sharp headache as the surrounding energies wear against one another 171 220.
- Not universal invulnerability: The Great Devourer explicitly distinguishes the field’s limited defensive distortion from Khorne’s separate conceptual blessing against ranged attacks 308.
- Dangerous channeling: Using his own body to emit Waaagh!-powered energy through the ruined Dimensional Rumble Cannon severely burns Cheng and bursts his heart 203.
Cultural Role
- Combat as happiness: Cheng experiences Waaagh! as overwhelming exhilaration. When the enemies are gone and the energy recedes, his ordinary thoughts return 1 2.
- Construction supports campaigning: Crooked Mouth willingly remains behind to build workshops, weapons, and ships because these are indispensable foundations of a successful Waaagh! 293.
- Reputation recruits followers: Sneaky Boss sends missionaries to spread the idea that he offers the largest and most satisfying battles, avoiding the need to personally defeat every Ork tribe 264.
- Greater wars redirect rivalry: Footage of the Octaria campaign persuades Grem and Goldtooth to suspend their own conflict and join Sneaky Boss’s Great Waaagh! 277.
- Work determines participation: The Screw Clan’s work-point system governs expedition eligibility. In the epilogue, Ork Empire fleets still recruit according to work-point totals 158 489.
- Fighting spirit survives lost identity: Calamity Devourer consumes Sneaky Boss’s memories and consciousness but cannot consume his Waaagh! spirit. Its attempt instead shakes its own divine authority 477.
