Background / History
Corporate inheritance and Mind Crush
Kaiba and Mokuba were adopted by Gozaburo. Mokuba remembers Seto as kinder before the adoption, while Tie Zhu later reveals that Gozaburo intended to possess Seto’s body rather than simply pass on his assets 135 160.
After inheriting Kaiba Corporation, Kaiba returns to school seeking an additional Blue-Eyes White Dragon. He offers Tie Zhu more than a hundred rare cards, then insults him when ignored. Tie Zhu responds with killing intent strong enough to frighten him into retreat 133.
Kaiba subsequently loses to Yugi’s completed Exodia. Yugi uses Mind Crush to remove the malice consuming him, and Tie Zhu supplies energy to aid his recovery, explaining that he needs three days of sleep. While Kaiba is unconscious, Tie Zhu orders the company transferred into his own name and preserves its hologram and Duel Disk development projects 135 137.
Duelist Kingdom and recruitment
Kaiba arrives at Duelist Kingdom by helicopter and accuses Tie Zhu of taking his company and manipulating Mokuba. He initially refuses Yugi’s challenge because Yugi no longer has Exodia, then faces Joey as a preliminary opponent before challenging Tie Zhu 158.
Following Kaiba’s defeat, Tie Zhu offers him technology, supernatural power, and opportunities beyond his own world. Kaiba refuses to submit to an enemy and dismisses the warning about Gozaburo’s surviving consciousness. Demonstrations of elemental techniques and Wood Release force him to reconsider his disbelief, although he insists on investigating matters personally 162 163.
Egypt and acceptance of the Empire
In Egypt, Kaiba experiences visions linking him to Priest Seto and Kisara. Tie Zhu identifies Seto as his past incarnation and explains that Kisara became the soul of Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Kaiba initially calls the visions illusions, but the Millennium Rod’s reaction and his familiarity with the dragons undermine his certainty 169 170.
Tie Zhu offers a God Card in exchange for both brothers’ loyalty, performance requirements, and missions, while promising not to control their personal lives. Kaiba accepts Obelisk without speaking an oath, tacitly agreeing to the arrangement. The possibility of winning Marik’s other God Cards also attracts him 174 175.
His independence continues to cause friction. When he refuses interference in his family affairs, Tobirama forcibly demonstrates that Empire membership carries obligations. Tie Zhu intervenes to limit the intimidation and gives the group copies of the Empire’s laws 181.
The investigation into the Virtual World establishes that Noah survived his death as code in a military AI, while Gozaburo uploaded his own consciousness and watched Seto from inside the system 186.
Battle City
Kaiba opens Battle City in Domino City and later stages its top-six rounds aboard an airship, with the semifinals and final at Kaiba Tower. After his own elimination, he remains involved in tournament security, ordering surveillance and deck analysis when his staff discovers a secret Shadow Game between Dark Marik and Bakura, who is hosting the original Marik 194 206 207.
Anubis’s possession
Seeking a newly excavated card, Kaiba defeats Pegasus and approaches its display case. Blue-Eyes warns him from within his Mindscape, and Pegasus detects dangerous energy, but Kaiba accidentally touches the card during their confrontation 210.
Black mist spreads through his body and allows a being calling itself the King of Light to seize control. Mokuba’s voice briefly reaches Kaiba, but the entity suppresses him again, takes the crystal pyramid, and tears out Pegasus’s Millennium Eye. It later escapes imperial forces and confronts Yugi while using Kaiba’s body and memories 211 212 213 214.
Tie Zhu identifies the possessor as Anubis. A month later, Kaiba has regained control and passes examinations by Shinnō, Tie Zhu, and light-aligned spirits. Rather than suffering permanent injury, he emerges physically healthier and immediately renews his ambitions for Domino City and his rivalry with Yugi 213 214 221.
Supernatural conflicts and public leadership
Kaiba opposes Diva’s attempt to impose a “Path of Purification” on humanity. Mokuba and Noah activate his transcendent duel system, sinking surrounding buildings underground to clear an arena 222.
During the conflict with Zorc, Kaiba finally understands his connection to Seto and Kisara. He joins Yugi and the others in attacking Zorc, but their combined strength is insufficient 237.
Six months after the Light of Creation God’s defeat, Kaiba hands the presidency of Kaiba Corporation to Mokuba and becomes mayor of Duel City. He prioritizes research, improved administration, anti-corruption measures, and Duel Monsters events, including sending cards into space for study 246.
At Duel Academy, he resists the Light of Ruin with protection from his Blue-Eyes White Dragons. During the later Spirit World crisis, he uses both technological equipment and a manifested dragon in direct combat, and eventually withdraws exhausted after forcing a draw against Yubel 391 400 406.
The Card Revolution proposal
After returning to Domino City, Kaiba worries that his world cannot keep pace with the supernatural power, technology, and military strength of other worlds. He suspends most company research while retaining the spatial-teleportation project and requests reports on disappearances and memory-related incidents 472.
Mokuba proposes a Card Revolution: convert things into cards through technology, strengthen human mental power to give Duel Monsters physical form, and potentially merge their world with the Spirit World. Kaiba enthusiastically embraces the concept as a possible route to a new era; it remains a proposal at this point 472.
Appearance
- Early appearance: Short green hair and a white suit when returning to school 133.
- Changed hairstyle: Tie Zhu remarks that both his hairstyle and hair color have changed when he arrives at Duelist Kingdom; the new color is not specified 158.
- Later attire: Continues wearing a conspicuous white suit at Duel Academy 390.
- During possession: Anubis surrounds his body with black mist, distorts his voice, and wears the crystal Pyramid of Light through him 211 213.
Personality
Kaiba is proud, competitive, and openly contemptuous of opponents he considers weak. He dismisses friendship as a refuge for weaklings, repeatedly belittles Joey, and treats Blue-Eyes White Dragon as uniquely his own. His desire for “ultimate power” makes God Cards especially tempting 133 158 163 175.
His pride does not prevent him from recognizing a legitimate defeat. After losing to Tie Zhu, he identifies impatience and carelessness as his mistakes and initially leaves without excuses. He nevertheless reacts strongly to provocation and resists accepting help or submitting to authority 161 162 181.
Mokuba is the clearest exception to his cold manner. Kaiba’s laughter briefly reminds Mokuba of his former warmth, and a remark suggesting he would not care about his brother’s death immediately enrages him. Later, he listens seriously to Mokuba’s ideas, encourages him to speak freely, and enthusiastically praises the Card Revolution proposal 160 398 472.
His early faith in mechanical explanations gradually becomes an interest in combining technology with mysticism. By his mayoral period, research and public development have become major priorities alongside dueling 170 246 472.
