Appearance
- Pink hair: Distinctive enough for Nobara and Megumi to recognize him from a distance 32.
- Customized uniform: His uniform has a red hood, added at Gojo’s initiative 9.
- Manifestations of Sukuna: During possession, additional eyes appear on his body. Sukuna can also manifest a mouth on Yuji’s face while Yuji remains conscious 3 36.
Personality
Yuji is welcoming and attentive to others. He helps Takechi straighten up after her exaggerated introductory bow, lends Edano his jacket during the nighttime lesson at the lake, and volunteers to carry groceries for Nagi Yoshino 8 17 32. His humor also helps people relax: at the Yoshinos’ dinner, his stories and theatrical impressions make Junpei laugh until he cries 33.
His compassion extends beyond people he knows. Tadashi’s mother’s distress strengthens his determination to rescue the detention center’s inmates, and he later wants to return Tadashi’s body so she can accept her son’s death. Megumi challenges that impulse by revealing Tadashi’s fatal unlicensed-driving incident and asking whether saving someone who might harm others is always right 11 12.
Yuji is reluctant to kill even an evil sorcerer, fearing that doing so could make him value life less. He remains distressed by Mahito’s transfigured victims even after Shoko confirms that their transformations—not his attacks—caused their deaths 29 34.
Although normally upbeat, he admits feeling weak and fears losing the ability to choose his own fate. He responds by resolving to become stronger, and later insists on continuing his fight with Todo after Edano rescues him 27 49. His enthusiasm also makes him susceptible to Gojo’s schemes, particularly the promised sightseeing trip and elaborate Goodwill Event entrance 9 10 47 48.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Ability and Close Combat
Yuji possesses exceptional natural athleticism, with the narrator citing his ability to run fifty meters in three seconds 6.
- Uses explosive punches, jumping knee strikes, blocks, and evasive rolls in combat 26 49.
- Gets back up after Todo repeatedly punches his head and sends him crashing into a tree 49.
- Trains with Gojo and Maki, but is still knocked down during their sessions 20 26.
- Can become distracted by explanations or impressive techniques during battle, leaving himself open to attacks 28.
Sukuna Vessel and Suppression
Yuji can contain Sukuna after ingesting his finger and regain control of their shared body 3 4.
- Successfully returns to himself after Sukuna’s ten-second confrontation with Gojo 4.
- Continues hearing Sukuna’s voice after taking back control 4.
- Is warned not to release Sukuna near civilians, since Sukuna could kill nearby people along with the curses 10.
- Cannot compel Sukuna to help: Sukuna refuses his desperate request to heal Junpei 36.
Divergent Fist
Divergent Fist results from the mismatch between Yuji’s explosive physical strength and the slower movement of his cursed energy. The punch lands first, followed by a second cursed-energy impact 26.
- Produces two impacts from a single strike 26.
- Initially arises from irregular cursed-energy flow rather than deliberate timing 26.
- Gojo identifies it as a potential major weapon and immediately puts Yuji through practice 26.
Jujutsu Fundamentals
Yuji begins with little understanding of jujutsu and requires a cursed tool for his first field test 10.
- Learns to identify cursed residue at the movie theater under Nanami’s supervision 27.
- Raises a Curtain during the confrontation with Junpei’s teacher, Tomura 30.
- Receives a practical lesson on Domain Expansion while observing Gojo fight Jogo; the encounter teaches him about domains, but does not show him acquiring one 17 18.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Slaughter Demon — Cursed-energy-infused weapon Gojo lends him for the abandoned-building field test. Before the Goodwill Event, Maki confronts Yuji over what he did with the tool; the supplied passage does not specify its fate 10 45.
- Mobile phone — Used to contact Ijichi during the Junpei investigation and coordinate the visit to the Yoshinos’ home 31 32.
Relationships
- Taketori Edano / Takechi — Classmate, training partner, and protective friend. She keeps Sukuna from becoming involved at the detention center, rescues Yuji from Hanami and Kyoto’s attacks, and shields him from watching Junpei’s destruction 13 18 36 49.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Classmate who asks Gojo to save Yuji despite the execution regulations. They later clash over the moral limits of rescuing people, but Megumi remains concerned for his safety 4 12 32.
- Nobara Kugisaki — Fellow first-year and field-test partner. They successfully exorcise a curse and help a child return home, while their everyday exchanges include arguments over food and shopping duties 10 16.
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher and protector. Supports Megumi’s request to spare Yuji, teaches him jujutsu, identifies Divergent Fist, and arranges his unsuccessful surprise entrance at the Goodwill Event 4 17 26 47 48.
- Kento Nanami — Mission mentor whom Yuji calls “Nanamin.” Sets practical standards, initially withholds recognition of Yuji as a sorcerer, and takes the dangerous investigation himself rather than expose Yuji to it 27 29.
- Junpei Yoshino — Friend encountered during the movie-theater investigation. They bond over films and discuss the morality of killing; Yuji desperately asks Sukuna to save him after Mahito transforms him 31 34 36.
- Nagi Yoshino — Junpei’s mother, who welcomes Yuji to dinner and delights in his stories and performances 31 32 33.
- Ryomen Sukuna — Hostile occupant of Yuji’s body. Yuji can suppress him, but Sukuna mocks his plea to save Junpei 3 4 36.
- Aoi Todo — Goodwill Event opponent who declares Yuji his best friend after hearing his preferred type of woman. Refuses Kamo’s order to kill him 49.
- Yoshinobu Gakuganji — Kyoto principal who orders Yuji’s assassination disguised as a competition accident 48.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Becoming Sukuna’s Vessel
Yuji’s ingestion of Sukuna’s Finger is a fixed event that Takechi’s system says cannot be prevented without collapsing the world. After Sukuna emerges, Takechi immobilizes him and Yuji reclaims his body. Megumi initially declares that Yuji must be exorcised, but later asks Gojo to find a way to let him live 3 4.
At Jujutsu High, Yuji joins Megumi, Takechi, and Nobara as one of the four first-years. His first field test pairs him with Nobara at an abandoned building, where they exorcise a curse and help a child return home 8 9 10.
Juvenile Detention Center
In July 2018, the first-years are sent to Eishu Juvenile Detention Center to locate survivors threatened by a cursed womb. Yuji’s desire to help Tadashi’s mother leads into his disagreement with Megumi over recovering her son’s body 11 12.
When the special-grade spirit attacks, Takechi stays behind and orders Megumi to evacuate Yuji and recover Nobara. Yuji protests abandoning her, but Megumi drags him away. Takechi’s intervention completes her system mission to prevent Yuji and Sukuna from establishing a binding vow 13.
Training and the Movie-Theater Investigation
After witnessing Gojo’s battle with Jogo and Hanami’s escape, Yuji receives an accelerated training schedule intended to prepare him for stronger enemies and the Goodwill Event 17 18. Gojo later identifies Divergent Fist, while Nanami teaches him investigative fundamentals 26 27.
The movie-theater investigation exposes Yuji to Mahito’s transfigured humans. Shoko confirms that the victims died from their modifications before the sorcerers fought them, but Yuji remains troubled by their deaths 28 29.
Junpei Yoshino’s Tragedy
Assigned to investigate Junpei, Yuji instead develops a genuine friendship with him. Their shared interest in movies leads to dinner with Nagi and the other first-years, followed by a private conversation about killing and the value of life 29 31 32 33 34.
At Rikō High, Yuji witnesses Mahito transform Junpei and offers Sukuna anything in exchange for healing him. Sukuna refuses. Edano steps in front of Yuji, blocks his view, and destroys Junpei’s transformed body while her system preserves his soul as a Soul Seed 36.
Sister-School Goodwill Event
Yuji follows Gojo’s plan to emerge from a box, only to find the Kyoto students distracted by their souvenirs. Behind the event’s prohibition on killing, Gakuganji secretly orders Kyoto’s students to murder him 47 48.
Yuji occupies Todo so his teammates can pursue their objectives. After Todo’s friendship declaration, the other Kyoto students attack, prompting Edano to teleport Yuji to safety. Todo rejects Kamo’s execution order, and Yuji asks to resume their fight properly. Edano heals him before and after their bout 49 50.
Notable Quotes
“If I’m not strong enough, I won’t even get to choose how I die.” 27
“Even then, I still don’t want to kill anyone.” 34
“Me too! No matter what you turn into, Edano will still be Edano!” 46
Trivia
- His stated preference for a tall woman with a large butt, “someone like Jennifer Lawrence,” prompts Todo’s immediate declaration of friendship 49.
- Takechi affectionately calls him her “little angel Yuji” 9 17.
- His imitation of Sukuna at the Yoshinos’ dinner includes using a green onion as a prop 33.
- He spreads word among Tokyo’s students that Edano’s threat to make someone eat dog feces is literal, not figurative 47.
