Background / History

Childhood in the Zenin Clan

Toji grew up aspiring to become a powerful jujutsu sorcerer. At ten, he learned that his Heavenly Restriction meant he would never possess cursed energy. The Zenin Clan treated this difference as a disgrace, subjecting him to repeated humiliation and excluding him even from its school. His former room was cramped and cold, reflecting his marginal position within the household 28 30.

At thirteen, clan children tricked him into entering a room containing more than twenty Grade 2 cursed spirits. They promised forgiveness if he endured five minutes, then locked him inside, mocked him, and demanded that he beg. To resist their control, Toji cut his own mouth. The incident left him with enduring shame and reinforced the belief that his existence was wrong 31 32.

Assassin Career and Marriage

Toji became known as the Sorcerer Killer, working with black-market middleman Shiu Kong. Their partnership was based on profit rather than friendship, and Shiu later struggled to replace Toji’s abilities after his retirement 27.

Marriage to Yuanyin and the birth of their children gave Toji a home outside the clan’s oppressive world. After marrying and having a daughter, he stopped using his former cursed tools. Nevertheless, he concealed parts of his past and feared that Yuanyin’s acceptance depended on what she did not know about him 2 3 28.

Appearance

Toji has a heavily muscular build, deep green eyes, and a scar at the corner of his mouth. Yuanli describes a contrast between his raw, untamed presence and his competence during ordinary domestic tasks 21 36 42 44.

  • Green eyes — shared with Yuanli; he gives an unconscious smile when he notices the resemblance shortly after her birth 11.
  • Mouth scar — associated with the self-inflicted injury during his childhood confinement 32 42.
  • Powerful physique — his muscles remain sharply visible beneath a plain white T-shirt 36.

Personality

Toji is taciturn, blunt, and reluctant to explain himself. Even when trying to help Yuanli, he often leaves his intentions unspoken. He finds verbal apologies particularly difficult: during an argument with Yuanyin, he wonders why hugs and kisses cannot convey the same meaning as saying “I’m sorry” 7 11.

His physical strength contrasts with profound emotional vulnerability. Yuanyin’s death leaves him unable to manage funeral responsibilities, and his response to unbearable pain is repeatedly to withdraw or escape. He interprets his childhood abuse and Heavenly Restriction as evidence that he is unworthy of love, sometimes believing his children would be better off without him 2 3 19 28.

Toji’s protectiveness can become violent when Yuanli is threatened. Yet his later development centers on learning to remain present rather than merely defending his family physically. He begins expressing affection, accepting comfort, and maintaining friendships beyond the household 5 38 43 45 50.

He is also a persistent horse-racing gambler. When Yuanyin gave him a monthly allowance, he could lose the entire sum on the first day; repeated losses only intensified his determination to continue 13.

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Restriction

Toji’s Heavenly Restriction leaves him without cursed energy while granting an exceptional physique. Within the Zenin Clan, this became a basis for persecution rather than recognition 29 30.

  • Physical strength — can rapidly overpower ordinary opponents and nearly kills the cemetery employee who abandoned Yuanli 5.
  • Fast recovery from minor injuries — expects a small facial wound to heal quickly 3.
  • Accelerated drug metabolism — metabolizes medication five times faster than normal, causing anesthetics and painkillers to wear off rapidly 40.
  • Limits — remains vulnerable to injury and pain; a bomb tears open his left arm despite his extraordinary body 40.

Combat and Assassination

Toji’s abilities earned him his reputation as the Sorcerer Killer. His fighting relies heavily on his body, though he also carries blades and cursed tools 3 5 19 27.

  • Close-quarters combat — delivers a flying kick before a biker can complete an attempt to steal Yuanli’s backpack 11.
  • Fighting multiple opponents — beats the biker gang members when they resist together 12.
  • Firearms — has some proficiency, but Yuanli considers him less skilled with guns than Yuanyin 5.
  • Emotional control — threats to Yuanli can provoke excessive force, requiring her intervention 5.

Domestic Skills

Toji becomes an increasingly attentive domestic presence as his relationship with the children improves 43 44.

  • Cooking and shopping — selects quality ingredients and prepares beef-bone soup after Yuanli asks for it 44.
  • Practical caregiving — treats Yuanli’s burned hands and later brings food and drinks when seeking out both children in Hawaii 8 41 43.
  • Housing arrangements — proposes moving and searches for properties while Yuanli cares for Megumi 21.

Manga Adaptation

Toji takes on the manga adaptation of Yusaku Kudo’s novel, Islands at the End of the World, despite having no foundation in drawing manga 50.

  • Collaboration — consults Yusaku by phone while Furuya Sō receives photographs of the pages and digitally polishes them 50.
  • Developing skill — works diligently on the project, which also sustains the three men’s friendship 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Inventory Curse Worm — stores and retrieves weapons from its belly; can swallow a blade directly from Toji’s hand 3 12 19.
  • Long blade — retrieved from the worm after Yuanyin’s death; explicitly not a Special Grade Cursed Tool 3.
  • Cleaver — bought and sharpened by Toji, later stored in the worm; associated in his memories with the family’s move and Megumi’s arrival 12.
  • Cursed-tool dagger — carried during his intended confrontation with Officer Morofushi, then concealed by the worm before violence occurs 19.

Relationships

  • Yuanyin — Wife and mother of his children. Her acceptance gives him a sense of home, while her death triggers severe grief and renewed self-loathing 2 3 28.
  • Yuanli — Biological daughter. Initially carries many of his responsibilities, then helps him confront both his grief and the clan’s abuse. Their relationship gradually becomes more openly affectionate 2 8 32 38.
  • Megumi — Biological son. Megumi’s previous-life memories make him distrust Toji, and their hostility persists even after Yuanli persuades him to give the current Toji another chance. An attempt at training together also ends in conflict 15 22 26 50.
  • Shiu Kong — Former professional partner and assassination broker. His account reveals Toji’s retirement and furious reaction to a contract targeting Yuanli 27.
  • Yusaku Kudo — Friend and parenting mentor. Encourages Toji to understand his particular children and express genuine feelings without forcing closeness 42 43 50.
  • Furuya Sō — Friend who directs him toward a parent-child camp and later helps with his manga work 42 45 50.
  • Fushiguro Tomomi — Megumi’s stepmother in the previous timeline. In the current timeline, her fixation on Toji leads to a scheme to trap him; their racecourse conversation causes a serious family misunderstanding 16 36 37 38.
  • Hiromitsu Morofushi — Police officer who helps bring the family to the hospital. Toji considers provoking his own arrest so Morofushi will take responsibility for the children, but Yuanli intervenes 19.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Bereavement and Neglect

After Yuanyin’s death, Toji becomes so incapacitated that eight-year-old Yuanli handles travel, funeral arrangements, and much of Megumi’s care. He cannot face Yuanyin’s body and later misses the appointed time to collect her ashes. Yuanli’s forgiveness finally allows him to accept the urn and break down 2 3.

His avoidance has dangerous consequences when Yuanli undertakes the cemetery journey alone and is abandoned on the mountain. Seeing her bloodied and injured, Toji attacks the responsible employee; Yuanli stops him and negotiates with the police so he can accompany her to the hospital 5.

Recognizing Yuanli’s Distress

Toji attempts to erase reminders of Yuanyin by destroying her belongings. Yuanli burns her hands trying to save a photograph, and her withdrawal forces him to recognize that he has treated her like an adult rather than offered fatherly affection 8.

After discovering dangerous items in Yuanli’s bag, he removes potential hazards from the home. He begins to understand that her apparent composure concealed suffering, although his own suicidal crisis shows that neither has recovered. During Megumi’s hospitalization, Yuanli prevents another attempted separation and explicitly tells Toji that she needs him 12 19.

Disappearance and Reconciliation

Toji disappears for several days, leaving Yuanli uncertain whether he has abandoned the family. Shiu Kong reveals that Toji had reacted furiously upon hearing that an assassination target had been stabbed in the lower back—the injury Yuanli had suffered 24 27.

The children find him in a dark apartment surrounded by liquor bottles, gambling tickets, and cigarette butts. Yuanli’s embrace finally breaks his silence: he reveals that he considers his existence a mistake and blames himself for the suffering he believes his bloodline has brought her 28.

Confronting the Zenin Clan

Yuanli investigates Toji’s childhood and uncovers the “Beast Arena” abuse. Toji arrives hoping to prevent her from hearing the account, then tries to leave out of shame. She stops him, rejects the clan’s accusations, and helps him begin viewing his actions as survival rather than guilt 29 30 31 32.

Punishing his abusers does not immediately resolve his trauma. When Yuanli’s subsequent scheme leads to the estate’s confiscation, Toji searches the deserted compound with both children and breaks into grief and laughter. Yuanli embraces him and welcomes him home as her father 33 35.

Learning Fatherhood in Hawaii

In Hawaii, Toji struggles to connect with children whose independence defeats his imagined family activities. Furuya directs him toward a parent-child camp, where Yusaku Kudo offers an alternative to generic parenting advice: understanding the child in front of him 42.

During a bomb-disposal activity involving mistakenly supplied live explosives, Toji protects Yusaku and injures his arm. Yuanli interprets the rescue as an attempt to preserve a model of fatherhood he admires; Toji’s own perspective emphasizes his desperate wish to hear the rest of Yusaku’s advice 40 43.

He later takes the initiative to find Yuanli and Megumi on the beach, brings refreshments, and admits that he missed them. Their relaxed evening and shared activity plans mark a departure from his habitual withdrawal 41 43.

Life After the Trip

Toji leaves Hawaii with lasting friendships, even awkwardly repeating Yusaku’s farewell hug with Furuya. The family returns to Japan and moves from Kanagawa to Tokyo for Megumi 45.

By Chapter 50, Toji is maintaining those friendships through his manga collaboration. His relationship with Megumi remains strained, but his sustained creative work and social connections show that his life is no longer confined to gambling, isolation, or dependence on the household alone 50.
