Background / History

Origins

Su Bai is a transmigrator with knowledge of the original story and its characters. His parents are dead, and the Nuoding Academy principal recalls his family circumstances as ordinary. Rather than accept a conventional cultivation route, he plans his development around the Spirit Pagoda’s ability to contract soul beasts 1 8.

Nuoding Academy

Yu Xiaogang insists that Su Bai’s pagoda martial soul should follow the support path and eventually assist Tang San. Su Bai refuses and accepts a duel intended to prove Yu Xiaogang’s judgment. Meanwhile, he waits for Tang San and Yu Xiaogang to enter the Soul Hunting Forest, expecting Tang Hao to follow them and leave Ah Yin accessible 1.

After acquiring Ah Yin in her weakened plant form, Su Bai places her in sunlight and offers daily access to it in exchange for a contract. She agrees, becoming his first soul spirit. Her recovering Blue Silver Emperor initially resembles ordinary Blue Silver Grass, concealing the source of his abilities 2.

Su Bai decisively defeats Tang San, then Xiao Wu. A month of daily sparring brings him and Xiao Wu closer, while a second victory over Tang San further damages Yu Xiaogang’s reputation. Su Bai subsequently withdraws from the academy, stating that he has nothing more to learn there 4 5 6 7 8.

Six-Year Journey and Suotuo Reunion

During six years of travel, Su Bai conceals his identity because of his contract with Tang San’s mother. At thirteen, he enters the Soto Great Soul Arena as Faceless, defeating Zhu Zhuqing and Dai Mubai with his unusually powerful Blue Silver Emperor 9 10 11 12.

Xiao Wu recognizes him and follows him after his match. Their reunion leads to another confrontation with Yu Xiaogang and a poisoned-needle ambush by Tang San. Su Bai deflects the needle into Yu Xiaogang, then restrains Tang San and breaks his arm as punishment 12 13 14 15.

At the Rose Hotel, Xiao Wu entrusts Su Bai with her late mother’s comb and asks him not to leave her again. He reveals that he knows she is a transformed soul beast and proposes a contract that grants him her power while making her identity harder to detect. She accepts after confirming that she will retain her freedom to travel 16 17.

Immortal Herbs and the Third Contract

After contracting Xiao Wu, Su Bai travels to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and collects its rare herbs in prepared storage boxes. Dugu Bo pursues him with venom and poisonous mist. Su Bai escapes by combining Teleportation with Incarnation, hiding as Blue Silver Grass until the pursuit ends 19 20.

He consumes the Nine-Rank Immortal Ganoderma before the singular velvet sky chrysanthemum, strengthening his martial soul, body, soul power, and ring ages. Seeking offensive power to complement his existing spirits, he rejects weaker candidates and searches for a Golden Lion Mastiff 21.

After finding one in the Star Dou Great Forest, Su Bai turns its charging momentum against it and uses Soft Bone Rebound to reflect its strength. When it continues resisting negotiation, he overpowers and contracts it. He then tests his enhanced strength against a roughly thirty-thousand-year-old Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear, breaking its arm and driving it away 22 23 24.

Tang Hao and Spirit Hall

Su Bai responds to a troubling message from Xiao Wu and arrives as Tang Hao threatens her outside Shrek Academy. Tang Hao admits that he had kept Xiao Wu near Tang San as a prospective source of a hundred-thousand-year ring and soul bone 24.

Protecting Xiao Wu, Su Bai draws Tang Hao toward a prepared location, evading attacks with Teleportation and briefly resisting a hammer blow with the Blue Silver Emperor and Golden Lion Mastiff. He reveals Ah Yin’s phantom, provoking Tang Hao’s grief and anger while challenging his treatment of her 25 26.

The location is a Spirit Hall encirclement arranged by Su Bai. With his soul power nearly exhausted, he places Xiao Wu inside the pagoda before Yue Guan and Gui Mei intercept Tang Hao’s attack. Qian Daoliu’s arrival forces Tang Hao to flee 26 27.

Su Bai declines Spirit Hall membership but accepts 10,000 Gold Soul Coins and its acknowledgment of his assistance. He conceals the true cause of Tang Hao’s anger to protect Xiao Wu’s identity. Later, he respects her decision to remain in the forest with Er Ming and cultivate until maturity 27.

Fourth Soul Spirit

Remaining near the Star Luo Great Forest, Su Bai searches during the rainy season for a Thunderclap Hellvine to supplement his close-range strength with lightning-based ranged attacks 27.

He encounters Yu Tianheng, Dugu Yan, and Ye Lingling fighting the vine. After warning Yu Tianheng that it is too dangerous, he eventually defeats the beast and secures it for himself. Yu Tianheng acknowledges that Su Bai saved their lives, and the group withdraws 28 29.

The Spirit Pagoda’s pressure forces the wounded vine to submit rather than self-destruct. Its contract painfully tempers Su Bai’s body, raises him to rank 52, and preserves the vine’s consciousness so it can continue cultivating inside the pagoda 29.

Appearance

Su Bai initially has short hair and a faint, composed smile. His body grows rapidly through Ah Yin’s vitality and later soul-spirit contracts 1 6 23.

  • At barely over seven: Reaches 160 centimeters within a month of contracting Ah Yin 6.
  • At thirteen: Stands 175 centimeters tall, with a handsome face and visible muscle contours beneath fitted clothing 9.
  • After the Golden Lion Mastiff contract: Grows to 190 centimeters, with a bulkier, more muscular frame 23.
  • Arena disguise: Wears a black-and-white mask as Faceless 9.
  • Martial-soul manifestations: Develops rabbit ears when using the Soft Bone Rabbit and a golden aura when using the Golden Lion Mastiff 18 23.
  • After the Hellvine contract: Displays dark golden pupils; blue-violet lightning patterns appear across his skin during tempering 29.

Personality

Su Bai is independent and skeptical of authority unsupported by results. He refuses Yu Xiaogang’s prescribed cultivation path, proves his position through combat, and later rejects institutional membership rather than subordinate his plans to others 1 4 8 27.

His confidence is tempered by preparation and caution. He disguises himself during his travels, limits early retaliation against Tang San because of Tang Hao, and arranges Spirit Hall’s intervention before confronting the stronger opponent. His encounter with Dugu Bo also makes him recognize that dismissing a Titled Douluo based on reputation was a dangerous mistake 4 9 15 20 26.

He combines genuine affection with practical self-interest. He values Xiao Wu’s sincerity, protects her identity, and respects her choices, while also deliberately cultivating their closeness to obtain her soul skills. His methods become harsher when resisted: he breaks Tang San’s arm after the ambush and forces contracts on defeated soul beasts 5 15 16 18 23 27 29.

Abilities & Skills

Spirit Pagoda

His true martial soul is a nine-story pagoda that turns contracted soul beasts into soul spirits and allows him to use their powers 17 18.

  • Contract mechanics: A willing beast can produce an effect similar to sacrifice, bypassing theoretical soul-ring absorption limits. Forced contracts are possible, but consent produces better results 2.
  • Growing soul rings: Ring ages can increase with the contractor’s development and the soul spirit’s recovery or cultivation 2 9 29.
  • Martial-soul switching: Su Bai can use his soul spirits as martial souls and switch between them. Their skills change with the active form, and cross-spirit compatibility affects enhancement strength 18.
  • Soul-spirit preservation: Contracted spirits can retain consciousness and continue growing inside the pagoda 29.
  • External freedom: Following its evolution, the pagoda allows soul spirits to move outside it; Xiao Wu retains her ability to travel independently 17.
  • Mental connection and shelter: Su Bai remains mentally connected to Xiao Wu and can bring her into the pagoda for protection 19 24 26.
  • Suppression: The pagoda exerts soul-level pressure strong enough to prevent the wounded Thunderclap Hellvine from resisting 29.

Blue Silver Emperor — Ah Yin

The first soul spirit supplies plant control, recovery, and defensive abilities. Ah Yin’s vitality also strengthens Su Bai’s physique and senses 2 12 27.

  • Growth: Initially increases Blue Silver Emperor growth speed by 100% and permits control of individual plants 2.
  • Soft Bone Growth: After Xiao Wu’s contract, increases growth speed by 200% and toughness by 100% 18.
  • Vitality: Allows seeds to sprout anywhere, including on an opponent’s body or from clothing. Its enhanced form also increases growth speed by 100% 2 5 18.
  • Restraint and regeneration: Vines bind opponents, suppress their plants, and rapidly regrow when torn apart 4 6 12 22.
  • Blue Silver Armor: Produces full-body woven armor that repairs damage through rapid plant growth 11.
  • Incarnation: Transforms his body into the Blue Silver Emperor for two hours. Its vitality allows him to endure Dugu Bo’s poisonous mist while concealed as grass; this is not established as blanket poison immunity 20.

Soft Bone Rabbit — Xiao Wu

The second soul spirit provides mobility and defensive counterattacks while also enhancing the Blue Silver Emperor 18 23 27.

  • Teleportation: Instantly moves Su Bai to a Blue Silver Emperor under his control within fifty meters, compared with Xiao Wu’s original five-meter range 18.
  • Documented usage limit: At the time of his initial testing, he can teleport seven times consecutively before exhausting his available soul power 19.
  • Soft Bone Rebound: Reflects 70% of an attack back at the opponent. An attack that exceeds the skill’s limits by too much can still affect him 23.
  • Compatibility limitation: The Blue Silver Emperor enhances the Soft Bone Rabbit less effectively than the rabbit enhances the plant martial soul 18.

Golden Lion Mastiff

His third soul spirit is a strength-focused beast less than ten thousand years old. Its contract greatly enlarges and strengthens his body 23.

  • Transformation: Covers him in golden light and grants immense physical power 23.
  • Combat feat: Breaks the arm of a roughly thirty-thousand-year-old Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear with one punch 23.
  • Domination Domain: Uses the domain during his attempt to block Tang Hao’s hammer attack 25.
  • Specialization: Most of its skills enhance strength; its limited offensive variety motivates his search for a ranged lightning spirit 27.

Thunderclap Hellvine

His fourth soul spirit is selected for its lightning-based ranged attacks and destructive potential 27 29.

  • Lightning tempering: Its contract tears and reconstructs his meridians while strengthening his body 29.
  • Immediate manifestation: Upon completing the contract, lightning bolts from his eyes smash a nearby boulder 29.
  • Continued growth: The vine remains conscious inside the pagoda, allowing its cultivation and ring age to increase further 29.
  • Unrevealed skills: No named Hellvine soul skill is demonstrated in the provided chapters 29.

Foreknowledge and Combat Tactics

Su Bai uses knowledge of the original story to identify opportunities, anticipate character movements, and select valuable cultivation resources 1 5 9 19.

  • Plans Ah Yin’s acquisition around Tang Hao following Tang San into the Soul Hunting Forest 1.
  • Provokes Dai Mubai into impulsive attacks while maintaining his own composure 11.
  • Exploits the Golden Lion Mastiff’s momentum rather than meeting its charge directly 22 23.
  • Uses Tang Hao’s hostility toward Spirit Hall to arrange outside protection 26.
  • Recognizes the limits of his foreknowledge: the original story does not give the well’s precise location, and simplified portrayals of Dugu Bo mislead him about the danger 19 20.

Relationships

  • Ah Yin — First contracted soul spirit. Su Bai restores access to sunlight and gains her Blue Silver Emperor powers; her recovery also feeds strength back to him 2 9.

  • Tang Hao — Major threat because of Ah Yin’s contract and Xiao Wu’s estrangement from Tang San. Su Bai challenges his treatment of both soul beasts and draws him into a Spirit Hall ambush 7 24 25 26.
  • Zhu Zhuqing — Arena opponent defeated almost immediately. Her frustration develops into curiosity about his unusually strong plant martial soul 9 10.
