History

Earlier Dark Continent expeditions

Netero visited the Dark Continent before joining Odin’s expedition. Enormous Magical Beasts had forced his earlier expedition back, leaving him eager to confront them again once he became stronger 161.

His son, Beyond, also made several journeys there and caused enough trouble that Netero imposed a restriction preventing further expeditions while he remained alive. Although described as a seal on Beyond, its actual bearer was Netero himself 138 146.

Hunter Exam

Netero first appears during the dispute over Menchi’s sushi test, descending from hundreds of meters above the ground without injury. He challenges the test’s objectivity but refuses Menchi’s offer to resign, instead keeping her as examiner and authorizing a replacement test 22.

Aboard the airship, he plays a volleyball game with Gon and Killua and invites Odin to participate. Before the final test, he privately interviews the candidates about their motivations and preferred opponents 24 25 40.

He announces a final tournament in which winners pass and losers advance to another match. After the exam, he rejects Leorio’s request to grant Killua a license, insisting that the results cannot be changed 41 45.

Chimera Ant operation

Netero immediately supports Odin’s proposal to attack the Chimera Ant nest directly. Inside, he clears out the combat soldiers and kills two Squadron Leaders before confronting the Queen 132 133 134.

He initially offers the Queen a choice between fighting and surrendering. When she demands ten thousand humans as food each day, he attacks her with the Bodhisattva. Neferpitou’s newly developed damage-transfer ability complicates the attempt to kill her 135 136.

During his battle with Menthuthuyoupi, Netero becomes more interested in enjoying the fight than preventing Meruem’s birth. He later admits that he wants to face a worthy opponent and die in battle. Odin interprets the unusually small operation as evidence of a possible scheme involving Beyond and Pariston; this remains Odin’s assessment rather than an independently established explanation 136 138.

Odin transports Netero and Meruem to a nearby mountain for their duel. Meruem withstands the Bodhisattva’s strikes, learns their rhythm, and tears off one of Netero’s legs. Netero seals the wound with his muscles and continues fighting 138 139.

When Odin offers him greater strength and future battles on the Dark Continent, Netero accepts. Odin kills Meruem and restores Netero’s lost limbs and injuries with a Breath of Archangel card 140.

Retirement and succession

After returning to headquarters, Netero announces his intention to retire and nominates Odin as his successor despite Odin’s refusal. He proceeds with a Hunter-wide election, reasoning that Odin can be elected before deciding whether to accept the position 141 142.

Netero’s rules require approval from at least 95% of Hunters. The first vote fails that threshold; coordinated support from rival factions gives Odin 629 votes in the second round. Netero then secures his temporary acceptance by promising a reward available after inauguration 144 145.

The reward is a copper coin believed by scholars to originate from an unknown Dark Continent kingdom. Netero also proposes using Beyond’s expedition preparations to solve the transport problem. Odin transfers Netero’s seal to a death-row prisoner, lifting the restriction 146.

Renewed exploration

On the voyage, Netero adopts Odin’s Nen Script Meridian system. Foundation Establishment greatly expands his lifespan and aura reserves, making the Dark Continent less dangerous than on his previous visit. He agrees to establish a foothold and pursue Golden Core before challenging the giant beasts again 151 158 161.

Netero and Ging become leading fighters in encounters with local forces. Netero defeats the God of Light’s avatar, then battles the god himself. His speed and Nen techniques allow him to resist a chief god, but the god’s near-instant explosions and transformation into light eventually require Odin’s intervention 171 175 177 178 179.

He continues cultivating in Elf City, reaches Nascent Soul alongside Ging, and remains eager to spar with Odin even after Odin’s much greater breakthrough. His latest appearance places him in the city’s northern training grounds, still in Nascent Soul but with vastly improved control over his signature ability 191 209 212.

Appearance

Netero initially resembles a kindly elderly grandfather, despite the extraordinary strength demonstrated by his entrance 22.

  • Early appearance: Goatee, loose-fitting clothing, a cheerful smile, and eyes often narrowed to slits. He appears seventy or eighty, though his actual age is later established as over a hundred 22 212.
  • Aboard the airship: Barefoot and still wearing his loose clothes 24.
  • Against Meruem: Removes his coat to reveal a dark short-sleeved shirt and thin, sharply defined muscular arms 139.
  • After prolonged cultivation: His facial wrinkles disappear, leaving a youthful face with snow-white hair 212.

Personality

Netero’s genial manner conceals an intense appetite for challenging battles. He jokes about being old immediately after killing a Chimera Ant and treats his injuries lightly enough to exasperate Beans. His enthusiasm can override mission priorities, as when he prolongs the fight with Youpi despite Odin’s warning about Meruem’s imminent birth 133 136 141.

He values continued improvement more than longevity alone. He already knows ways to extend his life or regain his youth but has not pursued them; Odin changes his mind by offering stronger opponents and a path beyond decline. On the renewed expedition, he also shows enough patience to postpone confronting the giant beasts until he is better prepared 140 161.

As chairman, he combines firm standards with deliberate manipulation. He corrects an unfair exam without dismissing its examiner, refuses to alter finalized results, and later pushes Odin into succession against his wishes. After retiring, he respects Beans’s refusal to disclose the new chairman’s confidential business 22 45 142 147.

Abilities & Skills

100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva

Netero manifests a golden, many-armed Guanyin statue whose movements deliver extraordinarily fast palm strikes 135 139.

  • Rapid barrages: Eliminates more than a hundred Chimera Ant combat soldiers in less than five seconds 133.
  • Defensive interception: Uses multiple arms to block beams, blades, fragments, and other incoming attacks 175 177 178.
  • Adjustable size: Uses smaller manifestations against compact targets rather than always summoning his largest construct 176 177.
  • Construct restoration: Reforms destroyed arms while enlarging the statue during the God of Light battle 178.
  • Late-stage activation: Eventually replaces hand gestures with thought alone 212.
Documented manifestation Size Context
Meruem duel 150 meters Full manifestation at the beginning of the duel 139
After Foundation Establishment Over 1,000 meters Increased Nen reserves enlarge the construct 161
Compact combat form 100 meters Used against the pope and the God of Light 176 177
Enlarged combat form 10,000 meters Strikes the God of Light’s concentrated energy sphere 178
Later Nascent Soul manifestation 1,000,000 meters Can be summoned through a thought 212

Limitations:

  • Meruem can survive its strikes and learn the rhythm of its attacks, eventually finding an opening 139.
  • Powerful attacks can destroy its arms: the avatar’s beam destroys ten, while the God of Light’s feather barrage destroys eighty 175 178.
  • Near-instant explosions leave insufficient time to intercept them, and the God of Light’s light form allows physical counterattacks to pass through him 179.

Physical combat and Nen defense

Netero combines exceptional speed with precise palm strikes and advanced aura control 134 177 179.

  • Lands unharmed after falling hundreds of meters from the sky 22.
  • Kills Squadron Leaders with direct strikes, including a chest blow that sends Gido through two walls 134.
  • Uses muscular control to stop bleeding after losing a leg 139.
  • Maintains Ken and rapidly redistributes aura with Ryu, concentrating protection toward an explosion 179.
  • Uses restrictions and vows, together with refined Nen technique, to contend with chief gods; the specific conditions are not described 179.

Cultivation and perception

Odin’s Meridian system lets Netero cultivate true qi and true essence while retaining Nen as his principal combat system 151 208.

  • His system uses a single meridian channel and moderately sized dantian, emphasizing lifespan extension and stronger Nen 208.
  • Foundation Establishment expands his aura reserves enough to sustain En for long periods and detect danger in advance 158 161.
  • His Meridian design becomes Odin’s model for the species-wide cultivation meme 208.
  • Later cultivation rejuvenates his appearance without changing his snow-white hair 212.

Relationships

  • Odin — Rescuer, cultivation benefactor, expedition companion, and chosen successor. Netero repeatedly tests Odin’s patience through his succession plans but embraces the opportunities for growth Odin provides 140 142 145 151.
  • Beyond Netero — Son. Netero restricts his Dark Continent expeditions; after the restriction is lifted, Beyond seeks to catch up with his father’s cultivation 146 209.
  • Ging — Expedition partner and fellow elite cultivator. They share an enthusiasm for difficult fights, compete over who will face the next opponent, and reach Nascent Soul during the same period 175 177 209.
  • Beans — Association administrator who handles Netero’s orders and protests his recklessness. Netero later approves of his discretion toward Odin 141 147.
  • Morel, Knov, and Kirkia — Fellow hunters in the Chimera Ant operation and later expedition. Netero asks Odin to evacuate them when they can no longer safely remain near the Queen 132 135 151.
  • Menchi — Hunter Exam examiner under his authority. He holds her accountable for an unfair test while allowing her to remain in charge 22.
  • Gon and Killua — Examinees with whom he plays aboard the airship. He nevertheless refuses to overturn Killua’s failed exam result 24 45.
  • Meruem — Desired opponent whose durability and rapid adaptation overcome Netero’s speed advantage; Odin ends their duel to save Netero 138 139 140.
