Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Pre-Nen bee handling 17 18 Commands poisonous bees through finger movements and sounds; uses them to detect people, navigate hazards, and intercept attackers.
Aura sensing and Nen awakening 49 Senses aura after more than two weeks of training and receives guided awakening.
Ten and Manipulation classification 49 Learns Ten and establishes her basic foundation in a little over a month. A spinning leaf during Water Divination identifies her as a Manipulator.
First Nen-linked bee 50 Feeds a bee Nen-coated honey, allowing it to accept her aura. She can sense the bee and begins influencing its movements.
Multi-bee control 51 Progresses from controlling two bees to ten simultaneously by the seventh day of this training period.
Sensory feedback 51 Sending bees beyond familiar surroundings produces faint feedback; by the twentieth day, she can perceive what they see and feel more clearly.
Bee-assisted hovering 51 Nine Nen-strengthened bees lift her into the air. At this stage, they can keep her hovering rather than provide full flight.
Thirty-bee control; 500-meter range 52 Assigns thirty bees separate tasks. Both control and sensory contact cease beyond five hundred meters.
Ren endurance 52 53 Maintains Ren for twenty-eight minutes, later improving slightly beyond that.
Night reconnaissance 53 Confirms that her bees provide clear sensory feedback in darkness.
Improved unarmed combat 54 Reaches Heavens Arena’s 190th floor without using Nen, correcting her balance, footwork, and striking through Odin’s coaching.
First documented 200th-floor victory 55 Defeats a physically superior Enhancer by using bees to distract and poison her, then exploiting her slowed movements.
Refined Zetsu 60 Suppresses her presence while approaching a giant dragonfly; Odin notes her improvement.
Giant-dragonfly control 61 62 Builds trust through Nen, then learns to direct the dragonfly’s wing movements and high-speed flight.
Reinforced dragonfly and sustained flight 63 Its wings become harder than steel. It carries her at high speed for about five minutes, or flies slowly and hovers for over an hour.
Insect-form Chameleon Cat control 111 114 115 120 Learns to strengthen and direct transforming creatures while they are in insect form; develops increasingly precise flight formations with five helpers.
Potion-assisted physical growth 108 Seven days of training with a strength-enhancing potion improve her muscles. Her individual percentage increase is not stated.
Internal-energy cultivation begins 124 Odin installs Nen Script meridians and a dantian with the Tiger Talisman’s help. She learns to generate and store internal energy but initially cannot sense ambient heaven-and-earth energy.
Foundation Establishment 130 Reaches Foundation Establishment after accumulating a fist-sized mass of true qi within her Nen Script dantian.
Aerial combat against a Royal Guard 136 Fights Shaiapouf using dragonfly wings and summoned dragonflies, demonstrating her ability to contest a dangerous airborne opponent.
Protective Nen barrier 191 Her Nen forms a protective layer during Odin’s breakthrough, shielding her nearby animal companions despite the overwhelming pressure.

Background / History

Ponzu grew up in a remote village with a few dozen households. Her family kept bees for honey, and she cared for them from childhood. After school, she checked the village hives for sickness and predators; the villagers planted flowers together to provide nectar 35 56 57.

Before entering the Hunter Exam, she had rarely traveled far from home. Her father considered the outside world dangerous, but she wanted to study insects beyond the bees she already knew. Her ambition was to become an Insect Hunter who researches rare species and protects those nearing extinction 35 45.

After earning her license, Ponzu accompanied Odin to Heavens Arena and stayed in his spare bedroom. Their exam partnership developed into a shared routine of training, travel, and exploration. She later brought him home to meet her parents 45 46 56.

Appearance

  • Clothing: Wears orange clothes and a yellow hat during the Hunter Exam 34.
  • Distinctive hat: Contains a specially made hive into which she recalls her bees 18.
  • Later insect storage: After establishing Nen connections, she also keeps bees in her sleeves and beneath her collar rather than only in her hat 52.
  • Aerial silhouette: A giant dragonfly grips her from behind to carry her, giving her a fairy-like appearance in flight 63.

Personality

Ponzu is cautious around strangers but willing to cooperate when each partner has something useful to offer. In Demin Swamp, earlier encounters with deceptive creatures make her wary of Odin; she accepts his proposal only after assessing him and their situation 17.

She treats insects as trustworthy companions, believing they are more honest than people because they do not lie. Her care extends to calming distressed bees, mourning losses from her swarm, and patiently building trust with a captured dragonfly 18 35 61.

Comparing herself with unusually gifted peers frequently discourages her. Odin’s rapid Nen development leaves her frustrated, and she later worries that Gon and Killua will overtake her. Nevertheless, she keeps practicing, revises failed methods, and eventually stops exhausting herself simply to match Odin’s training pace 48 50 53 92.

Ponzu also wants to contribute rather than remain dependent on her partner. She hesitates to accept Odin’s badges, insists on confronting her own exam target, and proposes competing at Heavens Arena to help earn money. Her conservation goals do not make her a rigid idealist: she has no desire to preserve man-eating Chimera Ants 35 37 53 138.

Abilities & Skills

Insect Expertise and Handling

Ponzu’s insect-handling skills predate her Nen awakening and come from years of caring for bees 35 56 57.

  • Uses bees to locate people, animals, and routes through dangerous terrain 17 18 19 37.
  • Recognizes that Hypnotic Discs’ chemicals do not affect insects and uses her swarm to drive them away 18.
  • Calms pollen-distracted bees with a petal from the flower attracting them 18.
  • Understands giant dragonflies’ feeding habits, flight behavior, folding bodies, and sharp wing edges 60 61 80.
  • Improvises animal countermeasures, including smoke to flush out a snake charmer and a pungent liquid to repel snakes 37.

Nen-Based Insect Manipulation

Her Manipulation affinity suits her existing work with bees. She first establishes a Nen connection through honey after direct attempts to attach aura frighten them 49 50.

  • Control: Directs thirty bees simultaneously, including separate assignments for individual bees 52.
  • Feedback: Receives sensory information from her insects, including clear reconnaissance feedback at night 51 53.
  • Documented range: Five hundred meters for bee control and sensory contact at that stage of training 52.
  • Reinforcement: Nen increases her bees’ strength, defenses, speed, and endurance 51.
  • Restriction: Her ability applies to insects. She can strengthen and control a Chameleon Cat only after it transforms into an insect 111.

Aerial Mobility and Coordinated Insect Combat

Ponzu develops flight to keep herself away from ground-level fighting while directing her insects 51 63.

  • Nine enhanced bees can lift her into a hover 51.
  • A Glassy Giant-vein Dragonfly provides substantially faster flight and can carry her for about five minutes at high speed 63.
  • Alternates fast dragonfly strikes with dense bee attacks to deny opponents openings 82.
  • Keeps more than twenty meters above Machi during their fight, limiting Machi’s ability to reach her with Nen threads 82.
  • Recognizes that flight does not guarantee victory and continues seeking better defense and a true ranged attack 84 92.
  • Uses dragonfly wings and additional dragonflies in aerial combat against Shaiapouf 136.

Poison Attacks

Her bees provide a way to weaken opponents she cannot overpower directly 55.

  • Stings slow her Enhancement-type arena opponent enough for Ponzu to turn the fight in her favor 55.
  • Poison is ineffective against Killua because of his unusually high resistance 36.
  • Bees can be disrupted by insect repellent and may refuse to enter snake-filled spaces 37.
  • Insect scouts remain vulnerable to powerful Nen users; members of the Phantom Troupe kill bees sent too close to them 73.

Personal Combat and Nen Fundamentals

Ponzu develops her own fighting ability rather than relying exclusively on insects 54.

  • Improves balance, footwork, and striking through repeated matches and Odin’s detailed feedback 54.
  • Defeats ordinary fighters through the 190th floor without using Nen 54.
  • Uses Zetsu for stealth during insect capture and an ambush 60 81.
  • Demonstrates strong Ren to qualify for Battera’s Greed Island team 92.
  • Breaks free of Odin’s experimental Binding Art 4, “This Rope” 105.
  • Extends protective Nen around her companions during Odin’s overwhelming aura release 191.

Internal-Energy Cultivation

Odin creates Nen Script meridians and a dantian within Ponzu, giving her a means to generate and retain energy alongside Nen 124.

  • Learns to produce and store internal energy 124.
  • Initially struggles to sense heaven-and-earth energy; Odin supplies true qi to help her recognize its sensation 124.
  • Reaches Foundation Establishment 130.
  • Her five Chameleon Cats and two dragonflies receive simplified Nen Script “demon cores” that autonomously gather energy and strengthen their bodies. Her bees are not given these cores 131.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Hive hat — Yellow hat with a specially constructed hive for her bees 18 34.
  • Poisonous bees — Longstanding companions used for scouting, guarding, poison attacks, and later Nen-assisted hovering 17 35 51.
  • Two Glassy Giant-vein Dragonflies — Combat and flight companions; their naturally sharp wings become much tougher with Nen 63 80 131.
  • Five Chameleon Cats — Transforming helpers also referred to as chinchillas. Ponzu trains their insect forms for combat and coordinated movement 111 114 130 138.
  • Hunter License 287-246 — Grants professional Hunter privileges, including access to restricted areas, intelligence, and designated financial services 45.
  • Snake-repelling liquid — Produces an odor that deters venomous snakes for roughly one or two minutes 37.
  • Bandages and travel gear — Uses supplies from her backpack to treat a shoulder wound during the exam 35.
  • Strength-enhancing potion — Used during a week-long training routine to improve her muscles 108.

Relationships

  • Odin — Exam ally, traveling companion, housemate, and principal training partner. He repeatedly protects her and shares resources, while encouraging her to develop independent combat solutions. He later establishes her internal-energy cultivation system 17 35 46 51 124.
  • Kumu Shiming — Her father, also called Kumu. Initially wary of her traveling outside the village; later welcomes Odin and takes an interest in her cultivation 35 56 129.
  • Eve — Her mother. Affectionate and concerned about Ponzu’s safety, particularly her participation in Heavens Arena 55 56 57.
  • Kirkia / Kokuya — Her Nen instructor; called Kirkia in the introductory chapters and Kokuya in the awakening account. Guides her early training, encourages patience, and identifies her Manipulation affinity 46 48 49.
  • Gon — Fellow examinee and later ally. Reunites warmly with her at Heavens Arena and Greed Island, and fights alongside her against the Phantom Troupe 55 81 105.
  • Killua — Initially a dangerous exam rival whose poison resistance neutralizes her bees. His surrender gives her the final-exam victory; later, he acknowledges that her Nen reserves exceed his at that point 36 43 55.
  • Leorio — Assigned Ponzu as his fourth-phase target. Abandons the attempt to take her badge with Gon and Kurapika; later joins her on the Phantom Troupe ambush team 38 81.
  • Machi — Phantom Troupe opponent. Ponzu uses height and alternating insect attacks to keep her on the defensive 82.
  • Shaiapouf — Royal Guard opponent whom Ponzu engages in aerial combat inside the Chimera Ant nest 136.
