Nature and Purpose

Hell is not simply a destination for the wicked dead. It contains fallen gods, displaced civilizations, ordinary humans, vengeful spirits, and native creatures. Humans from many different worlds occasionally fall into it 949 1049.

The Feather Pen describes Hell as belonging neither to the Calamity nor to the Main Universe. Its existence predates the earliest self-aware embodiments of rules; she considers it likely to be a balancing mechanism operating alongside the Great Purge 802.

Its older function was a repository of specimens and seeds of life. At the end of an era, the Great Purge erased the gods of the cosmos, while Hell preserved fallen deities and their knowledge for the next cycle. The account qualifies this as what Hell had been at least once, rather than an unchanging description of its present purpose 1221.

  • Imprisonment: Fallen deities are watched and controlled from the moment they arrive 702.
  • Torment rather than release: Lynn concludes that Hell keeps gods suffering without allowing them to perish completely. Sir Awen likewise warns that survival does not mean protection from mutilation, corruption, or endless pain 740 811.
  • Eventual assimilation: Ancient prisoners can lose their identities and become part of Hell. Later historical accounts describe old souls reduced to husks by time and their curses 1687 2662.
  • Not identical to the Abyss: The Matriarch distinguishes Hell from the Abyss, a chaotic interweaving of planes that once held the evil reputation commonly associated with “hell” 813.

Geography and Environment

  • Black mist and sky: Dense black mist shrouds Hell, with chaotic colors stretching above it along the boundary 740 810 1242.
  • Azure phenomena: The mist has dispersed and the boundary turned azure during exceptional upheavals, including an unprecedented event shortly after Lynn’s fall 1263.
  • Coasts: Xian Yue arrived through the waves at a shattered, rain-soaked shore beneath the black mist 1536.
  • Distinctive aura: Hell has a grotesque black aura that Lynn distinguishes from ordinary yin energy 1122 1224.

Notable Locations

Location Significance
Hell Borderland Boundary targeted by ancient and modern escape attempts. Cthulhu reveals that the border itself is a living being, not merely a barrier or restriction 954 1218.
Dark Night City Headquarters of the Night Doctors and the center of Lynn’s growing alliance; eventually becomes Hell’s de facto capital 270 2137.
City of Sin Home to native undead such as the Skeleton Ghost General 1130.
Wandering Soul Alley A gathering place for vicious ghosts on the outskirts of the City of Sin; contains the Bloodsaw Apothecary where Lynn lived and worked 786 1130 1151.
Doll Manor / Black Fortress Home of the Dollhouse family. The Black Fortress occupies one of Hell’s firstborn-power nodes 1536 2031.
Endless Sea Region governed through Hell Authority. Its mechanisms include a throne capable of controlling a Boundary Gate to the Main Universe 1795 1799.
Sky City A major ritual center used during the Second Great Fall to locate and transfer deities from the Main Universe 2012.
Hellfire Corridor A barely passable lava route between the two largest volcanoes in a volcanic range stretching hundreds of thousands of kilometers. The surrounding region is nearly uninhabitable except for certain Elemental Beings 1829.
Demon Association headquarters Built above a node that supplies firstborn power, benefiting its cultivation and research into mechanical-flesh hybrids 2031.

Rule and Inhabitants

Ruling Authorities

Figure or Group Position
Painter / Female Host Lord of Hell and one of the ancient Three Pillar Gods; shelters the realm and commands its Jailers 1709 1980 2012.
Violet Great Lord Ancient ruler whose legacy includes Hell’s authorities. Lynn’s identity as his last soul fragment allows him to claim an authority that should otherwise reject him 1799.
Pighead Butcher Jailer tasked with maintaining balance, preventing Old Gods from leaving, and allowing the Great Lord to grow and revive within Hell 810.
Laughing-Crying / Weeping Clown Jailer associated with the Curse Authority and the deepening of prisoners’ curses; later joins Lynn’s side 1630 1683.
Lin Meng Authorizes the easing of Hell’s restrictions under the Female Host’s instructions, allowing Lynn’s forces to leave 2143.
Four Kings’ armies Historically the mainstay of Hell’s forces before the Calamity descended upon the Main Universe 1794.
Seven Border Kings Administrators in the Edge World who answered Hell’s call more than ten thousand years earlier. Lynn regards them as part of the broader Jailer hierarchy 2156.

Possessing an Authority is described as the condition for becoming a true warden rather than remaining a prisoner. Certain high-ranking beings belonging to Hell can make partial adjustments to its mechanisms under specific circumstances 782 809.

Population and Factions

  • Fallen deities: Gods from the current and earlier eras, including the collectively named Old Days Deities 954.
  • Native Origins: The Flesh Dominator is described as native to Hell and rumored to have arisen from the remains of defeated Old Days Deities 702 954.
  • Fallen evil spirits: Humans can become powerful vengeful ghosts through hatred and obsession. Lady Blood Cloak and Alice are examples of former humans 1007.
  • Native undead: Unlike fallen evil spirits, the Skeleton Ghost General lacks hatred-driven explosive rank growth, relying instead on accumulated knowledge and combat experience 1130.
  • Major organizations: The Night Doctors, Flesh God Cult, Mechanical Church, Demon Association, and Dollhouse operate within Hell 612 951 2015.
  • Hell’s Pact: Lynn’s alliance gathers previously divided Origins and prepares Hell’s inhabitants for war in the Main Universe 2137 2543.

Hell’s population is not uniformly evil. Lynn warns that benevolent monsters are rare, but his bonds with its inhabitants demonstrate that even ghosts can retain tenderness, family attachments, and loyalty 1011 1151.

Mechanisms and Restrictions

Capture and Forced Recall

Hell monitors living beings throughout the Main Universe by unknown means. A dead being whose hatred exceeds a certain threshold and who refuses to depart life can be forcibly dragged into it 1221.

  • Summoned visitors can be recalled: When Lynn’s time outside expires, a black fissure opens and insubstantial chains bind him. His resistance triggers a forceful return 316.
  • Capture can be deliberately triggered: Sir Awen channels the Seraphim’s black aura through a Magic Array to draw Hell’s attention and activate its mechanism 1221.
  • Mass transfers are possible: During the Second Great Fall, ritual centers across Hell locate deities throughout the Main Universe and drag them through rifts 2012.

Curses and Contamination

Curses serve as both shackles and sources of power. Drawing deeply on that power can erode a prisoner’s rationality and identity 733.

  • Split consciousness: Hell’s corruption produces an evil consciousness within the Matriarch, eventually capable of briefly suppressing her primary consciousness 644 766.
  • Physical transformation: Xian Yue receives the Doll Curse upon stepping onto Hell’s shore; its later deepening removes her remaining flesh and blood 1536.
  • Altered primordial nature: The Mother Tree’s contamination becomes part of her Primordial Source. The heart states that removing it would require control of all Hell 1687.
  • Progressive erosion: Some ancient Origins hide to slow Hell’s stripping of their Marks, but prolonged survival does not guarantee escape from assimilation 2083 2662.

Rank Suppression

Hell locks the power of Ancient Gods at the Origin level. Attempts to exceed that limit can awaken or intensify curses 1329 1650.

  • Colossus backlash: Reassembling the complete Colossus causes black threads to crawl over her body and try to split her apart again 1650.
  • Jailer limits: Even Jailers are generally restricted to around Origin level because advancement destabilizes the balance between Chaos and their own power 1794.
  • Temporary release: Firstborn Power can suppress curses, break shackles, and sever a prisoner’s connection to Hell long enough to restore higher combat strength 1666 1794.
  • Not universally applicable: Ether is explicitly described as unsuppressed by Hell, although the Origins he devours remain subject to its restrictions 1971.
  • Weakened enforcement: As Hell’s foundations become strained, suppression loosens, potentially allowing the Mechanical Church to retrieve technologies it had abandoned after falling 1836.

Hell’s Gaze and Backlash

Interfering with fate or prying into laws can attract Hell’s Gaze. Lynn’s status records it as a special anomaly after his use of the Feather Pen’s Authority 786.

  • Warning signs: Its description warns against trusting shadows or answering nearby whispers 786.
  • Rule disruption: A single glance leaves Lynn’s body shattered, disables his Authorities and healing, destabilizes his consciousness, and prevents his Doll Substitute from activating 809.
  • Deception is unreliable: Colossus Brain divides herself into countless consciousnesses to evade Hell’s lock, but later suspects Hell knew about her throughout the three thousand years she spent hiding 694 821.
  • Origins cannot simply overpower it: The assembled group acknowledges that confronting Hell’s gaze directly could worsen the backlash 820.

Gates and Escape

Summoning arrays can connect Hell to other worlds, but such contact does not grant unrestricted passage. A closing cultist rift prevents Lynn from crossing to Blue Star 918.

  • Boundary enforcement: Chains, enormous eyes, a rotting hand, and an Undead Ancient Ship oppose the Colossus’s ascent 703.
  • Ordinary spatial methods fail: Even ancient deities specializing in space fail to forcibly open the barrier between worlds 1224.
  • Authorized access: Lynn’s legendary Gate skill awakens an ancient mechanism and opens a Boundary Gate. He attributes its success to authorization from Hell 1224.
  • Administrative release: Restrictions can be eased by the Jailers acting on the Female Host’s instructions 2143.
  • Escape is possible: An Old God’s appearance outside Hell convinces Lynn that sufficient power and curse removal can make departure achievable 1220.

Firstborn-Power Infrastructure

Ravens distribute seeds of life, sustain Hell, and supply Painter with power to reinforce both the Main Universe and Hell’s mechanism 2669.

  • Power nodes: Sites such as the Black Fortress and the Demon Association headquarters offer early access to the firstborn power sustaining the realm 2031.
  • Existential vulnerability: Lynn infers that detonating every raven could unleash enough firstborn power to collapse Hell and devastate the Jailer Group 2669.

History and Major Arcs

Ancient Cycles and the Old Gods’ Rebellion

Hell preserved fallen gods through successive Great Purges. Captain Constantine once contracted with it to escort sinners into exile, only to lose his Divine Spark of death and be imprisoned himself when his era’s Purge arrived 1221 1671.

In a distant age, Old Days Deities united for an assault on Hell Borderland. Cthulhu recalls watching his comrades fall and discovering that the border was itself alive. Later histories remember this as the first genuine united war by Hell’s Origins against the realm, with no meaningful resistance arising again before Lynn’s era 1218 2661.

The Fall Three Thousand Years Earlier

The Colossus Civilization fought the Calamity and fell into Hell after its defeat. Colossus Brain dismembered the Colossi to conceal their consciousnesses, transformed herself into the High Tower, and waited underground for another ascent 694.

The Colossus’s eventual escape attempt exposed the realm’s active suppression. The God of Ten Thousand Machines subsequently concluded that his present strength could not secure escape and resolved to divide his collective consciousness 700 703 763.

Lynn’s Connection to Hell

Lynn initially interpreted his survival of Hell’s backlash as evidence that the realm was protecting him. He later theorized that the Pighead Butcher had personally brought him into Hell to prevent the Calamity from finding him 809 1247.

His connection became decisive at the Western Sea’s Throne. Recognizing himself as the last Raven and the Violet Great Lord’s final soul fragment, Lynn successfully wielded Hell’s authority and stopped a Boundary Gate from opening to the Main Universe 1799.

Painter nevertheless continued interfering with his fate. She admitted that she wanted him to become someone who had promised to marry her, while a visiting old man warned that awakening the Great Lord within him might determine whether Lynn was saved or replaced 1441.

Ether War and the Second Great Fall

Ether’s true form attacked Hell from outside, seeking reunion with the fragment trapped within. Despite the boundary’s weakened state, he failed to break through; Hell ultimately began devouring his enormous body 1980 1985 2004.

After the Female Host awakened, a massive transfer ritual brought another generation of deities into Hell. The Second Great Fall shattered the order maintained for three thousand years 2005 2012 2014.

Newly fallen gods devastated cities and repeatedly attempted escape. Eleven northern cities were destroyed, and every reported attempt to break through the Borderland ended in suppression by the Jailers and Hell’s mechanisms 2015.

Unification and Return to the Main Universe

Disguised as a black-robed challenger, Lynn defeated Origins across Hell to create a common threat and force its strongest beings to pursue mastery of Laws. After revealing himself, he declared his intention to unite the realm’s scattered forces 2083 2086 2109 2111.

Hell’s Pact spread, and Dark Night City became the realm’s capital in practice. Lin Meng then eased the restrictions under the Female Host’s orders, allowing Lynn’s army to return to the Main Universe against the Calamity 2137 2143.

Hell itself remained vulnerable. The battle between Painter and the Calamity caused continual earthquakes, an azure sky, falling monsters, and the ruin of several Mega Cities. Dark Night City survived under the protection of the Big Fingers 2538.

Later, Dark Night City’s forces and the Jailers agreed to share control of the reclaimed Divine Realm, using Aivier’s Palace as their dividing line. Hell continued to exist into subsequent ages 2543 2647.
