Background / History

Early life

Riko lost her parents when she was too young to remember their deaths or understand grief. Raised to believe she was special because of her identity as the Star Plasma Vessel, she lived cautiously and treated eventual assimilation with Tengen as the purpose of her life. Misato Kuroi cared for her for years, becoming as close to her as family 10.

Despite that responsibility, Riko enjoyed ordinary student experiences: sweets, outings, and karaoke with classmates. These memories became important when she confronted the prospect of losing her own life through assimilation 10.

Star Plasma Vessel escort

Tengen assigned Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, and Kamo Xu to protect Riko and deliver her for assimilation. Geto rescued her from a building after an explosion. Upon awakening in Gojo’s arms, she mistook him for an enemy, slapped him, and insulted both him and Geto 7.

The escort included an attack on her school, Kuroi’s capture, and a seaside visit where Riko played in the water with Gojo and Geto. Before leaving to confront Toji Fushiguro alone, Xu touched her shoulder and cryptically warned that her survival would depend on her toughness 8.

After the group reached Jujutsu High, Toji ambushed Gojo inside the barrier. Geto took Riko and Kuroi toward Tengen’s residence while Gojo remained behind to fight 9.

Refusing assimilation and surviving Toji

Riko tearfully embraced Kuroi before continuing into the Tombs of the Star Corridor. There, Geto offered her the choice to return home, revealing that all three escorts had agreed to protect her future if she refused assimilation. Recognizing that she wanted to live, Riko accepted his offer 10.

Toji shot her in the head as she reached for Geto’s hand. After defeating Geto, he discovered that she still had a heartbeat: a flattened bullet floated in her churning blood without penetrating farther. He identified this as Xu’s safeguard, then bound her and carried her away inside his Inventory Curse Worm 10 11.

Toji delivered her alive to the Time Vessel Association. Its representative, Shigeru Sonoda, attempted to sacrifice her, but her blood prevented his knife from penetrating beyond her skin. Gojo located Xu’s faint cursed energy within her, interrupted the sacrifice, and rescued her 12.

Xu’s revival and enrollment

Gojo recognized that Riko’s blood contained part of Xu’s soul. Shoko Ieiri used Reverse Cursed Technique to multiply a drop of that blood, which then entered Xu’s body and helped reconstruct his circulation. With Shoko repairing his organs, his heart began beating again, although he remained unconscious with severe brain damage 13.

Tengen’s representatives subsequently discovered the foreign soul and cursed energy inside Riko. Concerned that assimilation could cause cursed-energy collapse or a clash of souls, the higher-ups abandoned the procedure. Unable to resume an ordinary life immediately, Riko reluctantly transferred to Jujutsu High at Gojo’s insistence 13.

She declined Kuroi’s offer to remain at the school, saying that she was no longer the Star Plasma Vessel and wanted Kuroi to live a life of her own 13.

Geto’s trainee and defection

Masamichi Yaga assigned Riko to accompany Geto as a rookie trainee. She experimented with blood manipulation during their travels and encouraged him to take breaks when she noticed his exhaustion 14.

After Xu awakened, he instructed her to stay beside Geto and interrupt him whenever he began brooding. Riko accepted this task out of gratitude to her lifesaver 16.

During a village mission, Geto sent her to count the residents while he investigated the source of accumulating cursed energy. She returned to find him massacring the villagers. Riko demanded an explanation and tried to stop him with blood manipulation, but his cursed spirit knocked her unconscious. Her unusual blood allowed her to survive, and an Assistant Supervisor later found her amid the ruined village 17.

Years later, Riko remained haunted by her failure to stop Geto, blaming herself for not being stronger and for leaving his side 26.

Personality

Riko is lively, outspoken, and quick to challenge others. Her first encounter with her escorts involves slapping Gojo and mocking Geto’s face and bangs. After joining Jujutsu High, she proudly boasts about her aim when she hits Gojo with an eraser during a test of his automatic defense 7 13.

Her enthusiasm can overwhelm Geto: she repeatedly thrusts her blood creations in front of him to show off. She nevertheless notices his fatigue and suggests food and a break. She also avoids returning exposed blood to her body because she worries that contact with the air has contaminated it with bacteria 14.

Riko’s affection and gratitude strongly influence her choices. She openly expresses her love for Kuroi, encourages her to pursue an independent life, and takes Xu’s request to watch over Geto seriously. Her inability to prevent Geto’s massacre leaves her with lasting guilt 10 13 16 26.
