| Established use of both Mega forms | 784 785 889 | Uses its X and Y forms during its confrontation with Kyurem. Later outmaneuvers White Kyurem in X form with Teleport, physical attacks, and Recover, forcing its retreat. |
| Confirmed autonomous Mega Evolution | 870 | Mewtwo explicitly describes itself as capable of Mega Evolving without an Evolution Stone while investigating whether other Pokémon can do the same. This clarifies the mechanism rather than marking a newly acquired form. |
Background / History
Creation and Lost Companions
Team R created Mewtwo through its God-Making Plan. The Pokémon League’s undercover operation, codenamed Gene, sought to uncover that project; the dying agent Li Zhiyong entrusted Ye Qing with obtaining Mewtwo’s information 17 24.
Mewtwo later examined memories from Ye Qing’s previous world. These showed Team Rocket discovering Mew’s fossilized eyelash and using it to produce Mewtwo through cloning. Mewtwo recognized the younger clone as itself, although Ye Qing acknowledged that its creation in the present world might have differed from the version he remembered 22 25.
The memories also revealed Ai 2, a cloned girl who befriended young Mewtwo alongside cloned Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. Ai taught them about the world in a shared realm of consciousness. After the other clones disappeared, Ai also faded away, urging Mewtwo to keep living. Young Mewtwo wept, entered a prolonged sleep, and eventually forgot its companions 26.
Mewtwo subsequently found Team R records confirming its genetic connection to Mew. During their later confrontation, Ye Qing argued that Mewtwo also contained human genes and had become an independent individual through repeated reconstruction. Mewtwo judged his explanation truthful; Ye Qing’s reasoning drew partly on another version of Mewtwo’s creation from his previous world rather than a newly witnessed account of this world’s laboratory procedures 237.
Team R’s Captivity
Team R released Mewtwo during a League assault on its Jinxi Forest encampment. Mewtwo incapacitated most surrounding League personnel through its psychic voice and crushed the attacking Dragonite. When it refused to leave, Yanlang activated its electrical restraints, knocking it unconscious, then ordered its recent memories erased and its body placed into dormancy 19 20.
The memory wipe left traces behind. A researcher warned that another complete erasure might no longer be possible, while Mewtwo continued questioning its identity and its creators’ right to make it 21.
At a volcanic island, Mewtwo’s Legendary aura awakened Moltres after Hydreigon’s bombardment failed to do so. Their battle triggered a massive eruption. Mewtwo defeated Moltres but refused Yanlang’s demand to stop the injured bird from escaping 22 23 24.
Friendship and Escape
Assigned to guard Mewtwo, Ye Qing volunteered to deliver its food and offered answers about its origin. Mewtwo agreed to read only memories concerning its birth. Learning about Ai and its forgotten companions gave it a reason to seek them again, though Ye Qing could only suggest that Ai might be somewhere within Team R 24 25 26.
Mewtwo thanked Ye Qing with a Silver Spoon and tentatively accepted him as a friend. It explained that freedom required either destroying the Control Device or moving ten thousand meters away from it 27.
Ye Qing and Chimchar subdued the guards, then escaped with Mewtwo on Arcanine. Despite being suppressed by its shackles, Mewtwo shielded both companions from Hydreigon’s Hyper Beam. Once free, it blocked Tri Attack, drove Yanlang away, shattered the restraints, and teleported the group to safety. It then returned Ye Qing and Arcanine to Jinxi Forest before leaving to handle other matters 28 29.
Mewtwo later breached Team R’s Secret Base through the mountainside and confronted Yanlang and Blood Hand. It rebuked Yanlang for still trying to cause trouble for someone else while facing imminent danger 45 46.
Seeking Opponents and the New Island Gathering
As its power increased, Mewtwo asked Ye Qing which first-tier Legendary Pokémon would be worth challenging. Ye Qing recommended Groudon, citing Mewtwo’s flight and Teleport as advantages, while Mewtwo confidently declared that it would not lose. During the same visit, it infused Ralts with psychic energy, increasing her potential and teaching her new moves 135.
Mewtwo’s subsequent battle with Groudon attracted worldwide attention, though its outcome was not established in the available reports. Reports also described Mewtwo destroying islands and Legendary Pokémon’s lairs. Its invitations to New Island consequently drew international interest, with countries sending Elite Four Trainers to establish contact 193 229.
At the New Island banquet, Mewtwo offered a Gible egg as the prize for a competition and demanded temporary custody of the guests’ Pokémon. It effortlessly subdued two protesting Elite Four members and publicly invited Ye Qing to sit beside it as its brother. Team R personnel served the meal, despite Mewtwo’s previous attacks on the organization 230.
The gathering developed into a confrontation between the guests’ Pokémon and their clones. Still unable to accept being a copy, Mewtwo prepared to command its clone army against the originals. The Dragon Tamer intervened with Mega Gyarados, but Ye Qing believed that only Mew could provide enough opposition to make Mewtwo reconsider 232 233 236.
Confrontation and Reconciliation with Mew
When Mew arrived, Mewtwo recognized it as its genetic original and immediately attacked. It insisted that it was the strongest and the true original, declaring that only one of them would survive. Their battle devastated the castle and Colosseum and threatened the entire island 237.
Ye Qing had Kirlia teleport him between the combatants. He told Mewtwo that its independent emotions, thoughts, and altered genetic composition made it a unique life rather than a mere copy. Mewtwo gradually calmed down after determining that Ye Qing was not lying 237.
Mew’s ability to Transform, which Mewtwo lacked, further reinforced their differences. Sensing the cloned Pokémon’s independent feelings finally led Mewtwo to accept that both it and Mew genuinely existed as Pokémon 238.
Mewtwo and Mew then erased the gathering’s memories, but Mewtwo stopped Mew from erasing Ye Qing’s memories because he was its little brother. At Ye Qing’s request, it also spared Cynthia’s memories. It transported the other humans to the nearest pier, gathered the cloned Pokémon, and destroyed the island, which the narration identifies as the place where Mewtwo had been created. After recharging Ye Qing’s Spoon Mark, it departed with the clones 238.
Continuing Aid to Ye Qing
Mewtwo later fought Rayquaza during the events surrounding Thunder City. It also agreed to help humans and Pokémon trapped in a forest fire after Ye Qing addressed it as his big brother and Mew as his second brother 255 258 261.
When Cynthia subsequently offered Ye Qing two Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon eggs for information about Mewtwo’s origins, he refused to disclose what he knew 283.
At Ye Qing’s summons, Mewtwo stopped a hundred-meter tsunami threatening Shuidi City. Its intervention was witnessed by crowds and the Dragon Tamer, making its connection to Ye Qing increasingly public. It replenished the Spoon Mark but warned Ye Qing not to summon it unless his life was in danger 401.
During a later visit with Mew, Mewtwo detected Giratina’s death energy on Ye Qing and announced its intention to settle its score with Team R. At Ye Qing’s request, it instead examined Wang Yao. It could not extract the soul fragment trapped inside the Spoon and offered to erase his painful memories; Ye Qing refused, leaving Mewtwo puzzled by his desire to preserve suffering associated with love 489.
National Tournament and Mega Mewtwo Y
Mewtwo visited Alto Mare after another qualitative increase in power. Its poorly contained aura overwhelmed the nearby Pokémon until Latios asked it to restrain itself. After learning that Ye Qing was competing in the National Tournament, it agreed to take Mew to watch the finals, explaining that important figures should appear at the most critical moment 533.
During Ye Qing’s battle with Luo Moyun, Mewtwo appeared behind Ye Qing while Ho-Oh descended into the arena. Their confrontation disturbed the sky. Mewtwo drew a golden flame from Infernape and empowered it, while Ho-Oh similarly strengthened Mega Charizard X, after which the match resumed 554.
Mewtwo later transformed into its smaller Y form and intervened when the modified Genesect attacked Ye Qing. It initially attempted to reason with them because they, like itself, had been altered by humans. When they continued targeting Ye Qing, it retaliated with Psystrike and overwhelming speed 607 609.
After ordering the Dragon Tamer and League troops away, Mewtwo isolated the surrounding area with a psychic barrier. It deliberately allowed the Burn Drive Genesect to reach Ye Qing as a training opportunity while it fought the others. It ultimately defeated the attackers, destroyed the Positioning Systems on all five Genesect, and took the red Genesect away 610 611.
Mewtwo later transported Ye Qing, Gardevoir, and the remaining four Genesect to a forest and began modifying the Genesect with disc-shaped devices so they would no longer be controlled by humans. It then told Ye Qing that it was investigating another evolutionary direction and should not be disturbed without an important reason 618 619.
Yveltal, Xerneas, and the Genesect Army
After Yveltal petrified Ye Qing and others, Mega Mewtwo Y confronted Xerneas over its effort to protect Yveltal. Mewtwo insisted that Yveltal deserved punishment and stated that it would force Ho-Oh to help revive Ye Qing if necessary. It ultimately accepted Xerneas’s offer to restore everyone immediately and reverted from its Mega form 644.
Once Xerneas revived the victims and became a withered tree, Mewtwo killed Mu Linsen after Ye Qing identified him as a mortal enemy. It also helped Diancie gain insight, warned Ye Qing to be more careful, and departed with the Genesect Army and Mu Linsen’s remaining Pokémon. Before leaving, it asked Ye Qing to bring back more highly intelligent Legendary or Mythical Pokémon for an unspecified purpose 644.
Mega Mewtwo X and the Search for Greater Strength
Mewtwo continued training while Ye Qing prepared for and participated in later competitions. It sought greater strength and was still training in the mountains during Wang Yao’s confrontation with the Pokémon League 679 737.
When Ho-Oh’s Sacred Fire threatened Ye Qing, Mewtwo emerged through shattered space in its newly revealed X form and kicked the attack back. Its aura immobilized numerous Pokémon, disrupted Mega Evolutions, and left the assembled League forces terrified. After asking Ye Qing which side Suicune supported, it punched the arriving Legendary into the distance 742.
Later, Mewtwo asked Ye Qing whether he had found a suitable opponent. Ye Qing led it to Kyurem’s lair in the Forbidden Territory. Mewtwo overwhelmed Kyurem, fighting in its Mega forms, then provided Reshiram’s coordinates so Kyurem could fuse and become a more challenging opponent for their next encounter 783 784 785.
By the time Ye Qing visited to train with Genesect, Mewtwo’s companions occupied a secluded forest refuge with a waterfall and pond. The cloned Pokémon from New Island were living there alongside the Genesect 858.
Mewtwo also secretly tested Psyduck’s unusual psychic capabilities. It infused energy into Psyduck’s brain to probe its limits while investigating whether other Pokémon could Mega Evolve without Evolution Stones and where Mega Evolution originated. It concluded that Psyduck still could not achieve the result it sought 870.
Later Battles with White Kyurem and Team R
Mewtwo intervened when Giovanni and White Kyurem attacked a tournament venue. In X form, it shattered ice attacks, repeatedly teleported around White Kyurem, struck its weak points, and healed its own burns with Recover. White Kyurem eventually retreated. Mewtwo did not pursue it, instead returning to base form, sitting on the venue’s roof with a flask of liquor, and ordering the match to continue 889.
Mewtwo later attended Ye Qing’s birthday banquet with Mew and gave him an Aggron Mega Stone. When Blaziken knelt and requested to become its disciple, Mewtwo refused and pushed it outside 903 904.
During an operation against Team R’s Ancient Pokémon camp, Mewtwo initially concealed its energy and breathing to avoid detection. Rather than indiscriminately bombard the camp, it used an electrical ground strike in X form that spread hundreds of meters, incapacitated personnel, disabled precision instruments, and opened some cages. It then blocked the Dark Ball-enhanced Moltres and Zapdos before confronting White Kyurem and Giovanni’s Mega-Evolved Pokémon 938.
The ensuing battle also saw it fight in Y form. Giovanni coordinated the opposing Legendary Pokémon to encircle it, while Mega Diancie created openings with Diamond Storm. Mewtwo used the diamonds defensively and redirected them with Confusion as precision projectiles 939.
Jirachi and the Origin Place
When countries sought to divide Jirachi’s wishes, Ye Qing rejected their plans and declared that he would act independently. Mewtwo’s voice spoke through him as he rose into the air, warning the gathered Trainers against interfering with his claim to Jirachi 947.
After the contest for Jirachi, Mewtwo visited Ye Qing’s island gathering. It reassured Ye Qing that it had not come to make a wish, then directly asked Jirachi whether any wish could be granted. Jirachi answered affirmatively; no specific wish from Mewtwo is established in that exchange 960.
At the Origin Place, Mewtwo arrived with Mew and stopped Evil Thoughts Hoopa’s attack before transforming into Mega Mewtwo Y. As the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon’s clashes caused space to collapse and a space-time storm to spread, Mewtwo sent Mew after Evil Thoughts Hoopa and joined the battle against the Space-Time Trio 1038.
Appearance
- Height: Approximately 1.9 meters 19.
- Body: Silvery-white, with a powerful tail 19.
- Distinguishing anatomy: A thick bundle of nerves connects its back to the rear of its head 19.
- Captivity equipment: Subtle restraints connect to its brain and central nervous system; they are difficult to notice without close inspection 20.
- Psychic effects: Uses pink light around its eyes and a pink spherical Barrier 23 29.
- Mega Mewtwo Y: A petite form with headphone-shaped protrusions on its head and a long tail extending from the back of its head. Its appearances and attacks are accompanied by blue light 607 609.
- Mega Mewtwo X: A muscular, silvery-white form with two additional horns, purple armor-like shoulder protrusions, thick arms, long legs, and a powerful tail 742.
Personality
Mewtwo is proud, dismissive of weaker opponents, and openly hostile to being commanded. It challenges Yanlang’s authority despite the restraints and treats Moltres with contempt. Guards describe food delivery as dangerous because of its temper, although their claims about deaths are reported testimony rather than directly shown incidents 20 22 23 24.
Beneath that arrogance, Mewtwo struggles with loneliness and uncertainty about whether it is human, Pokémon, or something else. Its memories of Ai evoke grief and warmth, revealing how deeply it values companionship. It rewards Ye Qing’s help, accepts their friendship, and protects him during their escape 21 25 26 27 28 29.
Its identity crisis persists after escaping Team R. At New Island, it cannot tolerate the idea of being Mew’s copy and attempts to establish its superiority through the cloned Pokémon and a direct battle with Mew. Ye Qing’s intervention and the clones’ independent feelings eventually help it accept itself as a distinct, genuinely existing Pokémon 232 236 237 238.
Mewtwo is strongly protective of Ye Qing, publicly recognizes him as its little brother, and exempts him from the New Island memory erasure. It nevertheless dislikes being summoned for minor problems and sometimes deliberately leaves him an opponent to encourage greater self-reliance 230 238 401 610 619.
Its sympathy extends particularly to other artificially altered Pokémon. It initially treats the Genesect as its own kind and attempts to reason with them before resorting to force. Later, it removes their tracking systems and modifies them to prevent further human control 609 611 618.
Mewtwo remains ruthless toward enemies and retains deep hatred for Team R, but its attitude toward unrelated humans changes. By the Ancient Pokémon camp operation, the narration explicitly attributes its reluctance to kill innocents indiscriminately to its experiences, its time with Ye Qing, and Mega Evolution 489 644 938.
It is also driven by the pursuit of stronger opponents and by intellectual curiosity about evolution. It gives Kyurem an opportunity to become stronger rather than accepting an unsatisfying victory, and investigates the underlying conditions of stone-free Mega Evolution through Psyduck 785 870.
Its aloof demeanor occasionally has a theatrical or competitive side: it enjoys being ranked as Ye Qing’s big brother ahead of Mew and deliberately plans to attend the tournament finals because important figures should arrive at critical moments. Its developing understanding of humanity remains incomplete, as shown by its confusion over Ye Qing’s refusal to erase Wang Yao’s painful memories 258 489 533.

Teleport
- Transports itself, Ye Qing, and Arcanine together to a secluded valley, then to the edge of Jinxi Forest 29.
- Cannot use Teleport while Team R’s restraints remain effective 27.
- Sends the humans from New Island to the nearest pier 238.
- Transports Ye Qing and groups of Pokémon, including Gardevoir and four Genesect, over long distances 618 783 858.
- Repeatedly evades White Kyurem’s attacks and strikes its weak points in X form, leaving White Kyurem unable to effectively restrict its movements 889.
- Evades White Kyurem’s Fusion Flare chains during the attack on Team R’s camp 938.
Recover and Durability
- Uses Recover to heal every surface wound after defeating Moltres 24.
- Takes only minor flesh wounds while shielding Ye Qing and Arcanine from Hydreigon’s Hyper Beam 28.
- Heals burns with Recover while fighting White Kyurem, allowing it to continue its teleporting counterattacks 889.
Mega Evolution and Physical Combat
Mewtwo possesses both Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Mewtwo X forms. It can achieve Mega Evolution on its own without an Evolution Stone, although its investigation into the underlying origin of that ability remains ongoing 607 609 742 870.
- Mega Mewtwo Y: Moves too quickly for Ye Qing to follow or even perceive an afterimage during its battle with Genesect 609.
- Mega Mewtwo X: Kicks Ho-Oh’s Sacred Fire back at its source and sends Suicune flying through villas with a single punch 742.
- Its X-form power pins down Entei, Articuno, and Raikou; some Mega-Evolved Pokémon revert outright, while Mega Garchomp and Mega Gyarados struggle to maintain their forms 742.
- Uses its Mega forms to overwhelm Kyurem, including physically breaking its teeth 784 785.
- Uses Focus Punch and teleporting physical attacks against White Kyurem 889.
Additional Offensive Moves
- Aura Sphere: Used against Mew and later fired in repeated barrages against Genesect 237 611.
- Shadow Ball: Produces an enormous blast against the Genesect and later forms a Shadow Ball in each palm while confronting Xerneas over Yveltal 611 644.
- Conjured spoon attacks: Uses its oversized spoon to strike Genesect into a mountainside 611.
Memory Manipulation
- Renders the two protesting Elite Four members unconscious and places them into a deep sleep at New Island 230.
- Collaborates with Mew to erase the New Island gathering’s memories through a pink mist 238.
- Interrupts Mew’s technique to preserve Ye Qing’s memories and agrees to spare Cynthia’s memories at Ye Qing’s request 238.
- Offers to erase Wang Yao’s painful memory, though Ye Qing declines 489.
Empowerment and Research
- Infuses Ralts with tremendous Psychic-type energy, raising her potential to S+, increasing her psychic affinity, and enabling her to learn Calm Mind and Heal Pulse ahead of time 135.
- Draws a golden flame from Infernape and empowers it during the National Tournament battle 554.
- Destroys the Positioning Systems on all five Genesect and later uses disc-shaped devices to modify the remaining four against human control 611 618.
- Helps Diancie gain insight after Xerneas’s revival of the petrified victims 644.
- Infuses psychic energy into Psyduck’s brain to test its limits and investigate autonomous Mega Evolution, but does not achieve the desired evolutionary result 870.
Control-Device Limitations
- Electrical restraints can knock Mewtwo unconscious and force it into Sleep Mode 20 27.
- Can resist their power for at most three minutes 27.
- Must destroy the Control Device or move ten thousand meters away to overcome its control 27.
- The attached device also relays internal energy readings and physical responses to Team R’s researchers 22.
Other Demonstrated Limitations
- Does not possess Mew’s Transform ability, a difference that helps it accept its independent identity 238.
- Cannot remove the soul fragment trapped inside the Spoon when examining Wang Yao 489.
- Cannot itself restore Ye Qing and the others after Yveltal’s petrification; it accepts Xerneas’s revival rather than delaying to continue punishing Yveltal 644.
- Ye Qing is temporarily unable to reach it before its arrival in X form, so the Spoon Mark does not guarantee an immediate response to every attempted summons 742.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Conjured combat spoon — Approximately two meters long; used to bat away Moltres’s flames and molten lava 23. Also manifested during its confrontation with Mew and wielded against Genesect 237 610 611.
- Silver Spoon gift — A five-centimeter spoon given to Ye Qing in thanks. It transforms into white light and becomes a spoon-shaped mark on his right wrist 27.
- Spoon mark — Glows visibly and retains a powerful trace of Mewtwo’s aura. Professor Qian’s level-fifty Alakazam faints immediately after touching it with psychic power 29 48. Functions as Ye Qing’s means of calling for Mewtwo’s assistance and requires its energy to be replenished. Mewtwo recharges it repeatedly but warns against nonessential summons 238 401 489.
- Team R restraints — Former suppression equipment; shattered after Mewtwo’s escape 20 29.
- Gible egg — Presented as the Pseudo-Legendary prize for the New Island competition 230.
- Genesect modification devices — Disc-shaped devices attached to the four remaining Genesect during modifications intended to free them from human control 618.
- Aggron Mega Stone — Given to Ye Qing as a birthday present 904.
- Liquor flask — Produced while sitting on the tournament venue’s roof after driving off White Kyurem 889.
Relationships
- Ye Qing — Friend and rescuer. Helps Mewtwo understand its origin and escape captivity; Mewtwo promises assistance and accepts his use of “Big bro” after learning it means friend 25 27 29. Their bond develops into an openly acknowledged brotherhood: Mewtwo calls him its brother before the New Island guests, preserves his memories, repeatedly protects him, and attends his birthday banquet 230 238 742 903 904. Ye Qing also helps resolve its hostility toward Mew and refuses to sell information about its origins to Cynthia 237 238 283.
- Ai / Ai 2 — Cherished companion from the memories of its early life. Mewtwo wants to find her again, but her existence or location in the present world remains unconfirmed. Ye Qing suggests “family” when Mewtwo asks what she means to it 26 29.
- Cloned Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur — Childhood companions in the memories viewed through Ye Qing; all disappear before Ai does 26.
- Mew — Genetic source of the clone shown in Ye Qing’s memories, derived from a fossilized eyelash 25. Initially a hated rival whom Mewtwo attacks to deny its status as a copy, but the two reconcile after Ye Qing’s intervention 237 238. They subsequently travel and intervene together, with Mew accepting the position of Ye Qing’s “second brother” 258 489 533 1038.
- Yanlang — Captor and controller. Mewtwo repeatedly rejects his commands, drives him away after escaping, and later confronts him at Team R’s base 20 22 24 29 46.
