Background / History

Before joining the academy, Zhao Xinran worked at the Pokémon Research Institute alongside Ye Qing’s aunt. Several years before her teaching appointment, she participated in a research project concerning the Tao Trio 35 47.

She takes over Class One while Teacher Liu is unwell. Her parents’ influence in the Ministry of Education makes Vice Principal Zhang Zhihong reluctant to antagonize her when she challenges his handling of Ye Qing’s exam results 31 34.

She continues teaching the class through the completion of its theoretical curriculum and explains the requirements for graduation. After Ye Qing and Wang Yao graduate, she goes abroad for further studies, and they have little contact with her during that period. She later approaches them again on behalf of the academy to invite Ye Qing to deliver a speech 136 1041.

Appearance

Zhao Xinran is described as a beautiful young woman, barely older than Ye Qing. Her arrival immediately draws applause and whistles from the class 32 48.

  • Facial features: Delicate eyebrows, large bright eyes, and red lips 34 45 47 48.
  • Build: Slender fingers and a shapely figure 48 49.
  • Clothing: Wears a black business suit while teaching and pointed high heels during her library conversation with Ye Qing 41 47. She also teaches in a white blouse, fitted skirt, and high heels 121.
  • Later appearance: When she reunites with Ye Qing and Wang Yao, she has wine-red, permed waves and a more mature figure 1041.

Personality

Zhao Xinran is protective of her students and willing to confront school authorities. Although initially doubtful that Ye Qing’s poor grades could improve so dramatically, she asks him directly whether he earned his score, accepts his assurance, and objects to a retake imposed without concrete evidence 33 34.

Her curiosity can become intrusive: she investigates Ye Qing’s background and repeatedly seeks more information about the Tao Trio. However, she apologizes for looking into him, stops pressing when he refuses to elaborate, and later checks whether her questioning has upset him 45 46 47.

She also wants recognition for her expertise. Her first contest question is deliberately drawn from obscure research to prevent older staff from underestimating her because of her youth. In less formal exchanges, she teases Ye Qing and playfully taps his forehead while reminding him not to be late 35 46.

She welcomes constructive rivalry, allowing Fujii Gongshu and Ye Qing’s competitive exchange because she believes having a rival will prevent them from stagnating. She also enjoys praise: after Ye Qing compliments her teaching, beauty, and talent, she chooses a favorable landing place for him during the island trial 75 84.

Her classroom discipline is motivated by concern for her students’ future safety. She becomes furious when Wang Yao’s sleeping and incorrect answer expose his poor grasp of Pokémon types, warning that such mistakes in the wilderness could cost him his life. Nevertheless, she is willing to test Ye Qing’s understanding rather than judge him solely by the appearance of his written assignment 121 122.

In her later reunion with Ye Qing, she alternates between familiar teasing and formal respect. Although she still speaks to him as a former student, she adopts a deferential tone when arranging his school visit, recognizing his position among the world’s strongest Trainers 1041.

Abilities & Skills

  • Recognizes the difficulty of evolving Feebas and directs Ye Qing to relevant material on the library’s third floor 41.

Battle Planning

Zhao Xinran considers both Pokémon matchups and an opponent’s temperament when arranging Class One’s battle order 36.

  • Reasons that Zhang Qiang’s pride will lead him to reserve himself for the final position 36.
  • Assigns Zhang Na and Staryu first, Huo Mengyao and Growlithe second, and Ye Qing and Chimchar last. Class Three subsequently opens with Krabby, matching her prediction 36 37.
  • Limits: As a newly appointed teacher, she must ask the students which Pokémon each competitor owns 36.
  • Later coaches the academy’s three-on-three king-of-the-hill team of Fujii Gongshu, Morikawa Minako, and Ye Qing. With the opposing Pokémon unknown, she asks the participants for their opinions and accepts Fujii’s proposal to lead with his Speed Boost Combusken 127.
  • Prepares to send Ye Qing out ahead of schedule after seeing the opposing team’s Graveler, showing a willingness to adjust the lineup during the match 128.

Research Submission and League Access

Her former workplace connections qualify her to submit research to the Pokémon League’s higher-ups 47.

  • Explains that Legendary Pokémon information cannot circulate publicly, ruling out Ye Qing’s original plan to publish his article in the media 47.
  • Offers a confidential submission route that could earn him rewards and protection if the information proves valuable 47.
  • Submits his article and summons him to the resulting meeting with Professor Qian 48.

Teaching and Student Supervision

  • Teaches Pokémon evolution and type matchups, including questions about Kirlia’s evolved forms and Golduck’s weaknesses 72 121.

  • Explains the emergency wristbands used during the seven-day island trial and assists with transporting students to their starting locations 83 84.
  • Explains that students may apply to graduate after passing the Professional Trainer assessment and submitting their certificate and graduation thesis 136.

Deserted Island Trial and Wild Pokémon Invasion

  • Distributes the expedition agreements for students to obtain their guardians’ consent 81.
  • Explains the emergency wristbands before the group departs from Shanhai City’s docks for a seven-day survival trial beginning on October 1. She releases Wailord to transport the students, while other teachers provide a Flying-type escort 83.

Relationships

  • Ye Qing — Student and research contributor. Their relationship develops from her skepticism about his grades to mutual trust; he explicitly identifies her as someone he trusts during Professor Qian’s inquiry 32 34 47 48. She later disciplines him for sleeping in class while remaining willing to recognize his knowledge through an oral test 121 122. • Teacher Liu — The homeroom teacher she temporarily replaces. Liu briefs her on Ye Qing and Wang Yao’s poor academic records 31 32 33.
  • Ye Qing’s aunt — Former colleague at the same research institute; her connection helps establish Zhao Xinran’s credibility with Ye Qing 47 48.
  • Wang Yao — Student who proposes her as an impartial question-setter rather than allowing Zhang Qiang’s father to oversee the contest 34. His weak grasp of type matchups later prompts strict punishment motivated by concern for his safety 121 122. When they reunite after her studies abroad, she addresses him as Gym Leader Wang Yao 1041.
  • Huo Mengyao and Zhang Na — Class One students selected for the interclass battle alongside Ye Qing 36.
  • Zhang Zhihong — Vice principal whose decision she publicly challenges; he is wary of offending her influential parents 34.

  • Fujii Gongshu — Exchange student introduced to Class One. She regards his rivalry with Ye Qing as potentially beneficial and later accepts his proposal to lead the academy’s interschool team 74 75 127.
  • Morikawa Minako — Exchange student and member of the interschool battle team Zhao Xinran coaches alongside Fujii Gongshu and Ye Qing 127.
