Background / History
Ye Qing awakens in class after being struck by chalk and realizes that he has transmigrated into a world where humans and Pokémon have coexisted since ancient times. His family, friends, and appearance remain familiar, although he is younger than in his previous life. Knowledge retained from Pokémon anime and games immediately allows him to answer questions far beyond his reputation as the school's lowest-scoring student 1 2 3.
He attends Shanhai City's No. 1 Pokémon Academy, where annual tuition exceeds one hundred thousand yuan. His parents have struggled to fund his education, and his father, Ye Yuntian, borrows money for his first Pokémon. Believing that his younger sister's Pokémon education may be sacrificed for his own, Ye Qing resolves to earn enough to support the family 2 3.
After discovering his inspection ability at a Pokémon Day Care, he persuades his parents to visit an egg-gambling market. There he identifies a cracked, weakened Chimchar Egg with exceptional potential and chooses it despite warnings. Aunt Wang's Blissey treats the Egg, and Ye Qing researches Chimchar's care while tending its incubator until it hatches 3 4 5 6 7.
His maternal relatives belong to the Zhao family. His mother is the middle child, between Zhao Tianlai and Zhao Tian'ai; Zhao Ziran is his older cousin, while Ye Yunyin is revealed to be his younger cousin. His grandmother is a senior Breeder conducting research overseas. Before his rise, family gatherings frequently subject him to unfavorable comparisons with Zhao Ziran and leave his father marginalized 136 138.
After qualifying as a Professional Trainer, Ye Qing leaves home for a series of Gym challenges. His career expands into national and international competition, culminating in National Tournament and World Cup championships and later Elite Four membership 150 151 557 732 988.
His success transforms his family's circumstances and standing. He receives an estate as compensation for his contribution to Shanhai City, becomes the leading figure among his maternal relatives, and eventually reaches a position where money has little personal significance. A later side story identifies him as the founder of the Ye family in the history known to his descendant Ye Xingchen 323 877 1041 1046.
Appearance
Ye Qing retains his previous life's appearance, apart from looking younger 3.
- Facial features: Thick eyebrows, large eyes, and regular features; he considers himself handsome 3.
- Wrist mark: A glowing, spoon-shaped mark associated with his connection to Mewtwo 29 48.
- Undercover disguise: Wears Li Zhiyong's clothes and a Bat Mask, and singes his hair to match the borrowed identity 17.
- Darkrai's mark: Darkrai marks his right shoulder after helping awaken Wang Yao 801.
- Training-worn appearance: Three months of wilderness training leave his hair long and his clothing tattered enough that Yaoyao initially mistakes him for a beggar; he is startled by his own reflection afterward 858 859.
- Family resemblance: Ye Xingchen's eyebrows and eyes resemble his, which both Ye Qing and Su Yiqin notice before learning the boy's identity 1045 1046.
Personality
Ye Qing is strongly attached to his family. His mother's welcome moves him nearly to tears after transmigration, and his parents' financial sacrifices motivate him to improve their living conditions. He also promises to pay for Ye Menghan's Pokémon Academy education if she performs well on her entrance exam 2 3 7 8.
He combines moral courage with practical caution. Although he dislikes Wang Shuang, he intervenes when Zhang Qiang attacks him and his girlfriend, then relies on a recording bluff after assessing the opposing Pokémon. He accepts the resulting feud rather than regret standing up to bullying 30 31 34.
His confidence in Pokémon knowledge contrasts with his awareness of physical vulnerability. He recognizes that Pokémon attacks can kill him, learns that real battles differ from games, and seeks League protection when he fears Team R could locate his family. He also withholds information to preserve his privacy and bargaining value 11 19 46 49.
Ye Qing acknowledges his own self-interest rather than presenting himself as wholly altruistic. While sympathizing with Feebas's insecurity, he admits that knowing her future beauty and strength influenced his decision to catch her. Nevertheless, he tends carefully to his Pokémon's cleanliness, health, and emotional needs, and wants a larger home with suitable environments for all of them 65 74 211.
His loyalty to Wang Yao becomes a defining commitment. He regards Wang Yao's grievance against Luo Moyun as his own, urges his friend to wait for him before seeking revenge, and later seeks greater strength and public influence partly so that he can defend Wang Yao if his Team R identity is exposed. He is willing to oppose the Pokémon League rather than simply surrender him 485 486 694 740.
As his power grows, his response to enemies becomes increasingly ruthless. He is prepared to kill hostile bandits who attempt to murder him and recognizes that repeated conflicts with Gym Leaders and Elite Four Trainers have affected his attitude. Even so, he remains conscious of manners around family and elders and checks himself when he becomes disrespectful 760 877.
He understands that relationships and social position matter alongside battle strength. Although his relatives increasingly defer to him, he resists being made responsible for deciding Zhao Ziran's marriage and refuses to promise a championship merely to secure family advantage. He also finds the altered, deferential atmosphere among relatives and former teachers uncomfortable 510 511 512 529 701 1041.
By the later story, he feels the loneliness created by exceptional status. Zhao Xinran's respectful treatment reminds him that, even when he does not care about rank differences, others do; he reflects that worthy opponents can provide companionship unavailable elsewhere 1041.
Abilities & Skills
Pokémon Inspection
His unnamed “golden finger” displays detailed information about Pokémon and Eggs 3 5 6.
- Identifies species, level, potential, health, gender, typing, Ability, held items, and moves 3 6.
- Detects valuable Pokémon hidden among unidentified or damaged Eggs without specialist tools 4 5.
- Assesses opponents' injuries and strength, including an exhausted level 17 Fearow 11.
- Egg aptitude can remain uncertain during incubation: the first Magikarp Egg displays a range of F to F+ 3.
- Exposes concealed tactical options, such as a Jolteon's previously unused Thunderbolt 76.
- Allows him to reject inaccurate commercial estimates: he identifies an auctioned Totodile Egg as C− potential despite Su Yiqin's belief that it should reach at least B rank 185.
- Continues functioning on powerful and transformed Pokémon, displaying Bond Infernape's enhanced Fire Punch and base stat total, shiny Gabite's S+ potential, and a level 83 Leafeon's information 350 387 747.
- Remains useful despite his official Pokédex, which he considers largely unnecessary for identifying opponents because of his inspection ability 150.
Prior-Life Pokémon Knowledge
Ye Qing remembers information from Pokémon anime and games that is obscure or insufficiently researched in his new world 2 3 35.
- Answers questions about Abilities, evolution, moves, and gender restrictions 1 35.
- Identifies the Tao Trio and writes about Reshiram, Zekrom, and their Overdrive modes 35 48.
- Uses memories of Mewtwo's creation to help it understand its origins 25.
- Recognizes limits to his old knowledge: evolution and move-learning levels depend on nurturing, aptitude, and physical condition rather than fixed game thresholds 6.
- Distinguishes Kirlia's natural foresight from the move Future Sight and understands that such unusual capabilities can have severe energy costs 177.
- Incorporates further instruction from Morikawa Gym Leader, who emphasizes developing Pokémon's innate capabilities rather than relying only on levels, learned moves, or Mega Evolution 601.
- His knowledge is not infallible: an attempt to summon Celebi with the GS Ball fails, leaving five Genesect unable to return to their era 625.
Battle Tactics and Training
He adapts familiar mechanics to physical battles rather than treating combat as a direct copy of the games 19 39.
- Speed control: Has Chimchar grab Rattata after taking Quick Attack, preventing it from immediately retreating 10.
- Move disruption: Uses Fake Out to interrupt Dragon Dance and Encore to restrict Charmander to Scratch 39.
- Environmental exploitation: Orders Ember in every direction to ignite Charmander's flammable Smokescreen 39.
- Stamina management: Chooses Fury Swipes over Fire Punch against Charmander because Fire-type damage is resisted and Fire Punch is more exhausting 39.
- Counter Shield: Reconstructs Ash's spinning offensive-defensive technique using a Thomas Flair and Ember. The first attempt injures Chimchar, but later training makes him proficient 43 44 46.
- Teaching methods: Uses demonstrations, rewards, incremental practice, and running drills to help Chimchar execute moves 7 8 9 45.
- Growth regulation: Arranges a period of energy regulation for Ralts after Mewtwo's help produces unusually rapid advancement 135.
- Huge Power Slaking: Uses Gardevoir to transfer Azurill's Huge Power Ability to Slaking, then positions Gardevoir on Slaking's shoulder during battle 830.
- Psych Up strategy: Plans to have Milotic copy Gardevoir's fully accumulated Calm Mind boosts, and teaches Psych Up to Milotic, Diancie, and Gengar 796 798.
- Combination moves: Oversees Milotic's successful combination of Iron Tail and Water Pulse, while recognizing its longer preparation time; Gardevoir's attempt to combine Teleport and Calm Mind remains unsuccessful at that stage 604.
- Expanded move coverage: After the Elite Four Tournament exposes gaps in his team's options, he organizes targeted instruction and uses his privileges to obtain Trainer Association Pokémon as teachers 896.
- Intensive camps: Trains six Pokémon against five Genesect over three months, progressively changing the battle ratios. Later, he changes coaches and randomizes team combinations during a half-year island camp to prevent overfamiliarity with particular opponents 858 997.
Bond Phenomenon and Mega Evolution
Ye Qing's later battle strength includes both Infernape's Battle Bond transformation and Mega Evolution among his other partners 387 843.
- Bond Infernape: Infernape's inspected Ability is recorded as “Battle Bond (Ye Qing's Infernape),” with an enhanced Fire Punch and a base stat total of 644 387.
- Research significance: After his National Tournament victory, the Pokémon League requests a blood sample to investigate the Bond Phenomenon. He agrees in exchange for protection for his family 557.
- Dual Evolution: Can sustain two transformations simultaneously, but early practice leaves him physically and mentally exhausted after approximately five minutes 580.
- Endurance training: Repeated practice lengthens his simultaneous-evolution duration; he later deploys Bond Infernape and Mega Garchomp together against two Mega Charizard Y 604 843.
- Mega Gengar: Explicitly deploys Mega Gengar during his operations against Team R 934.
- Mega Milotic: His totem Milotic Mega Evolves under purple comet energy and senses Jirachi's presence during the transformation 1043.
- Legendary deployment: Can summon Mega Rayquaza by the later side story, using it to defeat the Legendary Pokémon guarding Su Yiqin's wedding 1043.
Wilderness Survival and Infiltration
His first two high-school years included extensive wilderness-survival training alongside Pokémon theory 16.
- Builds a campfire and applies medicine to Su Yiqin's injuries while stranded 12.
- Uses a landing roll to reduce impact and sketches a rough escape route through the burning forest 16.
- Maintains Blood Bat's cover through disguise, intelligence files, and improvisation; feigns collapse when he does not know which room belongs to his assumed identity 17 20 21.
- Destroys clothing and belongings after escaping Team R to reduce evidence linking him to the infiltration 29.
- Limitation: Cannot swim; Su Yiqin brings him toward the surface after he jumps into a river 12.
- Uses Kirlia's vision, weather information, and local geography to identify Dragon Soaring Villa District as an investigation site, then infiltrates with Pokémon assistance and watches Zhang Tingting's home from a tree 277.
- Obtains authorization to inspect the Qinling Mountains Giant Pokémon Research Center, questions unfamiliar staff, and compares historical and current maps while investigating suspected Team R activity 915.
- Conducts hit-and-run operations against Team R transport planes in the Lost World, while avoiding Moltres and Zapdos when necessary 935.
Legendary Aura Mark
The spoon-shaped mark on his wrist provides evidence for his claim of contact with a Legendary Pokémon 29 48.
- Glows visibly enough for a gatekeeper to notice it 29.
- Causes Professor Qian's level 50 Alakazam to scream and faint when it probes the mark with psychic power 48.
- Ye Qing does not demonstrate deliberate control over the mark's power during that examination 48.
- Reacts to the Confusion wave released by a newly uncovered Pokémon Egg. The resulting mingling of energies carries his consciousness into an unfamiliar space 94.
- Later possesses Mew's Mark, which he clutches during his confrontation with the Pokémon League 740.
- Receives a separate mark on his right shoulder from Darkrai after Wang Yao's awakening; no specific function is established in that scene 801.
Pokémon-Assisted Mobility and Support
Ye Qing frequently relies on his partners and Legendary friends for capabilities he does not personally possess 151 277 756.
- Uses Kirlia and later Gardevoir for teleportation, scouting, psychic support, and rapid returns home 277 368 430.
- Travels on Aerodactyl and Garchomp and plans to use Kyogre to reach Britain 277 859 942.
- Benefits from Kirlia's visions during investigations, though overuse can cause her to faint 177 277.
- Relies on Gengar to carry equipment and provisions; its storage cannot stop time or hold living creatures 661.
- Receives long-distance teleportation assistance from Mew, including transport home from a sunken-ship investigation and travel to Su Yiqin's wedding in America 756 1043.
- Coordinates Darkrai's nightmare ability to shock Wang Yao out of a months-long coma 801.

- Mewtwo — Friend whom Ye Qing calls “big bro.” Ye Qing shares memories of its origins and frees it from Team R; Mewtwo protects and teleports him to safety. - Arcanine — Li Zhiyong's Pokémon and temporary ally. Ye Qing treats and commands him during the infiltration; Arcanine refuses his invitation to become his Pokémon. They reunite later, when Ye Qing identifies him at level 41 in a weakened condition 18 28 29 216.
- Wang Yao — Best friend since childhood. Attempts to arrange Ye Qing's rescue, collects him after his escape, and defends the fairness of his knowledge contest. Ye Qing later treats his feud with Luo Moyun as his own, defends him against the League, and arranges Darkrai's help to awaken him from a coma. Future records remember Wang Yao as Ye Qing's closest brother 1 16 30 34 50 485 740 801 1046.

- Gible → Gabite → Garchomp — A shiny, exceptionally high-potential partner. Ye Qing first suspects the Egg's unusual coloration after cleaning; Gabite is later identified as a Flash Overlord with S+ potential. Garchomp becomes a mount and Mega Evolution partner 240 350 843 859.
- Aerodactyl — A partner used for travel and infiltration. Eventually prefers remaining at the research institute, where Ye Qing finds him overweight and enjoying a Swanna's company rather than wanting to resume traveling 277 285 368.
- Psyduck — A long-standing companion involved in household life and training. His psychic control later becomes sufficient to lift Aggron, and he is still supervising Garchomp's training when Ye Xingchen appears 151 529 896 1046.
