Background / History

Origin and Transformation

The Azure Emperor’s former incarnation was the Chaos Green Lotus, an Immortal King with profound karmic ties to the Desolate Heavenly Emperor. In his present life, he grew as an immortal Green Lotus atop the Green Cauldron in Kunlun’s Immortal Pool 27 34 41.

Luo Yan arrived before his transformation and guarded him for six years. When the lotus finally took human form, he declared his intention to attain the Dao as a Great Emperor. He left behind complete Immortal Medicine remains, which Luo Yan collected with his consent 34.

Recognizing that Kunlun’s conditions were unsuitable for his cultivation, Luo Yan erased the traces of his birth and took him to Demon Star. There, he would cultivate among the Demon Race while Luo Yan protected him against oppression by stronger elders 34.

Demon Star Trials

The Pan Niu Demon initially pretended to befriend him, then attempted to devour him for nourishment and longevity. The Azure Emperor escaped with grievous wounds and became his sworn enemy. Repeated battles forced him to grow rapidly, eventually attracting attention throughout White Tiger Holy City 35.

After winning the city’s Heavenly Prodigy Grand Tournament, he refused the White Tiger Demon Saint’s offer of discipleship, stating that he had already found his own Dao 37.

During a subsequent refining process, Immortal Medicine essence transferred into his cultivator body, while the Green Lotus lost its vitality. The Three Demon Sages and other experts then sought to divide and consume him. Luo Yan intervened, killed the attackers, and took him away from Demon Star 40 41.

Wan Qing on Big Dipper

On Big Dipper, he became known as Wan Qing. Following Luo Yan’s apparent death, many Demon Star experts began hunting him and allied with local demons. Others refused to betray him and became his followers 41.

His origins also drew the attention of Shen Ming, the son of an Immortal Mausoleum Supreme. Wan Qing wounded Shen Ming by summoning power from his former incarnation across spacetime. When the Supreme intervened, an aura associated with his guardian rose from him to oppose the attack 44 45.

Wan Qing subsequently perfected the Azure Emperor Art and entered the Starry Sky Ancient Road. During his travels, an Ancient Clan pursued him; he retaliated by secretly infiltrating it and carrying away both its Goddess and Divine Weapon 46 47 147.

Desolate Pagoda and the Imperial Throne

While seeking the Desolate Pagoda in an Emperor Mausoleum, Wan Qing was targeted for possession by the Red Demon Heavenly Venerable. A Time Mirror afterimage protected his sea of consciousness, allowing him to escape with the pagoda 56 57.

As a Great Saint, he intervened when the Primordial Myriad Races threatened Human Race territory. He exposed their earlier attempts to hunt him and declared that he had already refined all remaining Immortal Medicine essence into his cultivation foundation. The ensuing battle ended with five Great Saints slain and the Desolate Pagoda suppressing their weapons 62 63 64 66.

Nearly a thousand years after beginning cultivation, he attained the imperial throne in the Dharma-Ending Era. His first intention was to challenge Luo Yan, whom he blamed for deliberately creating many of his past dangers. Instead, he found his guardian gone and could no longer sense his Dao 67 68 69.

Believing he had lost his only elder, the Azure Emperor hunted down and tore apart the Red Demon Heavenly Venerable. He then repeatedly entered the Life Forbidden Zones, particularly the Undying Mountain, before all seven zones vanished from the Big Dipper Star Domain 69.

Return in the Present Era

The merger of the Demon Emperor’s Heart with the Green Lotus Emperor Weapon brought the Azure Emperor’s true presence into contact with the present world from inside the Desolate Pagoda. He recognized Luo Yan, revealing that he had left his tomb specifically to await their reunion after glimpsing part of the future 87.

He later emerged from the pagoda to confront the revived Red Demon Heavenly Venerable, whom he had long suspected was still alive. Their renewed battle lasted three days and ended in the Azure Emperor’s victory 194 195.

After providing Ye Fan and his companions with weapons and teachings, he traveled to Emperor City. He defeated Luo Tianlin to secure a meeting with Luo Yan, only to become the subject of the Luo Family elders’ matchmaking efforts. His identity was eventually recognized, and he publicly warned the Stone Emperor not to leave the Undying Mountain 195 196 197 200 201.

During the crisis on the Human Race Ancient Road, he crossed a World Gate and fought experts from another world. Later, he broke Luo Yan’s time-stopping technique to keep the Heavenly Road open. Despite his advancement to Quasi-Red Dust Immortal, his long-awaited attempt to settle accounts with Luo Yan ended in another beating 225 229 232 235.

He subsequently joined Luo Yan, Void Emperor, Emperor Hengyu, and Duan De in investigating a passage filled with dark matter and fallen creatures 238.

Appearance

  • Azure robes: His characteristic clothing, described as fluttering around an otherworldly, peerless figure when he emerges from the Desolate Pagoda 194.
  • Handsome, graceful bearing: His appearance and imposing stature lead the Luo Family elders to regard him as an ideal prospective son-in-law 195 196.
  • Lotus mark on his brow: Gives his face an uncanny charm 195.
  • Green Lotus manifestation: A vast lotus phantom appears behind him during his transformation and in early battles 34 41.

Personality

The Azure Emperor is determined to follow his own path. He willingly gave up an Immortal Medicine’s eternal life to cultivate, refused a Saint’s offer of discipleship, and repeatedly delayed advancement to perfect his foundations and cultivation art 34 35 37 46.

He is fearless toward enemies and openly contemptuous of those who exploit superior cultivation or status. His hostility toward the Primordial Myriad Races reflects both their persecution of him and their threats against humanity 62.

His relationship with Luo Yan combines deep affection with lasting resentment. He respects Luo Yan as his only elder, yet spends thousands of years seeking the strength to repay the “kindness” of a guardian who deliberately arranged dangerous trials. Their arguments are often comic, but Luo Yan’s disappearance leaves him genuinely grief-stricken 67 69 87 201.

He is generous toward juniors, distributing high-grade weapons and complete teachings, but quickly notices when recipients abuse that generosity. Ye Fan, Donkey, Black Emperor, and Dragon Horse all draw his complaints for taking more than their allotted gifts 195.
