Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient peak — complete soul and power | 29 53 117 | Stood unrivaled during Jujutsu Society’s golden age. His complete soul and power were subsequently divided equally among twenty fingers. |
| Twenty Special Grade Cursed Objects | 29 117 | Used a secret technique and binding vow as death approached, preserving his soul and cursed energy in his fingers. |
| Human incarnation — sixteen fingers’ power | 89 | Resurrected in a vessel selected by Kenjaku. The body could contain him but would shatter if he fully unleashed his available power. |
| Completed Incarnation Transformation Ritual | 110 113 117 | Accelerated the ritual through a binding vow and restored his original four-armed body. Entered battle with Kamutoke and Hiten, still lacking four fingers’ maximum output. |
| Cursed spirit incarnation — four fingers’ power | 155 | Established a binding vow with a dying finger-bearing cursed spirit and took control of its body. Retained his advanced techniques despite sharply reduced output. |
| Reversion to four cursed objects | 157 162 | Abandoned the cursed spirit body before Mahoraga could erase him. His consciousness survived within the four fingers subsequently collected by Chinatsu. |
Background / History
Sukuna lived a thousand years before the modern story, during Jujutsu Society’s golden age. Despite his demonic appearance, he was a real human curse user. He was reputed to have single-handedly subdued the era’s jujutsu society, earning recognition as the strongest person recorded in history 29 53.
During one carefully prepared encirclement, most of the era’s powerful fighters attempted to kill him. Sukuna killed every participating sorcerer, leaving no survivors. He also fought Yamata no Orochi, whose troublesome nature he later recalled when confronting Mahoraga 119 156.
His reputation extended beyond jujutsu society: even some ordinary people knew the legend of the four-armed, two-faced Phantom God 89.
Appearance
- Original body: Burly build, two faces, four eyes, four arms, and a fanged mouth on his abdomen 89 113.
- Initial modern incarnation: Eerie black markings appeared across his host’s body; his hands could transform into sharp, beastlike claws 89.
- Cursed spirit form: Reshaped his host into a deformed humanoid with two faces and four arms 155.
- Cursed objects: His surviving fingers are grotesquely shaped and retain his consciousness and cursed energy 29 157 162.
Personality
Sukuna is cruel, bloodthirsty, and driven entirely by his own desires. He treats the deaths of humans and cursed spirits alike as potential entertainment, rather than showing solidarity with either group. He regards weak people as existing to amuse the strong and criticizes Chinatsu for exhausting herself to protect civilians 89 114.
Powerful opponents interest him as “playthings.” His enthusiasm for fighting Chinatsu and Satoru coexists with arrogance, mocking commentary, and confidence that he can ignore Kenjaku’s schemes. He nevertheless listens when Kenjaku warns him about modern threats and recognizes when his vessel cannot support a serious battle 89 115 117.
His enjoyment of death is strictly one-sided. When genuinely threatened, he is willing to flee or abandon a body rather than die for his pride. His defeats by the Gojo siblings become a source of psychological trauma, anger, and impaired judgment during his later confrontation with Mahoraga 130 132 155 156 157.
Sukuna is also a cannibal with particular preferences. Although he can prepare human flesh himself, he is not a skilled cook; Uraume’s cooking is the quality he appreciates most in his servant 132.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Energy and Physical Combat
- Possesses exceptionally large cursed energy reserves; even without four fingers, his reserves are described as the greatest in the story 117.
- Uses all four arms in close combat, supplementing punches with kicks whenever openings appear 117.
- Can form hand signs with two hands while continuing to fight with the others. His unusual anatomy also permits uninterrupted incantations to strengthen technique output 115.
- His finger count limits maximum output and soul completeness, not his range of techniques or level of mastery. Even one finger’s power would allow him to expand a domain 156.
Dismantle and Cleave
- Dismantle: Projects razor-sharp slashes capable of cutting trees, buildings, and opposing attacks. Incantations can strengthen its output 115 120 155 156.
- Cleave: Demonstrated through direct palm contact with Mahoraga, producing a web of slashing wounds 156.
- Can release dense networks of slashes to escape confinement, as when he pulverizes rubble gathered around him by Chinatsu’s Blue 115.
- Both techniques are incorporated into Malevolent Shrine 120.
- At four-finger strength, neither technique delivers enough damage to stop Mahoraga before it adapts 156.
Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine
- An open domain manifested around a grotesque shrine and skeletal remains, without an enclosing outer shell 118.
- Exchanges confinement for a much greater effective range than an ordinary closed domain. Its lack of an outer shell also removes the usual vulnerability of a breakable barrier 118.
- Unleashes relentless Dismantle and Cleave attacks throughout its range, targeting everything except Sukuna 118 120.
- Allows Sukuna to actively aim slashes rather than relying solely on the guaranteed-hit effect 119.
- Its parameters can be adjusted through advanced domain manipulation and binding vows. Against Mahoraga, he reduces its radius to one hundred meters and concentrates output on the shikigami 156.
- Can be resisted temporarily with Simple Domain or Falling Blossom Emotion, and overwhelmed by a stronger domain clash 118 119 132.
Domain Amplification
- Covers his body with a neutralizing domain layer, allowing close-range attacks and Hiten to breach Chinatsu’s Limitless Defense 115 116.
- Also neutralizes opposing cursed techniques defensively. Sukuna uses it to survive the siblings’ Hollow Purple-Unrestricted, though the blast still destroys all four arms 129.
- Conventional ranged attacks remain unable to penetrate Limitless Defense merely because he is using amplification 116.
- Domain Amplification ordinarily prevents simultaneous use of the user’s innate cursed technique 34.
Furnace: Open
- Creates a flaming arrow while Sukuna adopts a bow-drawing stance 156.
- His Flame Arrow clashes with Chinatsu’s Hollow Purple during their prolonged battle 128.
- Against Mahoraga, the arrow explodes into a tornado of flame and ignites the surrounding forest, but fails to destroy the adapted shikigami 156.
Reverse Cursed Technique
- Rapidly repairs injuries, including damage from Chinatsu’s amplified Red and Black Flash 115 118.
- Restores his heavily wounded body after Hollow Purple-Unrestricted 129 130.
- Sustained combat still degrades healing output, concentration, and domain precision. By the end of his fight with Satoru, he can no longer activate the technique successfully 132.
Soul Preservation, Incarnation, and Binding Vows
- Preserved his soul and power across twenty fingers through a secret technique and binding vow 29 117.
- Remains conscious inside an innate domain while existing as cursed objects and can perceive the outside world through his fingers 89 162 171.
- Deepening incarnation can transform a human host into his original body; his inadequate modern vessel required a special ritual 89 110.
- Gains access to his human host’s knowledge, allowing him to understand modern references 116.
- Uses binding vows to accelerate transformation, adjust domain parameters, and obtain control of a cursed spirit’s body 113 155 156.
- His temporary cursed spirit body is vulnerable to positive energy. Mahoraga’s Sword of Extermination would be lethal to that form even at twenty-finger strength 156 157.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kamutoke — A vajra-like cursed tool whose true ability is to alter the properties of Sukuna’s cursed energy at will. Its lightning comes from giving his energy an electrical nature; a blade-like property lets his punches cut Chinatsu. Kenjaku cannot locate the original and turns to Yorozu’s Construction Technique to supply it 115 116 117.
- Hiten — A trident-like cursed tool granting high-speed movement and free flight, but not travel into outer space. It also carries a slashing technique. Kenjaku purchases it from a remote collector and returns it to Sukuna 115 116 117 120.
- Sukuna’s Fingers — Twenty Special Grade Cursed Objects containing equal portions of his soul and power. A single finger can produce a special-grade cursed spirit when swallowed; ordinary humans instead risk fatal poisoning or bodily destruction 29 78 117.
Relationships
- Uraume — Loyal servant from a thousand years earlier. Guards Sukuna’s transformation ritual, cooks for him, and sacrifices himself to intercept Chinatsu’s amplified Hollow Purple 82 110 120 132.
- Kenjaku — Resurrection partner and uneasy ally. Needs Sukuna against the Gojo siblings, while Sukuna knowingly tolerates her schemes without trusting her motives 66 89 117 130.
- Chinatsu Gojo — Powerful opponent whose potential he noticed while she examined one of his fingers. Their battle exposes the limits of his superiority and leaves him determined to take revenge 89 119 155 162.
- Satoru Gojo — Opponent who joins Chinatsu’s assault, defeats Malevolent Shrine with Unlimited Void, and destroys Sukuna’s sixteen-finger incarnation 129 132 133.
- Yuji Itadori — Artificial vessel created by Kenjaku. Unlike ordinary hosts, Yuji can suppress Sukuna’s consciousness while awake; Chinatsu prevents his abduction and rejects sacrificing him to eliminate Sukuna 78 82 83.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Natural vessel coveted for his compatibility and Ten Shadows Technique. Sukuna attempts to pursue him after returning at four-finger strength 110 155.
- Yorozu — Ancient sorcerer obsessively in love with Sukuna, whom he considers a potentially useful spare pawn 88.
- Hajime Kashimo — Ancient challenger who accepted future incarnation in exchange for a battle with Sukuna. Kenjaku redirects him toward Satoru instead 101.
- Mahoraga — Megumi’s supreme shikigami. Adapts to Sukuna’s attacks and forces him to abandon his cursed spirit incarnation 156 157.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Resurrection
- Kenjaku spends years collecting fingers and plans to force Yuji into becoming Sukuna’s host. Hanami’s failed abduction prevents that approach 68 78 82.
- Sukuna instead awakens in a former office worker’s body with sixteen fingers’ power. After learning about Chinatsu and Satoru, he agrees to delay fighting until his fragile vessel is transformed 88 89.
- Uraume guards the transformation ritual. After Chinatsu defeats Uraume, Sukuna accelerates its completion and emerges in his original body with both cursed tools 110 113.
Battles Against the Gojo Siblings
- Chinatsu withstands Malevolent Shrine, studies its structure, and develops an open version of her own domain. Mirror Flower, Water Moon overwhelms Sukuna’s senses; Uraume’s sacrifice saves him from the ensuing Hollow Purple 118 119 120.
- Satoru joins Chinatsu, and their coordinated Hollow Purple-Unrestricted blows off all four of Sukuna’s arms. Kenjaku separates the siblings long enough for him to heal and reopen Malevolent Shrine 129 130.
- Satoru transforms Unlimited Void into an open domain. Sukuna’s accumulated fatigue prevents him from winning the clash, and Satoru intercepts his attempted escape with Hiten 131 132.
- Unlimited Void incapacitates him, followed by Satoru’s Black Flash. Satoru then destroys his body with an incantation-enhanced Red 132 133.
Four-Finger Return
- A Gojo Clan satellite holding the remaining fingers loses contact after a meteor shower. Both Jujutsu High schools mobilize to recover the four missing objects 151 152.
- A cursed spirit swallows all four. As Megumi and Nobara nearly defeat it, Sukuna takes control through a binding vow and pursues Megumi as a prospective vessel 153 155.
- Megumi summons Mahoraga. Sukuna’s slashes, domain, and flaming arrow fail to destroy it, forcing him to revert to fingers before the Sword of Extermination strikes 156 157.
- After defeating Mahoraga, Chinatsu collects the fingers. Sukuna recognizes her improved control over cursed energy and postpones his revenge plans 162.
