Background / History

Tang Yu was originally a modern fan of Journey to the West. Angered after reading that the pilgrimage was a scheme for Buddhism and Taoism to compete for destiny, he threw his charging phone and was electrocuted. He awakened in the body of Tang Sanzang, who had died from fright after encountering a tiger, and received a System that rewards him for plundering the destiny of sects. 1

Although he possesses Tang Sanzang's memories, Tang Yu rejects the role expected of him. At Five Finger Mountain, he deliberately rides away from the imprisoned Sun Wukong, earning 100,000 Destiny Points and a Human Immortal Cultivation Card for disrupting the Buddhist Sect's arrangements. The Golden Head Guardian ultimately frees Sun Wukong, who voluntarily kneels and becomes Tang Yu's disciple. 1 3

Tang Yu quickly becomes a destabilizing force in the pilgrimage. He openly eats meat, drinks alcohol, smokes cigarettes, orders Sun Wukong to kill bandits, trades his kasaya for food and wine, and refuses to treat the Buddhist Sect's planned tribulations with reverence. His actions repeatedly leave Tathagata Buddha and Guanyin unable to keep the journey on its intended path. 4 5 9

After being accidentally buried and killed during Sun Wukong's drunken rampage, Tang Yu is resurrected through the Buddhist Sect's Nine-Turn Golden Elixir. The incident confirms his belief that his identity as the scripture seeker makes him too important for the Buddhist Sect to discard. 10 11

He later turns Guanyin's Golden Fillet against the Black Bear Spirit rather than using it on Sun Wukong, exposing its purpose as a control device. His decision helps Sun Wukong recognize the Buddhist Sect's intentions and strengthens their mutual opposition to manipulation. 10 12 13

Tang Yu develops a relationship with Gao Cuilan at Gao Family Village and accepts Zhu Bajie as a disciple only after making clear that Gao Cuilan is his partner. Though he repeatedly insists that he does not want to travel west, the Buddhist Sect forces the pilgrimage to continue. 19 20 21

Personality

Tang Yu is pragmatic, irreverent, and intensely self-interested. He sees the westward journey as a political struggle between Buddhism and Taoism rather than a sacred mission, and regards himself and his disciples as pieces on a larger chessboard. His primary goal is to seize enough destiny and power to escape that role. 1 7 47

He is brazenly defiant toward authority. Tang Yu refuses to kneel to Guanyin, speaks to Bodhisattvas and kings without deference, and openly declares that becoming a Buddha holds no appeal for him. 6 21 50

Despite his cynical behavior, Tang Yu is capable of loyalty and concern toward those he considers his own. The Black Bear Spirit Incident

Gao Family Village
