Background / History

Zhu Bajie was once Marshal Tianpeng, commander of the Heavenly River’s hundred thousand water troops. He was banished to the mortal realm for allegedly harassing Chang’e while drunk, though he maintains that he never even met her. His reincarnation went wrong, leaving him in a pig’s body. He believes that the Heavenly Court abandoned him as part of a larger arrangement surrounding the scripture pilgrimage. 15 18 27

At Gao Family Village, Zhu Bajie rescued Gao Cuilan from bandits and became the Gao family’s son-in-law. He worked diligently for the household, but revealed his pig form while drunk. Rejected for his appearance, he abducted Cuilan and confined her for three years. 16

Taishang Laojun visited Zhu Bajie at Yun Zhan Cave and told him that Sun Wukong and the scripture pilgrim were approaching. Zhu Bajie recognized Wukong as the monkey who had twice caused havoc in Heaven and understood that the pilgrimage had been arranged in advance. 15

After confronting Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie returned to Gao Family Village and formally joined Tang Yu as a disciple. Tang Yu renamed him Zhu Bajie and made clear that Gao Cuilan was now Tang Yu’s wife. Zhu Bajie accepted the arrangement despite his resentment. 18 20

Appearance

Zhu Bajie is a pig-bodied demon whose appearance is widely regarded as ugly and monstrous. His former identity as the imposing Marshal Tianpeng sharply contrasts with his current form. 15 16

Personality

Zhu Bajie often presents himself as simple-minded, greedy, and easily tempted by food, women, and leisure. He eagerly accepts Tang Yu’s promise to visit brothels and is readily distracted by Old Mother Lishan’s disguised daughters. 22 35 36

Behind this behavior, he is more perceptive than he appears. Tang Yu recognizes that Zhu Bajie could not have become Marshal Tianpeng if he were truly foolish, and Zhu Bajie understands that he, Sun Wukong, and Tang Yu were selected for their merit and used as pieces in a larger struggle. 21 27 37

His banishment left him bitter toward the Heavenly Court. He speaks with pain about being discarded despite his former service, while also implying that some memories and secrets surrounding Sun Wukong are better left forgotten. 27

As Tang Yu’s second disciple, Zhu Bajie travels alongside Sun Wukong and participates in Tang Yu’s increasingly unorthodox conduct. He finds the idea of a scripture pilgrim leading disciples to brothels ironic, but also looks forward to it. 22 23

Spirit Mountain Rampage and Resurrection

The Nine-Colored Bewitching Flower’s pistil drives Zhu Bajie into madness. He flies to Spirit Mountain, loots the Buddhist treasure vault, and causes destruction with stolen artifacts. Tathagata kills him by accident while stopping him; Samantabhadra later restores him and sends him back to the group. 38 39 41

White Bone Ridge

After returning, Zhu Bajie boasts that he fought Tathagata Buddha. He remains with the group during the White Bone Demon incidents and is used by Tang Yu as a distraction against Bai Jingjing. 41 45 46
