Background

Sun Wukong spent five hundred years suppressed beneath Five Finger Mountain after causing havoc in Heaven. Guanyin had told him that a scripture-seeker would free him and that he would escort this monk west, so he anxiously called for Tang Yu when he arrived. Tang Yu initially refused to release or accept him, leaving the Golden Head Guardian to activate the Buddhist seal and free Wukong instead. Wukong then knelt and became Tang Yu's disciple. 1 2 3

He identifies himself as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven and remembers his second life: emerging from stone, crossing the Eastern Sea, studying under Patriarch Bodhi, and later challenging Heaven. However, he repeatedly senses that part of his past is missing. Zhu Bajie recalls that Wukong had an earlier life whose primordial spirit nearly shattered before a trace of consciousness became stone, while Taishang Laojun implies that Wukong's forgotten history is better left buried. 10 12 15 18

His origins are tied to the Five-Colored Stones used by Nuwa to mend the heavens. Taishang Laojun states that many fragments remained, but Wukong alone became an anomaly capable of cultivation; he also provides Tang Yu with another fragment intended to be useful to both of them. 7 12

Appearance

Sun Wukong is a pitch-black monkey with a hairy face and a “thunder-god’s mouth.” His appearance routinely alarms ordinary people, who mistake him for a monster on sight. 3 15

Personality

Wukong is proud, blunt, and fond of proclaiming his former title and exploits. He readily boasts that demons will flee at the mention of his name, a habit Tang Yu finds irritating. 3 15

Despite his pride, he is intensely responsive to Tang Yu's orders and protects him as his master. He kills the bandit leader without hesitation when commanded, searches for food on Tang Yu's request, and immediately tries to recover Tang Yu after the Yellow Wind King abducts him. 5 6 24

His obedience does not extend to the Buddhist Sect. Learning that the Golden Fillet was meant to enslave him deepens his hostility toward Buddhism; while drunk, he attacks Guanyin and later admits his dissatisfaction with the sect's control. 10 11 12
