Power Progression
Marcus’s advancement is demonstrated through his control of Digisoul and the forms he unlocks for Agumon, rather than a named cultivation realm.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Digisoul activation → GeoGreymon | 186 | Punching Woodpeckermon ignites Marcus’s willpower. He transfers the resulting Digisoul to Agumon, enabling GeoGreymon to fight alongside MachGaogamon. |
| Full Charge → RizeGreymon, Ultimate | 198 | After learning how his father used Digisoul to alter the land, Marcus recognizes its connection to the Digimon World. He transfers all his Digisoul to Agumon and unlocks RizeGreymon. |
| Beyond-the-Limit Charge → ShineGreymon, Mega | 216 217 | Marcus swallows a power-bearing pebble from Zheng Fan and suffers severe burning. Agumon accepts both his power and his determination, achieving “entangled digivolution” into ShineGreymon. |
| Digisoul Burst → ShineGreymon Burst Mode | 222 | Marcus pours fresh energy into ShineGreymon, gaining shape-changing energy weapons capable of cracking the Aegis of Avalon. The expenditure leaves Marcus on his knees. |
| Shared Digisoul flight and replacement hand | 235 236 | Agumon manifests Digisoul wings with the same power associated with ShineGreymon’s Burst Mode. He then transfers that energy to Marcus, forming a burning left hand that remains afterward. |
Background / History
Marcus is the son of Gate English and Sayuri, and Chika’s older brother. Sayuri was formerly the eldest daughter of the Sumitomo family, but her father stripped her of the family surname after she married an amateur researcher. Without the family’s protection, the Damon household depended on Gate English’s exceptional fighting ability for its safety 196.
Marcus became an experienced street fighter. When he first entered school, he defeated Sheng, who had held the position of school “top dog” for three consecutive years. Sheng disappeared afterward and later resurfaced as one of Kurata’s technological weapons 198. Despite Marcus’s growing combat power, the confrontation with his father’s possessed body makes clear that he is still a fourteen-year-old middle school student 230.
Appearance
- Left-arm loss: By Chapter 234, Marcus has only his right hand remaining; Chapter 235 explicitly identifies his left arm as missing 234 235.
- Digisoul replacement: Agumon’s energy forms a burning left hand within Marcus’s empty sleeve. Zheng Fan later disguises it to look like an ordinary hand, though Marcus can still feel the flames inside it 235 236.
- Battle injuries: After Belphemon strikes him, Marcus returns with shredded clothes and a bloodied body, yet remains able to fight 226 227.
Personality
Marcus initially treats fists as a better solution than explanation. He attacks while opponents are talking, ignores retreat orders, and boasts that even powerful Digimon will “get a taste” of his fists. His confidence rises sharply after Agumon reaches Mega, despite repeated defeats demonstrating the limits of his strength 186 191 218.
His aggression is closely tied to loyalty and protectiveness. Fear that DATS will force Chika into its combat division drives his conflict with Biyomon, who also wants to protect her. Marcus lends Thomas his own clothes after Thomas’s uniform is destroyed, lowers his fist when he notices Zheng Fan’s weakness, and acknowledges that his reckless charge into gunfire endangered his companions 187 190 191 194.
Marcus can also doubt himself. While injured and believing Thomas has returned from the Underworld, he admits that he can only wreck things and asks Thomas to help ShineGreymon in his place 222. Later, an encounter with a supposedly criminal Helmeted Man teaches him that appearances can conceal a protective motive. By Chapter 262, he asks both sides of a dispute to explain themselves before intervening 262.
Others often see him as a delinquent, but the narration emphasizes his willingness to help trusted friends at any cost. His later restraint is not complete passivity: during a disagreement with Oura’s group, he suppresses the urge to attack them and leaves instead 266.
Abilities & Skills
Digisoul
Marcus converts willpower into visible energy that strengthens both himself and Agumon 186.
- Unusual activation: Unlike DATS members whose pure willpower is readily visible, Marcus’s willpower normally remains unseen. Contact with a Digimon can ignite it into Digisoul 186.
- Minimal contact can suffice: He lightly taps Takuya after Takuya becomes Agunimon, generating enough Digisoul to evolve Agumon 203.
- Physical effects: Marcus feels Digisoul’s heat and identifies it as energy connected to the Digimon World, capable of affecting that world 198.
- Resistance to control: Burning Digisoul unravels the World Tree’s immobilizing punishment, allowing Marcus to regain control of his body 233.
- Large-scale support: Together with Thomas, Yoshino, and Yuto, he projects Digisoul upward to help hold the two worlds apart 234.
- Digi-Egg reversion: A Digimon defeated by his Digisoul-powered fists returns directly to a Digi-Egg, allowing it to hatch again rather than remain destroyed 263.
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Marcus relies on punches, physical conditioning, and experience from street brawls 191 233.
- Fights Biyomon directly and closes on Hawkmon while dodging a rain of kunai 191.
- Prevents a fatal fall from the Signal Tower by hooking his foot over a crossbar 191.
- Cracks an alloy wall with a punch and later breaks binding ropes through muscular force 195 197.
- Helps shatter SkullMeramon’s Aegis of Avalon after Thomas identifies the weakness in its governing order 222 223.
- Delivers the Digisoul-clad punch that destroys Belphemon 229.
- Limits: His early attacks cannot meaningfully harm Zheng Fan or Mercurymon. Belphemon’s Dark Lullaby renders him unconscious 187 191 224.
Partner Empowerment
Marcus channels Digisoul through his Digivice to evolve Agumon, eventually reaching ShineGreymon Burst Mode 186 217 222.
- Digisoul helps heal ShineGreymon’s wound and increase his strength during the SkullMeramon battle 222.
- Marcus and Agumon coordinate physical attacks, aerial movement, and direct assaults on the World Tree 235.
- Energy cost: Burst Mode leaves Marcus physically weakened; a later shared Burst assault leaves the human partners unable to stand 222 234.
- Evolution suppression: A Dark Tower prevents Agumon from evolving, even when Marcus attempts Mega Evolution 262.
Spatial Passage Use
Marcus uses his partner’s attacks or specialized equipment to travel between worlds 202 262.
- Senses a wound in the world and directs RizeGreymon to blast it open with Digisoul-wrapped missiles 202.
- Uses a Dimension Bomb to create an escape passage before Kimeramon self-destructs 262.
- Cannot independently use the Chosen Children’s computer-gate method. Izzy promises to help improve passage technology in Marcus’s world 263.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Dimension Bomb — Opens the escape passage used during Kimeramon’s impending self-destruction 262.
- Identification and DATS certification — Presented to establish his identity and authority when meeting another group of Chosen Children 262.
- Mediator insignia — Given to him by the World Tree; identifies an organization dedicated to resolving disputes between Digimon 262.
- Royal Honor Knight Crest — Presented as evidence of his Royal Knights connection 262.
- Calumon’s talismans — Temporary external support that shields Marcus from bullets, heals his gunshot wound, and enhances his abilities 194.
- Zheng Fan’s pebble — A dangerous power source consumed during the breakthrough to ShineGreymon 216 217.
- Night Dawn Sword — Briefly used as a means of catching up with the fleeing Crystal Maiden; Marcus grabs it, then releases it to deliver his final punch 235.
Relationships
- Agumon — Partner who calls Marcus “Boss.” Their shared willingness to endure the cost of greater power enables ShineGreymon’s debut; Agumon later supplies the Digisoul that replaces Marcus’s left hand 186 217 235.
- Chika Damon — Younger sister. Marcus’s determination to protect her brings him into conflict with Biyomon and influences his support for Thomas’s plan to relieve Earth 190 191 206.
- Sayuri — Mother. She insists that Marcus stop drawing Chika into danger and is devastated when both children disappear 192 202.
- Gate English / BanchoLeomon — Father. Gate English’s body is controlled by the World Tree, while his soul controls BanchoLeomon. Seeing Marcus hurt ultimately causes his body to resist the World Tree 230 233.
- Thomas — DATS colleague and intellectual foil. Thomas learns from Marcus’s practical approach, later returns to revive him, and builds the SkullMeramon battle plan around his power 187 200 222.
- Zheng Fan — Teacher, initially met with suspicion and punches. He teaches Marcus about Digisoul, supplies the pebble used for his Mega breakthrough, and disguises his replacement hand 194 198 216 236.
- Yoshino — DATS colleague who repeatedly challenges his recklessness. Her medicine is used by Thomas to revive Marcus during the SkullMeramon battle 187 222 225.
- Yuto — Initially mistakes Marcus for a Digimon poacher. They later fight together, and Marcus objects when Oremon tries to remove Yuto from the Holy City 186 195 198.
- Biyomon — Chika’s partner. Their shared protective intent initially produces a violent dispute over Chika’s safety and Biyomon’s place in the Human World 190 191.
- Mercurymon — Initially an overwhelming opponent; later explains the possession of Gate English’s body and the location of his soul 191 230.
- Kurata — Enemy responsible for experiments on Digimon and the campaign against the Digimon World. Marcus confronts him over both the war and his captive DATS personnel 195.
- Oura — Later acquaintance whose approach to rebuilding the Digimon World conflicts with Marcus’s; their disagreement ends with Marcus leaving 266.
Story Role / Major Arcs
DATS Mission and First Encounter with Zheng Fan
- Marcus and Thomas enter Rosemon’s territory while pursuing Drillmon. Yuto accuses them of poaching, leading to a fight that exposes their use of Digisoul; Calumon ends it by devolving the combatants 186.
- Drillmon’s contaminated Digi-Egg reveals a wider threat to the Human World. Marcus’s punch fails against Zheng Fan, but jointly persuading Yuto gives the three humans a preliminary understanding of one another 187.
- Marcus returns through the Portal and is immediately confined in a DATS restraint device. After the mission, he calmly acknowledges having seen true strength and resolves to improve 187 188.
Protecting Chika and Exposing Kurata
- Chika’s bond with Biyomon raises the possibility of her recruitment into DATS’s combat division. Marcus tries to send Biyomon back to the Digimon World, fights Hawkmon, and refuses Satsuma’s order to retreat from Mercurymon 190 191.
- Marcus subsequently says he is no longer a government employee and intends to use his fists to prevent anyone from bullying Chika 192.
- He accuses Zheng Fan of manipulating his thinking. Zheng Fan explains the influence of the Salvation Sutra before sending him, Chika, Yuto, and Calumon to retrieve Teacher Obokata 194.
- Marcus’s premature charge into the gang’s base exposes him to gunfire. With Calumon’s protection, he defeats the guards and interrogates their commander, leading the group deeper into Kurata’s laboratory 194 195.
Holy City Defense and the War Between Worlds
- Stranded in the Digimon World, Marcus encounters Digimon ordered to eliminate human intruders. Yuto and Chika wake to find GeoGreymon massacring Rookie and In-Training attackers; Marcus’s claim that Kurata is the true enemy fails to persuade them, while Yuto’s standing with Mercurymon secures their withdrawal 196 197.
- The Holy City confirms Marcus and Chika as Gate English’s children. Baromon’s account of their father’s Digisoul inspires Marcus’s breakthrough to RizeGreymon, allowing him to help repel Kurata’s Kudamon army 198.
- Marcus escapes BioDarkdramon’s pursuit through a damaged boundary between worlds and meets Takuya’s group. He identifies himself as a DATS member and demonstrates partner evolution before joining the effort around Golgomon 202 203.
- For Chika’s sake, he supports Thomas’s proposal to connect two Digimon Worlds and give Earth a respite. Thomas enters the passage alone and sacrifices himself to the resulting black hole 206.
Mega Evolution and the World Tree’s Defenders
- After Zheng Fan stops the spatial breach from expanding, Marcus consumes the pebble he is given without waiting to prepare. The resulting ordeal culminates in ShineGreymon’s first appearance 216 217.
- Marcus seeks the World Tree at World Mountain. SkullMeramon blocks the route and defeats his initial assault, but Thomas’s return enables a coordinated attack and Marcus’s first use of Burst Mode 221 222.
- Marcus’s fists and the allied Digimon’s attacks destroy the Aegis of Avalon. Thomas stops the battle once SkullMeramon’s defensive obligation has ended 223.
Belphemon and the World Tree
- Belphemon initially puts Marcus and Agumon to sleep with Dark Lullaby. Marcus later rejoins the battle despite severe injuries and ultimately destroys Belphemon with a Digisoul-powered punch 224 227 229.
- Marcus strikes the World Tree and discovers his father’s face beneath its cloak. Mercurymon reveals the division between Gate English’s possessed body and the soul controlling BanchoLeomon 230.
- Marcus burns through the World Tree’s controlling power. During the ensuing fight, his blood prompts Gate English’s body to reject its controller; BanchoLeomon carries Marcus to safety before embracing Gate English in the explosion that follows 233.
- Marcus rejects the claim that humanity merely pollutes Digimon and helps support the two worlds with Digisoul. He and Agumon then destroy the World Tree’s body, pursue its Crystal Maiden form, and shatter her with his newly formed left fist 234 235.
Reconstruction and Travel to Other Worlds
- Marcus wants to visit the Digimon World, but Agumon reminds him that Earth still needs their help until civilization stabilizes 236.
- On a later journey, Marcus and Agumon save a city from invading Titans. Hostility toward ShineGreymon’s appearance and the damage to the city walls eventually turns the local population against them, forcing Marcus to leave after further clashes 263.
- He meets another group of Chosen Children, attempts to mediate their dispute, and leads them away from Kimeramon’s self-destruction 262.
- Interested in their less destructive gate technology, he seeks a safer alternative to the energy-intensive passages used in his homeland 263.
- During reconstruction, Marcus pushes the front forward while Oura focuses on hauling bricks. Their disagreement separates them; Marcus and Zheng Fan also reject a direct attack through the Great Vortex 266.
