Background / History

Early Anbu service and encounters with Naruto

Fugaku took Itachi to a battlefield during his childhood, exposing him to the cruelty of war. By his early encounters with Naruto, Itachi had already joined the Anbu. He knew that Konoha’s leadership opposed contact between the Uchiha and the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, so he initially avoided investigating Naruto 26 77.

Their first meeting occurs when Naruto bumps into him outside a dango shop. Itachi gently helps Naruto up, restrains an angry Sasuke after Naruto takes his dango, and treats the skewer as a gift 16.

After witnessing Zeff’s strength through Naruto’s shadow clone, Itachi lures a giant wild boar into the training area to test Naruto further. He observes the Six Powers and Armament Haki, interprets Zeff as a separate personality, and decides not to report the apparent condition to the Third Hokage 25 26 27.

The Virtual Headset project

Shisui brings Itachi into Naruto’s Metaverse plan. Itachi proposes promoting Virtual Headsets as a way to awaken the Sharingan: their emotional stimulation could appeal to both Uchiha political factions while giving the clan an outlet for its frustrations with Konoha 63.

He escorts Naruto into the Uchiha compound, kicks aside Uchiha Ming when Ming refuses to admit their guest, and shows Naruto a three-story building suitable for an experience center. Fugaku initially opposes the business because of Naruto’s identity and the risk of surveillance, but agrees to consult the elders after Itachi explains its potential to awaken the Sharingan 64.

Itachi later watches Naruto’s simulated clan massacre awaken Ryūichi’s and Makoto’s Sharingan. He reacts with hostility before Naruto explains the simulation’s purpose. The apparent “Itachi” who delivers an unexpected romantic confession about Sasuke is actually Kushina playing a virtual character, not Itachi himself 68.

Adoption of Red Thought

Naruto’s psychological test exposes Itachi’s willingness to sacrifice innocents for outcomes he considers justified. He chooses to kill one passerby to provide organs for five patients and, in another scenario, kills an innocent family to save a hostage Sasuke. Itachi disputes the test’s reliability rather than accepting that those choices were wrong 75.

Reading Naruto’s Red Books changes his political outlook. He begins identifying ordinary people—not ninja, nobles, or daimyo—as the foundation of society. He also connects warfare to control over resources and decides to investigate how civilians actually live outside Konoha 77 81.

His Mangekyō training initially fails because he knows Naruto’s tragedies are virtual. Naruto succeeds by staging an apparent return to reality followed by a Blood Release Ninja attack. Believing Shisui has sacrificed himself and been blown apart, Itachi stabilizes his Mangekyō Sharingan before learning that neither man ever left the simulation 83 84 85 86.

Building the revolutionary movement

Itachi and Shisui travel through the Land of Fire, finding increasingly severe poverty away from Konoha. Their attempts to teach ideology fail among villagers concerned only with obtaining food. Itachi recognizes that an absence of fighting between ninja villages does not mean ordinary people enjoy peace 111.

At the developing Base, Naruto confirms that both men are full party members and teaches them Nen. They accept responsibility for helping future party members awaken it. Itachi also teaches revolutionary material to children and protects villagers while Shisui fights Kakuzu 126 128 129 134.

In Amegakure, Itachi challenges Pain’s proposed peace through overwhelming force. He warns that the weapon could trigger a greater war after its owner’s death and argues that hunger and poverty are themselves forms of pain. Nagato agrees to support the revolution secretly while continuing his own plan; Naruto becomes the proposed liaison to the Akatsuki 177 178 179.

Itachi later returns to Konoha to bring Sasuke to the Base. Fugaku urges him to return permanently and work at the Public Security Bureau, but Itachi refuses to abandon the revolution. Their confrontation nearly becomes violent before Naruto and Mikoto arrive. Fugaku eventually permits Sasuke to visit the Base during school holidays 206 207.

The parallel Shinobi World

After traveling through the Dragon Vein, Itachi learns that his counterpart massacred the Uchiha clan. He is horrified and seeks an explanation, initially suspecting that the other Itachi suffers from “chuunibyou,” as described by Naruto 238 253.

Alongside Nagato, he defeats the Six Paths of Pain using Nen-enhanced Fire Release, chakra manipulation, and Susanoo clones. When the Akatsuki arrives, he leaves a Sharingan-delivered message arranging a private meeting with his counterpart 250 251 252.

The other Itachi recounts Shisui’s death, the planned Uchiha rebellion, and the massacre. Itachi condemns his counterpart’s narrow conception of peace, but acknowledges that he might have followed the same path without Naruto’s ideological influence. He gives his counterpart Red Books and turns his attention to that world’s Sasuke 253 254.

Itachi forces the older Sasuke to study inside Tsukuyomi, where three months pass in roughly three real-world seconds. He later watches the counterpart’s duel with Sasuke alongside Naruto. After the counterpart dies, he explains the massacre’s circumstances and advises Sasuke to preserve his brother’s eyes for transplantation 257 258 261 262.

He subsequently joins Deidara and Sasori in moving against Konoha’s elders, attacking Danzo’s subordinates while Sasuke pursues Danzo. Later, he fights the Four Kage with Perfect Susanoo and makes Mei Terumi and Ōnoki attack their allies through genjutsu 272 294.

Revolutionary Army operations

Itachi and Shisui intercept Tailed Beast Bombs during the Land of Fire’s offensive against the Land of Lightning. Itachi takes control of one bomb and returns it to the Eight-Tails. After the victory, Lelouch directs the pair to spread revolutionary ideas and firearm-manufacturing methods to recruit opposition to the Land of Fire 324.

During negotiations with representatives of the Land of Wind, Land of Lightning, Sunagakure, and Kumogakure, Itachi states that the Revolutionary Army exists to liberate commoners. He refuses demands to sell weapons and warns Shisui to watch for spies at real-world meetings 328.

A later exhibition match against Shisui ends in a draw after both demonstrate Nen-enhanced Susanoo. Itachi then tests the MY-01 rifle before the assembled factions 332.

Other-world missions

Itachi accompanies Naruto in the world containing Conan and Kaito Kuroba. During their reunion aboard a Tokyo-bound cruise ship, Sasuke states that Itachi burned down the Yasukuni Shrine 354.

In the ghoul world, Itachi investigates Tokyo and uses genjutsu to establish a false identity as a special CCG consultant. He leaves aura and chakra on Ken Kaneki before Rize’s attack, protecting Kaneki long enough for him to recover his senses and flee 367.

He later helps arrange Kaneki’s attempt to become human again, agrees to receive captured Parasytes from Naruto, and persuades Yoshimura Kuzen to join the CCG. He also manipulates Yukinori Shinohara into accepting a cover story that Yoshimura and the others are superhumans. Mado Kureo credits Itachi’s counseling with restoring his former demeanor 375 385.

His latest documented appearance places him with Naruto and Shisui during a Reincarnator attack on the Kingdom of Eldia. Naruto asks that Sasuke be returned to the Shinobi World because the enemies and their nuclear bomb make the situation too dangerous 416.

Appearance

• Uchiha clan insignia: Wears clothing bearing the clan crest during his first meeting with Naruto 16.
• Red eyes: Described as a red-eyed young man during his encounter with Kaito Kuroba and Akako Koizumi 353.
• Combat clothing: Wears a practical black combat outfit when confronting the parallel-world Sasuke, distinguishing him from that world’s Itachi in an Akatsuki cloak 257.

Personality

Itachi is gentle toward Sasuke and initially courteous toward Naruto, but his protectiveness can become controlling. He directs Sasuke’s education and uses embarrassing photographs as incentives for monthly tests, claiming to possess ten pictures when Naruto actually gave him more than thirty 16 81.

His early moral reasoning prioritizes chosen outcomes over the rights of innocents. Red Thought broadens his concerns beyond Konoha and ninja society, while firsthand exposure to poverty makes him more attentive to material needs rather than ideology alone 75 77 111.

He is analytical without being blindly trusting. Although he trusts Naruto, he waits for intelligence about the Akatsuki before judging the danger to the Base. In combat, he recognizes when an unfamiliar enemy is too strong to defeat safely and attempts to evacuate Shisui instead 86 136.

Beneath his serious manner is a mischievous streak. He promises the older Sasuke an undefended attack, then dodges and counterattacks because he never promised to remain still or refrain from fighting back 258.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

• Analyzes Zeff’s Shave, Iron Body, and Finger Pistol, but cannot reproduce them merely by observation because they are entirely physical techniques that use no chakra 27.
• Detects only a faint silhouette of a Nen user employing Zetsu with his Mangekyō; his three-tomoe Sharingan cannot see the user at all 127.
