Background / History

Service to Muzan

As Nameless Hundred Faces, he was a creation Muzan considered difficult to obtain and was ordered to eliminate the Sapphire Star. Although outwardly deferential, he remained composed when Muzan threatened him with a blade 40.

Before the Swordsmith Village attack, Muzan dismissed his mangled, blackened body as potentially useful one last time. Akaza carried it into the operation. Later, Muzan could no longer sense their blood connection and wondered whether ignoring Nameless’s earlier advice had been a mistake 48 56.

Becoming Nameless Hunter

Nameless survived, abandoned the name Hundred Faces, and trained in an abandoned temple dojo. His replacement body possessed tremendous strength, but he regarded it as inferior to his lost soul-related ability. He also stressed that possessing Yoriichi’s bones did not give him Yoriichi’s swordsmanship 67.

He refused Akaza’s invitation to return to Infinity Castle without renouncing Muzan. Instead, he set out to change the future Hundred Faces had foreseen: Muzan’s death. During his travels, he fought Inosuke and the Sapphire Star’s Palico, then withdrew as sunrise approached 67.

Black Rock Gorge

After breaching Tamayo’s barriers and abducting her demon captives, Nameless established a crude shelter in Black Rock Gorge. The Sapphire Star tracked him there, broke his improvised Long Sword, and discovered the remains of the demons he had consumed 70.

Nameless escaped the ensuing pursuit through layered traps, concealed flash bombs, duplication, and hallucination-inducing stink bombs. The encounter convinced the Sapphire Star that he understood not only her techniques but also her hunting habits and equipment weaknesses. Her report helped establish the urgency of Corps-wide special training 71 72.

The Blue Spider Lily and Laboratory Theft

Nameless found the Blue Spider Lily near Tanjiro’s home. Because it bloomed only during the day and withered after removal from the soil, he extracted its juice and delivered it to Muzan despite suffering severe sunlight burns. Muzan drank the extract and subsequently survived exposure to the sun 81.

Nameless then urged Muzan to revive Kokushibo and used him to assist a remote infiltration of the Butterfly Mansion. Their tiny demon stole drug samples and Rui’s tissue while Tamayo and Yushiro were away from the laboratory 86 87.

Genya and four Hashira intercepted the pair during the retrieval. Nameless survived dismemberment, but repeated duplication severely damaged his body. He later disrupted the Corps’ artillery with a foul-smelling projectile, allowing Muzan to escape over a cliff. The body left before the swordsmen burned to ash; another surviving portion rescued Muzan from a river 88 90 91.

Final Plan and Fusion

Back in Infinity Castle, Nameless persuaded Muzan to ingest the stolen medicines so they could develop resistance before the final confrontation. He defended Kokushibo’s death as a necessary concession to fate, arguing that preserving too many doomed demons might provoke a greater backlash from the world 91.

With Muzan’s permission, he killed Nakime, seized her control of the castle, and offered himself as the final component of Muzan’s evolution. Muzan swallowed him, gaining a composite monster body and access to his memories 91 94 97.

Nameless continued advising Muzan from within the fused body, including suggesting sunlight absorption when its energy ran low. His preparations were not comprehensive: Shinobu’s concentrated poison still suppressed Muzan’s regeneration, leaving Nameless’s remaining consciousness confused 100 101.

Appearance

Nameless’s appearance changes markedly between his Hundred Faces incarnation and his later hunter body 67 77 91.

  • Earlier body: Pale, withered, and stick-thin; later shown mangled and blackened before the Swordsmith Village attack 48 67.
  • Hunter body: Thick bones, bulging muscles, and tattered clothing stretched taut. Yoriichi’s outline becomes recognizable beneath a hideous demonic face 67.
  • Later face: Gyokko sees a deathly pale but no longer hideous face, with twisted dark-red forehead markings 77.
  • Eyes: Scarlet demon eyes bearing the numbers Four, Six, and—after consuming Gyokko—Five 67 77.
  • Physical deterioration: Repeated splitting leaves web-like cracks across his body, reduces his size, and makes his resemblance to Yoriichi less distinct 90 91.

Personality

Nameless combines fanatical loyalty to Muzan with open irreverence toward him. He jokes about the taste of Muzan’s blood, brushes aside his threats, and ultimately volunteers to be consumed for his sake. His loyalty does not extend to the other demons: he explicitly dismisses their fates as irrelevant to his own purpose 81 91.

He is pragmatic about retreat and willing to win through traps, deception, or expendable bodies. Nevertheless, his confidence can become reckless. After dodging Genya’s artillery shot, he rushed to counterattack and fell directly into the Hashira’s ambush 71 88.

His taunts frequently invoke game-like concepts such as cheats, weapon mains, and experience points. Although uninterested in hunting humans during his travels, he admits having killed someone to obtain access to a blacksmith shop; his avoidance of people is not a moral refusal to harm them 67 71 88 90.

Abilities & Skills

Hundred Faces — Lost Ability

  • Could ferry departed souls, recall shattered remnants of Upper Rank souls, and communicate with the eternally sleeping Nether Lantern 67.
  • Previously summoned the Hand Demon and Shara Ishvalda; the Sapphire Star associates his former fighting style with summons and mental attacks 70 71.
  • Had glimpsed a future in which Muzan would die 67.
  • Nameless states that these soul-related functions are gone after becoming Nameless Hunter 67.

Memory-Based Prediction and Tactical Learning

  • Possesses fragments of the Sapphire Star’s memories, allowing him to recognize her Palico and hunter techniques 67.
  • Studies Long Sword mechanics, Scoutfly vulnerabilities, trap placement, and the Sapphire Star’s likely pursuit decisions 70 71.
  • Identifies Genya’s Heavy Bowgun and warns Kokushibo of its destructive power 88.
  • After fusion, his memories let Muzan anticipate familiar Long Sword sequences. The Sapphire Star counters by varying her attacks 94 96.

His knowledge of expected deaths informs his strategy, but his claims about a corrective “will of the world” are his explanation of fate, not an independently demonstrated ability 77 88 91.

Strength and Long Sword Combat

  • Catches Akaza’s punch without retreating and throws his fist aside hard enough to make him stagger 67.
  • Uses sheer force to parry Inosuke’s attacks 67.
  • Reproduces Foresight Slash, including evasions against the Sapphire Star and a Heavy Bowgun shell; attempts to follow the latter with Spirit Thrust 70 88.
  • Uses fleshy spikes on his back to secure his oversized weapon 67.
  • His early swordsmanship is crude, and his scrap-metal weapons cannot withstand the Sapphire Star or the Hashira’s enhanced Nichirin Blades 67 70 88.

Acquired Blood Demon Arts

Source Applications Limits / Observations
Kaigaku Uses Thunder Breathing, Fourth Form: Distant Thunder, for rapid escape 70. The Sapphire Star can pursue him with her own Thunder Breathing 71.
Hantengu Turns severed portions into shadows or clones, then recombines them; accelerates while repeatedly tearing and regenerating his muscles 71 88. Repeated duplication cracks and weakens his body 90 91.
Gyokko Supplies fish-flesh creation for the composite monster body 97. Documented as part of the fusion design rather than a separate attack by Nameless.
Rui Supplies threads used as fascia or tendons in the fused body 97 100. Acquired through stolen tissue, not by consuming Rui whole 87 91.
Nakime Enables control of Infinity Castle and contributes to the fused body’s shell 91 97. Taken by forcibly draining Nakime’s life 91.

Remote Demon Creation

  • Creates a tiny demon using his own blood and Kokushibo’s 86.
  • Controls its movements remotely while Kokushibo shares its vision 86.
  • Uses its tentacles to navigate terrain and steal laboratory samples 86 87.
  • Retrieves it through Nakime’s portal when the mountain confrontation threatens the operation 88 91.

Regeneration and Drug Adaptation

  • Drinking Muzan’s blood rapidly heals his sunlight-burned body 81.
  • Survives extensive dismemberment through splitting and recombination 88 90.
  • Reports largely breaking down the Reversal Drug and Aging Poison after deliberate exposure 91.
  • This preparation does not establish immunity to every poison: Shinobu’s later concentrated dose still inhibits the fused Muzan’s regeneration 101.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Improvised Great Long Swords — Oversized weapons forged from poor materials; the first documented example is rusty and taller than Nameless himself. His last imitation is lost before his return to Infinity Castle 67 70 88 91.
  • Metal traps, Shock Trap, and tranq bombs — Combined to immobilize and nearly incapacitate the Sapphire Star during her pursuit 71.
  • Concealed Flash Bomb — Hidden inside falling rock so that cutting the boulder triggers the flash 71.
  • Stink bombs — Disorient Scoutflies and induce a false visual trail. A later foul-smelling projectile briefly disrupts Corps artillery 71 90.
  • Pitfall trap — Crude stone-slab camouflage and restraining vines placed to catch the Sapphire Star on her return to the gorge 71.
  • Burlap coat — Worn when delivering the Blue Spider Lily extract to Infinity Castle 81.
  • Demon Blood Syringe — Uses one of Muzan’s recruitment syringes to drink blood and heal 81.

Relationships

  • Muzan Kibutsuji — Creator and sole object of his loyalty. Nameless seeks to avert Muzan’s death, supplies the Blue Spider Lily, rescues him, and ultimately becomes part of him 40 67 81 91 97.
  • Sapphire Star — Assigned target, chief opponent, and source of the hunting techniques he imitates. His detailed knowledge forces her to reconsider her approach to fighting him 40 70 71.
  • Akaza — Mocks his swordsmanship and attempts to bring him back to Muzan. Nameless refuses but bids him farewell without declaring betrayal 67.
  • Kokushibo — Addresses him as “elder brother” and recruits him for the laboratory infiltration. Despite Kokushibo protecting him in battle, Nameless considers his destined death expendable 86 88 91.
  • Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Source of the bones used in his body, not an inherited source of swordsmanship. Their resemblance alarms those who recognize Yoriichi 67 72 81.
  • Tamayo and Shinobu Kocho — Researchers whose drugs he steals to undermine the Corps’ planned countermeasures 86 87 91.
  • Nakime — Initially provides escape and retrieval portals; later killed so Nameless can seize her spatial power 88 91.
