Background / History

Guardian of Ancient Liyue

Morax appeared in response to the prayers of Liyue’s ancestors, who sought a powerful, dependable protector amid the devastation of the Archon War. He entered into a contract to protect them and sheltered them from the gods and monstrous beings fighting across their homeland 186 295.

During the war, he personally trained the Millelith, forged weapons, and taught people how to survive. He was among the seven victorious gods who assumed the duty of guiding humanity after the conflict 161 166.

For 3,700 years, Rex Lapis protected and guided Liyue Harbor. Its commercial system developed around contracts, and his decrees at the Rite of Descension shaped trade, public welfare, law, finance, and real estate 168.

Azhdaha’s Pact and Imprisonment

Morax brought Azhdaha, an ancient subterranean Geo lifeform, to the surface at his request and granted him eyes. Their pact allowed Azhdaha to coexist with humanity, but required his imprisonment if he disrupted the order of the surface world 303.

Azhdaha became Zhongli’s dear friend and comrade-in-arms. When erosion eventually drove him into conflict with Liyue, Zhongli sealed him away despite his personal attachment. He later explained that friendship could not override his obligations as the God of Contracts and Liyue’s protector 288 289.

Reasons for Retirement

Thousands of years of responsibility, bereavement, and erosion left Zhongli increasingly exhausted. Although Geo’s resilience and continual self-examination helped him endure, he feared that erosion might eventually strip away his reason and turn his strength against the people he protected 172.

Keqing’s insistence that humanity should determine its own future showed him that Liyue might be ready for human governance. To test that possibility, he signed the Contract to End All Contracts with the Cryo Archon, staking his Gnosis and arranging Fatui assistance in staging his death 172.

Before retiring, he adopted the identity of Zhongli and rehearsed mortal life under two self-imposed rules: he would not use divine powers or create Mora. His longstanding habit of spending without checking prices made the transition difficult 160.

Appearance

  • Mortal identity: Presents himself as a man whose sharp gaze and bearing convey the weight of immense age and experience 162.
  • Sovereign presence: When confronting Azhdaha, his calm posture carries the quiet authority of an ancient ruler 284.
  • Publicly recognized divine form: A brown Eastern Geo dragon, represented by the apparently lifeless body displayed during his staged death at the Rite of Descension 168.
  • Transformation: Can assume different outward appearances, including female forms, for incognito travel 163.

Personality

Zhongli is composed, courteous, and scrupulous about contracts. Even when unable to pay for a meal, he refuses to solve the problem by breaking his own prohibition against creating Mora. He also regards delayed payment as uncomfortable for someone whose identity rests on upholding agreements 160.

His affection for Liyue is paternal rather than possessive. He considers its people his children, takes satisfaction in their prosperity and gratitude, and accepts that protecting them eventually means allowing them to govern and defend themselves 172 186 201.

He responds to Ellin’s revelations about reincarnation and Teyvat’s created nature without panic. Instead, he identifies her as a variable capable of changing predetermined events and considers how to support those changes without violating his contract 162 163.

In private, he enjoys amusing incidents, anecdotes, and ordinary human disputes after millennia spent addressing affairs of state. Ellin’s informal friendship makes him more expressive, while the return of Azhdaha and Guizhong brings him conspicuous happiness 173 174 175 385.

Despite his formidable reputation, Zhongli is sensitive to embarrassment and gossip. He avoids Ying’er to protect his reputation and later retreats from public life after rumors spread about his visit to a lingerie shop 174 386.

Abilities & Skills

Geo Mastery and Resonance

Zhongli teaches that Geo’s offensive strength lies in Resonance, not merely in creating and throwing rocks. By gathering Geo within himself and setting surrounding Geo energy into vibration, he generates powerful concussive impacts 166.

  • A light tap of his finger collapses more than a hundred square meters of ground and reduces the vegetation within it to dust 166.
  • His Geo Spear thrusts release resonance blasts during his battle with Azhdaha 284.
  • He shatters one of Azhdaha’s enormous, resonance-charged meteors with a single composed spear thrust 285.
  • During the final battles, orderly ranks of Geo Spears resonate together to form a defensive line that destroys approaching monsters 452.
  • Geo-rich terrain can supply power for exceptionally large impacts, provided the wielder is strong enough 166.

Impenetrable Fortress and Bedrock Shield

Zhongli compresses immense quantities of Geo energy into a thin, close-fitting protective film. Unlike a detached enclosure, this armor allows its wearer to attack while remaining defended 166 167.

  • His control is precise enough to armor individual strands of hair 167.
  • His protection blocks the shock wave from his own demonstration, keeping Ellin and Venti behind him unharmed 166.
  • Azhdaha’s attacks and the blast from a shattered meteor fail to penetrate his Bedrock Shield 284 285.
  • Ellin’s initial imitation has less than one percent of his defensive strength, illustrating the difference between learning the technique and matching its power 167.

Geo Constructs and Sealing

Zhongli forms weapons, structures, and seals from Geo energy 284 287.

  • Creates a golden Geo Spear for close combat 285.
  • Hovers with four enormous Geo Spears surrounding him during the Azhdaha battle 286.
  • Raises a new Stone Ridge and places a seal around the Evil Dragon King after Ellin’s attack 287.
  • Uses a sealing method he and Azhdaha developed together; Azhdaha can undo it once his memories return 303.

Transformation Arts

His transformation arts are disguises based on the original body, not fundamental changes to its nature 163.

  • Allows him to walk among mortals without revealing his identity 163.
  • Can make him appear female while he remains fundamentally male 163.
  • Cannot provide the complete change of sex Ellin initially seeks 163.

Mora Creation and Divine Authority

As the Geo Archon and God of Wealth, Zhongli could create vast amounts of Mora. Before retirement, he deliberately abstains from doing so to prepare for mortal life 160.

  • His purchases once introduced newly created Mora into circulation, serving the same monetary purpose as production at the Golden House 443.
  • After retiring, he insists that he lives as the mortal Zhongli and that mortals do not possess divine authority; Ellin does not directly confirm whether he can still create Mora 224.
  • He later uses his Geo Archon authority and experience to identify three pieces of top-quality jade when Guizhong’s spending strains his finances 385.

Knowledge and Instruction

More than six thousand years of experience give Zhongli extensive knowledge of martial arts, elemental energy, finance, diplomacy, and the politics of the Seven Nations 166 174.

  • Teaches Ellin close-fitting Geo defense and Resonance 166.
  • Identifies the interference between her Anemo divine core and Geo Vision, recommending either a Geo demon god core or stronger affinity with Geo 167.
  • Guides Ellin through six days of training that improve her ability to channel Geo 167.
  • Ei previously sought his martial instruction during gatherings of the Seven Archons 337.
  • Recognizes Shenhe’s exceptional Vision mastery and potential to attain godhood 427.

Perception and Energy Transfer

  • Detects Azhdaha’s faint presence within Kun Jun by deliberately extending his senses 283.
  • Identifies the Geo Archon’s aura, Liyue’s collective wishes, and Osial’s lingering vortex energy on the time-displaced Ellin 432.
  • Supplies Geo energy alongside Venti’s Anemo and Ei’s Electro to help restore Ellin after her collapse 406.

Erosion and Power Limits

  • Remains vulnerable to erosion despite Geo’s resilience and his efforts to examine his own heart 172.
  • Asks Ellin to stop him if erosion ever causes him to attack Liyue and betray his protective contract 293.
  • Losing his Gnosis does not erase his formidable combat strength; his reputation as the Warrior God predates obtaining it 224.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Geo Gnosis — Surrendered to La Signora after fulfillment of his contract with the Cryo Archon 201.
  • Geo Spear — A weapon he condenses from elemental energy, using its thrusts to deliver resonance attacks 284 285.
  • Memory of Dust — Used to protect Keqing during the Azhdaha battle. Ellin later gives him a pristine version containing Guizhong’s soul remnant and asks him to safeguard it 286 294.

Relationships

  • Ellin — Friend, student, and chosen prospective successor. He supports her ability to change the world’s course, while her efforts reunite him with lost companions. Their close friendship grants her a Geo Archon divine core through her system 162 175 294 303 304.
  • Venti / Barbatos — Longstanding friend whose irreverence contrasts with Zhongli’s rigidity. Venti’s past signature forgery provoked his anger, but they remain close and jointly mentor Ellin 161 164.
  • Azhdaha — Dear friend and former comrade bound by a pact. Zhongli’s duty forced him to seal Azhdaha, making their eventual reunion especially meaningful 288 289 303.
  • Guizhong — Cherished lost companion whose death contributed to his loneliness. She had feelings for him that he once failed to recognize; her resurrection brings him profound happiness 291 292 385 386.
  • Keqing — Her advocacy of human rule helps inspire his retirement. He later works with Ellin to restore her confidence after she struggles with the responsibilities transferred to humanity 172 282 288.
  • Hu Tao — Fellow member of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. He checks on her during the Liyue crisis and welcomes her home after her outing with Ellin 180 251.
  • Lumine and Paimon — Assist him in preparing Rex Lapis’s rite of parting without initially knowing his identity. He apologizes and explains his staged death after handing over his Gnosis 171 201.
  • Ei — Fellow Archon and former recipient of his martial instruction. Ellin later reunites her with Zhongli and Venti to discuss divinity and trust in humanity 337 366.
  • Cryo Archon / Tsaritsa — Counterparty to the Contract to End All Contracts, which enables his retirement 172 201.
  • La Signora — The Tsaritsa’s envoy who receives his Gnosis. He thanks Ellin for refraining from attacking her and thereby preserving the agreement 201.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Meeting and Mentoring Ellin

Zhongli first investigates Ellin after hearing reports of her demon-slaying journeys with Xiao. Her multiple Visions, divine weapons, and unaided use of Anemo briefly make him wonder whether she might be Venti in a female guise 154.

Ellin subsequently recognizes his mortal identity and arranges his reunion with Venti. After securing her secret by contract, Zhongli learns about her reincarnation and foreknowledge, then permits her to alter coming events so long as she preserves his agreement with the Cryo Archon 160 162 163.

He prepares her for the grief and companionship needs of an Archon’s long life, encourages her developing ideals, and teaches her Geo. He also explains that Liyue’s recognition of her as an adeptus rests on her protective deeds, not her nationality or origins 164 166 167 175.

Staged Death and the First Osial Crisis

Following his apparent death at the Rite of Descension, Zhongli helps prepare his own rite of parting. Merchants’ willingness to surrender profits in Rex Lapis’s honor reassures him of their gratitude 168 171.

During Osial’s attack, he accompanies evacuating citizens while retaining his Gnosis and his obligation to protect them. He allows Liyue and Ellin to face the crisis as a test, judging Ellin’s decision to fight for the nation an important step toward godhood 186 195.

Afterward, he transfers his Gnosis to La Signora and reveals his retirement. The courage shown by the Qixing, adepti, and Ellin convinces him that Liyue can face its future without depending on him 201 202.

Azhdaha, Guizhong, and Renewed Hope

When Ellin warns him that Azhdaha has awakened, Zhongli joins the expedition to Nantianmen. He fights the eroded dragon, protects Keqing, and participates in the renewed sealing before reconnecting with Azhdaha’s benevolent will 282 284 286 287 289.

His conversations with Ellin expose the personal cost of erosion and his fear of someday harming Liyue. Her gift of the Memory of Dust and promise to resurrect Guizhong give him hope beyond simply enduring those losses 292 293 294.

Azhdaha later frees himself and shares tea with Zhongli in Liyue Harbor. Guizhong’s subsequent resurrection restores another treasured companion, although their shopping trip produces a scandal that reportedly sends Zhongli into hiding at Moon Carver’s residence for three months 303 385 386.

Ellin’s Succession and the Finale

During Osial’s later escape, Zhongli deliberately refrains from intervention unless no other choice remains. He hopes the crisis will allow Liyue’s people to accept Ellin as their new Geo Archon; he and Azhdaha smile when her contract with the nation is sealed 423 429 430.

Ellin’s time displacement also completes an earlier encounter: Zhongli had once sensed a powerful future Geo Archon without knowing when she would arise. He ultimately realizes that this figure was the friend whose growth he had personally supported 432 441.

In the final battles, he remains an active defender, hovering above the battlefield while his resonating Geo Spears destroy monsters approaching the defensive line 452.

Notable Quotes

“If the people of Liyue honor you as an adeptus, then an adeptus you are. Why concern yourself with your origins or identity?” 175

“Even stone may have a heart. Naturally, so do I. But I am the God of Contracts, and the god of the people of Liyue...” 289

“If that day truly comes, please stop me!” 293

Trivia

  • His retirement pastimes include admiring flowers, walking birds, listening to storytellers, and watching plays 224.
  • The storyteller’s account that Rex Lapis carved Azhdaha into a dragon is explicitly treated as an artistic embellishment rather than literal history 303.
  • In the higher-dimensional world, Keqing plays Zhongli in Genshin Impact but refuses to use his shield because she feels unworthy of it. She asks Ellin to fund pulls for a C6 Zhongli and refinement-rank-five signature weapon; these are goals for his game counterpart, not advancements of the novel’s Zhongli 459.
