Background / History

Ei and her elder twin sister, Raiden Makoto, protected Inazuma together. Makoto served as the publicly recognized Electro Archon and governed the nation, while Ei acted as her shadow and fought its enemies. Ei accompanied Makoto to gatherings of the original Seven Archons, where she became acquainted with Venti and Zhongli 366.

During the calamity five hundred years earlier, Makoto departed for Khaenri’ah without telling Ei. With Inazuma also under attack, Ei could not immediately follow her. Kitsune Saiguu undertook its defense so that Ei could leave, but by the time Ei reached Khaenri’ah, she found Makoto dying. Kitsune Saiguu also sacrificed herself defending Inazuma 371 372.

The devastation and loss drove Ei toward an Eternity intended to prevent further change and bereavement. To resist erosion, she abandoned her physical body, housed her consciousness within Musou Isshin, and withdrew into the Plane of Euthymia. She created the intelligent Shogun puppet to govern in her place 266.

Ei locked the puppet’s directives so thoroughly that she retained no administrative permission to change them. This safeguard against her own possible erosion later became an obstacle to revising Eternity: the Shogun possessed an independent will and remained bound to Ei’s earlier convictions 342.

Appearance

  • Purple-haired appearance: Ei is identified as an imposing purple-haired woman during the confrontation on Seirai Island 335.
  • Lavish purple robes: The Shogun body through which she acts wears elaborate purple clothing 266.
  • Shared body, different demeanor: When Ei takes control, the puppet’s stern expression softens and its voice becomes gentler 341 363.

Personality

Ei is a perfectionist warrior whose martial skill has been refined through countless battles. She respects formidable opponents and openly acknowledges Ellin’s strength, even admitting that she would not have been certain of victory had she fought Ellin first 335 343.

Her apparent coldness conceals a deeply human attachment to her sister, friends, and nation. Unable to accept their deaths, she tried to force herself toward unfeeling divinity, but her gentleness never disappeared. Even knowing that the samurai before her were only memories, she instinctively protested when they endangered themselves to protect her 375.

Her resistance to progress is rooted in fear for Inazuma, not simply an unwillingness to listen. She demands proof that humanity’s wishes are strong enough to withstand the Heavenly Principles. Guidance from Ellin, Yae Miko, Kitsune Saiguu, Venti, and Zhongli gradually helps her replace protective isolation with trust in her people 333 334 372 378.

Ei enjoys sweets and is moved by thoughtful gestures from friends. She also becomes emotionally invested in the anonymous author whose novel seems to understand her grief and offer guidance whenever she is lost 266 269 371.

Abilities & Skills

Refined Swordsmanship

Ei’s personal fighting style emphasizes precision and efficiency rather than the Shogun puppet’s broad, explosive attacks 342.

  • Measures each slash’s angle and force to inflict maximum damage with minimal expenditure.
  • Combines tight defense with relentless close-range pressure.
  • Exchanges more than ten thousand moves with Ellin, repeatedly forcing her onto the defensive 342.

Electro Manipulation

Ei commands powerful lightning attacks alongside her sword techniques 342 344.

  • Summons a thousand lightning bolts at once during her duel with Ellin 342.
  • Unleashes enormous slashes to destroy the mountain-sized meteors summoned by Ellin’s Planet Befall barrage 344.
  • Can still be overwhelmed: sustained bombardment damages the puppet body, and Ei recognizes that the remaining meteors would destroy both it and Musou Isshin 344.

Plane of Euthymia and Consciousness

Ei preserves her consciousness within Musou Isshin and meditates in her inner world to slow spiritual erosion 266.

  • Can take control of the Shogun puppet’s body 266 363.
  • Holds an absolute home-field advantage within the Plane of Euthymia.
  • Can fight there as a will form without being weakened by damage to the puppet’s body 345.
  • Can access Makoto’s preserved Consciousness Space through a spatial vortex beneath the Grand Narukami Shrine; there, Ei and the Shogun can appear separately 376.

Puppet Creation

Ei created the Shogun as an intelligent, god-level substitute body and executor of Eternity 266 343.

  • Taught the puppet everything she knew 266.
  • Gave it durability comparable to a god’s body 344.
  • Its independent will and locked directives prevent Ei from simply rewriting its convictions 342.
  • Its governance through fixed rules creates exploitable loopholes, contributing to the Tri-Commission’s unchecked corruption 321.

Power of Wishes

Ei gathers the dreams and resolve of her subjects into her sword, sharpening it through their collective will 408.

  • Treats each stroke as an expression of the warrior’s intent and the wishes entrusted to them.
  • Pulverizes a rock with a lightly delivered, wish-empowered slash.
  • Explains that an unsettled heart cannot sense the people’s wishes, which prevents Ellin from immediately reproducing the technique 408.

Sacred Sakura Planting

Using the seed entrusted to her by Makoto, Ei channels her dream of protecting Inazuma into the Sacred Sakura 380.

  • The seed travels into the past and takes root in Inazuma.
  • Carries both Ei’s protective wishes and her people’s dreams of a better life.
  • Produces the Sacred Sakura, whose roots absorb and purify the land’s filth 371 380.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Musou Isshin — The treasured sword received from Makoto; houses Ei’s consciousness and a concealed fragment of Makoto’s will 266 378 379.
  • Shogun puppet — Her substitute body, autonomous guardian of Eternity, and administrator of Inazuma 266 342.
  • Sacred Sakura seed — Makoto’s final gift, planted through time using Ei’s wishes and dreams 380.
  • The Domineering Electro Archon Falls for Me — The light novel delivered through Yae Miko that becomes a major source of guidance during her reconsideration of Eternity 266 371.

Relationships

  • Raiden Makoto — Elder twin sister and former governing partner. Makoto’s death shapes Ei’s original pursuit of Eternity; understanding her ideals later allows Ei to master Musou Isshin and reunite briefly with her remaining consciousness 366 372 379 380.
  • Yae Miko — Familiar and intimate friend. Miko teases Ei, brings her rare sweets, and promotes the novel intended to draw her out of isolation 265 266 325.
  • Shogun — Creation, substitute body, and independent partner. Ei eventually rejects treating her as a tool, while the Shogun agrees to become Ei’s shadow 342 378 379.
  • Ellin — Challenger, friend, fellow protector of Inazuma, and later student. Ellin helps Ei reconsider Eternity through battle and travel; Ei subsequently teaches her wish-empowered swordsmanship 344 363 378 408.
  • Kitsune Saiguu — Dear friend who defended Inazuma so Ei could pursue Makoto. Her sacrifice remains a source of grief, and her later guidance contributes to Ei’s recovery 372.
  • Zhongli / Morax — Senior Archon, old acquaintance, and martial instructor. Ei previously sought his guidance and later credits his advice with helping her understand humanity’s potential 337 344 366 378.
  • Venti / Barbatos — Old acquaintance and senior Archon. Mondstadt’s prosperity under his hands-off rule helps Ei recognize that a god can watch over people without controlling their lives 363 366 377.
  • The people of Inazuma — Her subjects and source of faith. Their devotion, courage, and wishes ultimately convince her to protect their progress rather than restrain it 375 376 378.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Novel That Challenges Eternity

Yae Miko leaves sweets and a copy of The Domineering Electro Archon Falls for Me at Tenshukaku. Ei takes control of the Shogun to enjoy the treats and discovers the book. Its knowledge of her private history convinces her that its anonymous author may be a surviving old friend 266 269 280.

The book’s romantic relationship between Ei and Ailin belongs to the story within the story, not Ei’s actual relationship history. Its author explicitly gives its version of Ei a different characterization and pattern of leaving seclusion 267.

After an installment depicts the damage caused by confiscated Visions and neglected crises, the real Ei questions a subordinate and leaves Tenshukaku for the first time in centuries. Her intervention leads to officials being imprisoned and troops being redirected against pirates and bandits 320 321.

Duel with Ellin

Ellin challenges both the Shogun and Ei to prove the strength of Inazuma’s wishes. After Ellin defeats the puppet, Ei takes over and initially declares victory when Ellin’s personal power runs nearly dry 341 342.

Ellin then draws on the wishes entrusted to her and unleashes three hundred shots of Planet Befall. The bombardment overwhelms Ei’s defenses and damages the puppet body. Ei intends to acknowledge her defeat publicly, but Ellin persuades her to announce a draw to preserve the Shogun’s standing as a symbol of faith 343 344 345.

The Vision Hunt Decree is abolished and the civil war ends. The Sakoku Decree remains in force while Ei works toward a replacement for her old Eternity 345.

A New Understanding of Eternity

Ellin takes Ei abroad to observe other nations. Mondstadt challenges her assumptions about governance, while Liyue demonstrates humanity’s capacity to govern and accumulate strength through successive generations 363 377 378.

Later, Ei and Ellin destroy Rifthounds attacking the Sacred Sakura’s roots. Memories released from the damaged roots confront Ei with the sacrifices and unwavering faith of Inazuma’s people, prompting her to promise them a brighter future 371 375 376.

Ei concludes that individual wishes change, but humanity’s dream of pursuing something better endures. Ellin approves this new Eternity, and the Shogun accepts it without requiring the prolonged conflict described in the game’s storyline 377 378.

Makoto’s Farewell and Later Support

Ei’s mastery of Musou Isshin releases Makoto’s remaining will. After their reunion, Ei plants the Sacred Sakura seed through time and bids farewell as Makoto’s final consciousness fades. Ellin stays with her afterward, sharing ice cream and allowing her a moment of carefree rest 379 380 381.

Ei later supports Ellin in return, teaching her to wield wishes and encouraging her to focus on the present and the friends beside her. When Ellin warns the gods of an approaching calamity, Ei joins Zhongli and Venti in urging the other gods to trust her and prepare for battle 408 447.
