Elite swordswoman; Dandelion Knight 49 Retrospectively established as one of Mondstadt’s strongest fighters before obtaining a Vision. Earned her swordsmanship and title through personal training.
Anemo Vision bearer 49 Received her Vision after becoming Acting Grand Master. Her workload left little time to develop its power, and she initially could not fly using Anemo.
Developing Windriding 64 Gradually learned to control Anemo for flight under Venti’s guidance during the battle with Stormterror, though she was not yet proficient.
Artifact-enhanced strength 390 Absorbed Artifacts gifted by Ellin and became substantially stronger. Her increased power later allowed her Wind-Pressure Sword to help clear a battlefield gap hundreds of meters wide 397.

Background / History

Jean is the eldest daughter of the Gunnhildr family. From childhood, she underwent strict training in swordsmanship, etiquette, and the duty to protect Mondstadt. The family would turn to a younger child if its eldest proved insufficiently talented; Jean therefore worked to shoulder those responsibilities herself rather than let them fall on Barbara 130.

Although she sometimes envied children playing freely outside, imagining Barbara among them made her burdens worthwhile. After their parents separated, Barbara lived with their father, and the sisters had increasingly little contact. Their later positions further complicated their relationship: Barbara usually approached Jean on official business rather than as her younger sister 129 130.

Jean became an accomplished swordswoman before receiving her Anemo Vision. As Acting Grand Master, she inherited responsibility for defending Mondstadt with limited personnel, since Grand Master Varka had taken most of the Knights on his expedition. She also reformed the order following its past mistreatment of Diluc, though his resentment toward the Knights persisted 49 95 350.

Personality

Jean’s lifelong conviction is to protect Mondstadt. She knows every city resident’s name and takes threats to their safety personally. During the Whispering Woods fire, she reassures Ellin and Fischl’s families before preparing to enter the blaze herself 8 49.

Her demanding standards are motivated by concern rather than indifference. She refuses to make Noelle a knight while believing that Noelle’s excessive self-sacrifice would put her in danger, yet recognizes the seriousness of her withdrawal after repeated examination failures and seeks help immediately. She later teaches Noelle that accepting responsibility includes facing the person she has hurt 77 87.

Jean is usually serious and overworked, but not without humor or mischief. She relaxes enough to tease Diluc at Ellin’s celebration feast, helps Barbara draw Ellin into a concert partly because she finds the prospect amusing, and eventually participates in Ellin’s schemes against Snezhnaya. She also recognizes her growing dependence on Ellin and deliberately resolves not to make Mondstadt’s safety rest on one person 70 99 121 138 390.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Jean’s martial ability predates her Vision and places her among Mondstadt’s finest swordswomen 49.

  • Tornado-cleaving slash: Releases a golden arc of sword energy more than ten meters long, splitting a tornado in half. The effort leaves her exhausted 49.
  • Wind-Pressure Sword: Combines a high-speed thrust with wind pressure and Anemo. She breaks a Pyro Abyss Mage’s shield with it and later sweeps groups of Abyss Mages toward Diluc 62 353.
  • Dawn’s Wind: Sends an enormous teal wave of sword energy into Stormterror’s tornado breath, helping Lumine tear an opening through it 65.
  • Limitations: Her strength is best expressed on the ground. Early in the dragon rescue, she lacks efficient large-scale attacks comparable to Ellin’s, making mass combat costly in time and stamina 62 64.

Anemo Manipulation

  • Windriding: Learns aerial movement under Venti’s guidance. During the dragon battle, Venti also keeps the group aloft so they can concentrate on charging attacks 64 65.
  • Defensive currents: Imitates Venti’s swirling wind protection to push away surrounding thunderclouds. The thin shield is effective while stationary but cannot clear the clouds fast enough during high-speed flight 67.
  • Elemental coordination: Combines her wind attack with Lisa’s lingering Electro to trigger a large Electro Swirl reaction, spreading lightning through the monster horde 397.

Dandelion Field

Jean performs an oath ceremony with her sword and summons a healing field through her Vision 86.

  • Closes Ellin’s torn wounds, stops her bleeding, and partially restores damaged internal organs after Venti pulls her back from the brink of death 86.
  • Exhausts Jean’s remaining strength. Ellin still requires Hydro healing for most of her injuries and blood loss 86.

Leadership and Administration

  • Directs reconstruction, repairs, and treatment of the injured after Stormterror’s attacks 37 70.
  • Conducts weekly meetings to establish tasks, policies, improvements, and evaluations of the Maid Corps 90.
  • Delegates neighborhood assistance to Noelle’s squad, reducing trivial demands on her office and freeing time for important public affairs 94.
  • Coordinates infantry and artillery during major invasions; on the southern front, her command brings a thousand cannons into action 397 450.
  • Organizes daily inspections of the Barrier’s rift after the Wolvendom operation 355.

Diplomacy and Commerce

  • Uses Ellin’s civilian testimony to counter a Snezhnayan envoy’s demand to subjugate Stormterror, defending Mondstadt’s right to resolve its own crisis 57.
  • Coordinates compensation claims and economic pressure with Ningguang 99 100 238.
  • Patents Sucrose’s Slime Bra prototypes and launches the Sun Knight Brand, appointing Ellin chairwoman 156.

Equipment / Items

  • Favonius Sword — Used against tornadoes and Abyss Mages and to perform Dawn’s Wind. Ellin later leaves Jean a Favonius Sword as part of her preparations for Mondstadt’s defense 49 62 65 397.
  • Anemo Vision — Powers her wind techniques and Dandelion Field 62 86.
  • Artifacts gifted by Ellin — Absorbed to substantially improve her strength 390.
  • Realm Dispatch — Given by Ellin before her departure, allowing Jean to visit or leave messages through the Serenitea Pot 138.

Relationships

  • Barbara — Biological younger sister. Jean takes on the Gunnhildr family’s duties partly to protect her. Concert rehearsals allow them to spend time together outside their official roles, culminating in an emotional embrace 121 122 130.
  • Ellin — Citizen she initially seeks to protect, later a trusted comrade and Sun Knight. Jean carries her home after her frenzied battle in Wolvendom, helps save her life, and increasingly relies on her advice 22 60 73 86 138.
  • Noelle — Aspiring knight who admires and imitates her. Jean withholds recognition until Noelle develops the necessary judgment and conviction, then formally appoints her Guardian Knight 77 87 91.
  • Diluc — Fellow defender of Mondstadt. Jean feels indebted to him over the Knights’ past conduct, apologizes, and accepts his decision to protect the city as the Darknight Hero rather than rejoin the order 350 355.
  • Lisa — Longtime friend and colleague. Helps cover Jean’s duties during concert rehearsals and later fights beside her on Mondstadt’s southern front 122 397.
  • Kaeya — Longtime friend and fellow Knight. Teases Jean about performing, but also encourages her to spend time with family and helps manage the Knights in her absence 122.
  • Venti / Barbatos — Her Archon and ally in saving Dvalin. Provides flight guidance and joins her in the effort to preserve Ellin’s life 35 64 86.
  • Ningguang — Pen pal and political partner. Works with Jean on compensation claims, the Stone Gate trade project, and cooperation between Liyue and Mondstadt 99 100 238.
  • Klee — Knight whose safety Jean entrusts to Ellin. Jean protects her from the diplomatic consequences of the Dragonspine missile incident and later agrees to make her a joint bomb-research chief engineer 96 99 242.
  • Feng’er — Rescues Jean from Stormterror’s Thunderstorm Tornado after Ellin orders her intervention 67.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Whispering Woods and Early Wolvendom Incidents

  • Arrives at the forest fire, promises to recover Ellin and Fischl safely, and prepares to cut a path through the flames. Ellin’s Frost Arrow creates an escape route before Jean acts 8 9.
  • Finds Ellin after her violent response to Fischl’s injuries, understands why she lost control, and carries her home 22.

Stormterror Crisis

  • Faces Dvalin’s first assault while unable to reach him and reluctant to attack one of the Four Winds. After Ellin drives him off, Jean directs recovery efforts and personally visits to thank her 35 37.
  • Destroys one of four tornadoes during a later attack, then withdraws with Diluc when Ellin takes over. Both leave the public acclaim to Mondstadt’s new heroes 49 52.
  • Requests Ellin and Lumine’s help as the Knights struggle with insufficient manpower and growing public dissatisfaction 53 57.
  • Rejects Snezhnayan intervention and joins Venti’s plan to defeat and purify Dvalin, offering support in her personal capacity 57 58.
  • Participates in the aerial rescue battle but is incapacitated by a Thunderstorm Tornado. Feng’er extracts her, and Lumine keeps her from falling 64 67 68.
  • After the crisis, formally bestows the titles Honorary Knight on Lumine and Sun Knight on Ellin 73.

Noelle’s Recognition

  • Asks Ellin to check on Noelle after her ninth failed examination leaves her withdrawn. Jean fears both for her mental state and the danger of making her a knight before she is ready 77.
  • Uses Dandelion Field to stabilize Ellin after the attempt to rescue Noelle nearly kills her 86.
  • Encourages Noelle to face Ellin and accept responsibility rather than flee from guilt 87.
  • Recognizes Noelle’s newfound commitment to helping Mondstadt out of love rather than a desire for approval, awarding her the rose-and-shield medal of the Guardian Knight 91.

Dragonspine Compensation Scheme

  • Learns from Klee that Ellin launched a missile at Fatui forces on Dragonspine. Although initially alarmed by the possibility of war, Jean accepts Ellin’s argument that no evidence links them to the attack 99.
  • Works with Ellin and Ningguang to attribute the explosion to a failed Fatui weapons test. Diluc and Albedo support inflated damage claims 99 100.
  • The Knights demand 220 million Mora, while Liyue demands nearly 100 million. Snezhnaya ultimately pays 320 million Mora after Ningguang blockades the Northland Bank 100.

Concert and Sisterly Reconciliation

  • Supports Barbara’s proposal for a concert to address the lingering fear and discouragement left by the dragon crisis 120.
  • Agrees to perform after Ellin makes Jean’s participation a condition and Barbara appeals to her as “big sister.” Lisa and Kaeya take over her work during rehearsals 121 122.
  • Performs in the opening song and later sings “Let the Wind Tell You” alongside Klee, Barbara, and Ellin 127.
  • Overhears Barbara’s feelings backstage and admits her own wish to grow closer. The sisters embrace, and Jean asks Barbara to keep calling her “Sis” 130.

Ellin’s Departure and Economic Projects

  • Helps arrange Ellin’s farewell banquet and salutes her as she leaves Mondstadt, while acknowledging how much she has come to rely on her 138.
  • Turns the Slime Bra into a major business: Sucrose reports 120,000 sets sold in one week for 960 million Mora. Jean assigns Ellin thirty percent of the earnings, with a reported share of 280 million Mora awaiting her 156.
  • Apologizes for using Ellin’s title as the brand name without permission 158.
  • Joins Keqing and Ningguang in Ellin’s response to Snezhnayan land speculation at Stone Gate. Mondstadt and Liyue announce permanent military exercises and establish joint bomb research, with Mondstadt supplying talent and Liyue funding 238 242.

Abyss Operations and Later Calamities

  • Investigates the Abyss Prince’s forces with Diluc, but fails to discover their plans beyond orders for Abyss Mages to gather at Windrise 213.
  • Joins the Wolvendom operation and later reconciles with Diluc over his role outside the Knights. His covert squad, Dawn, operates with funding from the order 350 355.
  • Holds Mondstadt’s southern front during the monster tide, combining attacks with Lisa and commanding artillery despite the defenders’ severe manpower disadvantage 390 397.
  • Oversees reconstruction and foreign supply purchases afterward. Slime Bra revenue and Ellin’s donations keep the Knights funded, but the workload leaves Jean and her colleagues barely able to sleep 405.
  • During the final calamity across the Seven Nations, coordinates cannon support from headquarters while Mondstadt’s defenders fight on multiple fronts 450.

Notable Quotes

“Noelle, the courage to take responsibility is also a quality a knight should possess.” 87

“Behind the happiness of countless people, someone always has to shoulder the burden and keep going. If possible, I want that person to be me.” 130

Trivia

  • Pizza is identified as Jean’s favorite food; pizza and coffee are on her desk while she recovers from defending Mondstadt 53.
  • Her constellation is Leo Minor. Mona’s observation that she would eventually have to “leave the pride and grow on her own” is recalled during the monster-tide defense 397.
  • Ellin labels a cracked Anemo Vision “Jean” and stores it in her inventory after the sisters’ reconciliation; the passage does not establish that it is Jean’s own Vision 130.
