Geography and Layout
- City approach: A bridge leads to the guarded city gates. The Whispering Woods lie less than a kilometer away after crossing the bridge out of the city and turning left. The bridge is described as the city’s only ordinary entrance and carries both pedestrians and vehicles; it is later demolished to impede the approaching monster tide 8 31 109 390.
- Highest point: The elevated plaza in front of the Cathedral of Favonius contains an enormous statue of the Anemo Archon, also called the Statue of The Seven. The cathedral’s bell tower is later identified as the city’s highest point, offering a view across almost all of Mondstadt 35 36 48 407.
- Northwestern district: The Knights of Favonius headquarters stands in this part of the city 49.
- Southeastern district: The Angel’s Share tavern is located here 48.
- Built environment: Main roads, alleys, market stalls, balconies, windmills, and densely packed houses are documented. Dvalin’s storms tear apart wooden buildings and turn roof tiles, furniture, and signs into airborne debris 8 35 48.
- Scale: The city is substantially larger and more populous than its in-game counterpart, with longer streets, hundreds of times as many buildings, and numerous restaurants and food stalls beyond Good Hunter 134.
- Water and defensive terrain: Lake water surrounds the city, making it relatively easy to defend and difficult to attack. Cider Lake stretches north toward the Windrise Foothills; cliffs and complex terrain on the northwestern and northeastern approaches reduce pressure on the northern defenses 109 396 398 450.
- Climate and elemental environment: Gentle winds blow throughout the seasons, keeping the windmills turning. Anemo is exceptionally concentrated in Mondstadt, although the greater concentration primarily benefits fighters capable of drawing on large quantities of elemental energy 191.

Administration and Civic Life
Public Institutions
- Knights of Favonius: Guard the gates, respond to threats, conduct rescues, and organize disaster recovery. Jean directs reconstruction and treatment after Dvalin’s first attack, while Kaeya supervises cleanup following the Whispering Woods fire 12 31 37.
- Adventurers’ Guild: Assigns commissions and participates in emergency responses. After incorrect commission information endangers Ellin and Fischl, Cyrus apologizes personally and provides compensation and triple the commission reward alongside Jean 8 11.
- Church of Favonius: Issues gathering commissions as well as providing healing and emergency care 16 22.
- Personnel shortages: Varka’s expedition takes most of the Knights’ personnel away from Mondstadt. Jean consequently asks Ellin and Lumine for assistance during the Dragon Disaster, and the shortage remains a major concern during the later monster tide 53 390.
- Mondstadt Neighborhood Committee Knight Squad / Rising Sun Watchers: Jean creates a community-service role for Noelle, who becomes the squad’s captain. Children and elderly residents turn it into a citywide intelligence network with nearly three thousand members by her eighth day in office. Its reports help uncover smuggling and capture Fatui spies and Treasure Hoarders, while thwarting Abyss Order attacks 94.
- Intelligence results: Later known as the Mondstadt Rising Sun Watchers, Noelle’s organization is credited over two months with foiling 182 targeted Abyss attacks within the city and twelve planned attacks on the city. Its work contributes to the deaths of 3,769 Abyss-controlled Hilichurls and the capture or killing of 225 Abyss Mages. Jean, Diluc, and Eula also gravely wound an Abyss Herald in an ambush 211.
- Dawn: An unofficial squad led by the Darknight Hero draws salaries from the Knights but does not appear in their internal records. It covertly eliminates criminals, foreign spies, and nobles plotting against the Knights when legal proceedings are obstructed by missing evidence or outside pressure, presenting the deaths as accidents 355.
Customs, Laws, and Daily Life
- Shopping and leisure: The shopping district offers snacks and clothing shops; the city also has public baths and a library 11.
- Knight recruitment: An annual selection examination includes a written component. Noelle divides her preparation between library study and Training Ground practice. Candidates must meet standards of combat ability, character, speech, and bearing; successful recruits swear their oaths beneath the cathedral plaza’s Statue of The Seven and receive medals from Jean 32 42 73.
- Alcohol restrictions: Selling alcohol to minors violates city law. Diluc initially refuses Ellin’s purchase, then allows it when she says the bottles are for her father 44.
- Citizen volunteers: Residents help fight the Whispering Woods fire and later assist the Knights with clearing streets, repairing homes, and carrying injured people after Dvalin’s attack 8 12 37.
- Religious attachment: Fischl regards the Statue of the Seven in Wolvendom as representing the city’s faith and resolves to report the Abyss Order’s activity around it 17.
- Freedom and divine guardianship: Residents regard Barbatos’s withdrawal from direct rule as an expression of his love for freedom rather than abandonment. They believe they can govern their own lives while he watches over them and appears in times of great crisis 364.
- Wind and the dead: Mondstadt tradition holds that wind carries the souls of those who die far away back to their homeland. This belief encourages adventurers to pursue freedom without fearing death abroad, while making the windless Mare Jivari especially frightening. Stories preserving a person’s name can also guide a lost soul home 110 115 116.
- Bards and storytelling: Bards perform throughout the city. Venti’s storytelling about the Sun Knight becomes a novelty and makes him exceptionally popular, drawing listeners from other performers; he returns to taverns between storytelling appearances 123 363.
- Community celebrations: When Noelle becomes a Guardian Knight after nine failed attempts, shops offer discounts, tavern patrons raise their glasses, and residents leave gifts outside her home 92.
- Public reputation and prejudice: Eula encounters hostility because of her Lawrence Clan ancestry. Ellin refuses to let townspeople’s disapproval dictate her treatment of Eula, while Amber’s efforts help residents recognize Eula as an upright and dependable knight 106 348.
- Ellin’s local standing: Residents initially celebrate Ellin as a mortal hero, the Sun Knight, and Mondstadt’s leading idol rather than treating her as a god. Venti’s accounts of her later achievements greatly increase her prestige, eventually placing it above Jean’s. During the spatial-rift disaster, desperate prayers to Ellin produce an unprecedented surge of power of wishes from Mondstadt 203 206 297 348 401.
Trade and Regional Cooperation
Mondstadt City relies on supplies from surrounding settlements and neighboring regions, including meat from Springvale, wine from Dawn Winery, and ore and cloth from Liyue. During the Dragon Disaster, disruption of the Ley Lines drives Hilichurls onto trade routes, where they attack caravans and delay essential goods. The Adventurers’ Guild and Knights jointly organize teams to clear the roads 73.
Mondstadt and Liyue later cooperate in weapons research. Jean and Keqing agree that Mondstadt will provide expertise while Liyue supplies funding, appointing Klee chief engineer of bomb design and development for both nations. Construction also begins on the Stone Gate trade district, strengthening the connection between the two nations 242 245.
The cooperation develops into cannon and shell production. During the half-year of preparation before the spatial-rift disaster, Mondstadt and Liyue produce more than a thousand tons of shells under the direction of Klee’s design team. Liyue’s forces at Stone Gate subsequently hold their position and draw away monsters to reduce pressure on Mondstadt City 390 399 422.
Emergency Defense
- Preparatory equipment: Ellin gives Artifacts to Jean, Diluc, Kaeya, Eula, and other elite fighters, significantly increasing their strength. She also leaves weapons, including Jean’s Favonius Sword and Lisa’s catalyst, The Four Winds’ Tales 390 397.
- Civilian protection: During the spatial-rift disaster, residents shelter in their homes, and Barbatos raises a Storm Barrier outside the walls. In the final calamity, civilians are gathered in designated shelters protected by Noelle, Fischl, and Sucrose 390 450.
- Civilian mobilization: Adventurers and adult men join the fighting during the first monster tide. Their participation makes it possible to operate a thousand artillery pieces on each of the southern, western, and northern approaches 398.
- Limits of the defenses: The Storm Barrier does not prevent Rifthounds from using spatial movement to enter the city. A sufficiently large monster is also considered capable of stepping over both the walls and barrier 397 399.
- Final reinforcement: Following Ellin’s warning, Varka returns with his expeditionary army and takes responsibility for the eastern defense during the final calamity 451.
History
Ancient Foundations and the Aristocratic Era
Old Mondstadt was the capital of Decarabian, the God of Storms, at the site now known as Stormterror’s Lair. Roughly twenty-six hundred years earlier, he sheltered his people from the region’s freezing winds with a wall of storms, but also assigned their lives in advance and denied their growing desire for freedom 117 333.
Barbatos begins as a small wind spirit and gains strength from the faith of the people he shelters. After the overthrow of Decarabian, he uses divine winds to level mountains, dispel snowstorms, and turn Mondstadt into a warm and fertile land. He establishes the ideal of a free nation without a reigning king, then withdraws rather than risk becoming another tyrant 68 117 140.
A thousand years before the present, aristocratic oppression plunges Mondstadt into another dark age. Barbatos returns and helps Vanessa unite the people and overthrow the nobility. A document called the Leeward Pact, purporting to sell Mondstadt to the Geo Archon and bearing Rex Lapis’s sacred seal, contributes to mass defections among the nobles’ soldiers 161.
Ellin’s Arrival and Early Adventures
Ailin’s attempted in-game teleport to Mondstadt becomes the point of his transmigration into Ellin’s body. He awakens in her bedroom, and Ellin receives a Cryo Vision shortly afterward. Hermann spreads news of his daughter’s Vision and changed appearance so enthusiastically that more than half the city knows about them before she goes exploring 1 3.
A commission in the nearby Whispering Woods leads Ellin and Fischl into a dangerous Whopperflower encounter and a major forest fire. Knights, adventurers, and residents gather to help; the girls escape through a path opened by Ellin’s Cryo arrow. The fire affects roughly a quarter of the woods, and the Guild and Knights acknowledge their respective failures in the incident 8 9 11 12.
Mondstadt subsequently serves as the emergency destination for Fischl after an Abyss Order ambush in Wolvendom. Oz and Feng’er deliver her to the church, then seek reinforcements from the Knights. Jean and Kaeya travel to the battlefield, where Jean finds the unconscious Ellin and brings her back 18 22.
The Cryo Regisvine Alarm
Ellin, Sucrose, and Feng’er bring a severed Cryo Regisvine toward the city. Seeing its crown above the bridge, the guards mistake it for an attacking monster and call for Captain Kaeya before recognizing the girls beneath it 31.
They drag the specimen through the streets to Sucrose’s home. The spectacle strengthens Ellin’s local reputation; tavern patrons begin naming her alongside the Darknight Hero, Jean, and Klee as the city’s four strongest fighters, partly because of Hermann’s embellished boasts 32.
First Dvalin Attack and Reconstruction
Dvalin attacks at dawn, damaging houses and unleashing a storm throughout the city. Jean, Kaeya, Diluc, and Rosaria cannot effectively reach the airborne dragon; his position as one of the Four Winds also complicates their response 35.
Ellin climbs the Anemo Archon’s statue and strikes Dvalin’s wing with a charged Cryo arrow, forcing him to retreat. Venti secretly protects her from the dragon’s wind attacks. Although citizens acclaim Ellin as their savior, her immediate motive is to recover the Slime Bra blown onto Dvalin’s wing 36 37.
Jean leads repairs and medical relief, with reconstruction largely complete seven days later. A delegation from Snezhnaya led by a Fatui Harbinger arrives during this recovery period, adding to her workload. Meanwhile, Dvalin attacks travelers and merchants elsewhere in Mondstadt, and growing public hostility gives rise to the name Stormterror 37 43.
Lumine’s Arrival and Second Dragon Attack
Ellin brings Lumine and Paimon into the city and treats them to dinner at Good Hunter. Amber then gives Lumine a Wind Glider and teaches her to glide from the cathedral plaza 47 48.
Dvalin returns and creates four tornadoes, each approximately one hundred meters tall, within the city. Venti keeps Lumine airborne and guides her attacks against the dragon, buying time for the defenders below. Diluc destroys one tornado with a Pyro firebird, and Jean cleaves another with the Favonius Sword, but both exhaust themselves 48 49.
Ellin flies toward the two remaining tornadoes and takes over from Jean and Diluc. Elsewhere, Noelle shelters more than a dozen elderly residents and children behind a thick Geo wall. Ellin destroys the remaining two tornadoes with a single slash, removing the immediate threat to the city 49 51 73.
Ellin and Lumine then fight Dvalin in the sky with Venti supplying Anemo to sustain their attacks and flight. After the dragon retreats, citizens emerge and cheer the two girls. Venti has also weakened the storm to protect the population; no one dies in the disaster. Kaeya invites Ellin and Lumine to headquarters on Jean’s behalf 51 52.
Storm Barrier and Diplomatic Pressure
Although Dvalin has withdrawn, his Storm Barrier isolates the city and threatens food shortages. Fighters strong enough to break through it are occupied transporting supplies. Lisa identifies the abandoned temples of the Four Winds as the source of the disturbance: Dvalin is drawing on their residual power while disrupting the city’s Ley Line circulation and elemental flow 53.
Jean assigns Amber and Lumine to the Temple of the Falcon of the West, while Kaeya, Lisa, and Ellin handle the other targets. Ellin accompanies Kaeya into the Temple of Andrius. Once the three targeted temples are dealt with, the storm vanishes 53 57.
A masked Snezhnayan envoy subsequently demands that Snezhnaya take control of Stormterror. Ellin intervenes, and Jean uses her words to defend Mondstadt’s right to resolve the crisis without foreign intervention. Nevertheless, nearly half a month of disruption and Snezhnaya’s efforts to inflame public criticism place the Knights under increasing pressure. Ellin invites Jean, Lumine, and Paimon to Angel’s Share to hear a plan devised with Venti 57.
Dvalin’s Rescue and Knightly Investiture
After Dvalin is saved, Jean publicly explains that poisonous blood and Abyss control caused his attacks. Kaeya pays bards to recount how the dragon previously defended Mondstadt against Durin, swallowed poisonous blood, and later awoke to find himself forgotten. The announcement, the songs, the absence of fatalities, and Jean’s promise of home-repair funding greatly reduce public resentment 69.
Citizens respond with gratitude and remorse, undertaking the construction of a Temple of the Eastern Wind Dragon. Resolution of the crisis also defeats Snezhnaya’s attempt to gain leverage over Mondstadt. Ellin’s intervention has helped bring the Dragon Disaster to an end in approximately half a month 69 139.
Peace returns, and the city begins restoring disrupted trade. At the annual investiture ceremony, twenty-five successful candidates swear their oaths beneath the Statue of The Seven. Jean then honors Lumine as an Honorary Knight and Ellin as the Sun Knight before the gathered residents 73.
Noelle later achieves her own dream by becoming a Guardian Knight, prompting celebrations throughout the city. Jean’s subsequent creation of her neighborhood-service role leads to the formation of Mondstadt’s extensive civilian intelligence network 92 94.
The City Concert and Barbatos’s Blessing
Ellin enlists Klee and Albedo to develop fireworks for a concert, and the Knights undertake mass production. Residents and friends contribute to the preparations, while a Mondstadt organizer invites Xinyan to perform. On the day of the event, balloons, flowers, festive lights, and food stalls fill the streets; Angel’s Share, Cat’s Tail, and major shops offer thirty-percent discounts 124 125.
Jean, Barbara, Ellin, and Klee perform before a large crowd. Diluc defeats an Abyss Mage on the city wall while Kaeya encourages him to pause and watch the festivities. During Barbara’s performance, the plaza lights go out and the Anemo Archon appears in teal light; bells and Statues of The Seven glow as people across the city pray 128.
Barbatos plays the Holy Lyre der Himmel and blesses his people, assuring them that the wind will remain beside them. Dvalin flies over the city, and Barbatos departs on his back, leaving the lyre to descend from the sky. Jean leads the crowd in the cry, “May the Wind Lead!” 129.
Ellin’s Travels and Continued Ties to Mondstadt
After several months in Mondstadt, Ellin regards it as the place where she has put down roots, gained a family, and formed lasting friendships. With her knightly dream fulfilled, she decides to explore other nations. She leaves for Liyue but continues returning to the city through its nearby Teleport Waypoint and chooses Mondstadt for family reunions 134 156 159 226.
During one return, Ellin brings Godwin back after discovering that he has remained in the wilderness out of shame for losing Glory’s token and missing Varka’s expedition. Godwin apologizes and reunites with Glory in Mondstadt 157.
The city remains a place of personal refuge and encounters. Shenhe travels there to find Ellin, obtaining her address from Noelle. Later, Ellin brings Ei to experience Mondstadt’s free and prosperous daily life; a resident’s explanation of Barbatos’s unobtrusive guardianship helps Ei reconsider the meaning of watching over a nation 274 363 364.
Abyss Threats and Covert Security
Despite the intelligence network’s successes, Diluc reports increased Abyss Mage activity in Mondstadt. Captured mages later give identical accounts of orders from their prince to gather at Windrise. Jean increases patrols and investigations, while Ellin asks to be notified through the Serenitea Pot so she can teleport back if needed 159 211 213.
A later confrontation involves nearly six hundred Abyss Mages gathered around a spatial rift. Mondstadt’s strongest fighters avoid indiscriminate powerful attacks for fear of worsening the rift, while the mages deliberately attack without such restraint 352.
After the incident, the unofficial Dawn squad begins covert operations against threats that the Knights cannot readily prosecute. Mondstadt City gradually returns to peace 355.
Spatial-Rift Disaster and Siege
Ellin’s sealing barrier buys Mondstadt half a year to prepare for a possible catastrophe. Jean and the other defenders strengthen their forces, stockpile jointly developed ammunition, and monitor the barrier. Springvale’s residents are evacuated to Mondstadt and housed there before the disaster 390 394.
Spatial rifts then open across the region, releasing black mist, destructive sludge, Rifthounds, and other monsters. Corrupted wilderness creatures join the assault, and the densely populated city becomes their principal target. Jean rallies the Knights outside the southern gate, the entrance bridge is blown apart, and Barbatos raises a protective Storm Barrier around the walls 390.
| Front or Position | Defenders and Actions |
|---|---|
| Eastern approach | Venti and Dvalin use large-scale wind attacks against the monster tide 396 397. |
| Southern approach | Jean and Lisa combine Electro strikes with enhanced Anemo attacks and Swirl reactions, repeatedly forcing monsters back into artillery fire 397. |
| Western approach | Kaeya commands the defense. Diluc destroys a boulder thrown toward the wall, then joins Kaeya in wounding a nearly twenty-meter black giant and knocking it into Cider Lake 397. |
| Northern approach | Eula and the Reconnaissance Company defend the terrain-favored northern side, supported by artillery and civilian mobilization 398. |
| City streets | Albedo, Klee, and Sucrose fight Rifthounds that enter through spatial movement 399. |
| Orphanage | Noelle, Fischl, and Oz prevent Rifthounds from reaching the children 400. |
After eight hours, nearly two hundred Rifthounds bypass the outer defenses and enter the city, where relatively few fighters remain. By the eleventh hour, ammunition and supplies have run out. Although the spatial rift has closed, approximately a million monsters still roam Mondstadt, forcing exhausted defenders into close combat 399 401.
In desperation, Mondstadt’s people pray to Ellin. Their wishes reach her in Inazuma, and she immediately teleports into the sky above the city. The scale of the catastrophe exceeds both her expectations and the preparations she had left behind 401.
Salvation, Reconstruction, and Ellin’s Withdrawal
Ellin initially clears distant monsters but cannot safely unleash indiscriminate attacks near the walls and defenders. Her subsequent divine storm sweeps through every corner of Mondstadt, destroys the remaining monsters, and disperses white light that purifies the corrupted soil. The enormous expenditure saves the nation but leaves her in a deep sleep 402 403 404.
A month later, the threat is gone but the region remains devastated. Forests, fields, homes, and the ecosystem have been destroyed, leaving barren land and urgent problems of food supply, replanting, and rebuilding. Without restoration, Mondstadt faces the risk of becoming a desert 405.
After awakening, Ellin surveys the ruined land and isolates herself on the cathedral bell tower, blaming herself for suffering and deaths she could not prevent. Fischl, Noelle, and Sucrose resolve to help her, but she leaves Mondstadt on the sixth day before they can reach her 407.
The city’s residents subsequently donate money and supplies for Ellin’s birthday celebration, despite the difficulty of gathering resources during reconstruction. Their contributions include eggs, apples, and bottles of wine, alongside donations from Liyue and Inazuma 417.
Ellin later uses Wind Sweeps Across the Land again, this time wielding the reviving wind of Reconstruction rather than Disintegration. The white wind restores damaged places to their original state and reawakens the vitality of Mondstadt’s land 419.
Retrospective Visit to the City’s Past
During a journey into the past, Ellin travels through Mondstadt with Alice and encounters the city during Fischl’s childhood. She secretly answers the young girl’s promise to call down a star by using Planet Befall from a distant cliff, sending a meteor into Cider Lake and frightening away the children mocking her. The event becomes a treasured memory for Fischl and precedes her later meeting with Ellin at the Adventurers’ Guild 433 435 436.
Final Calamity
A later calamity unleashes monsters across all Seven Nations, but Ellin’s advance warning allows their forces to prepare. Barbatos and Dvalin fight aerial monsters above Mondstadt, while Noelle, Fischl, and Sucrose protect civilians in designated shelters. Diluc, Kaeya, and Lisa each lead frontline squads, and Jean coordinates artillery support 450.
Shenhe freezes Cider Lake and the monsters within it, then joins Rosaria, Eula, and the Reconnaissance Company in clearing the frozen battlefield. Razor, Amber, Albedo, and the Knights fight in Wolvendom 450.
Diona and the Spring Fairy hold back monsters approaching from the south. Varka, recalled with his army after Ellin locates him through the authority of the Heavenly Principles, returns to defend the eastern side. The later account places Venti and Dvalin on the northern defense and Razor, Amber, and Albedo in the west, with fighting continuing across the surrounding fronts 451.
