Nature and Paths

  • Aeons embody concepts rather than merely possessing divine power. Ascension transforms an intelligent being into a different form of life, diluting the identity they possessed as a mortal 17 489.
  • A Path is a supreme cosmic law. An Aeon commands its power, while mortals access portions of that power by aligning themselves with the Path or receiving an Aeon’s gift 34 405.
  • Aeons are bound by their own Paths. Going against the concept they embody can cause them to fall. Herta describes this constraint as an absence of free will 86 89 210.
  • A Path survives its Aeon. Even after the god falls, later followers can continue drawing power from the law it established and potentially reach its summit 34 142.
  • Public knowledge is incomplete. Only a dozen or so Aeons are widely known; many never appear before humanity and are identified indirectly through traces of their influence 34.
  • Paths differ in breadth and strength. The Hunt is described as narrow and intensely aggressive, whereas Harmony encompasses a much broader concept 90 310.

Defining Aspects

A Path’s defining concept is generally expressed through three words. The first two guide alignment with the Path; the third expresses its fundamental ability 88 487.

Path Documented Aspects Manifestation
Abundance Selflessness, altruism, healing Healing injuries and sustaining life 98 110 487
Preservation Patience, sacrifice, protection Shields and defensive protection 172 487
The Hunt Decisiveness, ruthlessness, vengeance Aggressive attacks directed toward revenge 138 310
Destruction Third aspect: destruction Destructive power 487
Erudition Third aspect: strategy Identified as the Path’s fundamental aspect 487
Eyeless Blindness and obedience are its entry conditions Its deeper authority concerns observing and weaving fate 487 488

Power Progression

Chu Mu’s Documented Ascent

Chu Mu’s development illustrates the distinction between receiving a Path’s power, merging with a concept, and attaining complete authority over it.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Emanator of the unknown Eyeless Path 34 Awakens a gift from the fallen Aeon. With no living god supplying power, he must strengthen his own alignment with the Path.
Midpoint of the Eyeless Path 90 Can draw on at most half the Path’s power, but his combat strength remains below that of an Aeon-backed Emanator.
Merged with hope; initial approach to Aeon-level existence 308 310 His consciousness resides within hope, while his physical body functions as a puppet. He still lacks complete mastery over an entire concept.
Consciousness diluted into the Path 489 His individual form dissipates as the Path overwhelms his consciousness; he subsequently seems to exist everywhere.
Aeon commanding two Paths 490 Explicitly described as the sole remaining Aeon in the desolate world and the only Aeon commanding two Paths.
Star Shepherd, above the Aeons 490 Incorporates further concepts and uses Order to manage multiple Paths, producing a qualitative rise beyond Aeon-level existence.

Access to Path Power

Category Source of Power Limits
Worshipper Belief in an Aeon Worship alone does not establish recognition or grant Path power; the Architects demonstrate this distinction 172.
Pathstrider Alignment with a Path and an Aeon’s recognition Normally draws only a small portion of the Path’s power 34 312.
Emanator Power granted directly by an Aeon Strength depends on the Aeon’s grant and the recipient’s capacity to withstand it 34 444.
Aeon Complete mastery of at least one concept Commands a Path but is bound by its nature 89 310.

Origins and Ascension

Some Aeons were once human; others belonged to different species. Ascension occurs through merging with a philosophical concept and taking command of a Path, not simply by acquiring a powerful object 17 98.

Scholars associate the rise of Aeons with the Dusk War, hundreds of thousands of years earlier. One theory holds that Eldbeasts ruled the Sea of Stars before that war and that Aeons subsequently replaced them. Silver Wolf qualifies this account: Eldbeasts remained visible during the first few Amber Eras before becoming increasingly rare 84.

Documented Routes

  • Former mortal: The Hunt originated among the Xianzhou. Before ascending, the future Aeon was punished for attacking the Ambrosial Arbor; afterward, the Xianzhou adopted opposition to Abundance 32.
  • Former Eldbeast: Ouroboros retained the Eldbeasts’ appetite for devouring worlds after becoming the Aeon of Voracity 84.
  • Artificial intelligence: Nous originated as an enormous astral computer built by Zandar. The reason for its ascension remains unexplained 343.
  • Collective ascension: The Simulated Universe reenactment shows the Mother Tree, Number One, Number Six, and Number Seven forming Xipe as Taiyi is absorbed into Harmony 304.
  • Incubation and rebirth: Deep Blue Star functions as an Aeon incubator. The Blind Aeon arranged death and rebirth there in an attempt to gain control over their own fate 84 488.

Order’s Experiment

The God of Order transformed itself into a seed within a planet-sized Incubator, creating the Mother Tree and its experimental world. Its aim was to produce new Aeons under its own Order and thereby ascend beyond the Aeons 292.

  • Experimental offspring that showed no signs of becoming Aeons around age thirty were recalled to the Mother Tree and recycled as nutrients 293.
  • The Eye of Order could awaken within Taiyi and restore the sleeping deity 292 293.
  • Authority from Order was later implanted into Red Sun, laying the foundation for Chu Mu’s eventual mastery of multiple Paths 490.

Abilities and Limitations

Cosmic Authority

An Aeon’s power operates at the level of universal law rather than ordinary physical strength 405 489.

  • The Hunt’s arrow destroyed the Ambrosial Arbor on Sand Sea Planet along with the surrounding star system 418.
  • The Blind Aeon expanded their observational space across the universe to study and manipulate fate 488.
  • Yaoshi can restore the dead, far beyond the healing available to an ordinary Pathstrider such as Natasha 110.
  • The Red Sun’s authority over hope was valuable because it could provide an Aeon with an additional authority beyond their own Path 128.

Bestowing Power

Aeons can directly empower Emanators, including beings that are neither human nor conventionally intelligent 330.

  • Aha granted the power of an entire Path to a worm, temporarily making it equivalent to an Aeon 34.
  • The Ambrosial Arbor is treated as an Emanator-level source of Abundance despite being a tree 330.
  • An Emanator receiving an Aeon’s full power could theoretically match Aeon-level force 312 418.
  • Recipients cannot withstand unlimited power. The worm’s body burst, while Jing Yuan uses Divine Foresight to receive the Hunt’s power 444.

Conceptual Constraints

  • Self-contradiction: Betraying a Path can destroy an Aeon’s status and authority; lesser followers instead risk losing the power the Path grants them 89 448.
  • Overlapping concepts: A broader Path can subsume another. Harmony absorbed Order because its concept of family could include order without excluding disorder 304 305.
  • Limited control over beneficiaries: Propagation could not restrain the Swarm, while Yaoshi’s generosity produced selfish recipients whose actions contradicted Abundance’s ideals 330 448.
  • Fate: Even the Aeon of Weaving Fate could not observe or govern their own destiny. The Heterochromic-Eyed Man states that saving an Aeon from such a fate would require a being above the Aeons 488.

Known Aeons

Aeon Path Documented Role
Qlipoth Preservation Described as the oldest Aeon and a survivor of the Dusk War; worshipped by the Architects and the Interastral Peace Corporation 17 84 448.
Nanook Destruction Associated with the Antimatter Legion; a faction serving Destruction began the war that devastated Jarilo-VI seven hundred years earlier 17 449.
Yaoshi Abundance Embodies selflessness, altruism, and healing; grants blessings and is identified with the Lady from Chu Mu’s past 98 137.
Lan / Reignbow Arbiter The Hunt Hunts the Abominations of Abundance; their intervention can destroy allies and civilians along with the enemy 317 330.
Aha Elation Repeatedly interferes in Chu Mu’s journey and grants Elation power even to its detractors, the Mournful Actors 389 449.
Fuli Remembrance Supplies memories involved in Chu Mu’s journey and the Simulated Universe reenactment 129 305.
Tayzzyronth / Insect Emperor Propagation Unleashed the Swarm and was opposed by numerous Aeons; remnants survived after the fall 72 305 448.

Fall, Conflict, and Survival

Propagation’s Fall

Numerous Aeons united against Tayzzyronth after the Swarm threatened the Sea of Stars. Its unchecked expansion endangered civilizations, cosmic balance, Order, and the routes opened by Trailblaze 448.

Accounts emphasize Tayzzyronth’s separation from Propagation: merging rather than dividing contradicted the Path, while surrendering reproductive authority likewise meant abandoning it. Surviving fragments therefore no longer possessed a true Aeon’s command of the entire Path 72 448.

Order’s Absorption

Xipe’s birth subsumed Taiyi and the Path of Order. Order’s followers nevertheless survived, concealed themselves within the Family, and continued attempting to resurrect their deity in Penacony 304 493.

Death Does Not Erase a Path

  • The Astral Express continues drawing on Trailblaze after Akivili’s death 142.
  • The Vidyadhara retain access to Permanence after Long’s fall 336.
  • Chu Mu awakens as an Emanator of the fallen Eyeless Aeon 34.
  • Kafka proposes that a resurrected Aeon would be especially suited to reclaim its surviving Path; this is presented as a deduction about Deep Blue Star 84.

Mortal Followers and Worship

  • Belief is not recognition. An Architect can proclaim faith in Preservation without becoming a Pathstrider 172.
  • Followers need not reflect their god’s ideals. Yaoshi’s blessings require none of the selflessness or altruism needed to walk Abundance, allowing selfish beneficiaries to gain longevity 448.
  • Faction loyalty can enforce reverence. The Corporation punishes insults against Preservation, while a Lord Ravager and the Antimatter Legion may retaliate against those who denounce Nanook 449.
  • Divine intervention can be indiscriminate. The Reignbow Arbiter’s arrow at Fanghu destroyed enemy forces, hundreds of thousands of allied pilots, and part of the Xianzhou ship 330.
  • Akivili was an exception to divine aloofness. They adventured and celebrated with their followers, and their routes enabled ordinary people—not only empowered beings—to travel between worlds 142 379.

Research and Story Role

The Simulated Universe

Herta and colleagues from the Genius Society built the Simulated Universe to investigate how Aeons are born, why they arise, and what purpose their existence serves 210.

  • Its virtual Aeons correspond to real Aeons, including fallen ones 210.
  • Participants wear Aeon disguises to attract the simulations’ attention 210.
  • Stelle uses Akivili’s identity; March 7th uses Idrila’s 210.
  • Herta reduces the virtual Aha’s intelligence after signs that it might escape the simulation 210.
  • Following the reenactment, Herta identifies Yaoshi, Fuli, and Aha as involved and infers Xipe’s tacit approval 305.

Chu Mu’s Revival

Aeon intervention drives Chu Mu’s search for his identity. His past incarnation initially claims that Yaoshi, Aha, and Fuli intend to resurrect him through Chu Mu; later revelations distinguish their competing interests 89 488.

  • Yaoshi blinds Chu Mu, placing him on the Eyeless Path 35 488.
  • Fuli supplies memories that guide his investigation 129 305.
  • Aha repeatedly participates in the schemes surrounding Deep Blue Star, Sand Sea Planet, and the Simulated Universe 389.
  • The Heterochromic-Eyed Man later accuses Aha of likely using Propagation’s corpse to force Chu Mu’s premature emergence 488.
  • Chu Mu’s final expansion beyond Aeon-level existence realizes the goal of Order’s ancient experiment 490.
