Chapters 251–275 Vol. 3 Read

Ch. 251The Great Dragons Unleashed Their Might

Antheros, Himolos, and Aposos battled and ate sea monsters while the Ironborn fleet entered Oldtown's harbor. Rouge's garrison repelled the attackers with wildfire ballistae, setting monsters and longships ablaze.

  • Antheros hunted and devoured the heads of sea monsters, while Himolos attacked and ate a much larger one.
  • Aposos killed a giant sea monster after its tentacles coiled around him, then landed on a reef to feast.
  • The sea monsters tore away the chain blocking the river, allowing the remaining Iron Islands Longships to enter Oldtown's harbor.
  • Earl Drum and the other leaders discussed Oldtown's defenses, but Verehos ordered Rhodos to use the sea monsters to destroy the docks.
  • The monsters' waves smashed most of Oldtown's piers, but the Dragonstone Defensive Wall held against them.
  • Rouge ordered the garrison to fire its wildfire ballistae, striking sea monsters and setting more than a dozen Iron Islands Longships ablaze.

Ch. 252The sudden surge of magical energy

The Ironborn fleet suffered heavy losses from Oldtown’s wildfire as Verehos urged his warriors to trust in the Drowned God. Beneath the city, a vast surge of magical energy began affecting Amoros, her dragon eggs, the Targaryen children, and raven eggs, leaving the source and consequences of the surge unfolding.

  • Gansor explained the wildfire’s power to the Ironborn leaders, while Verehos rallied them to keep faith in the Drowned God despite their losses.
  • Danyla’s household registration and evacuation system moved Oldtown’s residents into prepared underground shelters in less than two hours.
  • Rhaella and her siblings began feeling hot, cold, and increasingly powerful heartbeats while sheltering underground.
  • Magical energy poured from the weirwood beside the Hightower into Amoros and the five dragon eggs, leaving Amoros ravenously hungry.
  • Maester Ruiven discovered that all the raven eggs on Raven Island had begun hatching ahead of schedule as Oldtown’s weirwoods absorbed the surging magical energy.

Ch. 253Six Hatchling Dragons

A sudden tide of magical energy hatched ten white ravens and six dragon hatchlings from five eggs beneath the Hightower. As sea monsters charged Oldtown, Amoros hunted one for food and returned to feed her hungry newborns.

  • The ten remaining white raven eggs hatched, and the raven chicks began demanding food from their caretakers.
  • Amoros felt the magical energy surge through her and the five dragon eggs beneath the weirwood, which hatched six strong, unusually large dragons, including golden and yellow twins.
  • Amoros left for Oldtown's docks to satisfy her hunger while Aposos, Antheros, and Himolos resumed fighting the empowered sea monsters in Whispering Bay.
  • The sea monsters grew more savage and charged toward Oldtown, while Amoros caught one and burned its head before eating it despite its tentacles constricting her.
  • Amoros returned to the weirwood dragonpit and fed pieces of the sea monster to her six hungry hatchlings.

Ch. 254The Hunt Continued

Amoros and her hatchlings grew stronger by feeding on sea monsters and the magical energy around the weirwood, while the remaining monsters became more resistant to wildfire and attacked Oldtown's docks. Antheros and Aposos killed sea monsters, but Himolos was trapped by a giant creature's tentacles as more monsters closed in, prompting Rouge to order the ballista crews to fire.

  • Amoros finished digesting a sea monster, then flew back to Oldtown's docks with her five rapidly growing hatchlings.
  • Rouge ordered the ballista crews to fire wildfire-laden bolts at the sea monsters, but their magical energy helped them withstand the flames and heal their wounds.
  • Antheros seized a wounded sea monster, killed it with dragonfire, and carried it away to eat.
  • Himolos attacked a giant octopus at the docks, crushed its head, but was burned by wildfire and pinned down by its tentacles.
  • Aposos killed another sea monster and began eating it while Himolos remained trapped and more sea monsters approached.
  • Rouge ordered the ballista crews to target the sea monsters closing in on Himolos.

Ch. 255The monster beneath Oldtown

Oldtown’s defenders and the great dragons destroyed the sea monster army, though wildfire and the creatures’ attacks caused heavy casualties and damage. As the Ironborn watched, the city and sea began to shake, and a vast shape emerged in black vapor from beneath Oldtown.

  • Rouge ordered the ballista crews to fire wildfire-loaded bolts at the six sea monsters attacking Oldtown’s docks.
  • The burning sea monsters smashed parts of the dragonstone walls and wildfire stores, killing hundreds of guards and forcing Rouge to lead survivors underground.
  • Amoros and Himolos devoured the burning sea monsters, while Antheros and Aposos killed the last two still thrashing.
  • The Ironborn watched the sea monsters die, and Verehos announced that something was coming as the magical-energy tide surged.
  • Oldtown and the surrounding sea shook, cracks split the streets, and black vapor rose from underground with an enormous shape writhing within it.

Ch. 256This world was too crazy

A grotesque monster emerged in Oldtown, destroying the city and attacking the great dragons as it drew people toward it. A golden hoop suddenly appeared and dissolved the monster, leaving Vaegon gravely wounded and the dragons recovering from the golden energy.

  • Amoros fled Oldtown with the hatchlings after sensing evil power, while Aposos, Antheros, and Himolos watched the black vapor rising over the city.
  • A gigantic, corpse-like monster emerged, drew people toward it with its gaze, and crushed Oldtown before plunging into the harbor and capsizing the Archipelago Fleet.
  • Antheros dived to stop Vaegon from approaching the monster, but a tentacle seized and hurled her away.
  • Aposos and Himolos attacked the monster with dragonfire, but it caught both dragons in its tentacles.
  • A golden hoop flew over the monster and dissolved it, releasing golden energy that healed Antheros and drew Amoros back with her hatchlings.
  • Antheros found Vaegon barely alive after the monster's tentacle spikes had severed both his legs.

Ch. 257The Dragons' Fortuitous Opportunity

The Heavenly Golden Hoop converted the hideous monster’s energy into golden nourishment, rapidly healing and transforming Antheros and the dragons around Oldtown. As the battle continued, Aposos and Himolos remained gravely wounded, while Amoros brought her six hatchlings to feed and grow.

  • The Heavenly Golden Hoop shrank the hideous monster and spread golden energy that healed wounded sea monsters and strengthened Antheros, who fed on the revived creatures.
  • Aposos fought the hideous monster’s tentacles despite his wounds, while Himolos escaped one tentacle and burned it, though both dragons remained near death.
  • Golden energy surged toward Himolos’s belly and formed five vortices.
  • Amoros returned to Oldtown with her six hatchlings, whose bodies grew larger and developed three toes under the golden energy.
  • Amoros fed her hatchlings pieces of sea monster, and the golden, green, blue, white, red, and yellow dragons jostled or settled into places to eat.

Ch. 258Life and Death Turn, Rise and Fall Fade

The Great Dragons fought to survive as Amoros’s hatchlings rapidly grew, while Aposos and Himolos died from their wounds. Their souls entered two of Himolos’s seven eggs, which hatched into dragons resembling them.

  • Amoros fed her rapidly growing hatchlings and hunted another sea monster as their hunger continued.
  • Antheros attacked the transformed squid restrained by the Golden Hoop, but it escaped beneath the sea after spraying black ink.
  • Antheros rescued the unconscious Aposos and tried to wake him, while his life continued to fade; Himolos drew in golden energy as her own strength failed.
  • Himolos laid seven crimson eggs that absorbed the golden energy, and Rouge emerged from the underground chamber to find Aposos and Himolos dead.
  • Aposos’s and Himolos’s souls entered separate eggs, which hatched into red dragons resembling the two deceased Great Dragons.

Ch. 259The final outcome

After the monster devastated Oldtown Bay, the golden energy healed many wounded survivors, though thousands had died. The surviving Ironborn tried to seize Oldtown, but Rouge’s Garrison ambushed them as Amoros cared for the newly hatched dragons.

  • Several hundred Ironborn and hundreds of Oldtown Garrison soldiers survived their injuries, while the disaster killed thousands in Oldtown and nearly wiped out the Ironborn expedition.
  • Rouge embraced his returning men, ordered the Holy Flame Fleet to be notified, and prepared the Garrison to defend Oldtown from the Ironborn.
  • Gansor and Earl Drum urged the surviving Ironborn to capture Oldtown, while Rhodos sat dazed with the Kraken Horn and Verehos joined the advance.
  • Amoros burned Rhodos and swallowed him with the damaged Kraken Horn, then fed roasted monster tentacle to the hatchlings from Himolos's Dragon Eggs.
  • Rouge’s Garrison unleashed arrows on the Ironborn as they approached the docks, killing more than half before over a thousand defenders surrounded those who reached shore.

Ch. 260A stalemate

Rouge defeated the Ironborn at Oldtown, while the dragons fed on the sea monster and its remains; six hatchlings emerged and joined the brood. As Oldtown rebuilt, conflict spread through the Riverlands, leaving the Seven Kingdoms braced for a wider crisis.

  • Rouge captured the Ironborn and secured three Valyrian weapons, though he worried about how to explain the deaths of the two great dragons to Her Highness.
  • Six hatchlings flew to the bay, breathed dragonfire for the first time, and joined Antheros and Amoros in devouring the sea monster’s remains.
  • Rouge directed the salvage of Oldtown’s ships, and Mungo and other vassals arrived to help rebuild the city.
  • The Dragonkeepers had the two great dragons forge dragonstone from the rubble, while Amoros and her brood settled by Himolos’s body and Rouge preserved Aposos’s body underground.
  • Reports of the Ironborn attack spread as rival forces gathered near High Heart, the Poor Fellows persisted, and House Brune invaded House Blackwood’s lands.
  • King Jaehaerys issued only verbal warnings, and cautious houses sealed themselves off as unrest threatened to engulf the Seven Kingdoms.

Ch. 261Arrival in Braavos

Danyla arrived off Braavos with the Holy Flame Fleet after a day and night of sailing. The chapter recounted Braavos’s founding by escaped slaves and described the city’s laws, government, and prosperity.

  • Myracis took Hognara and the others hunting in nearby waters, while Jormungava and Jormungar caught large fish for breakfast.
  • Dreamfyre returned from the Shivering Sea with a killer whale for the great dragons.
  • Danyla arrived off the coast of Braavos with the Holy Flame Fleet.
  • Braavos’s escaped-slave founders settled the mist-shrouded islands after following the Moon Singers’ prophecy.
  • Braavos became a wealthy trading city, established the First Law against slavery, and came under the rule of a Sealord chosen for life.

Ch. 262The Sealord in His Twilight Years

Sealord Utherys Reyaan prepared to welcome Princess Danyla to Braavos while keeping House Velaryon away from her. Danyla arrived with her dragons, displayed her power at the Sealord’s Palace, and left Utherys and Uthenia to understand that Braavos could avoid trouble by meeting her demands.

  • Utherys ordered Uthenia and Utheryan to welcome Danyla and told Larel to send House Velaryon’s people away.
  • Uthenia and the reluctantly summoned, drunken Utheryan joined their father to greet the princess.
  • Danyla’s fleet passed the Titan of Braavos as Dreamfyre flew over it, and the Sealord’s envoys guided the fleet directly to Purple Harbor without customs inspection.
  • Utherys and his family welcomed Danyla at the quay while Dreamfyre landed on the dome of the Sealord’s Palace.
  • Danyla warned Utherys with pointed remarks about her dragons’ power and offered one gold dragon to pay for their food.
  • Uthenia graciously arranged to feed the dragons, and Danyla made clear that she had come for material gain rather than violence.

Ch. 263The magnificent Menagerie

Danyla toured the Sealord's Menagerie with Uthenia and Utheryan, discovering its rare animals and birds from across the world. She sensed faint magical energy in the talking macaws, and the tour ended after the group waited in vain to see the resting thylacines.

  • Uthenia welcomed Danyla to the Sealord's Palace and offered to show her the Menagerie after lunch.
  • Uthenia and Utheryan led Danyla's party through the Menagerie, where Utheryan proudly described its animals.
  • Walda dismissed the creatures as food for dragons, and Utheryan quickly agreed with her.
  • Danyla sensed faint magical energy in the macaws that greeted the visitors in Valyrian.
  • Utheryan showed the group exotic birds, grazing animals, striped deer, and predators, then they left the thylacine enclosure after waiting nearly an hour without seeing one emerge.

Ch. 264Little Valyrians

Danyla and her companions watched a little Valyrian give birth to twins, but the mother rejected the platinum-furred second baby. Danyla calmed and fed the newborn, who clung to her afterward.

  • Utheryan recommended the little Valyrians, and Danyla and her companions visited their enclosure.
  • The keeper confirmed that the female lemur was about to give birth and prepared food for her.
  • The female lemur safely delivered a silvery-white baby, then gave birth to a second baby after a difficult labor.
  • The mother rejected the platinum-furred, deep-purple-eyed newborn, so the keeper took him out and tried to feed him goat's milk.
  • Danyla held the crying baby, calmed him with her magical energy, and fed him; afterward, he refused to leave her.

Ch. 265Spotted Wyvern

Danyla adopted a little Valyrian lemur and named him Lukao before a Spotted Long-Winged Dragon attacked the Menagerie. After the beast killed several guards, Danyla struck it with fire magic and tried to deter it by setting nearby trees ablaze.

  • Danyla took the little Valyrian lemur with her, named him Lukao, and began the journey back from the Menagerie.
  • A Spotted Long-Winged Dragon swooped down, and Danyla led Bethany and the female soldiers into the bushes while Uthenia, Utheryan, and their guards fled toward the monkey enclosure.
  • The Spotted Long-Winged Dragon seized and killed several of the Sealord's Palace guards before Uthenia and the others reached shelter.
  • The dragon searched for more prey and dove toward Danyla's group, but Danyla hit its head with a fire seed and drove it back into the sky.
  • Danyla set nearby trees alight in an attempt to frighten the enraged dragon away.

Ch. 266The Dragons' Hunting Hour

Danyla let Dreamfyre hunt the Sealord's Palace Menagerie after the Spotted Long-Winged Dragon attacked, and the dragons began devouring its magical creatures. Hognara survived a basilisk's ambush, and Danyla had the carcass saved for potion ingredients.

  • Dreamfyre caught and ate the Spotted Long-Winged Dragon, then Danyla allowed her to hunt through the Menagerie.
  • Dreamfyre burned the creatures in the river valley while Myracis, Hogras, Hogdera, and Hognara searched for prey and displayed their abilities.
  • Hogdera swallowed dragonfire, while Hognara froze attacking crocodiles and roasted them with dragonfire.
  • An adult basilisk ambushed Hognara, but she evaded it and set it ablaze with dragonfire.
  • Myracis crushed the wounded basilisk's head, and Danyla had Walda remove its venom sac and internal organs for potions.

Ch. 267Hunting in the Menagerie

Danyla's dragons hunted through Braavos's Menagerie, devouring its magical and enormous beasts after another apparent accident. She warned Uthenia that Braavos must explain what happened and suggested Lord Utherys might have lost control of the city, leaving Uthenia furious and shaken.

  • After the dragons finished eating the River Valley's creatures, Danyla led Dreamfyre, Myracis, Hognara, and the other young dragons into the Beast Zone to hunt its beasts.
  • Myracis chased down rat-pigs while Dreamfyre hunted larger prey, and the dragons consumed or carried off most of the beasts in the zone.
  • The dragons' feeding left almost nothing in the Beast Zone except cattle and sheep, and Uthenia and Utheryan arrived with guards to find them.
  • Uthenia approached Danyla and expressed relief that she was unharmed, but Danyla refused to hear an explanation until the dragons had eaten.
  • Danyla accused Braavos of allowing another accident to happen, warned that Lord Utherys might have lost control of the city, and left on Dreamfyre to pursue an elephant.
  • After Danyla departed, guards caught the trembling Uthenia as she angrily questioned how anyone could risk enraging the Targaryen royal house.

Ch. 268The bells of Braavos

Sealord Utherys summoned Braavos’s magisters, Keyholders, and powerful families to address the Menagerie fire and the Faceless Men’s assassination attempt in King’s Landing. The meeting ended without agreement, as hardliners pushed to defy Danyla and House Targaryen while Utherys urged them to consider an explanation and compensation.

  • Utherys ordered the Bell of Truth rung to summon Braavos’s leaders to the Palace of Truth.
  • At the assembly, Utherys asked the gathered magisters and Keyholders about the Menagerie fire and the release of the Spotted Long-Winged Dragon.
  • Ferdinand Antaryon helped Utherys warn that the latest incident could worsen tensions with Danyla and House Targaryen.
  • Otherys and another magister argued that Braavos should rely on its weapons and resist Targaryen influence.
  • A merchant magister warned that House Targaryen had more than twenty Great Dragons, while a Keyholder suggested eliminating the threat.
  • Utherys urged the assembly to plan an explanation and compensation for the Faceless Men’s assassination attempt and the latest accident, but the leaders failed to reach a consensus.

Ch. 269What dazzling fireworks!

Danyla used her Great Dragons to destroy the House of Black and White with an explosion of flour, sulfur, and wildfire. The blast illuminated Braavos and left the temple and its occupants in ruins.

  • Back aboard her ship, Danyla told Walda that the pterosaur attack was likely carried out by the Faceless Men and planned to give them a real accident in return.
  • After the debate ended without a decision, Utherys considered using Braavos to serve his own interests as the Sealord’s power faded.
  • Danyla surveyed the House of Black and White through Dreamfyre and waited until the concealed Faceless Men had gathered inside.
  • Dreamfyre dropped sacks of flour and sulfur onto the temple while Little Balerion and the other dragons smashed its roof with boulders.
  • Myracis dropped wildfire into the dust-filled temple, triggering a massive explosion that shattered windows across Braavos.
  • Danyla watched the blast and called it beautiful fireworks.

Ch. 270The Fall of the House of Black and White

Danyla and her dragons destroyed the House of Black and White in a catastrophic blast that devastated much of Braavos. Hogdera secretly devoured the strange flames in the ruins, grew rapidly, and fell asleep while absorbing the resulting surge of magical energy.

  • A dark power awakened beneath the House of Black and White, and Danyla chanted a sacrificial incantation as Dreamfyre and the other dragons unleashed a second, more powerful blast.
  • The explosions destroyed the House of Black and White, collapsed the Sanctuary of the Blessed, and caused widespread deaths and damage across Braavos.
  • Sealord Utherys welcomed the destruction as retribution, while Hogdera slipped away during Danyla and the others' distraction.
  • Hogdera reached the ruins and devoured the black flames and other fires, causing him to grow larger and develop thick scales, barbs, and bone spurs.
  • After returning at sunrise, Hogdera fell asleep to digest the magical energy, and Danyla realized he might grow larger than his sisters once he absorbed it.

Ch. 271A day in Braavos (Part one)

Danyla toured Braavos after breakfast while the Holy Flame Fleet’s merchants prepared to trade, then visited the ruins of the House of Black and White. The chapter left her meeting Sealord Utherys and Braavos’s prominent figures amid the wreckage.

  • Danyla and her companions ate seafood caught by Jormungava and Jormungar, then she left Hogdera with Hognara and Hogras while Cameron of Tarth stayed behind to meet merchants.
  • Danyla’s party sailed from Purple Harbor past Ragpicker’s Quay and the statues along Braavos’s main canal toward the Isles of the Gods.
  • Danyla saw the smoke and devastation left after the House of Black and White had been destroyed the previous night.
  • Danyla went ashore with Hognara, Hogras, Walda, and her Personal Guards, and the crowd made way for her and the young dragons.
  • Sealord Utherys introduced Danyla to Braavos’s prominent figures gathered at the ruins, including members of old founding families and wealthy newcomers.

Ch. 272A Day in Braavos (Part Two)

Danyla used the destruction of the House of Black and White to secure an alliance with Sealord Utherys and land in Braavos for rebuilding temples. She toured the city and promoted Holy Flame Island’s goods, while the Faceless Men’s resentment remained a threat beneath the surface.

  • Danyla feigned surprise at the destruction of the House of Black and White and offered to help rebuild the collapsed Sanctuary of the Blessed.
  • Danyla proposed rebuilding the Sanctuary on land in Braavos, and Sealord Utherys agreed to give her the property and arrange for craftsmen.
  • Danyla recognized that Utherys had committed to an alliance with her, while Otherys and other governors privately objected to the land grant.
  • Danyla toured the Long Canal with Utherys, governors, and leading house members, observing Braavos’s wealth and its poor, neglected outskirts.
  • Danyla promoted Holy Flame Island’s products, and Governor Antaryon signed numerous orders with her.
  • The Braavosi leaders outwardly set aside the destruction of the House of Black and White, though they knew the Faceless Men would resent Danyla.

Ch. 273Business first

Danyla confronted Braavos’s leaders over the Faceless Men’s assassination attempt and warned them against threatening House Targaryen, while steering the visit toward trade. The Sealord promised an explanation as Danyla prepared to discuss business and restore peace.

  • Governor Patyrius mocked Danyla over the dragon’s rampage and the destruction of the House of Black and White, but Sealord Utherys pushed him away and explained his family’s standing.
  • Danyla warned Utherys that she would retaliate against anyone who falsely accused or cheated her, and compared Braavos’s deterrents with House Targaryen’s dragons.
  • Utherys promised that Braavos would investigate the Faceless Men’s assassination attempt in King’s Landing and give Danyla a satisfactory answer.
  • Danyla said she wanted the mastermind found so Braavos and the Seven Kingdoms could return to peace, then proposed discussing trade and sharing Holy Flame Island’s goods.

Ch. 274A Bright Spark's Sudden Inspiration

Danyla took the Sealord and Braavosi governors on a flight aboard Dreamfyre, using the occasion to secure their political support. In the sky, Governor Antaryon wondered whether a falling star had destroyed the House of Black and White, and Utherys suggested that divine punishment was possible.

  • Danyla invited Utherys to ride Dreamfyre for free and offered Governor Antaryon a ride for two hundred thousand Gold Dragons.
  • Utherys encouraged governors from allied houses to join the flight, and Governors Planellis and Prestan arrived, bringing nine of the thirteen great houses to his side.
  • Danyla flew Dreamfyre nearly a thousand meters above Braavos with the governors aboard.
  • Governor Antaryon speculated that a falling star might have destroyed the House of Black and White, citing deaths caused by falling stars in Oldtown.
  • Utherys said the gods might punish those who offended them and noted that House Targaryen was regarded as closest to the gods because it commanded Great Dragons.

Ch. 275An understanding on dragonback

Danyla toured Braavos on Dreamfyre with Sealord Utherys and other leaders, whose jokes about House Pattirios hinted at a future feud. She then kept a low profile while building the Sanctuary of the Blessed, and the Holy Flame Fleet’s trade flourished as the great houses sent gifts and dragon-riding fees.

  • Antalion argued that any overseas trade or feud could be settled with enough money, and Utherys praised his newfound wisdom as the others understood their implication.
  • Danyla flew over the Pattirios estate, where Utherys and the others mocked the family and spread rumors about its lineage and descendants.
  • Danyla returned to her ship without joining Utherys for dinner, wary of retaliation from surviving Faceless Men after the House of Black and White was destroyed.
  • Danyla spent the following week forging Dragonstone, overseeing the Sanctuary of the Blessed, training, and hunting with Dreamfyre and her companions.
  • Braavos’s great houses bought the Holy Flame Fleet’s goods and sent dragon-riding fees and gifts, while Utherys sent chests of jewels and Valyrian antiques.
  • Bethany admired the gifts, and Danyla recognized a jade necklace from the Golden Empire and wondered whether her appetite would alarm Utherys.
