Background / History

Staged Death and Return to Konoha

Leaf Dragon’s apparent death while protecting Jiraiya was staged to teach the boy a lesson. Jiraiya nevertheless believed he had lost his protector and returned to Konoha overwhelmed by guilt. Hiruzen reinforced the operative’s heroic reputation, describing him as a loyal ninja with a perfect mission record and telling Jiraiya that he had been an orphan without family 55.

Watanabe Ichiro later returned to the Hokage’s office in the Leaf Dragon disguise. He claimed that his death record had concealed a long-term undercover assignment in the Shadow Organization, ordered during Uchiha Ichiro’s administration. Hiruzen and Danzō initially lacked reliable information about him, but accepted his identity after he revealed embarrassing private stories about them 99.

Medical Work and the “Treatment” of His Personality

Leaf Dragon became head of Konoha’s Medical Department, freely shared Medical Ninjutsu, and began writing a medical textbook. Tsunade recognized his name through Jiraiya, and Ichiro enlisted her help in easing Jiraiya’s worries while temporarily keeping his return secret. After reuniting with Jiraiya, he gave him a chakra-linked protective crystal and reported that the boy’s psychological block had eased 110 117.

Tsunade and Dan Katō’s companionship appeared to bring out a personality distinct from Teacher Yilong’s, although Leaf Dragon became increasingly terse and expressionless. When Hiruzen and Danzō’s involvement in testing him came to light, Ichiro used the encounter to portray a devastating loss of trust. Hiruzen concluded that Konoha had reduced Leaf Dragon to an obedient weapon; the narration explicitly presents Hiruzen’s explanation as overthinking rather than an unquestionable account of Leaf Dragon’s inner state 122 124 125.

Danzō transferred him to Root and ordered him to improve tailed-beast sealing so ordinary ninja could use tailed-beast power. Leaf Dragon retained an honorary advisory position in the Medical Department, but his regular lessons with Tsunade and Dan ended. His friends continued visiting and exchanging gifts with him, and Jiraiya found comfort in their companionship when he visited Leaf Dragon’s quarters 137 145.

Capture by Black Zetsu

Mito Uzumaki created a sealing formula intended to restore human emotions to Leaf Dragon. Under the influence of Black Zetsu’s technique, Jiraiya tried to exploit Leaf Dragon’s trauma to force him into safety. Their confrontation shattered Mito’s formula, leaving Leaf Dragon kneeling and asking for orders 152.

Black Zetsu subsequently possessed Leaf Dragon, attacked Jiraiya, and threatened to cut Leaf Dragon’s throat to prevent pursuit. Jiraiya’s resulting despair culminated in a suicide attempt; Ichiro used the Crystal Stone to heal him afterward. Black Zetsu imposed numerous restraints on the Leaf Dragon disguise, including hypnotic genjutsu, a lethal heart seal, poison, an explosive collar, and an electroshock device 155 156.

While the physical body remained with Black Zetsu, a translucent Leaf Dragon appeared beside Jiraiya. He explained that his spirit and body had temporarily separated, confirmed that he had saved Jiraiya, and later made himself known to Dan Katō. The spirit accompanied Jiraiya while the body continued serving Black Zetsu 165 167.

Service in the Jashin Cult

Black Zetsu assigned Leaf Dragon to administer the Jashin Cult while he cared for the stolen Uzumaki child, Yin. Leaf Dragon handled its affairs efficiently, but Black Zetsu continued testing his loyalty, including ordering him to execute a former Konoha medical deputy. Leaf Dragon obeyed without hesitation 175.

Years of poison, overwork, and punishment wore down his body. Yin’s false accusations became another pretext for punishment, and Black Zetsu repeatedly mistook obedience for proof that his suspicions had been unfounded. When Leaf Dragon’s exceptional sealing talent became apparent, Black Zetsu regretted having depleted the vitality of someone who might have been useful in researching Kaguya’s seal 183 185 202.

Leaf Dragon captured Hōzuki Gengetsu, subdued the ninja pursuing him, and sealed the Three-Tails. Loaned to Gengetsu afterward, he killed every opponent named on the Mizukage’s list. He rejected an offer to escape Black Zetsu’s control and instead requested intelligence on the Six-Tails 203 204 205.

Return as an Enemy-Controlled Operative

Leaf Dragon enabled Black Zetsu to pass through Konoha’s barrier. Behind the scenes, the disguise coordinated with Ichiro’s Longjian disguise, confirming that Konoha’s preparations were ready before allowing Black Zetsu inside 229 230.

His apparent rescue of Shisui Uchiha initially convinced Hiruzen and Tsunade that he had returned as an ally. Sakumo noticed that his positioning contradicted his usual habits and suspected enemy control. Leaf Dragon then used familiar teasing to make Sakumo hesitate, seized White Fang, and stabbed him in the chest under Black Zetsu’s counterattack order 235 236 240 241.

When Hiruzen ordered Leaf Dragon to surrender his weapons and Shisui, he immediately began complying. Black Zetsu activated the heart seal and forcibly possessed him to override that obedience. The subsequent escape left Leaf Dragon feverish, with his organs beginning to fail; Black Zetsu eventually ordered him to rest 241 244 245.

Final Confrontations and Restoration

Leaf Dragon treated the captive Dan Katō and disclosed that both of them carried controlling heart seals. Later, while pursuing the Two-Tails, he fought Jiraiya, captured Matatabi, and used the threat of his own death to resist capture. His accompanying spirit warned Jiraiya that the body retained his deception skills and urged him not to prioritize taking it alive 253 266 267 268.

As Leaf Dragon’s spirit faded, Orochimaru, the sages, and Konoha’s researchers failed to find a way to preserve it. Meanwhile, his physical body defeated Dan Katō when Dan tried to infiltrate Konoha. Leaf Dragon subsequently displayed an independent will in front of Black Zetsu, exposing that his apparent submission had not told the whole story 281 283.

Leaf Dragon reappeared before Jiraiya without detectable signs of life and insisted that he was neither an illusion nor an impostor. By the aftermath, his body had reverted to childhood and his lingering injuries had healed. Uchiha Ichiro praised him for fulfilling his role as their last resort. He returned to Konoha and reunited with Sakumo, who initially mistook him for Leaf Dragon’s son and then his younger brother 284 294 296.

Kakashi’s Birthday — Side Story

During Kakashi’s fifth birthday celebration, Leaf Dragon returned after five years away, bloodied and late because he had been attacked. Sakumo and Chidori Cloud welcomed him home. He introduced himself to Kakashi by codename, entertained the family with stories, and quietly delivered five years of intelligence for Chidori to record 194 195.

He refused to reveal his personal name or remain in Konoha while his mission was unfinished, promising Sakumo that he would try to return alive. The side story identifies this as Kakashi’s first and last meeting with him 195.

Appearance

  • Adult features: A black-haired young man with dark eyes, a subdued presence, and a frequently cold or vacant expression 139.
  • ANBU attire: Konoha ANBU uniform and a mask bearing a black dragon pattern 99.
  • Hands: Faintly scarred palms; wears black, fingerless Tactical Gloves 195.
  • Declining condition: His hair becomes partly white and later fully white, while his frame grows thin and his complexion markedly pale 183 204 235 245.
  • Restored form: Returns in a child-sized body, with poorly fitting clothes and a stern expression that makes him resemble a miniature adult 294 296.

Personality

Leaf Dragon’s public warmth is often deliberate performance. He can make strangers feel familiar with him almost immediately, direct a conversation without attracting suspicion, and imitate another person convincingly. Dan Katō initially interprets this ease as proof of his excellence as an intelligence operative, while Leaf Dragon later tells Jiraiya that his familiar public manner is an act 100 120 139 164.

His less accommodating side is terse, demanding, and impatient with slow progress. He treats visiting children harshly partly because he wants them to grow strong enough to break free of their restrictions. His teaching also assumes an exceptional learning pace: Yin struggles with lessons modeled on Leaf Dragon’s own childhood training, and even Black Zetsu asks him to slow down 125 198 200.

Beneath the controlled presentation, he is playful and easily embarrassed by affection. He teases Sakumo, becomes awkward under Jiraiya’s grateful attention, and protests when Jiraiya displays his restored child form to the others. His spirit also shows unusually strong feeling when discussing threats to Konoha, which Jiraiya reads as deep love for the village 137 165 189 294.
