Background / History

Academy rivalry

Baoguo became the highest-ranked student in his Academy year after Kakashi graduated early. He consistently placed first in assessments, and his performance helped Teacher Liangtian earn outstanding-homeroom-teacher bonuses 4 6.

He challenged Obito to ninja-tool throwing and a subsequent sparring match, wagering a month of school toilet cleaning. Expecting an easy victory over the class’s perennial last-place student, he scored 95 in kunai throwing—only for Obito to score a perfect 100 3 4.

During their spar, Baoguo escalated from basic punches and kicks to his Lightning Five-Strike Whip. Obito activated his Three-Tomoe Sharingan, evaded his attacks, and repeatedly struck his face. Although Baoguo recognized that he could not win, taunts from Obito and their classmates persuaded him to continue 5 6.

Obito then placed him under a genjutsu that made him believe he was a prostitute. Baoguo tore his clothing and made advances toward Liangtian, who restrained him while Kurenai dispelled the illusion. Once freed, Baoguo remembered his actions and tried to attack Obito again, but Liangtian stopped him. His humiliation damaged his standing among his classmates 6 7.

Failed retaliation

Baoguo honored the toilet-cleaning wager, with Mizuki staying behind to help him. He nevertheless sought revenge through Danzō, embellishing his account of the fight and asking his uncle to have Obito beaten. Danzō refused, becoming more interested in recruiting Obito into Root than avenging his nephew 8 9 14.

Baoguo subsequently sent three Shimura Clan subordinates to confront Obito outside Ichiraku Ramen. They disguised themselves as villagers and falsely accused him of stealing 200,000 ryō. After Obito exposed their connection to Baoguo, they attacked him and Kurenai; Obito defeated all three 15 16 17.

The incident reached the Hokage’s office through Uchiha Fugaku and Kurenai. Danzō brought Baoguo before Hiruzen and forced him to apologize. Obito accepted the apology but mocked him for relying on adults to settle a school rivalry 18 19 20.

Danzō’s scapegoat

After Root operatives failed to assassinate Obito, Danzō blamed Baoguo’s grudge for the attack. The accusation was treated as an explanation despite Baoguo lacking the authority to command Root’s elite ninja, and he was detained for a time 37 44.

Baoguo later revealed under Sharingan interrogation that Danzō had instructed him to accept responsibility for unspecified Root affairs. In exchange, Danzō promised advanced ninjutsu and personal instruction after his release. Baoguo had not been told about the assassination attempt; Obito concluded that he had no involvement in it 45.

Chūnin Exam encounter

Baoguo entered the Forest of Death with Mizuki and Midori Nara. By then, Obito’s victories over his clan subordinates and Root operatives had made him genuinely afraid of his former classmate 43.

When Obito pursued him, Baoguo abandoned Midori while she attempted to hold Obito back. He then threw Mizuki toward Obito to delay the chase. Neither betrayal secured his escape 44.

Obito caught him, used genjutsu to investigate his detention, and confiscated his Earth Scroll. Despite learning that Baoguo was innocent of the assassination attempt, Obito continued beating him until Rin intervened 45.

Appearance

• Clothing: Wears a brown kimono, which he tears to tatters while under Obito’s Academy genjutsu 7.
• Injuries: His confrontations with Obito leave his face visibly bruised and swollen 6 9 45.

Personality

Baoguo is proud of his academic standing and deeply concerned with his public image. He initially treats Obito as an inferior, resents losing the spotlight to him, and continues a hopeless spar rather than appear frightened before their classmates 3 5 6.

His concern for reputation also makes him keep his wager. Even when Liangtian is absent, he insists on cleaning the toilets because breaking his promise would make him a laughingstock 14.

He is vindictive when humiliated, seeking help from his uncle and later sending clan adults after Obito. Once he becomes afraid of Obito, self-preservation overrides loyalty: he abandons Midori and sacrifices Mizuki to slow his pursuer 9 15 44.

Lightning Five-Strike Whip

Baoguo’s signature taijutsu consists of five rapid, forceful whipping kicks 6 17.

• Targets an opponent’s vital areas with considerably greater speed than his basic attacks 6.
• According to classmates, he previously used it to defeat Ebisu, who graduated a year ahead of him 6.
• Forces Obito to activate his Three-Tomoe Sharingan during their Academy spar, but cannot overcome its predictive perception 6.
• Obito later uses the technique against a Shimura subordinate and Might Guy; Guy identifies it as a technique copied from Baoguo 17 27.

Other Taijutsu

• Uses punches and roundhouse kicks, including a left hook aimed at the chin 5.
