Power Progression
Sanji Meow’s growth is shown through training, combat feats, Haki development, and equipment upgrades rather than named ranks.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Early combat capability | 6 | Uses agile kicks and occasional claw attacks, but remains much weaker and slower than Xie Wen, who holds back during their sparring. |
| Dedicated combat training | 19 | Begins training seriously after Klee joins, refusing to leave her to fight while he remains on the sidelines. |
| Increased strength and exploration range | 20 | Rigorous training allows him to explore island territories he previously feared entering. He still falls short of the original Sanji’s feats. |
| Capable independent fighter | 41 42 | Xie Wen judges him strong enough to defeat Bax easily. He then overwhelms Vito, knocks him unconscious, and fights Capone Bege’s subordinates alongside Klee. |
| Observation Haki awakened | 87 91 | Has awakened Observation Haki by the Baratie visit and uses it to evade the human Sanji’s attacks without being hit. |
| Electric Diable Jambe / Mink Tribe Mode | 92 | Generates electricity by rubbing his legs together and overwhelms the human Sanji with electrified kicks. He developed this ability after arriving in the One Piece world. |
| Ranged kicks and enhanced speed | 123 | Uses cat-shaped Daytime Tiger air cannons and electrical stimulation to increase his speed. Defeats Ace with repeated shocks, but cannot effectively injure Luffy with ordinary kicks or electricity. |
| Demon Mode and temporary Armament Haki | 124 | Uses Demon Mode, taught by Meow Jūshirō, to temporarily draw out Armament Haki and defeat Ace and Luffy. The exertion also leaves him unable to move. |
| Resistance to Conqueror’s Haki | 131 | Repeated exposure to Ace’s Conqueror’s Haki leaves him largely unaffected by its pressure during combat. |
| Combined modes and aerial combat | 194 199 | Combines Demon Mode, Mink Tribe Mode, Haki, and Dance Jump/Geppo. Lands a surprise kick on Kizaru and later decisively defeats Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji. |
| Established Armament Haki mastery | 217 | Has long since mastered Armament Haki and can exchange reinforced blows with Ace, though their renewed fight shows that Ace has caught up considerably. |
| First demonstrated Raid Suit enhancement | 218 | Uses a chef-outfit Raid Suit made by Ai Haibara Meow. Its thrusters initially let him overwhelm Ace, but Ace awakens Observation Haki and restores an even match. |
| Observation Haki and mobility refinement | 263 | Reads and redirects Satori’s Milky Cloud attack, uses Flash Step/Silent Step, and defeats him with electrified kicks. |
| Armament Haki breakthrough | 542 544 559 | Trains under Jora’s Art-Art Fruit effect, builds up his Armament Haki, breaks free, and defeats her with Ifrit Jambe: Daytime Tiger. The breakthrough substantially improves his ability to contend with dedicated combat cats, though he remains below fighters such as Meow Jūshirō. |
| Upgraded Raid Suit and burst techniques | 674 | Uses a yellow-and-black Calamity Armor Seals Raid Suit improved through Meowrah’s iterations. Burst techniques briefly let him suppress Ace despite Ace’s newly mastered, unstable Conqueror’s Coating, but he cannot sustain the advantage. |
| Borrowed Conqueror’s Coating | 675 | Temporarily wraps Sasha Meow’s Conqueror’s Haki around his feet and resumes fighting Ace. The coating is unstable and is explicitly not evidence that he has awakened his own Conqueror’s Haki. |
| Continued superiority over the human Sanji | 779 | Defeats Sanji again during the Palicoes’ sparring encounters with the Straw Hat Pirates. |
Background / History
Sanji Meow lived among Palicoes and Melynx before Granny Cat took him to a village to train as a cook. He identifies his home as Cocoyasi Village; despite his resemblance to the original Sanji, his remembered background is that of an ordinary chef cat 14 17.
At eight years old, he suddenly lost consciousness while catching fish in the water. He awoke on an unfamiliar island with Xie Wen lying beside him. Xie Wen suspects that he may have been summoned there, but this remains unconfirmed 14.
When Ai Haibara Meow later speculates about a possible connection between him and Judge’s genetic research, Sanji Meow explicitly states that he has never met Judge before. His similarities to the human Sanji are not established as evidence of Vinsmoke ancestry or Germa modification 203.
Appearance
Sanji Meow is a small, fluffy Palico whose coloring and curled ear tufts remind Xie Wen of Sanji from One Piece 2.
- Pale-yellow fur resembling Sanji’s hair 2.
- Pure-black feet and paw pads, giving the impression of black boots and recalling the “Black Leg” epithet 2 4.
- Black, curled ear-tip tufts, shaped like Sanji’s eyebrows rather than the straight tufts of a caracal 2.
- A chef’s outfit, which he usually wears over his thick coat of fur 16.
- A paw-shaped Meowster Bag carried at his waist 4.
- Chef-style Raid Suit: His first demonstrated suit preserves the appearance of his white chef’s outfit while adding a knife-and-fork-patterned belt and thruster-equipped greaves 218.
- Later Raid Suit: By his later rematch with Ace, his transformed equipment is a yellow-and-black Calamity Armor Seals Raid Suit 674.
Personality
Sanji Meow takes cooking and ingredient quality extremely seriously. He kicks Xie Wen away from improperly handled meat, refuses to let him eat an unfinished dish, and criticizes careless butchering. Even when allowing experiments with the Carving Knife, he initially offers only a small, badly damaged bird rather than sacrifice better ingredients 4 8 9 10.
His desire to meet beautiful older Palico ladies drives much of his early enthusiasm for exploration, training, and summoning tickets. Learning that they have reached another world devastates him until Xie Wen mentions feline Minks. He also wants the Clear-Clear Fruit to approach and groom older Palico ladies unseen, though Xie Wen points out that invisibility would not hide his sound or scent 5 6 9 15 16.
He is prickly with Xie Wen but openly frightened when he thinks his companion is injured. Once reassured, he disguises his concern with complaints about losing the person who promised to help him find Palico ladies. He enjoys head scratches and purrs under skilled petting, while protesting enthusiastic nuzzling 4 8 12.
Klee brings out his protective side. He treats her as a little sister, questions whether she should be made to fight, and begins serious training rather than depend on her protection. His later insistence on fighting Vito reflects both his pride and his discomfort with always hiding behind his companions 17 19 41.
His pride is strongest where his cooking is concerned. At Baratie, the human Sanji’s refusal to accept his culinary superiority provokes an unusually persistent rivalry. Xie Wen nevertheless considers him fundamentally kindhearted and believes he would have relented sooner if Sanji had not repeatedly challenged him 88 90 92.
Attention from older female Palicoes can override his exhaustion and caution. Hua Mei Meow’s praise makes him try to stand immediately after exhausting himself against Ace and Luffy, while Sasha Meow’s concern later drives him to refuse surrender against Ace’s Conqueror’s Coating. Conversely, he sometimes avoids difficult rematches by insisting that he is a cook rather than a fighter; Ace gets around this by mocking his bounty in front of the older Palico girls 124 674.
Despite his frequent teasing and protests, he is deeply attached to Xie Wen. After their escape from Kaido, he responds to Xie Wen’s reassurance by licking his ear and rubbing against his cheek. On Zou, even the prospect of remaining among affectionate feline Mink women does not make him willing to be left behind by his companion 398 447.
Abilities & Skills
Cooking and Cat Cuisine
Sanji Meow prepares meals that support Xie Wen’s recovery and physical training, making him the expedition’s principal source of food and logistical support 4 5.
- Restorative meals: His island-ingredient barbecue restores Xie Wen’s stamina and increases his strength 4.
- High-quality monster dishes: A roasted Forest Sheep King hind leg produces a slight strength increase. Sanji deliberately saves the meat until before another hunt to maximize its usefulness 9.
- Invigorating catnip soup: His cooking makes catnip stimulate humans even though it normally does not. He requires at least ten days between servings because prolonged stimulation would wear the recipient out 6.
- Ingredient assessment: He can distinguish edible ingredients from those likely to cause illness and evaluate how blood loss, damage, and delayed processing affect meat quality 5 13.
- Butchery and desserts: He expertly processes large carcasses and prepares fruit cake for Klee 8 14 17.
- Limits: He cannot suggest how to improve a Devil Fruit’s flavor without first knowing its taste 17.
- Culinary competition: Defeats the human Sanji at Baratie, including a 6–0 victory in the competition’s second round. Sanji consequently addresses him as “teacher” under the terms of their bet 90.
- Continued study: Seeks local specialty ingredients and opportunities to learn new dishes. At Baratie, he receives cooking instruction from Zeff; later, his interest in the cuisine of Saint Mary Geoise motivates him to accompany Xie Wen there 85 93 189 561.
- Professional recognition: Kizaru praises his cooking and supplies replacement ingredients so that Sanji Meow will prepare a meal for the visiting Marines 195.
- Food preservation: Prepares cured dried fish that Xie Wen gives him after his exhausting battle with Ace and Luffy 124.
- Mushroom identification: Recognizes the mushrooms growing on Xie Wen as inedible 559.
Kick-Based Combat
Sanji Meow fights primarily with kicks, using his small size, flexibility, and aerial control to exploit openings. Against larger opponents, he can climb their bodies and attack from their shoulders 6 41.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Neck Meat | A backward-flipping kick aimed at Xie Wen’s chin during sparring 6. |
| Cheek Meat SHOOT | A face kick delivered from Vito’s shoulder that sends him flying 41. |
| Three-Level Minced Meat | A sequence of kicks targeting multiple body regions, used while darting around Vito 41. |
| Sea-Land-Air Triple Skewer SHOOT | A finishing combination: rising chin kick, descending stomach strike, and somersaulting forehead kick. It knocks Vito unconscious 42. |
| Level 1 Cooked Meat | A barrage of kicks used against Capone Bege’s gangsters 42. |
| Diable Jambe: Premier Hachis | An electric kicking attack used against the human Sanji 92. |
| Diable Jambe: Power Prelude | A forceful electrified kick used against Sanji and Ace 92 123 674. |
| Diable Jambe: Morning Peacock | A rapid aerial barrage of electrified kicks; Xie Wen likens it to an electric hundred-kick attack rather than the punch-based technique from his stories 92 193. |
| Diable Jambe: Flesh Thrust Combo | Repeated electrified kicks to the stomach, used to batter and immobilize Ace 123. |
| Daytime Tiger | A ranged air cannon released from his feet. Initially paw-shaped, it develops into a cat-shaped projectile through practice 123. |
| Front Lotus | An attack used after activating Demon Mode against Ace and Luffy 124. |
| Diable Jambe: Reverse Lotus | A rapid kicking combination used with Demon Mode and Armament Haki against Ace and Luffy, and later to overwhelm the Germa brothers 124 199. |
| Diable Jambe: Daytime Tiger | An electrified variation used with Demon Mode during his encounter with Kizaru 194. |
| Diable Jambe: Raikiri | An electrified kick that defeats Niji in a direct clash 199. |
| Diable Jambe: Coarse Crush | A descending kick to Yonji’s head following a midair deflection of his fist 199. |
| Diable Jambe: True Reverse Lotus | A Raid Suit-assisted combination whose jet propulsion makes his attacks more agile and difficult to anticipate 218. |
| Diable Jambe · Eight Gates · Evening Elephant · First Step | An electrified descending attack used against Satori 263. |
| Ifrit Jambe: Daytime Tiger | The finishing attack that knocks Jora unconscious after he breaks free of her Art-Art Fruit effect 544. |
| Ifrit Jambe: Evening Elephant: Four-Legged | A burst attack used during his later rematch with Ace 674. |
| Ifrit Jambe: Night... Sanji Meow | A kick delivered after applying borrowed Conqueror’s Coating to his feet 675. |
- His agility helps Xie Wen practice reactions and precise techniques even when their strength differs greatly 6.
- He can use his claws to scratch during sparring or anchor himself to an opponent’s clothing 6 42.
- Early on, his attack power is insufficient to seriously threaten Xie Wen; he has not inherited the original Sanji’s strength 6.
- During the Vito fight, he has no Devil Fruit ability to protect him from serious injury 41.
- Without Armament Haki, his kicks and electrical attacks cannot meaningfully hurt Luffy’s rubber body, although his claws can still scratch him 123.
- He learns to exploit opponents’ tendency to underestimate his cute appearance after hearing Xie Wen’s story about a “severing-type Palico in boots,” though he deliberately avoids such tricks in his match with the human Sanji 91.
Electric Diable Jambe and Combat Modes
Sanji Meow’s Diable Jambe is electrical rather than the human Sanji’s fire-based version. He generates visible electricity by rapidly rubbing his black hind legs together. He tells Xie Wen that he could not do this in the Monster Hunter world and discovered it only after arriving in the One Piece world. Its resemblance to Mink combat leads Xie Wen to call it “Mink Tribe Mode,” but it does not establish that Sanji Meow is a Mink 92.
- Electrical paralysis: Repeated shocks leave the human Sanji unable to rise and eventually bring Ace down through accumulated numbness 92 123.
- Speed enhancement: Electrical stimulation increases his already considerable movement speed 123.
- Demon Mode: Meow Jūshirō teaches him this power-amplifying state. Sanji Meow calls its activation “Eight Gates,” drawing on Xie Wen’s stories, but it is identified as Demon Mode rather than the actual technique from those stories 124.
- Combined modes: He can activate Demon Mode and Mink Tribe Mode together, producing enough speed to overwhelm the Germa brothers despite their jet-assisted maneuvering 199.
- Stamina limitations: His early use of Demon Mode drains him so thoroughly that he collapses after defeating Ace and Luffy. Meow Jūshirō consequently emphasizes stamina management in his future training 124.
- Burst techniques: By the later Ace rematch, techniques such as Flurry Rush briefly let him overcome the advantage granted by Ace’s Conqueror’s Coating. Their short duration prevents him from maintaining that superiority 674.
Haki
| Type / Application | Development and limitations |
|---|---|
| Observation Haki | Absent during the earlier discussion of Klee’s awakening, but awakened by his Baratie visit. He uses it to evade Sanji, counter the Germa siblings while covering his dazzled eyes, and read Satori’s attacks 58 87 91 199 263. |
| Armament Haki | Initially drawn out temporarily through Demon Mode, allowing him to hurt Luffy. By the later Ace rematch, he has long since mastered it and can reinforce his kicks in direct exchanges 124 217. |
| Armament breakthrough and ability resistance | Builds up Haki while affected by Jora’s Art-Art Fruit and breaks free. This overcomes a bottleneck and substantially improves his fighting strength 542 544 559. |
| Resistance to Conqueror’s Haki pressure | Training with Ace makes him largely unaffected by the pressure during battle; this is distinct from possessing Conqueror’s Haki himself 131. |
| Borrowed Conqueror’s Coating | Applies Sasha Meow’s Conqueror’s Haki to his feet after only a few attempts. The coating is unstable, and the power is explicitly not his own 675. |
His Armament breakthrough narrows the gap between him and dedicated combat cats, but does not make him equal to Meow Jūshirō. Xie Wen also notes that his natural aptitude for Haki is inferior to Ace’s, making his progress more dependent on sustained training and carefully arranged combat opportunities 542 559.
Mobility and Raid Suit Use
- Dance Jump/Geppo: Can remain airborne and maneuver freely during combat. His natural agility and proficiency with this movement allow him to contend with Germa’s jet boots even before relying on his own Raid Suit 199.
- Flash Step/Silent Step: Uses rapid movement to vanish from Satori’s sight and reposition above him 263.
- Raid Suit propulsion: Thruster-equipped greaves improve the speed, agility, and unpredictability of his kicking combinations 218.
- Escape and sustained travel: His Raid Suit helps him and Xie Wen create enough distance from Kaido to end the pursuit. After subsequently swimming for hours, they use the suit to fly to a small island 398 399.
Wilderness Survival and Scouting
Sanji Meow finds shelter, gathers ingredients, and guides the group through dangerous terrain 2 4 6.
- Locates a concealed cave near water and uses its faint scent to judge that its former owner is probably gone 4.
- Leads Xie Wen past dangerous animals and warns him when hiding is necessary 4.
- Knows a tent-making method and explains the required construction to Xie Wen 13.
- Uses sharp hearing to detect pursuers and confirm whether enemies are following 25 36 37.
- His independent exploration does not reveal the Hunter’s Notes map; Xie Wen must physically visit the area 5 20.
- Regularly serves as the crew’s lookout before Klee temporarily takes over the duty in the East Blue 84.
- His sense of smell leads the Palicoes toward the Hard-Shell Tower and Shirahoshi, whose fish tail they mistake for tempting food 334.
Sailing and Swimming
Sanji Meow possesses basic navigation knowledge before the crew leaves its starting island and quickly learns to handle a proper sailing vessel 13 21 45.
- Steers the raft in the direction chosen by Klee 21.
- Selects a small, single-masted ship suitable for their limited crew 45.
- Masters sailing under Robbie’s instruction and becomes Explorer One’s helmsman 45.
- Is an excellent swimmer and prepares to swim ashore during the Shatterbone Islands expedition 14 49.
- At Reverse Mountain, has enough strength to control the wheel, but his small size creates the risk of being thrown by it. He willingly exchanges duties with Xie Wen and gives directions from the bow instead 74.
- Swims alongside Xie Wen for hours after their escape from Kaido 399.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Meowster Bag — Paw-shaped spatial storage holding kitchenware, seasonings, food, and animal carcasses 4 10.
- Cooking equipment — Pots, bowls, ladles, pans, knives, forks, spatulas, spoons, and assorted seasoning containers 4.
- Frying pan — Brandished when he offers to help fight the Bullfango Kings 11.
- Catnip jar — A carefully rationed supply of dried catnip. Before leaving the island, he harvests the remaining leaves 21.
- Explorer One — The crew’s first ship, selected and helmed by Sanji Meow. After acquiring a larger vessel, the crew decides to sell it because storing or towing it into more dangerous seas is impractical 45 109.
- Chef-style Germa Raid Suit — Made by Ai Haibara Meow, with the appearance of his white chef’s outfit, a knife-and-fork-patterned belt, and thruster-equipped greaves. Activated through a button on its canister; his original Monster Hunter chef outfit is stored in his Meowster Bag while he wears it 218.
- Cat Claws Canister and upgraded Raid Suit — By the later Ace rematch, activates a yellow-and-black Calamity Armor Seals Raid Suit. Meowrah’s repeated improvements give the crew’s suits a strength boost exceeding Germa’s original versions 674.
- Seastone chains — Uses them to restrain Baby 5 and Buffalo after their defeat 359.
- Angel Potion — Given to him by Xie Wen after the interrupted Ace rematch to treat his injuries 675.
Relationships
- Xie Wen — Expedition leader, traveling companion, and early sparring partner. Their frequent teasing coexists with Sanji’s genuine concern for his safety and Xie Wen’s respect for his cooking and growing strength 6 8 12 41 42. Xie Wen later openly calls him his dearest friend and brother; Sanji protests the sentiment while purring contentedly. Their escape from Kaido and reunion meal recall their original partnership on the deserted island 79 398 399.
- Klee Meow — Companion whom he treats as a little sister. He makes her desserts, shares precious catnip, and trains so she will not have to fight without his help 17 19 21. She enthusiastically supports his cooking and battles, and attacks Kizaru when she believes he is threatening Sanji Meow 90 92 195.
- Granny Cat — Took him to the village to train as a cook. Sanji does not know her personal name 14 17.
- Bax — An acquaintance from Cody’s crew. By the Vito confrontation, Xie Wen considers Sanji stronger than him; Bax becomes dejected after seeing Sanji’s victory 41 42.
- Vito the Weird Gun — Opponent who treats him as valuable merchandise. Sanji defeats him in single combat 41 42.
- Capone Bege — An enemy who attempts to buy the Palicoes and later orders his men to kill them. Sanji fights the Capone Family alongside Xie Wen and Klee 38 42.
- Robbie — Capone Family underling who teaches the crew to sail their newly selected ship 45.
- Sanji — Human counterpart and culinary rival, whom Sanji Meow defeats in both cooking and combat at Baratie. Their wager forces Sanji to call him “teacher” and temporarily give up his name; Sanji Meow dubs him “Squid Tentacles.” He later defends Sanji’s strength when discussing Germa’s contempt for him, but their antagonistic rivalry persists, and he defeats Sanji again after objecting to his attention toward Robin and the others 90 91 92 93 203 779.
- Zeff — Respected chef and kicking instructor. Zeff takes a grandfatherly liking to him and teaches him both cooking and combat techniques, treating him far more gently than the human Sanji 85 86 92 93.
- Meow Jūshirō — Combat teacher who teaches him Demon Mode and plans additional stamina-management training after his exhausting victory over Ace and Luffy. Also fights alongside him against Kizaru 124 194.
- Hua Mei Meow — Older female companion whom he eagerly follows and seeks to impress. Her encouragement and discipline can bring him into line without violence; he accepts punishments such as deck-cleaning and immediately corrects his behavior when she reprimands him 98 137 189 433.
- Ace — Recurring sparring rival. Sanji Meow first defeats him alongside Luffy, later draws with him after Ace awakens Observation Haki, and becomes increasingly concerned with surpassing his growth. Ace eventually goads him into another rematch by mocking his bounty in front of older female Palicoes; that fight is halted after Sanji Meow briefly uses Sasha Meow’s Conqueror’s Haki 124 218 542 674 675.
- Luffy — Early opponent whose rubber body initially counters Sanji Meow’s kicks and electricity. Sanji Meow defeats him after drawing out Armament Haki, but is subsequently pestered by Luffy’s persistent requests for food 123 124 131.
- Ai Haibara Meow — Companion who makes his first demonstrated chef-style Raid Suit. Her speculation about his similarities to the Vinsmokes annoys him 203 218.
- Kizaru — Marine admiral who develops a particular fondness for him despite receiving a surprise kick to the face. Sanji Meow strongly dislikes his unsolicited cuddling, but becomes more accommodating after Kizaru apologizes, praises his cooking, and replaces ingredients eaten by the visiting Marines 194 195.
- Reiju — Develops an affectionate attachment to him because of his resemblance to her younger brother. Sanji Meow tolerates her petting, contributes to conversations about Sanji, and later deliberately exploits her favoritism to tease his human counterpart 203 784.
- Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji — Germa opponents whom he decisively defeats despite their enhanced bodies and coordinated attacks. He notices their unusual physical toughness before Xie Wen explains their cyborg constitution 199.
- Nico Robin — Companion whose skilled petting comforts him when he is dejected. He later helps supervise her combat training and explains an opponent’s air-blade ability before she engages him 252 357 358.
- Shalmeow — Affectionate older female companion whose cuddling, grooming, and maid outfits provoke extreme nosebleeds in him 348 372.
- Sasha Meow — Older female companion who accepts his enthusiastic attention and worries about his safety during the Ace rematch. Her Conqueror’s Haki supplies the power he briefly uses for Conqueror’s Coating 674 675.
- Feline Mink women — Enthusiastically receives their Karuchu greetings on Zou, eventually extending his attention beyond Cat Minks to other feline Minks. Nevertheless, he refuses to remain behind when Xie Wen jokingly suggests leaving him there 435 447.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Survival on the Starting Island
Sanji provides the shelter, scouting, and meals that allow Xie Wen to train and begin hunting large monsters. The discovery of summoning tickets gives him hope of meeting other Palicoes, making him an enthusiastic supporter of further exploration 4 5 8 9.
He later brings Xie Wen the strange fruit that leads to their discussion of Devil Fruits and the One Piece world. After Klee is summoned, Sanji becomes the three-member group’s chef and increasingly active defender. Once the island is mapped, he helps prepare their departure and steers their raft out to sea 14 15 17 19 21.
West Blue and the Capone Family
Aboard Cody’s ship, Sanji gathers information about the West Blue and warns Xie Wen against exposing his ignorance. In Paper Lantern Town and on Gless Island, his senses help track pursuers while gangs target the Palicoes as valuable captives 24 25 36.
At the confrontation with Capone Bege, he insists on taking his own turn in battle. His victory over Vito establishes that he is no longer merely a protected support member; he then helps Klee defeat the surrounding gangsters while Xie Wen confronts Bege 41 42.
*Explorer One* and Further Exploration
Sanji chooses a vessel appropriate for their small crew and becomes its helmsman. After leaving Gures, he assists Xie Wen in planning their route through the West Blue. The group heads for the Shatterbone Islands, where Sanji prepares to join the swimming landing party while Ottilia remains aboard 45 47 49.
When Klee reveals her Observation Haki, Sanji Meow and Xie Wen tease one another about their own lack of the ability. The group later leaves the West Blue and ascends Reverse Mountain. Sanji exchanges the helm for bow-side guidance when the turbulent current makes steering hazardous for someone his size 58 74.
East Blue and Baratie
At Baratie, Sanji Meow initially approaches Zeff to judge the restaurant’s cooking and learn worthwhile dishes. The discovery that he shares Sanji’s name produces laughter among the cooks and sparks a rivalry with the human chef. Sanji Meow wins their cooking contest, then uses Observation Haki and his electric Diable Jambe to defeat Sanji in combat, enforcing their wager over the name and calling him “Squid Tentacles” 85 88 90 91 92.
The crew remains at Baratie while Zeff gives Sanji Meow cooking and kicking instruction. His anger toward Sanji gradually fades, although the other cooks continue exploiting the naming dispute to tease their colleague. After leaving, Xie Wen catches Sanji Meow smoking and confiscates his cigarette 93 95.
In the Conomi Islands period, Sanji Meow unsuccessfully tries to activate a Summon Ticket himself. Hua Mei Meow’s arrival introduces an older female Palico whose encouragement and discipline exert an unusually strong influence over him 98.
Ace, Luffy, and Demon Mode
Sanji Meow challenges Ace and Luffy when they move against Xie Wen. His electricity and speed overwhelm Ace, while Luffy’s rubber body makes ordinary kicking ineffective. He initially uses Luffy as a training target for Armament Haki, then activates the Demon Mode taught by Meow Jūshirō and temporarily draws out the power needed to hurt him. He defeats both boys but collapses from exhaustion himself 123 124.
During the subsequent stay, he explains Haki to the brothers, repeatedly deals with Luffy’s appetite, and grows accustomed to Ace’s Conqueror’s Haki. These encounters establish the basis of his long-running sparring rivalry with Ace 127 130 131.
After the crew acquires a larger ship, Sanji Meow participates in the naming lottery but draws a blank slip. Klee wins the right to name the vessel Explosion Black Cat Maria, and the group decides to sell Explorer One rather than tow it into more dangerous waters 109.
North Blue and Germa
In the North Blue, Sanji Meow continues seeking specialty ingredients. During an encounter with Kizaru, he and Meow Jūshirō attack the unfamiliar visitor; Sanji Meow’s Haki-reinforced kick catches the admiral by surprise, breaks his sunglasses, and leaves a paw print on his face. Kizaru nevertheless becomes persistently affectionate toward him, requiring Hua Mei Meow to insist that the admiral respect his objections 189 194 195.
When Germa’s princes confront the crew, Sanji Meow defeats Yonji and Niji, counters the siblings’ coordinated ambush with Observation Haki, and overwhelms Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji with his combined combat modes. Reiju remains outside the range of his final assault. He subsequently befriends her and helps tell her about Sanji’s life at Baratie 199 203.
Renewed Rivalry and Sky Island Battles
On meeting Ace again, Sanji Meow discovers that his former opponent has improved enough to withstand his Haki and combined combat modes. He activates his chef-style Raid Suit and initially gains the advantage through its propulsion, but Ace awakens Observation Haki mid-battle. Their prolonged match ends without a winner when they stop for dinner 217 218.
In the sky islands, Sanji Meow defeats Satori by using Observation Haki to turn his Milky Cloud attack back on him, then breaks his arms and knocks him unconscious. When he returns seeking recognition, Xie Wen praises him first, only to receive bites and kicks when Sanji Meow objects to the way he is being treated 263.
Later Voyages and Escape from Kaido
On Fish-Man Island, Sanji Meow’s sense of smell leads the Palicoes to Shirahoshi’s tower, where their interest in her fish tail terrifies the princess. Later, he helps oversee Robin’s combat training, knocks Buffalo out of the air during an attack on the ship, and binds Buffalo and Baby 5 with Seastone chains after their defeat 334 357 358 359.
After becoming separated from the crew during the conflict with Kaido, Sanji Meow escapes alongside Xie Wen with the help of his Raid Suit. Xie Wen reassures him when he feels responsible for delaying their escape. They swim for hours, reach a small island, contact their companions, and cook a reunion feast together, recalling their early survival on the deserted island 398 399.
On Zou, Sanji Meow finally enjoys the company of the feline Mink women he had long hoped to meet. Xie Wen teases him by placing him among burly male admirers, and later jokingly suggests leaving him on the island. Despite his delight in Karuchu, Sanji Meow immediately rejects being separated from his companion 433 435 447.
Dressrosa and Armament Haki Development
Concerned that he still cannot defeat Ace, Sanji Meow continues training despite his primary role as cook and the Research Commission’s abundance of stronger frontline fighters. Xie Wen arranges for him to face Jora, whose Art-Art Fruit provides a controlled opportunity to attempt a Haki breakthrough under pressure 542.
Sanji Meow endures the transformation, builds up his Armament Haki, breaks the ability’s hold, and defeats Jora with Ifrit Jambe: Daytime Tiger. The resulting improvement does not put him on Meow Jūshirō’s level, but restores his confidence in facing Ace and gives Xie Wen enough confidence in his self-defense to bring him to Saint Mary Geoise 544 559 561.
Ace Rematch and Borrowed Conqueror’s Haki
Ace later provokes another match by ridiculing Sanji Meow’s bounty in front of older female Palicoes. Sanji Meow uses his improved Raid Suit from the outset, but Ace reveals Conqueror’s Coating and gains the upper hand. Sasha Meow urges him to surrender; instead, he uses burst techniques to briefly regain the initiative before being knocked down again 674.
The unfamiliar Conqueror’s Haki that erupts afterward belongs to Sasha Meow, not Sanji Meow. He manages to coat his feet with that borrowed power and resumes the fight, but Xie Wen halts the match to investigate Sasha’s ability. Sanji Meow immediately answers the call to help her and drinks an Angel Potion to treat his injuries, leaving the spar unresolved 675.
Straw Hat Reunion and Reiju’s Return
During later sparring with the Straw Hat Pirates, Sanji Meow again defeats the human Sanji after objecting to his behavior toward Robin and the others. Sanji responds by demanding a new cooking contest 779.
When Reiju reunites with the group, she affectionately picks up Sanji Meow while greeting her human brother. Sanji Meow deliberately interrupts their exchange and exploits Reiju’s fondness for him to provoke Sanji, preserving their longstanding rivalry 784.

Trivia
- His arrival at eight years old parallels the age at which the original Sanji escaped the Vinsmoke family; Sanji Meow’s own background does not include that history 14 17.
- Xie Wen interprets his habit of opening his catnip jar for a few deep sniffs as a feline counterpart to the original Sanji’s smoking habit. Although he is not shown smoking at that point, Xie Wen later catches him with a cigarette after leaving Baratie and immediately confiscates it 21 95.
- Although outsiders call him a Mink or speculate that he ate a Cat-Cat Fruit, he is a Palico rather than either of those 32 42.
- He and the human Sanji share cooking interests, womanizing tendencies, and identically named kicks. Sanji Meow insists that his techniques are his own rather than copied during their match 91 92.
- Several attacks borrow names from the stories Xie Wen tells the Palicoes. His “Eight Gates” is actually Demon Mode, and his Morning Peacock substitutes electric kicks for punches 92 124.
- The apparent suggestion that he might be the Research Commission’s third cat with Conqueror’s Haki is overturned when the power is revealed to belong to Sasha Meow. Sanji Meow demonstrates borrowed Conqueror’s Coating, not an awakening of his own 674 675.
- Unlike his reactions to Shalmeow, his delighted reception of feline Mink women’s Karuchu does not produce the nosebleeds Xie Wen expects 348 435.
- He cannot activate a Palico Summon Ticket merely by holding it up and attempting the summoning himself 98.
